I still remember the day I found my love for writing when I was eight years old.
I stepped out of my bedroom and saw my mom visiting the website DUKE TIP. I read the heading and saw "Writing Contest" in big letters.
Writing wasn't a hobby of mine at that time. I only wrote a short story at the age of six. But when I read through the introduction of the competition, I was excited. Although I'd never really written a story for any competition before, there was a first time for everything, right?
We were asked to write about a superhero. I began to think about ideas. Then, a thought came to me. "Chef Kallie: A Superhero with a Super Heart" was born. I painted the story of Chef Kallie Who made lots of food and gave it to the homeless.
I handed my story in to the judges (裁判). I was nervous to wait for the results after that. "Erica, I got a phone call today," Mom spoke to me one day. Then she stopped, and I naturally thought of the Worst result and my heart began to race. It was from DUKE TIP. You won!" I felt proud as I jumped up and down excitedly after hearing the news. I couldn't believe I'd done it.
I began my second work soon. I was excited to start. But after a few pages, I didn't know what to write next. I would think up an idea, but 1 thought it was not a good one for this story. I had to come up with another one. This happened again and again, and I gave up and I thought writing wasn't my thing after all.
Then, suddenly, a day, a week, or a month later, a new idea would come to me. I would begin my new story with new confidence (信心). But, it would happen again. I found myself lost, not able to think of anything to add.
Once again, I had found an amazing idea for a story. I won another competition at the age of nine. Although I lose confidence when I meet difficulties, I like to think hack to my first success. I know I am able to do it once, so I can try and do it again and again.

Have you ever turned off your alarm clock on the weekend to hope that it would pay off your weekly sleep debt (债)? A study in Current Biology may crush those hopes, which means the catch-up sleep weekend is not helpful. The bad health effects of sleep deprivation(缺乏)on weekdays cannot be repaid by long weekend sleep.
According to a study by the University of Colorado, participants who took part in the study only slept for five hours on weekdays while sleeping as much as they wanted during a weekend. To our surprise, they got nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced metabolic disruption(代谢混乱)that would make them become ill easily.
"If there, are benefits of catch-up sleep, they're gone when you go back to your routine. It’s very Short-lived' " Bald Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep laboratory. "These health effects are long -term. It's kind of like smoking once was- people would smoke and wouldn't see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle, choice."
Kenneth Wright said that the study suggests sleep should come first, especially for the people spending a lot of time in watching television or on smart phones. "Even when people don't have a choice about losing sleep because of child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about sleep in the same way they think about a healthy diet or exercise."
Michael Grandner, the sleep program director at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, said, "Imagine a person who ate nothing but cheeseburgers and French fries, Monday through Friday, but only had vegetables on weekends and tried to call that a healthy diet. "That is just what people are doing when they sleep less on weekdays with the idea that they can make up for it, on the weekend," he argued.
Some other researchers found an interesting difference between men and women, in which women got less recovery sleep on the weekends, and they also were able to control their eating behavior better than men on weekends.
40. The word "crush" in Paragraph 1 probably means .
A. build B. break C. show D. take
41. Which of the following is TRUE according to Kenneth Wright?
A. People who sleep less would become fatter.
B. The catch-up sleep is helpful over the long term.
C. Sleep is as important as a healthy diet and exercise.
D. People who keep to their routines would he healthy.
42. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To give us some advice on weekday sleep.
B. To encourage us to sleep more on weekends.
C. To share researchers' unhappy experiences of sleep.
D. To introduce some researches on weekend catch-up sleep.
D
There is great excitement and argument over Artificial Intelligence (Al,人工智能). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people gunk this revolution (革命) is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting, but in developing a child's confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.
AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many Fields, such as medicine, finance and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, Al will help kids to think more freely and creatively Can Al possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing materials for their lessons. Just imagine how happy they could be if they don't have to copy hundreds of paper, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.
However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate(模仿) the human mental condition totally, especially empathy (同情心)and emotional intelligence. What makes learning memorable is shared experience, human interaction, and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can adapt(调整)their interaction with a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But there is no evidence that robots can imitate this adaptability well.
I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ individuality(个性)and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decision. These are skills that they can get as they gain more life experience and given the space to experiment.
To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data you like with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own gut feeling(直觉).
43. Some people think a good teacher might be able to .
A. use AI as much as possible in the class teaching
B. help kids think more freely and creatively than AI
C. have high intelligence to deal with the heavy teaching work
D. develop a child’s confidence and creativity outside the lessons
45. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Will AI Replace Teachers in the Classroom?
B. What can AI Bring Students in the Classroom?
C. Is AI a Good Way to Help with Children’s Learning?
D. How do Teachers Use AI in Their Classroom Teaching?
