King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table
By Roger Lancelyn Creen
I loved reading when I was little. I think that's the reason why I love writing for children. My parents were both English teachers, and our home was full of books. Dickens was a family favourite. But the book that really fired my imagination was King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green, which my father read to me at bedtime when I was around 12.
Diary of a Nobody
By George and Weedon Grossmith
I'm a fool for a classic, and I'm so glad I finally came across Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. It began life as a serial in Punch, with text by George and illustrations by Weedon. Put simply, it’s the funniest book I've ever read, and the model for so many brilliant first-person narratives like Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones. The short pitch is that it follows the social climbing of a London clerk, Charles Pooter but of course it's so much more than that, poking fun at all things from middle class.
By Ted Chiang
It's never too late to have your life changed by a book, and it happened to me again recently when I read Ted Chiang's Exhalation. Ted Chiang wrote Story of Your Life, which inspired the sci-fi alien-visitation classic Arrival. I love that too, but each and every piece in Exhalation is its match in writing skills. If there are super-intelligent aliens in the galaxy seeking to communicate important truths, Ed Chiang may well be one of them.
21.What is special about the book King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table?
A.It describes a story of intelligent aliens.
B. It stimulates the author's imagination of writing.
C It helps the author to improve the writing skills.
D.It opens a window for the author to understand classics.
22.Who has drawn pictures for the book Diary of a Nobody?
A.Roger Lancelyn Green.
B.George.
C.Weedon Grossmith.
D.Ted Chiang.
23 Where is the text most likely from?
A.A diary.
B.Anovel.
C.A guidebook.
D.A magazine.
B
I’ve always described myself as a perfectionist. I wore it like a badge(微章)of honor. I credited my perfectionism with good grades at school, turning in essays that were rewritten until they felt perfect. I’d always thought of myself-as someone who tried his best, but the truth is that I was a quitter, not a trier. I gave up anything that I wasn't immediately good at. I was so afraid of failing and I wasn't even trying anymore. It turned out that perfectionism actually means the fear of failure. And there was so much I wanted to try. There were so many things I felt sure I'd enjoy but never had a go at. What if I failed? What if I was rubbish? The idea was so unbearable that it was easier to leave it as the unknown. If I didn't try, I couldn't fail.
And then one day I accidentally stepped into an art supply store. Before I could stop myself, I bought a tiny set of paints, some paper, and brushes. I headed home full of anticipation, opened them up, and started painting. And the results were...really bad. Frustrated, I pushed everything into a drawer and decided to forget the idea. But then a weird thing happened-I kept thinking about being a quitter, so I got the paints back out and started again. I was still terrible at painting, but my motivation this time never lessened. I decided to share my paintings on social media, showing my progress and the efforts behind the scenes instead of the so-called perfection.
Now, three years later, I paint almost every day and have set up my own art business. I regularly fail and make a mess, but I never quit. And even better, I'm constantly trying new things that just a few years ago I couldn't even have imagined. I enjoyed the moments in the painting workshops and attended drawing classes. I’ve made friends with fellow creatives from around the world. Most importantly, I've failed a bunch of times and just kept going. Because I'm no longer aiming for perfection or even excellence, I’m simply enjoying the process. And I'm so much happier. So pick something you've always wanted to try and get stuck in. You won't regret it.
24.What can we know about the author from paragraph 1?
A.He actually is proud to be a perfectionist.
B.He was brave and preferred to try everything.
C.He was afraid of failure so he didn't try.
D.He didn't perform well when he was a student.
25.Why did the author share his paintings on social media?

C.To make more friends.
B.To demonstrate his perfection.
D.To prove he wasn't a trier.
26.Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A.Intelligent and reliable.
C.Persistent and positive.
B.Hesitant and shallow.
D.Caring and generous.
27.Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A.Always be a perfectionist.

Scientists at Purdue University created the world's whitest paint-a discovery that not only adds yet another choice to the “which white should we paint this wall" dilemma, but also might help the climate crisis.-
The paint was developed by Purdue mechanical engineering professor Xiulin Ruan and his team. It works through a passive cooling technology that offers great promises to reduce space cooling cost and global warming. “When we started this project seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind," Ruan said in a podcast (播客) episode of “This Is Purdue”. They wanted to create a paint that would reflect sunlight away from a building, dramatically decreasing the need for air conditioning.
Heating, cooling, and lighting account for 28 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. And overusing air conditioning can overwhelm a city's power grid and cause blackouts(停电).In a Queens blackout in 2006,175,000 people were left without power, which led to 40 deaths. This paint could effectively be an alternative to air conditioners in some places.
The paint reflects 98.1% of solar radiation while also giving out infrared(红外线的)heat. Because the paint takes in less heat from the sun than it gives out, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without using power. Covering a roof area of 1,000 square feet with the paint could create 10 kilowatts of cooling power, the researchers found. “That's more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses," Ruan told “This Is Purdue”.
You can't buy the paint just yet, but researchers are partnering with a company to put the paint on the market. While individual action to fight climate change can help save our planet, it’s important to note that the vast majority of the world's greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to 100 companies.Maybe we can douse(浇)those companies with this white paint, too-it could be worth a shot.
28.What is known about the paint?
A.It has different colors.
C.It uses heating technology.
B.It doesn't cost much.
D.It is climate-friendly.
29 What is the Queens blackout mentioned to show?
A.The poor management of power.
B.The significance of the paint.
C.The importance of air conditioning.
D.The result of global warming.
30 Which aspect of the paint is talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. Its application.
C.Its composition.
B.Its function.
D.Its disadvantage.
31.What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A The quality of the paint needs improving.
B.The paint will bring profits to the 100 companies.
C.Researchers want to see the paint in commercial use.
D.Individual efforts matter in creating the whitest paint.

Batman may not have any superpowers, but his inspiration certainly does.
More than 1,400 bat species live around the world, except in Antarctica and a few remote islands. Over their 50 million years of evolution, bats have developed clever solutions to life's challenges, from a built-in sonar(声呐)system for finding food to fast, flexible wings that produce the fastest level-flight speed of any animal on Earth.
“There is still a lot to learn, but it is clear that bats really do have superpowers," says Rodrigo Medellin, an ecologist. “Bats are showing us how to live a better life, for instance, by serving as models for healthy living. and long lives.”
As a general rule in biology, smaller animals have shorter lives than larger ones. But bats are rule breakers: they're the longest-lived mammals relative to their body size. Recently, scientists looked inside bats' cells for the secrets to their exceptionally long lives. They focused on telomeres(端粒),which are the protective structures found at the ends of chromosomes(染色体).In most animals, telomeres tend to get shorter with age. But the telomeres of the longest-lived group of bats, Myotis, do not appear to shrink with age. Understanding why bats live so long may help humans live longer one day.
In addition to living longer, bats remain healthy throughout their lives, with very low risk of developing cancer. Furthermore, bats can carry deadly viruses without getting sick. So further research into their unique immune systems may actually give insight into how people can live with viruses and not get sick.
Beyond their own abilities, bats also support many other parts of their ecosystems. Three out of every four bat species eat insects. Many are pests that cause damage to important agricultural crops, such as cotton. Scientists estimate that insect-eating bats may save U.S. farmers about 1 billion per year. In addition, many bat species help improve plant health and diversity.
“Bats are unsung heroes of biodiversity,” says Medellin. “It's about time we appreciated them.”
3? What can be learned about bats from the text?
A.They fly the fastest of all land animals.
B.They are at low risk of falling sick with a virus.
CThey live mainly on the islands of Antarctica.
D.They are the longest-lived animals given their size.
32.What did scientists recently find?
A.Animals' telomeres rarely shrink with age.
B.Myotis's telomeres do not shorten as they age.
C.Smaller animals usually live shorter lives than larger ones.
D.More research into bat telomeres could help people live more healthily.
34. What is the author's intention in writing the sixth paragraph?
A.To show what bats feed on.
B.To call on people to protect bats.
C.To explain how bats benefit the farmers.
D.To highlight the importance of bats to the ecosystem.
35.What would be a suitable title for this text?
A.Bats Offer Clues to Treating Diseases
D.How Bats Deal with Life's Challenges
C.Scientists Unlock the Secrets to Long Lives
D.Why Bats Are Superheroes of the Animal World

Ben raced out of school. Christmas holidays! When he got home, he went to check on his pony,Scout. He slipped him a candy and Scout nuzzled (用口鼻轻擦) his shoulder. Ben started toward the house and found his older brother Jack starting the snowmobile(雪地机动车)to deliver gas to Uncle Mike. Ben jumped on the back and joined him.
They set off slowly. The snow was fresh and deep on the remote mountain path. When they arrived, Jack went over with the gas can. Ben looked up the mountain and saw something moving. He got binoculars(望远镜) and saw two animals. Could it be a horse? Jack climbed back on the snowmobile and asked Ben to leave. When Ben told Jack he saw horses upon the snowy trees, Jack didn't believe it. Ben looked back up the mountain, but he couldn't see anything.
At dinner Ben told his father he saw two horses up on the mountain today. “If they are horses, they must be trapped by all this snow." said his dad." If they're trapped, we have to do something," said Ben, his voice rising.
His dad looked at Jack. “Well, in the morning go and take a look. Take the gun and some hay(干草).If they look as if they can survive, give them the hay. If not..."Jack looked serious, and slowly nodded. Ben knew what the gun was for, and his chest went cold.
In the morning they set off in the cold snow. When they got to the place where Ben had seen the horses, they stopped and looked up using binoculars. No horses. They waited for a few minutes.
“I see them. They’re horses. Let's take the snowmobile up there." Ben suddenly exclaimed. They drove the snowmobile in the deep snow and finally reached the place, “Oh no!" said Ben. “They're starving!” One of the horses had lost a lot of hair, and their tails were almost gone. Their eyes were lifeless and tired.
