It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂 货) ,saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.
34. Why was the bike so important to the couple?
A. They used it for work and daily life. B.It was their only possession.
C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.

B. From a newspaper.
C. From TV news.
D. From radio broadcasts.
37. From this story, we can see humanity is
A.commercial B. evil C.kind D. notorious

For Canaan Elementary's second grade in Patchogue, N.Y., today is speech day, and right now it's Chris Palaez's turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.
But he's nervous. "I'm here to tell you today why you should… should… " Chris trips on the "-ld", a pronunciation difficulty for many non-native English speakers. His teacher, Thomas Whaley, is next to him, whispering support. "… Vote for… me…" Except for some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well. When he brings his speech to a nice conclusion, Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.
A son of immigrants, Chris started learning English a little over three years ago. Whaley recalls (回 想起 ) how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read, Chris would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.
Learning English as a second language can be a painful experience. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes. "It takes a lot for any student, " Whaley explains, "especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, 'I don't know, but I want to know.'"
Whaley got the idea of this second-grade presidential campaign project when he asked the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a president. The answer broke his heart. Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast about themselves.
"Boasting about yourself, and your best qualities, " Whaley says, "is very difficult for a child who came into the classroom not feeling confident."

One day when I was 15 years old, I was making food in the kitchen. My brother came in. He placed his beef next to my thick one and said,"Courtney, your beef is bigger than mine. You don't need to eat; you're already obese(极为肥胖的)."Then he walked out laughing. From then on, I was unwilling to wear shorts until l was 30 years old.For the next 15 years,I spent summer after summer roasting in long pants.
But then I met Ragen Chastain.I couldn’t believe that this woman who, like myself, weighed almost300 pounds, was so energetic and happy in her own skin.I listened as she shared her own journey to recovery and self-love. She talked about how amazing our bodies are, simply because of the things they do every day-like breathing, pumping blood to every cell and walking.
Walking! I was suddenly aware of how foolish I’d been for so long. There are people who are born without legs, or who lack properly working legs,or who lose their legs, and I’d been hiding my perfectly strong, healthy, beautiful legs in shame. The next day,I bought three pairs of shorts and a sundress and spent the entire summer letting my legs see the sun and feel the breeze.
The next time anyone comment on your body in a negative way, look them straight in the eye, smile and say.“If what you see bothers you so much, feel free to practice the ancient art of looking somewhere else."That’s Ragen’s own creation, but I don’t think she will mind if you use it.

作文
Dear David,
How is everything going with you? I'm sorry to learn from your letter that you have a conflict between you and your roommate Tim because he listens to music loudly. From your letter, I can understand that you are annoyed/disturbed when your roommate listens to music aloud, ignoring your feelings. I'm writing to show my concern and share my suggestions which may help.
First of all, try to communicate with Tim about your feelings. If possible, suggest Tim to turn down the music to a level both of you would like to accept instead of having a conflict. What’s more, just find out what hobbies you both have in common, so that you can not only share wonderful moments together but also live under the same roof in harmony/ in a more harmonious atmosphere.
Going well with your roommate plays a significant role in your senior life. It’s sincere communication that can melt away the ice between two hearts. Only by changing/adjusting your attitude can you live in a more delightful mood.
Yours, Lihua
