课时作业(一) Unit 7 Art Part Ⅰ Topic TalkⅠ.阅读理解AMarian Wright Edelman, an American lawyer, educator and children's rights activist, was born on June 6, 1939 in South Carolina, one of five children. Her father Arthur Wright was a preacher (牧师) who died when she was only 14 years old. In his last words to her, he advised her not to “let anything get in the way of your education”.After high school, Edelman went on to study at Spelman College and later traveled to the Soviet Union. When she returned to Spelman in 1959, Edelman became involved in the civil rights movement. This work inspired her to drop her plans to enter the Foreign Service and study law instead. In 1973, Edelman set up the Children's Defense Fund as a voice for poor and disabled children. She served as a public speaker on behalf of these children.During a tour, Marian met Peter Edelman, an assistant to Kennedy, and the next year she moved to Washington, D.C.to marry him and to work for social justice in the center of America's political scene. The couple had three sons: Joshua, Jonah and Ezra. Jonah is the founder of Stand for Children, a group that promotes children's education, and Ezra is a documentary (纪录片) filmmaker who won an Emmy for his film “O.J.: MadeinAmerica”.Edelman is the author of many books for children and adults. Her titles for readers include I'mYourchild, God: PrayersforOurChildren, GuideMyFeet: PrayersandMeditationsforOurChildren, Lanterns: AMemoirofMentors, and TheMeasureofOurSuccess: ALettertoMyChildrenandYours, which was a surprising success.1.What do we know about Edelman's family?A.She was the single child.B.Her mother was a preacher. B.In the Soviet Union.C.In South Carolina. D.In Spelman.4.What can be learned about Edelman's children?A.They all worked for social justice.B.They achieved something in career.C.They won many awards in their lives.D.They contributed to their mother's books.BIn most developed countries the government provides free education for children because it realizes that educated citizens are useful to the country in their later life. Most countries also have private (私立的) education. This means that parents can pay to send their children to certain schools. People who agree with this system say that it gives parents a larger choice of schools. Other people think that private schools give the children who go to them an unfair advantage over other children. At the age of three, many children go to nursery school. Two or three years later, they enter a primary school. At the age of 11 they go to a secondary school. Then they may have a chance of continuing their studies at a university or college. Universities and colleges are places where some young people go to continue their education after leaving school. Most university students study one main subject, though they may also study a number of others. Teaching is usually by lectures, or by discussions between a lecturer and students. Most students stay at university for three or four years. At the end of that, they take an examination. If they pass, they receive their Bachelor's degree, usually a BA, which is short for Bachelor of Arts, or a BS for Bachelor of Science. Some students study for several more years in order to get higher degree, such as a MA or a PhD. Most university courses don't train students to do a certain job. Colleges, on the other hand, usually teach skills which enable students to follow a career (职业), such as clothing design, or business studies.5.The passage mainly tells us ________.A.something about the private schools in developed countriesB.how developed countries pay attention to educationC.some general information about education in developed countriesD.why education is important6.Why do most developed countries provide free education to children? A.Because the children don't have money to go to school. B.Because the government want their citizens to be useful to the country. C.Because education doesn't cost the country too much money. D.Because there are not enough private schools.7.In the first paragraph the underlined word “citizens” refer to ________. A.the cities B.members of a country C.the children D.people who lives in cities8.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A.All the university students study one subject.
