Going on a holiday without your family for the first time can be a free experience. Just remember that they won’t be at your side if it all goes wrong. Here’s how to be prepared:
Know the plan. So you’re holidaying with friends, and nobody around gives you any comfort. So you need to watch out for yourselves as a group, which means being responsible (负 责的)about having a good time, and looking out for each other. To get the most excitement and pleasure, be clear about your hopes for this holiday. Don’t wait until you arrive to discover you’re the only one with plans for lots of cold nights staying at the hotel.
Be responsible for yourself. It’s natural for you to want to relax on holiday, especially when your parents are not around you, but that doesn’t mean you should live like a pig. Try to keep a tidy eye on things, if not for you, for your holiday friends.
Help is just a call away. Right now, you might not think you’ll miss home. It may be a different story when you’re hundreds of miles away, so be sure to keep in touch. In this way, not only do you know that your family care about you, but also it can let their mind free from worry. If possible, make a call to them at an agreed time and it doesn’t cost much money. Just don’t be afraid to call your family at any time if you’re feeling bad.
Eat your greens. It’s worth keeping change to your diet. Just keep one eye on your health. Eating greens is a sure way to keep your health.

He was 11 years old and often went fishing. On the day before bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening.
When his fishing pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish. Finally, he lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass, a kind of valuable fish.
Lighting a match, the father looked at his watch. It was 10 pm—two hours before people were allowed to catch basses. He looked at the fish, then at the boy, saying, “You’ll have to put it back, son.”
Looking around, he saw no other fishermen or boats. Even so, the boy could tell from his father’s voice that the decision couldn’t be changed. He threw the huge bass into the water. The boy thought that he would never again see such a big fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful businessman in New York. He often takes his son to fish at the same place.
And he was right. He has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. But he does see that same fish... again and again... every time he has an ethical (道德的) decision to make. As his father had taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and wrong. It is only the practice of ethics that is difficult.
41. How did the father feel at first when the boy caught a big fish?
A. Worried. B. Proud. C. Regretful. D. Painful.
42. Why couldn’t the boy take the huge bass home when he caught it?
A. Because such a big fish would cost them a lot of money.
B. Because other fishermen had found them catching the bass.
C. Because catching basses was against the rule at ten o’clock.
D. Because the father thought the boy would catch a bigger one.
43. How did the little boy feel after throwing the bass into the water?
A. He felt very unhappy.
B. He felt very satisfied with himself.
C. He accepted his father’s decision happily.
D. He thought he could change his father’s decision.
44. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. It is difficult but important to practice ethics. B. You can simply tell right from wrong.
C. The things lost will never come back. D. One shouldn’t catch basses at the wrong time.
45. Which part of a magazine does this passage probably come from?
A. Science. B. Sports. C. Novels. D. Health.
D
Flowers make people happy. Some new studies by Rutgers University scientists support the idea strongly, and the experts go on to guess that flowers have flourished(繁荣) on the earth, with their beauty evolving(进化) in recent several thousand years, partly because humans love them.
In the first test, 122 men and women were given either a flower, a pen, or nothing. Those who got flowers smiled more and talked more.
In the second test, bouquets(花束) were sent by flower sellers to 113 men and women. All 113 got flowers and a notebook, but some got them earlier and received a second bouquet when the others got theirs. By now you can guess the result. The more flowers, the more smiles.
From there, it’s a bit of a jump to the idea that flowers grow better because we love them.
Geneticist(遗传学家) Terry McGuire suggests that nature’s prettier flowers continued to live and develop well because people didn’t destroy them when they cleared for agriculture(农业). Instead, they grew them and have been doing so for over 5,000 years. “Because they make us happy, we take care of them. In that sense they’re like dogs. They are the pets of the plant world.” McGuire says.
Here is one way that might have worked:
Many kinds of flowers that are now planted used to grow only when people arrived there, McGuire explains. “As humans moved into a new place to clear land for agriculture, these flowers would have been weeds.” “These prettier flowers might have been kept because of beauty. The seeds(种子) would have been kept and replanted. Over time, the best of these flowers might have been chosen and the seeds more carefully kept.”
46. From the two tests we can know that ________.
A. people love pens more than flowers B. people prefer flowers to other things
C. people love notebooks more than flowers D. people love flowers as much as other things
47. The underlined word “theirs” probably means ________.
A. flowers B. notebooks
C. flowers and notebooks D. a second bouquet
48. According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?
A. We keep dogs because they make us happy.
B. People grow flowers for thousands of years.
C. The more flowers people get, the happier they are.
D. People left all the flowers alive when clearing land.
49. According to Terry McGuire, one possible way of flower evolution is ________.
a the most beautiful flowers were chosen
b. people replanted the seeds of the flowers
c. flowers were wild plants at the beginning
d. people protected the prettier flowers while clearing land
A. c, d, b, a B. c, b, d, a C. b, d, a, c D. d, a, c, b
50. What is the best title(标题) of this passage?
A. Geneticists and Flowers B. Flowers — Pets of Plant World
