American real estate(房地产)tycoon Donald Trump, whose election as US president surprised many around the world, has been unsurprisingly named Time magazine’s “Peron of the Year” for 2016.
Trump said while responding to the news, “It means a lot, especially me growing up reading Time magazine. And it’s a very important magazine, and I’ve been lucky enough to be on the cover many times this year-and last year. But I consider this a very, very great honor.”
Trump has long been obsessed with having his face on the cover of magazines, something that happened more and more often as he won early polls, then Republican primaries, then the nomination(提名), then the presidency. Trump keeps piles of these magazines in his office and with this mindset, Time’s “Person of the Year” became Trump’s long-cherished wish.
Although the magazine featured Trump several times on its cover, it passed on naming him “Person of the Year” for 2015. Instead, it selected German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom the magazine credited with opening her nation’s border to hundreds of thousands of refugees(难民)and managing Europe’s debt crisis. Trump did not take that news well. “I told you @ TIME Magazine would never pick me as ‘Person of the Year’ in spite of being the big favorite. They picked the person who is ruining Germany,” he said on Twitter soon after the news was announced.
Time managing editor Nancy Gibbs said that the decision in 2016 was easy. This title goes to a newsmaker who has influenced events for better or for worse. “When have we ever seen a single individual who has so defied(违背)expectations…beaten not one but two political parties on the way to winning an election… I don’t think that we have ever seen one person, operating in such an unconventional way, have an impact on the events of the year quite like this,” Gibbs said.
24. What do Trump’s words suggest in Paragraph?
A. Luck is on his side. B. He deserves the award.
C. He feels proud of the award D. Time has a good effect on him.
25. Which is truth according to the article?
A. Trump is afraid to be famous.
B. Trump is angry about Time magazine.
C. Trump is addicted to having his face on the cover of magazines.
D. Trump is addicted to having his face on the cover of magazines.
26. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Merkel ruined Germany. B. Merkel was “Person of the Year” for 2015.
C. Trump thought well of Merkel. D. Trump won “Person of the Year” twice.
27. Why was Trump elected as Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2016?
A. He’s been on its cover many times. B. He is the newly elected president.
C. He is the favorite of the magazine. D. He was highly influential in the year.

Sitting under the national flag and separated from the media by a transparent glass wall, 50-year-old Jing Haipeng and 37-year-old Chen Dong appeared calm as they prepare to be part of, what is scheduled to be, China’s longest-ever manned spaceflight mission.
The two were scheduled to spend a total of 33-days in orbit. This would be 3rd trip into space for veteran Chinese astronaut Jing Haipeng. He has been on the Shenzhou-7 mission in 2008 and the Shenzhou-9 mission in 2012. The mission’s commander was also part of docking missions(太空对接任务)on both his previous space flights, giving him the experience needed to help dock Shenzhou-11 with Tiangong-2. Jing Haipeng said, “With The past 18 years of intensive professional astronaut training, together with the two previous experiences I’ve had flying in space, I’m very confident and determined that this mission is going to be a great success. Personally, I’m much calmer and in a more positive head-space than I was during my previous missions. I’m very proud to be here to greet our country. I know my confidence is shared with the rest of our entire space program.”
With an unblemished flight record of 15-hundred hours as a pilot, 37-year old Chen Dong was chosen in 2010 to be part of the next generation of Chinese astronauts. He too said he was confident of heading into the mission, even though it would be his first time in space. “I have the chance to join my first mission after 6-years of intensive training and learning. For me, the timing is perfect-not too early, but not too late either. When we train, Jing is my teacher. In life, he is my brother. He is so dedicated, and demands only the best from me and the others that he works with. Because of his experience, I am very lucky to be paired with him on this mission into space.” After being put into orbit, Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong were going to conduct a series of experiments, including testing the latest in China’s advanced life support systems, as well as scientific research.
Wu Ping deputy director of Chena’s Manned Space Program, explains the role of the two astronauts in space. “During their mission, the two are essentially back-ups to one-another. They are both capable of piloting the spacecraft, complex management, manual docking as well as handling any emergency situations or malfunctions(故障). While in orbit, they are going to complete a number of maneuvers(演习)with Shenzhou-11, as well as orbital experiments, demonstrations and tests on human health in space.”

Illegally traded endangered species that escape, forming secondary populations, offer hope to their long-tem survival, a study suggests. "This first came to my attention when I read a news story about the seizure of an illegal shipment of 23 yellow crested cockatoos(小葵花凤头鹦鹉)," said Luke Gibson, a college teacher. He learned that the species was critically endangered, which surprised him.
This encouraged Dr. Gibson and his colleague to investigate(调查)how a critically endangered species had become self-sustaining outside of its natural range. They discovered 49 cases of a globally threatened species becoming established as a separate population, which they hadn’t thought of, including the yellow-crested cockatoo in their city.
"This is a species which is primarily threatened by wildlife trade," he told BBC News. "Poachers(偷猎者)go out into the forest in its native range in eastern Indonesia and capture the bird and then ship them off, usually up to our city where there is a strong demand for pet birds. This is what has fueled the decline of this species in its native range. But it's really interesting because that same cause also had another effect: some of the people who were keeping this species here accidentally or intentionally released them.” As a result of enough of the birds set free, it allowed a new self-sustaining population to be established in this city.
The government in of Dr. Gibson’s city has made it illegal to capture the species, even though it is a non-native species. Because the city is affluent and relatively well educated, the cases of people breaking the law are extremely rare, explained Dr Gibson, unlike in its native range in Indonesia, where capturing birds forms a major source of income.
However, there can be downsides(缺点) to the newly established population of endangered species, such as a limited genetic pool, and suffering from novel diseases. It did also present a possible “very interesting” opportunity for conservationists, Dr. Gibson suggested. This would involve "harvesting" some of the newly established secondary population, which may provide a way to help slow global biodiversity loss.
32. What was beyond Gibson’s expectations according to the first paragraph?
A. The high rate of wildlife trade. B. The preciousness of the birds.
C. The fact that the birds nearly disappear. D. The news that the birds were poached.
33. What happened unexpectedly when the birds were shipped abroad?
A. They formed a separate population. B. They were kept as pet birds.
C. They were traded illegally. D. They were killed for research.
34. Which can replace the underlined word “affluent”?
A. Peace-loving B. Rich C. Free D. Environment –friendly
35. For what purpose did the author write the passage?
A. To appeal to everyone to stop the wildlife trade.
B. To explain the challenge the wild birds are facing.
C. To introduce a creative approach to wildlife conservation.
D. To raise people’s awareness of protecting endangered species.

Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World
The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? 36
The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it. 37 In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random.
Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. 38 In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God’s right side. God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgement. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. 39 A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.
40 People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.
A. In other words, left-handers are born that way.
B. Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability.
C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.
D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?
E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?
F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.
G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before

第二节:书面表达(满分25分)One Possible Version
Dear Peter,
It’s great to learn that you’re coming to China to experience the country life. The “agritainment”, a kind of farm-based tourism, is now very popular in my hometown and I think it should be a must for you to experience after your arrival.
As more people from cities are fed up with crowds, noise and traffic jams, they’re trying hard to get closer to nature. However, few people can afford a long holiday in terms of time and money.
As a result, “agritainment”, catches on, which provides people with great relaxation and enjoyment. If you take the “agritainment”, you can enjoy not just local food, country views, but some hands-on activities as well.
I’m sure you will have a pleasant stay in my hometown.
Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Yeah, but I had to miss the last few weeks because I had too much work to do. If I miss it again, the other guys will be really mad. Can’t you move on Sunday instead? I could help you then.
W: It has to be Saturday! The landlord already arranged for someone else to move in the next day. I can’t believe you only care about yourself—you’re supposed to be my friend!
M: Oh, all right—I’ll help you, OK! Are you happy now?
W: Oh, that’s great. Thanks!
M: Yeah, yeah. Well what time should I show up?
W: Come around 5:00 in the morning.
M: What? Why so early?
W: I’m borrowing my friend’s car, and she needs it for work. The only time I can use it is early in the morning. Don’t worry. It will only take an hour or two!
M: Well, I guess I can play basketball later that day after all… Even though I’ll be half dead from lack of sleep.

M: What are you going to be for Halloween this year?
W: Well, last year I was a rabbit, but I think I want to be something more exciting this year. Maybe I’ll be a zombie bride.
M: A zombie bride? Now that’s an interesting idea. I always think that the best costumes are ones that are homemade. If you have an original idea, everyone will enjoy your costume much more than if you just buy a costume at a store and wear it.
W: Yeah. When I was young, my mother always used to make our costumes. She did it because it was cheaper that buying one from a store, but I loved it because I could just tell her what I wanted to be, One year, I was a bunch of grapes; the next year, I was Abraham Lincoln; and the year after that, I was an astronaut. I could be whatever I wanted, even if they didn’t sell the costume in a store.
M: I remember that one year, I wanted to be a purple dragon, but they didn’t have the costume anywhere, so I was a pirate instead. Halloween is one of my favorite traditions. It really reminds me of being a kid and being with my family. I always start to remember the old days when Halloween comes around,
W: Yes, it’s good to be able to remember things about when you were a kid. I can’t wait until I have kids of my own, and then I can make costumes for them!

Hello everyone! This is a message for all my friends in London that I’ll be having my 30th birthday party in two weeks, on Friday, the 27th of October. Since coming here this past year, I’ve made so many friends at work, at my photography class, and through friends of friends—I‘m very excited for you al to come and finally meet one another. I’ll be reserving a table at the Rasa Restaurant at 57 Stoke Newington High Street at 7:00 p.m., so please let me know if you can make it! You can take either the 73 or 253 bus to get to the Stoke Newington area if you’re coming from west London, or the 112 bus if you’re coming from the south. Afterwards, I ‘ve arranged for drinks at Larry’s, a bar in the east end at 27 Church Street, near Brick Lane. If you’re coming by subway, you can get off at Bethnal Green Station and walk west for 10 minutes to get there. I know the owner of the bar, and he’s said we can stay until 4:00 a.m. if we want—we’ll be heading there at around 9:00 p.m. for those of you who can’t make it for dinner. The rest of us can either take a taxi there or bus 341 heading south. I’m looking forward to having a great time with you all! And if anyone gets hungry during the late hours, there is a 24-hour bakery five minutes away on Brick Lane—they have nice pastries and sandwiches, and even coffee. Let me know if you have any questions about the evening—see you soon hopefully!
