Day1: Arrive into Punta Arenas (Chile)
Arrive into Punta Arenas, where you will be met and transported to the group hotel. My daughter has a new app on her phone that can clear up and improve old photos. She used it to make copies of pictures from my old photo albums, brighten them up, and email them back to me. There were pictures of Mom, Dad, Grandma, my brothers, me and my first dog Duke. Looking at them brought back so many loving, happy memories. I even put one on my laptop computer as my new screensaver.
It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair, across from the woodstove, next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special Snoopy sweatshirt. There is a big smile on my face and a joyful shine in my eyes. It was how I spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a boy, reading an old book.
It is strange too that 50 years later that boy still lives inside of me. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, old books, Snoopy, hugging dogs, and reading books on cold winter days. Yet, when I look in the mirror now all I see is thinning, graying hair, age spots, and lots of wrinkles.
Once in a while I look into my eyes in the mirror. They are hiding behind glasses now. They are set a little deeper in my eyes. The innocence(天真) in them has been replaced with wisdom. But they still have that same joyful shine.
Looking at the little boy smiling at me from the computer screen and that 56-year-old man looking back at me in the mirror can be a bit confusing at times. They seem so different. Still, they are both me.
    24. What did the author's daughter do for him?
    A. She updated his computer. B. She improved his old photos.
    C. She downloaded a new app for him. D. She helped him forget bad memories.
    25. What can we see from the author's computer screen now?
    A. A sunny boy. B. A lovely dog.
    C. His reading room. D. His family members.
    26. What remains the same over the years?
    A. The author's competitive spirit. B. The author's innocent eyes.
    C. The author's old bookcase. D. The author's living habits.
    27. What's the author's attitude towards his present age?
    A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Appreciative. D. Uncaring.
    C
A newly restored(修复的) house in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, House of the Vettii, opened to the public on Tuesday.
The house likely belonged to two former slaves(奴隶) who became rich through the wine trade. The house offers visitors a look at everyday life in Pompeii. The city was buried by volcanic ash(灰) from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The restoration of the house is yet another sign of the rebirth of Pompeii.
“House of the Vettii is like the history of Pompeii and actually of Roman society within one house,” said Pompeii's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel. He said it shows the last period of Pompeian-made wall paintings.
The restoration of the wall paintings contained a new, better method using wax(蜡). Zuchtriegel thinks the wall paintings show the dreams, imagination and worries of the owners because they lived between these images.
And who were these owners? The Vet tis were two men—Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus. Pompeii experts say they were once slaves who were later freed. It is believed that they became wealthy through the wine trade. Some think the two were brothers.
Perhaps the Vet ti us men saw their own life story in the image of Hercules who overcame great difficulties. This possibility interests Zuchtriegel.
Architect Arianna Spinosa is director of the restoration. She said it represents the perfect Pompeii home, because of both the wall paintings and the architecture.
The house was discovered in the late19th century. It was closed in 2002 for urgent restoration work. After a partial reopening in 2016, it was closed again in 2020 for the final part of the work, which included the restoration of the wall paintings, floor and structural elements.
    28. Which of the following might be the owners of the house?
    A. Officers. B. Painters. C. Businessmen. D. Slaveowners.
    29. What can be known from the paintings according to Zuchtriegel?
    A. The method of making wine. B. Slaves' working scenes.
    C. The building process of a house. D. Feelings of the house owners.
    30. What happened to the house during the last 20 years?
    A. It was greatly damaged. B. It was repaired and improved.
    C. It was crowded with visitors. D. It was hidden away from people.
    31. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. House in Pompeii Shows Ancient Roman Life
    B. Volcanic Eruption Caused Disaster in Pompeii
    C. Pompeii Came to Life Due to Ancient Houses
    D. Two Slaves Created Wonder of Paintings

A fishing community in southern Brazil has an unusual helper: wild dolphins. Stories of people and dolphins working together to catch fish go back thousands of years. But storytellers have told the human side of the story. Until recently, it was impossible to know how dolphins have benefited from the relationship. Now, underwater listening devices can follow them underwater and suggest an answer.
In the coastal city of Laguna, scientists have used drones(无人机), underwater sound recordings and other tools to track dolphins. The scientists can see how local people and dolphins cooperate and benefit from each other's work. The most successful humans and dolphins are skilled at reading each other's body language.
This study clearly shows that both dolphins and humans are paying attention to each other's behavior, and that dolphins provide a clue to when the nets should be thrown. By working with the dolphins, the people catch more fish, and the dolphins are more successful in hunting, too.
In Laguna, the water is cloudy, so people are unable to see the fish. But the dolphins can send out sound waves and receive the sound waves reflected to them. Thus, they can find the fish. As the dolphins make the fish move toward the coast, the people run into the water holding fish nets. They wait for dolphins to sign exactly where fish are—the most common sign is what locals call “a jump”, or a sudden deep dive.
The researchers used underwater listening devices, or microphones, to track the positions of the dolphins and fish. Drones recorded the action from above. The more closely the people timed throwing their net to the dolphins’ signals, the more likely they were to catch a large number of fish.
When the nets fall in the water, it startles the fish. They then break into smaller schools that are easier for dolphins to hunt. The dolphins sometimes also take one or two fish from the net.
Still, the researchers in Brazil think that the Laguna alliance maybe in danger. Pollution threatens the dolphins and there are fewer local fisheries. Scientists hope that more attention to the unusual cooperation can help drive support to protect it.
    32. Which can best describe the relationship between the local people and dolphins?
    A. It is a win-win situation. B. People are a threat to dolphins.
    C. Dolphins need help from people. D. People use dolphins wisely.
    33. How do the dolphins find the fish?
    A. By seeing through the cloudy water. B. By diving into the water suddenly.
    C. By following the fish smell closely. D. By sending out and receiving sound waves.
    34. What does the underlined word “startles” in paragraph 6mean?
    A. Frightens. B. Catches. C. Attracts. D. Gathers.
    35. What do Brazilian researchers think of the traditional fishing?
    A. It will be more popular. B. It will be more valued.
    C. It is close to ending. D. It is out of date.

Dad is a retired police officer. He has many stories to tell. Here's one. In his district lived an infamous(声名狼藉的) family. The family consisted of a struggling single mother and her four sons,
The three older sons were all breaking laws as a career, like selling drugs, stealing items, etc. The youngest who was about 10 years old was sure to follow the same path. Many of the police officers knew the mom and in turn she knew them. She even called some policemen by their first names, just like my father.
She was always very helpful when questioned about where her sons had gone. On one visit, my dad had a conversation with her. During their talk she expressed her concerns about the future of her youngest boy. She felt powerless in guiding him to the straight and narrow. The environment would not allow it. She begged my father to give her an idea.
My dad agreed. He offered the only solution he could think of on the spot. He asked the concerned mother if she would allow her “baby” to leave the inner city and spend the summer in the suburbs(郊区) at our house.
My dad had three sons and a daughter (me). They discussed the plan and decided that it would be beneficial for the boy to see another side of family life which he had never experienced. So it was done.
We had a new member to our family for the summer. Although we must have seemed very unfamiliar to him, he had no trouble fitting in. We found he was an honest and friendly boy and got along well with the whole family. He enjoyed the pool in the backyard and he quickly get used to our way of life.

W: You may be right. Thank you for mentioning it.
    Text 2
W: Hey, David. Here's the book you're looking for. Did you get it from the library?
M: I borrowed it from my brother. He just bought it from a bookstore.
    Text 3
W: Will we reach Amsterdam today? I'm eager to see our children.
M: Probably not. We've been driving for five hours, and we still have four hours to go. We don't need to hurry, so let's stop here to get some dinner.
    Text 4
M: Can you see Nick? He's the boy who's painting a picture. He's wearing a hat.
W: Oh, yes, I can see. That's a great picture. Is it a cat?
M: Yes, I think it is.
    Text 5
W: John, why didn't you answer my telephone call this morning? You should have gone to a meeting.

W: Oh, I see. I asked William to go instead.
    M: What a pity!
    Text 6
W: Look at these photos of my pen friend Ada and her family. I took them during the trip.
M: So is she the one with long hair?
W: Oh, that's her. She looks a lot like her sister. And they used to have hair the same length, but hers was colored golden. It's a pity she had it cut, though, and it's no longer golden. I think it looked better when it was long and golden.
    Text 7
W: Hey, I'm placing an order online for some vegetables. Do you need anything? Why not buy things online?
M: Are you doing shopping online?
W: Yes. Everybody does that nowadays. Don't you?
M: No. I just go to the market. Don't you have one near home?
W: I do. But going to the market takes too much time.
    M: Exactly. I can't argue with that.
W: To me, the best thing about ordering goods online is that you get to choose where and when to receive your shopping.
I usually place my order at about 11: 00 before lunch, and have it sent to our office right before we get off work.
    M: That sounds so convenient!
    Text 8
W: Jack, why are you in a hurry?
M: We have to gather our things and leave right away or we're going to miss the four o'clock train to New York and won't be able to make it to Mr. Johnson's office by five.
W: I don't know we're meeting him today. I thought he would go away on a business trip this week.
M: He was, but his flight was put off because of the storm. I got a call from him while you were busy with a report. He
wants to see us today. Someone will pick us up at the station.
W: I wonder why he wants to see us in a hurry. I hope he has some good news for us.
    Text 9
M: So, Heather, you told me you got some good news this week?
W: I did. I am the new head of the communication department.
M: Good for you! How did that happen?

M: I've always thought you are a good leader. And you always have wonderful ideas for advertisement.
W: Thanks. I've worked really hard to get where I am.
M: So, what are you working on now?

    Text 10
W: A new form of transportation has come to the Amazon forest. It is a traditional boat from the area but with a modern addition: sunlight power. The boat is 16 meters long and can carry 20 people at a time .It has 32 boards that catch sunlight and store it as energy. The boat was designed to help connect faraway Achuar communities that live along the Amazon River. It is a choice to build roads through the forest, but the native people do not want to cut down the trees. It's also a cheaper choice to take a small airplane, which normally costs $15 between the villages. But regular flights are often cancelled because there are too few people who want to fly, or because of bad weather. Taking a private airplane can costa person $200, which is too expensive for most villagers. Besides being a much cheaper form of transportation, at $1 per ride, the solar boat is obviously better for the environment. It does not use the polluting gas of airplanes. Also, there is no need to cut down more of the Amazon rainforest.
