Throughout all the events in my life, one in particular sticks out more than the others. As I reflect on this significant event, a smile spreads across my face. As I think of Shanda, I feel loved and grateful.
It was my twelfth year of dancing, I thought it would end up like any other year: stuck in
emptiness, forgotten and without the belief of any teacher or friend that I really had the potential to achieve greatness.
However, I met Shanda, a young, talented choreographer (编舞者). She influenced me to work
to the best of my ability, pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up, encouraged me and showed me the real importance of dancing. Throughout our hard work, not only did my ability to dance grow, but my friendship with Shanda grew as well.
With the end of the year came our showtime. As I walked to a backstage filled with other
dancers, I hoped for a good performance that would prove my improvement. I waited anxiously for my turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the loudspeaker announced my name. Butterflies
filled my stomach as I took trembling(颤抖) steps onto the big lighted stage. But, with the
determination to succeed and eagerness to live up to Shanda’s expectations for me, I began to dance. All my troubles and nerves went away as I danced my whole heart out.
As I walked up to the judge to receive my first place shining, gold trophy (奖杯), I realized that
dance is not about becoming the best. It was about loving dance for dance itself, a getaway from all my problems in the world. Shanda showed me that you could let everything go and just dance what you feel at that moment. After all the doubts that people had in me, I believed in myself and did not care what others thought. Thanks to Shanda, dance became more than a love of mine, but a passion(激情).
24. What did the author think her dancing would be for the twelfth year?
A. A change for the better. B. A disappointment as before.
C. A proof of her potential. D. A challenge to her dancing skills.
25. How did Shanda help the author?
A. By offering her financial help. B. By entering her in a competition.
C. By coaching her for longer hours. D. By awakening her passion for dancing.
26. How did the author feel when she stepped on the stage?
A. Hopeless. B. Embarrassed. C. Scared. D. Nervous.
27. What can we learn from the author’s story?
A. Success lies in patience. B. Fame is a great thirst of the young.
C. A good teacher matters. D. You this to be treated with respect.

Some of the recent scientific studies have found that people who receive higher education live longer than those who do not. According to a new study, reading books extends lifespan (寿命) by up to two years, and the more often you read, the better.
Back in 1975, economists concluded that longer lifespan is linked to the wealth of a person,
and that wealth itself increases lifespan. It seemed self-evident: everything people need to be healthy from food to medical care costs money. But soon it was realized that the data didn’t always fit that theory. Economic success didn’t always mean longer lives. In the 1980s, researchers found gaining higher education is connected with a greater increase in lifespan than gains in wealth.
One fact is of teachers and college professors: they live longer than the rest of the population.
The reason is that they take part in research most of their lives for teaching or publishing, which increases their lifespan and most importantly also retards their aging process.
Let’s look at what benefits educated people. Educated people get routinely involved in social
networks; they get access to information because of their ability to understand information. They can easily make use of the health care system; they have more social support.
Reading helps us understand how other people think and feel. Reading improves our emotional
intelligence. This understanding can improve the quality of a person’s life as it would allow the person to act with better judgment and have more insight into the feelings and thought patterns of others. Research has shown that reading changes certain areas of the brain and causes certain other parts to be active. This effect can also be observed in adults who learn to read much later in life. Learning has no age limit. Each and every human is born with the right to be educated. So, don’t hold back your urge to learn. The goal of education is to improve intelligence as well as the lifespan.
28. What conclusion did economists in 1975 draw?
A. People need high-quality food to keep healthy.
B. Medical care costs more money than food.
C. Most old people have the habit of reading.
D. Wealthy people tend to live longer.
29. What did researchers find in the 1980s?
A. Health has nothing to do with wealth.
B. Education does affect people’s lifespan.
C. Economic success always belongs to professors.
D. Children from poor families can rarely gain higher education.
30. What does the underlined word “retards” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Speeds up. B. Turns back. C. Slows down. D. Contributes to.
31. What can we know about reading from the last paragraph?
A. It can help people understand humans’ brain better.
B. It is beneficial to people’s EQ and brain health.
C. It can change a person’s lifestyle completely.
D. It is effective against cancer.
D
The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there's a new bonus to add to the
ever-growing list. New research found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be
22级高一下二次段考英语试卷 2023.6.8 第 4 页 共 8 页
nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (失智症) in later life- and if they did,it came on a decade later than less sporty women.
Lead researcher Dr Helena Hörder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said: “These
findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people’s cardiovascular (心血管的)
fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia.”
For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were tired out to measure their peak (最大值的)cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload
was measured at 103 watts.
A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level with a capacity of 120 watts or higher, while 92 women were in the medium fitness category. A total of 59 were of low fitness level, with a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their tests stopped because of health problems.
These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During
that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness.
“However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and
dementia, it only shows an association.” said Hörder. “More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important.” She also admitted that a relatively small number of
women were studied, all of whom were from Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other
groups.
32. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. Positive effects of doing exercise. B. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged.
C. Experimental studies on dementia. D. Advantages of sporty women over men.
33. Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise?
A. To predict their maximum heart rate. B. To assess their cardiovascular capacity.
C. To change their habit of working out. D. To detect their potential health problems.
34. What do we know about Dr Hörder’s study?
A. It aimed to find a cure for dementia. B. The results were far from satisfactory.
C. Some participants withdrew from it. D. Data collection was a lengthy process.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia
B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise
C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia
D. Biking Improves Women’s Cardiovascular Fitness
