A Dream Chaser in a Wheelchair

Since the age of three, Chelsie Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer. That ambition nearly ended in 2010 when Hill was in a car accident, which put the 17-year-old high school senior in hospital for 51 days and left her paralyzed(瘫痪)from the waist down. For most people, that would have destroyed any hope of a dancing career. But for Hill, it was the beginning. Far from being a barrier, her wheelchair encouraged her to fight. "I want to prove, to everyone including myself that I'm still normal," she said, "whatever normal means."

Normal for her meant dancing, so Hill did it in her wheelchair alongside her nondisabled high school dance team. Half of her body was taken away from her, so she had to move it with her hands. It took much learning and patience.

After graduation from high school, Hill wanted to expand her dance network to include women like her. She met people online who were fighting for the dream of dancing against various spinal(脊椎的)injuries, and invited them to dance with her. To reach more people in a larger city, Hill moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities she called the Rollettes.

Every year Hill holds a dance camp called the Rollettes Experience for wheelchair users to help them bring out their acting talent. In 2019, 173 participants from ten countries attended. For many, it was the first time they`d felt they belonged. Edna Serrano said that being part of the Rollettes team gave her the courage to get behind the wheel of a car. "I didn't know I could do so many things that my fellow teammates had taught me." she said. "I didn't know I could be sexy. It's so powerful to have my teammates in my life, because they're my teachers. I have more confidence."

Chelsie Hill attained what many of us never will: her childhood dream. She has been chasing her dream in the wheelchair. She's a dancer. The Rollettes have helped her find something else just as fulfilling.

A campaign(活动)is being launched to encourage children to surrender 30 minutes of screen time a day to head for the great outdoors.

The Wild Network—a collaboration(合作)of nearly 2,000 organisations—is attempting to attract youngsters away from the television and computer screen and to fields, woods and parks. Members of the network include the National Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of BirdsRSPB, Play England and the National Health ServiceNHSsustainable development unit. Organisers say it is the UK's biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and claim it could help improve fitness, mental alertness(机敏)and general well being.

A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, which forecast the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK also looked at the increasingly fragile link between children and nature.

Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said, "The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature and the outdoors in just one generation. Time spent outdoors is down, roaming(漫步)ranges have fallen largely, activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost."

Suggestions of how to get more time in nature include collecting conkers(七叶树果), camping or snail racing, and observing autumn colours on trees.

The network also aims to make suggestions to politicians on how government can do more to get children muddy and bright-eyed.

This is not the first time the message of "less screen, more play" has been brought up Children in the 1980s were requested to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don't You, which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to "switch off your TV set and go to do something less boring instead".

    A. Give up.      B. Get around.      C. Take up.      D. Run away

    44. For what purpose is the Wild Network organised?

    A. To make children read more books.

    B. To help children tell the natural world.

    C. To encourage children to take part in outdoor activities.

    D. To get children out of too much homework from school.

    45. "Less screen, more play" was first put forward by___________.

    A. Wild Network      B. the BBC      C. the National Trust      D. Play England

    46. What can we infer from the passage?

    A. TV viewers will turn away from television.     B. Children have already been close to nature.

    C. Politicians have controlled the campaign.       D. The government will play an important role

    D

    Electric Cars

Where do cars get their energy from? For most cars, the answer is petrol. But some cars use electricity(电). These cars have special motors that get their power from large batteries.

Most people tend to think of electric cars as a new invention(发明), but they have been around for a long time. They were popular when the technology for petrol engines was not very advanced. Recently, electric cars have again become popular because people want cars that pollute less.

Electric cars are better than petrol cars in several ways. The biggest benefit is reduced pollution. In areas where there is a high percentage of electric cars, there is less pollution, But it is important to understand that electric cars still cause pollution. Remember that the electricity to power electric cars has to come from somewhere, which is most likely a power station. Unless these power stations run on solar or wind energy, they are most likely burning coal and oil to make electricity. The second benefit of electric cars is a reduction in the dependence on foreign oil. There are several countries, including the United States, which don't want to rely on oil coming from other countries to power their transportation systems. They want the power to come from within their country, and since electric cars can run on electricity from coal or nuclear power stations, there is less of a need to import oil

Despite(尽管,即使)the benefits of electric cars, there are some problems with them as well. One disadvantage is that electric cars are more expensive than petrol cars. This is mostly due to the high cost of the batteries these cars need. Electric cars run on batteries, just like a mobile phone does. But unlike a mobile phone, you cannot charge your electric car's battery by plugging it into a wall. They need to be charged in special places. Now, there is a lack of places where people can charge the batteries. Another problem is that electric cars cannot travel as far as petrol cars. Some people are afraid that the battery will run out of electricityand the car will stopbefore they reach their destination.

Despite these problems, many people, including automobile industry experts, believe that the percentage of electric cars will increase in the future.

    47. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3?

    A. Electric cars make some countries independent.

    B. Electric cars cause no pollution to the environment.

    C. Electric cars have some advantages over petrol cars.

    D. Electric cars need electricity from solar or wind energy.

    48. Which of the following is not mentioned as the shortcomings of electric cars?

    A. Petrol cars are cheaper than electric cars.          B. Electric cars need special motors to get power.

    C. Petrol cars can travel farther than electric cars.      D. Electric cars need special places to get charged.

    49. We can infer from the passage that

    A. electric cars will take the place of petrol cars     B. no one holds hope for electric cars at present

    C. electric cars waste more energy than before      D. more and more people will use electric cars

    50. The main purpose of the passage is to

    A. argue and prove     B. attract and discuss     C. inform and explain      D. advertise and conclude

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,共10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    Exam Anxiety

Has this ever happened to you? You've been studying hard for your midterm, but when you walk into your exam, your mind goes blank, your heart races fast, you get sweaty palms and find it hard to breathe.   51

Everyone feels stressed during exams. Usually, it results from a fear of failure, lack of adequateenoughpreparation time and bad experiences taking tests in the past. This is normal and often helps you work harder, think faster and generally improve your performance.   52   You may also feel that other people are managing the exam better than you. This can cause you to feel that your mind has "gone blank" on information you know you have revised.

53   Some choose to ignore the problem, while others don't review because they think they will do badly anyway and even miss exams due to the anxiety. It can also be really easy to think that if you don't try and then you fail, you won't feel as bad as if you fail after trying really hard.

So what can you do to fight against the negative mindset and stay calm before and during your test?   54   Yes, this seems obvious, but it's worth repeating. If you feel confident that you've prepared thoroughly, you'll feel more confident walking into the test. The second tip is simple: just start. The blank page can maximize your anxiety.   55   You can always go back and change things later if needed, but a few quick answers can get the ball rolling. Besides, allocating(分配)your time is equally important Look through the whole test before getting started. Mentally allocate how much time you'll spend on each section. If there's time to recheck, even better.

    A. After you get the paper, dive right in by getting some questions done to build up your confidence

    B. However, if you are overly anxious about the result, you may be unable to focus on your work.

    C. Realizing time is almost up and that there's still a lot of blank space will make you desperate.

    D. Therefore, people need an appropriate amount of pressure to help deal with exams.

    E. If these classic signs of exam anxiety sound familiar, you're not alone!

    F. People often deal with exam stress in many unhelpful ways.

    G. The first thing you should do is to be prepared.
