Beijing has made history as the first city in the world to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Let’s look back on some of the important factors that made the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games so impressive.
the Olympic torch (火炬)
In recognition of Beijing’s status (地位) as the world’s first city to host both the Summer and Winter games, the 2022 Olympic torch featured a similar design to the 2008 Olympic torch by the same color combination and artistic forms. What truly took viewers’ breath away was the moment when torch bearers (火炬手) passed the flame to another during the Olympic Torch Relay. The two Olympic torches locked into each other at the top, which represented fire and ice, symbolizing how it would bring light and warmth to the winter sports scene.
the Olympic mascots (吉祥物)
The Winter Olympic mascot “Bing Dwen Dwen”, a cartoon image of a panda wearing a spacesuit, like a winter sports athlete from the future, has enjoyed wide popularity at home and abroad since its first appearance in 2019. “Bing Dwen Dwen” is a great combination of Chinese culture and the Olympic spirit. “Hopefully Bing Dwen Dwen can become a classic and leave lasting memories in Olympic history,” said Cao Xue, head of the Beijing 2022 mascot design team.
Soon after the announcement of “Bing Dwen Dwen”, Beijing organizers also introduced “Shuey Rhon Rhon” as the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Paralympic (残奥会)Winter Games.
the smart high-speed railway
As the countdown to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics continued, the new high-speed railway line connecting the capital with Olympic host city Zhangjiakou began to enter service. By cutting the travel time between the two from three hours to 47 minutes, the bullet train can run up to 350 kilometers per hour without a driver, becoming the world’s first smart high-speed railway. So, what makes them “smart”? Well, equipped with 5G signals, intelligent lighting and sensors to collect real-time data and detect any operational problems, the trains can automatically start, stop and adjust to the different speed limits between stations.
21.Why is “Bing Dwen Dwen” so popular?
A.Because it is a real panda, the national treasure of China.
B.Because it looks like an athlete wearing a spacesuit.
C.Because it has already become a classic in Olympic history.
D.Because it shows both Chinese culture and the Olympic spirit.
22.How long did it take to get to Zhangjiakou from Beijing by train before the new high-speed railway was put into use?
A.About 47 minutes B.About 3 hours and 47 minutes C.About 3 hours D.About 2 hours
23.What can we know about the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games from the passage?
A.It caught the world’s eye once again as the 2008 Olympics did.
B.The torch was the same as that in 2008 Olympics.
C.It had two mascots—“Bing Dwen Dwen” and “Shuey Rhon Rhon”
D.Drivers on the new high-speed trains used 5G signals to operate the bullet train.

The pandemic (疫情) has changed the shape of global happiness
Politicians and officials frequently talk about how COVID-19 affects public health and the economy. But for most people, those are abstract considerations. What they experience each day are moods. To mark World Happiness Day on March 20th, researchers have tried to find out these moods and examine the way the pandemic has changed them in the World Happiness Report.
Globally, between 2021 and 2022 happiness was boosted by 0.22 points on the Cantril ladder among people over the age of 60. Video-conferencing software enabled many old people to stay in touch with their families. In countries under lockdown, they experienced the pleasure of knowing that society made sacrifices to protect them.
Meanwhile the young had a rough year. Many lost their jobs — in America the unemployment rate for people aged 20 to 24 shot up from 6.3% in February to 25.6% two months later. In some rich countries young women had a particularly hard time. They often worked in sectors, such as hospitality (食宿娱乐), which were shut down. When schools closed, many were troubled with more than their fair share of child care.
The most interesting finding in the World Happiness Report is that some links between COVID-19 and happiness operate in both directions. The authors do not suggest that happiness helps countries resist COVID-19. Rather, they argue that what sustains national happiness also makes places better at dealing with the pandemic. Surveys by Gallup show that many of the places that have coped best with COVID-19, such as the Nordic countries and New Zealand, have widespread faith in institutions and strangers. Large majorities of their residents believe that a neighbour will return a wallet if they find it.
24.What did researchers conduct in the World Happiness Report?
A.Analyzing how the pandemic changed people’s moods.
B.Finding out what people experienced during the pandemic.
C.Showing the relationship between public health and economy.
D.Explaining the effects of people’s moods during the pandemic.
25.What do we know about the old people from paragraph 2?
A.They felt less happiness than the younger generation.
B.They preferred visiting their family members in person.
C.They were in need of the society to care for them more.
D.They benefited from the video-conferencing in some way.
26.Which group might suffer the most in rich countries during the pandemic?
A.The senior citizens. B.The young women.
C.The college students. D.The office workers.
27.What might matter the most in face of the pandemic?
A.Support. B.Courage. C.Confidence. D.Trust.

Thousands of birds die each spring and fall when they crash with Chicago’s high-rise buildings, which lie on a major migration path between Canada and Latin America. But the birds don’t die in vain. Since the 1970s, many of them have been collected from the street by the city’s Field Museum. They were classified and recorded in detail there. This unique and detailed set of data has been a scientific windfall, showing that North American migratory birds appear to become smaller in size.
A new study of this data has highlighted an important trend: birds that have bigger brains, relative to their body size, are not shrinking as much as the smaller-brained members of their species. The study is the first to identify a potential link between awareness and animal response to human-made climate change, according to the researchers from Washington University in St. Louis. “As temperatures warm, body sizes are decreasing.” said Justin Baldwin. “But larger-brained species are decreasing less strongly than small-brained species.”
Relative brain size is often considered an indicator of behavioral flexibility in birds, according to the research. “The idea is causing a lot of disagreements when it’s applied to some other animals”, Baldwin said, “but it works for birds.” “Relative brain size connects with increased learning ability, increased memory, longer lifespans and others.” Baldwin said. “In this case, a bigger-brained species of bird might be able to reduce its risk to warming temperatures by searching for habitats with cooler temperatures, for example.” he said.
Birds that had big brains, relative to their bodies, had body-size reductions that were only about one-third of those observed for birds with smaller brains, the study found.
28.Why do some birds die on the way of migration?
A.The spring and fall change quickly. B.The weather becomes extremely cold.
C.They crash into the tall buildings. D.Barriers are set up on the migration path.
29.What happened to many of the dead birds?
A.They were kept and studied later on. B.They were buried in the same streets.
C.They were taken away from the path. D.They were used to show migratory way.
30.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “shrinking” in paragraph 2?
A.Increasing B.Decreasing C.Strengthening D.weakening
31.How will bigger-brained birds protect themselves from the warming temperatures?
A.By finding cooler homes. B.By having longer lifespans.
C.By increasing their memory. D.By changing their behavioral flexibility.
D
We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. But what does that mean for us? What acts of kindness will make us happiest and who will benefit the most? A new review of kindness research provides some answers.
Researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose all had to meet certain criteria, such as including only adults and reporting good statistical data. Some were experiments while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were. The studies measured well-being in many ways, including both mental and physical health.
As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Although the relationship was not, stronger than it was, lead researcher Bryant Hui was still encouraged by the result. “Although the relationship is weaker, the effect still has a significant impact,” he says.
He and his colleagues considered when kindness might have a bigger impact on our well-being. One thing they found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness. It’s possible that informal helping may fill our more basic psychological needs for close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness.
The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to have a higher sense of meaning and purpose in life. Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind involves effort which makes people feel confident about themselves and their abilities. And that provides a sense of meaning.
32.What is the text mainly about?
A.Act of kindness makes us happiest. B.Being kind makes us healthy and happy.
C.Random acts of kindness are better than formal ones. D.Doing act of kindness to others improves our abilities.
33.How did the researchers get the finding?
A.By doing surveys. B.By carrying out experiments.
C.By comparing research data. D.By analyzing results of articles.
34.Why does being kind give people a sense of meaning and purpose in life?
A.Because it makes people healthier. B.Because it boosts close relationships.
C.Because it improves people’s confidence. D.Because it promotes awareness of responsibility.
35.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A diary. B.A guide book. C.A novel. D.A magazine.

Mo was waiting outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day. Physics was first and she hated physics, it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything!
“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today!” said Nima as she arrived. Terry looked back again. “What’s wrong with her?” said Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “But she looks absent-minded and acts strangely these days. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts!” said Mo angrily while going into the exam room.
Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades? She felt really angry at Terry and thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams. Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. “Stop writing and put your pens down” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she didn’t feel good. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time. And I thought we were friends!” Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed...”
Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam, but Terry didn’t take her phone out. Mo was feeling bad again. Why did she tell Mr Reed? But it was too late now. He wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry had her phone in the exam. She was on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. Without thinking, Mo looked up and nodded to Mr Reed.
