The droughts(干旱)in Africa make it very hard to grow food. But a water system developed in the United States can help solve this problem. It is helping improve crop production in drought-affected areas.
The system involves plastic membranes(薄膜)that look like clear covers. When the plastic membranes are put in the ground, they prevent the loss of water and other healthful things from the soil.
The technology has so far been tested in Zimbabwe and Kenya and has been performing well. In a village of Kenya, the sandy soil has made it nearly impossible to produce crops. The problem is made worse by droughts. But the new water retention (保留)technology is giving farmers there new hope.
Shem Kuyah is a researcher at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is one of the scientists leading the testing of the technology in Kenya. He said the membranes were tested on farms that grow cowpeas(豇豆)and corn. “We realized that farms where we had used these membranes were more productive(多产的),” he said.
Florence Mutisya is a farmer there. She has used the technology at her farm. “It is really helpful,” she said.“And I can say that this technology is working very well now, because I get a good harvest this year.” Another farmer named Anne Mutunga agrees. “The technology is very good,” she said, adding, “and we have vegetables which you can’t find anywhere else around here.”
Besides improving crop production, experts say the technology can also help reduce the effects of climate change. However, the new water retention technology has a high cost and requires a lot of labor. It costs as much as $2, 000 to buy the membranes to cover one hectare(公顷)of land.

The gift card covered almost all of the check(账单). After dinner, I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills(钞票)inside my wallet. The first would just cover the rest of the check. The second would allow me to cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I planned to pick the first one.

I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. A new study finds that some people attract mosquitoes(蚊子)much more than others, and it probably has something to do with the way they smell.
The researchers found that people who attract mosquitoes the most produce a lot of certain chemicals on their skin. 42 For the study, researchers designed an experiment. They asked 64 volunteers to wear stockings(长筒袜)around their forearms to take in the smell from their skin. 43
The result shows the mosquitoes in some tubes(管子)were much more than the others. 44 The most attractive stocking was around 100 times more attractive to the mosquitoes than the last-place one.
“The research could help find new ways to repel(驱逐)mosquitoes,” said Jeff Riffell, a neurobiologist at the University of Washington who was not involved with the study. 45
However, he said that would be hard to do. Researchers also did the experiment with mosquitoes whose genes(基因)were changed to damage their sense of smell. 46
A scientist said mosquitoes have ways to find us even if we change some conditions. “They have many backup plans to be able to find us and bite us,” she said.
A.But those ideas have not been supported by experiments.
B.Then the stockings were put at the end of long tubes.
C.But they still flew to the same people who have the special smell.
D.In the end, they discovered a huge difference between the stockings.
E.If you want to go to a place with lots of mosquitoes, you should wear white clothes.
