It was our first evening dog-sitting while our teenage daughter was away on vacation. Louie searched the entire house for his “mommy”. While we were watching TV, this six-month-old dog dragged his large carrier down the stairs. This project took most of the evening. What happened next made us realize that he obviously put thought and reasoning into each move. He pulled each of his personal things down the stairs and put them in the carrier.
After Louie finished packing his “suitcase”, he jumped inside and pulled the zipper (拉链) closed. Then he lay down and went to sleep. The message was clear. He had seen his mommy pack her suitcase and go away. He must do the same to find her. In the morning, believing he had arrived, he jumped up — but his mommy was not there.
He surprised us with new undertakings every day. His favorite activity was going for a car ride to McDonald’s for chicken. But one day, my husband Paul didn’t stop at McDonald’s and left Louie in the car with the window open while he went off. That dog managed to jump out the window, walked two blocks and found Paul in a store. As Paul was paying for his things, he was shocked to look down and find Louie. Indeed, they stopped for some chicken on the way home.
One evening, when I was outside with Louie, I noticed a huge black bear. I screamed at Louie to come back inside the house. Instead, he fearlessly rushed to the bear’s back legs. The bear ran to get away from the little annoying dog. I was surprised at Louie’s bravery.
For Christmas that year, I turned Louie’s daily journal (日志) into a book written in a dog’s voice. Writing Louie’s story changed my life, and set me on the path to a new career as an author and radio talk-show host.
4. What did Louie do the evening his mommy left?
A. He decided to look after the author.
B. He checked his own things all night.
C. He got prepared to leave to find her.
D. He tried to quarrel with the author.
5. Why did Louie jump out of the car window?
A. To ask Paul for chicken.
B. To share a ride with Paul.
C. To get a seat in McDonald’s.
D. To help Paul carry the things.
6. What happened one evening outside the author s home?
A. Louie was hurt by a bear.
B. Louie fought against a bear.
C. Louie made the author angry.
D. Louie made friends with a black dog.
7. What is the change happened to the author because of Louie?
A. She joined a club for homeless dogs.
B. She bought Christmas gifts for dogs.
C. She printed her first book of diaries.
D. She turned a writer and a radio host.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

Scientists have shown that humans seem to have an ability to understand the signs of apes (大猩猩). The result is a little surprising, since most people haven’t spent much time at all with apes.
Apes use about 80 different gestures (手势) to show what they mean. Scientists have learned the meanings of these gestures by studying them for years. Scientists have studied how apes use gestures. But until now, no one had studied whether humans could understand the gestures of apes. Researchers Graham and Catherine at the University of St. Andrews in Britain decided to test this idea.
They created a simple game for people to play online. People watched short videos of apes making a gesture. Then they had to choose the correct meaning of the gesture out of four possible answers. For the videos, the researchers chose 10 of the most common ape gestures. Thousands of people played the game.
The researchers found that people could choose the correct meaning of the gestures over 50% of the time. For some of the gestures, people chose the correct meaning about 80% of the time. One example of this was the gesture of wiping the mouth, which people correctly guessed to mean “give me that food”.
Humans and other apes all developed from an earlier kind of ape that lived long ago. One possibility is that the body language of these gestures has been passed down from this shared ancestor. “If humans understand them, then it seems like a great ape gesture ability that would have been used by our last common ancestors,” Dr. Graham said.
Another possibility is that the gestures are a natural result of humans and apes sharing similar body shapes and needing to communicate similar ideas. The researchers say that they need to study how humans are able to understand the gestures of apes. They’re also curious about how humans understand other animals like dogs.
8. What did Graham and Catherine want to find out?
A. Whether humans understand apes’ gestures. B. What gestures apes use in communication.
C. How apes’ gestures differ from humans. D. Why humans can learn from apes’ gestures.
9. How was the research carried out?
A. By sending out questions online. B. By doing interviews in the street.
C. By making online guessing games. D. By starting a video-making contest.
10. How does Dr. Graham explain human understanding of ape gestures?
A. Humans and apes share similar body shapes and gestures.
B. It may be an ability passed on from our last common ancestors.
C. Humans have a born ability to understand animal gestures.
D. Apes and other animals can communicate similar ideas.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Wide Interest in Understanding Ape Gestures
B. An Online Game to Know Ape Communication
C. An Answer to the Puzzles of Ape Communication
D. Study Into Human Understanding of Ape Gestures
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. D

Crosswalk (人行横道) art is gaining popularity. It’s not only beautifying cities but also making it safer for passers-by. The Asphalt Art Initiative (沥青艺术倡议) by Bloomberg Philanthropies creates bright views at crossroads, changing gray concrete into cheerful, bright and safe space.
With its crosswalk art, crossroad paintings and painted squares, this initiative is also building community, calling upon local artists to work with volunteers in the area. One such example is the Gulfton Project in Houston, Texas. This city received Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support to improve dangerous crossroads.
The Houston public works department selected an art studio to create a bright design, and community volunteers were recently asked to come out and paint the street. The design will be living, as it will be designed again every two years in order to re-inspire passers-by and drivers and stay culturally connected. Such an initiative is imperative as more than 50% of injuries and deaths happen near or at crossroads.
Crossroad paintings are so bright that it’s hard for a driver to miss them. Research for Bloomberg Philanthropies called The Asphalt Art Safety Study shows that they are effective; crashes with cars and passers-by were reduced by half and all crashes went down by 17%.
“Using bright urban artwork can really stand out and become some of cities’ biggest successes,” said Janette Sadik-Khan, principal for transportation at Bloomberg Associates. “And this is a simple, beautiful solution. Such use of paint and other temporary (暂时的) treatments cost little, and they can deliver real results.”
Popularity is growing. From 2002 through 2022, there were 42 Asphalt Art Initiative projects in the US, as well as three pilot projects in Europe. In fact, 19 more European cities were just selected for restored passers-by space, safety improvements, and crosswalk paintings, with restoration work starting in 2023. The idea is to do this across the world. Bloomberg is making this dream a reality by offering a detailed guide in multiple languages.
12. Which is one of the purposes of the Asphalt Art Initiative in Houston?
A. To build a wonderful community. B. To make the crossroads safe for everyone.
C. To develop the popularity of street art. D. To change dull concrete into lively space.
13. What does the underlined word “imperative” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Profitable. B. Convenient. C. Necessary. D. Distant.
14. What does Janette Sadik-Khan say about the initiative?
A It makes a difference at a small cost. B. It adds some attractions for some cities.
C. It stands out among all the city’s projects. D. It offers a scientific solution to transportation.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The changes caused by crosswalk art. B. The popularity of crosswalk paintings.
C. Asphalt Art Initiative projects in the US. D. Asphalt Art Initiative’s effort to crosswalk art.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第五段中的“And this is a simple, beautiful solution. Such use of paint and other temporary (暂时的) treatments cost little, and they can deliver real results.(这是一个简单而漂亮的解决方案。这种涂料和其他临时处理的使用成本很低,而且可以带来真正的效果)”可推知,Janette Sadik-Khan认为这项倡议只需要很少的资金,却能阻止更大的损失。故选A项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据首段中的“Crosswalk (人行横道) art is gaining popularity. It’s not only beautifying cities but also making it safer for passers-by.
