The Four Largest Zoos
A zoo, also known as a zoological park or zoological garden, is a place where animals are displayed in a secured (safe) way to the public. In this article, we want you to know about the four largest zoos in the world as of 2021.
l London Zoo, England
The London Zoo was established in the year 1828 for scientific study only. Later, it was open to the general public in the year 1847. This zoo works hard to protect endangered animals, such as the Sumatran tiger. The London Zoo is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day.
l Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the United States
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is home to around 7,000 animals of more than 800 species. The non-profit zoological park was opened in 1927. It is open every day except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
l Beijing Zoo, China
The Beijing Zoo covers a total surface area of 890,000 square meters. The traditionally-built zoological park is an attraction for millions of tourists. It is home to popular animal species such as giant pandas, South China tigers, and so on. The Beijing Zoo is open every day of the year.
l Berlin Zoological Garden, Germany
The huge variety of animal species makes Berlin Zoological Garden one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Regular animal feeding is one of its most popular attractions. When Kirk Alexander went missing for 11 days, an unlikely savior came to his rescue: his neighborhood pizza store.
Almost every night for more than ten years, Alexander ordered a late dinner from his local Domino’s pizza store. Until suddenly, for nearly two weeks, he didn’t.
It was a Saturday night when Domino’s general manager Fuller felt she could no longer ignore Alexander’s recent absence.
Fuller had known Alexander since 2009, when she started at the Domino’s store as a delivery driver and regularly made the short trip to Alexander’s home about six minutes away. She knew Alexander worked from home, and neighbors said he rarely left. She also knew that he had suffered some health issues in the past. Something, Fuller worried, was wrong.
On Sunday, Fuller sent her coworker Hamblen to stop by Alexander’s home. Hamblen approached Alexander’s door and knocked. He could plainly see that Alexander’s TV set was on, as were his lights; but after several minutes, Alexander still didn’t answer the door. Seriously worried now, Hamblen called Alexander directly. His phone went straight to voicemail.
Hamblen called to relay the upsetting developments to Fuller. She dialed 911. Soon, officers were on their way.
When deputies (警官) arrived at Alexander’s house, they broke the door down and found Alexander on the floor “in need of immediate medical attention.” Alexander was rushed to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition shortly after the dramatic rescue. In the following weeks, Fuller and the other employees went to visit him with flowers and cards, noting that Alexander greeted them with knowing smiles. Their role in his rescue did not seem lost on Alexander, though to Fuller, it was all just part of the job.
Fuller and her coworkers’ heroism did not go unnoticed. After their story went viral, they received invitations — and free flights to a Domino’s corporate rally in Las Vegas as a nod to their status as real-life superheroes.
24.How did Fuller get to know Alexander?
A.By going on a trip.
B.By delivering dinner to him.
C.By Hamblen’s introduction.
D.By working as Domino’s general manager.
25.What is the meaning of the underlined part in paragraph 7?
A.Alexander knew he was safe.
B.Alexander was in stable condition.
C.Alexander was happy to see his friends.
D.Alexander was aware of what had happened to him.
26.Why did Fuller and her workmates go to a corporate rally?
A.That was part of their job.
B.They were offered free flights.
C.They were rewarded for their kind act.
D.They wanted to be superheroes.
27.Which of the following can be used to describe Fuller?
A.Attentive and helpful. B.Hardworking and honest.
C.Careful and brave. D.Reliable and powerful.

Don’t know how to take care of your plants? A little spider-like robot will chase the sunlight, run to shade, dance when it’s doing well and stomp (跺脚) when it needs to be watered.
It’s called the HEXA Plant, a six-legged machine created by Vincross, a robotics company in Beijing, China.
The robot plant will crawl toward the sunlight when it needs it, then will rotate (转动) when it enjoys the sun in order to absorb its rays on all sides. When it needs to cool off, it will look for shade. It also plays with humans and dances when it is happy, moving its legs up and down. But it gets “angry” when it’s thirsty by stomping its legs.
With six legs, the HEXA Plant can move anywhere-in any direction and around any objects in its path. It’s even nimble enough to navigate (导航) unexpected drops, like if it had to suddenly step over a gap between two tabletops. It has a variety of “eyes”, including an infrared sensor (红外线感应器), a distance sensor, and a 720p camera with night vision, which could be very handy if you want it to send it out like a guard dog at night, to go check on any sudden noises. It has a built-in Wifi as well as various ports (USB) to expand its many talents.
So sure, it’ s not as cute as a garden gnome (守护精灵), but it can do a lot more than just stand there and look cute.
The inventor of the cute robot, Sun Tiangi, was inspired by a dead sunflower. He had idea why it died-whether it was because of the lack of sunshine or water. That’s when he had the idea for the walking plant. He says plants are passive. He wants to allow plants to experience movement.
28.What can’t the HEXA Plant do?
A.Find a cool place when it feels hot.
B.Play with people.
C.Drink water when it’s thirsty.
D.Move in any direction.
29.What does the underlined word “nimble” in the forth paragraph mean?
A.Happy. B.Clever. C.Angry. D.Passive.
30.What inspired Sun Tianqi to invent the HEXA Plant?
A.A walking plant. B.A dead sunflower.
C.Sunshine and water. D.A strange animal.
31.Where can we most probably read the passage?
A.In an advertisement. B.In a novel.
C.In a science magazine. D.In a storybook.

With lunar exploration rocketing, it poses many challenges. Among them is a fundamental question metrologists (计量学家)worldwide are working to answer: what time is it on the Moon?
The Moon doesn’t currently have an independent time. Each lunar mission uses its own timescale to coordinated universal time, or UTC—the standard against which the earth’s clocks are set. The approach works when the Moon hosts a handful of independent missions, but it will be a problem when there are multiple craft working together. Space agencies will also want to track them using satellite navigation, which relies on precise timing signals.
The most pressing need for lunar time comes from plans to create a dedicated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) for the Moon. To tackle this problem, representatives of space agencies and academic organizations worldwide met in November 2022 to start drafting recommendations on how to define lunar time.
Defining lunar time is not simple. According to the Special Theory of Relativity, clocks tick slower in stronger gravitational fields. The Moon’s gravitational pull is weaker than Earth’s, meaning a lunar clock would run faster than an Earth one.
Defining a lunar standard, with which all clocks are compared, will involve installing at least three master clocks that tick at the Moon’s natural pace, and whose output is combined by an algorithm (算法)to generate a more accurate ‘virtual’ timepiece.
What happens then depends on which option metrologists choose. They might decide to base lunar time on UTC. The alternative would be to use the synthesized (同步)output of the lunar atomic clocks as the Moon’s own independent, continuous time, and to track its relationship to UTC. That way, even if the connection with Earth is lost, clocks on the Moon will still agree with each other, allowing safe navigation and communications.
Setting lunar time is part of a much bigger picture. It will one day work for the more-distant planets that space agencies are ultimately targeting, such as Mars.
32.What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.The working principle of UTC.
B.The achievements of space mission.
C.The urgency to develop satellite navigation.
D.The problem of current lunar timing method.
33.What is the major barrier to defining lunar time?
A.Lack of professional guidance.
B.The disagreement among metrologists.
C.Different gravitational pull on the Moon.
D.The complexity of installing master clocks.
34.What’s the advantage of defining the Moon’s independent time?
A.Keeping the clocks on the Moon corresponding.
B.Preventing spacecraft losing connection with the Earth.
C.Helping humans land on the more-distant planets.
D.Making it easier to synchronize with UTC all the time.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
A.What Time Is It on the Moon?
B.When will Man Settle on the Moon?
C.Lunar exploration: A Career Bound to Revive
D.GNSS: A More Precise Lunar Tracking System

I was never very neat. Later in life I learned to attribute (把……归因于)this shortcoming to my creative genius, saying that my disorganization was simply the side of my unique gifts and talents. Yet, back at high school, I hadn’t come up with any impressive reasons for my big messes.
As fate would have it, my teacher paired me with Kim as my roommate. I’m not sure why he stuck us together. I don’t think he could have possibly picked two more different people to room together. Kim was extremely organized. She labeled everything and each item she owned had its place. Well, I think my bits and pieces of paper, odds and ends (零碎物品) would find their ways into places automatically. And apparently, my roommate didn’t seem to be on the same page with me.
As time went by, she got neater, while I got messier. She would complain about my dirty clothes. I would complain about Lysol (杀菌消毒剂) headaches. She would push gently my clothing over to one side and I would lay one of my books on her tidy desk.
One October evening, things got ugly. Kim came into the room and lost her temper right away after seeing one of my shoes had found its way beneath her bed. She picked it up, cast it toward my side of the room angrily and managed to knock the layer of clothes onto the floor (by the way, I had planned to fold them later). I jumped off the bed and immediately started yelling about her rudeness. She yelled back, “Look at the mess you’ve made! Could you at least clean up your own table!” I was sitting on my bed, fuming (发怒). She was sitting on hers, fuming. The room was thick with anger. It could have ended a with a violent fight if it hadn’t been for the phone call she received.
She picked the phone up and I could tell it was bad news from her family.

M: I’m worried about our trip to Paris next week.
W: Why?
M: There have been heavy rains that have lifted the Seine river to about 20 feet, its highest level since 1982. It actually reached 26.2 feet in 1910, if you can believe it. It’s normally only 5 feet high. Workers have said that the river won’t go back to its original level for another week or two.
W: Do you think the grounds beneath the Eiffel Tower are flooded?
M: They are. I saw a photo of it.
W: We won’t even be able to walk around and see the city!
M: I think we can still walk around. We just have to bring rain boots so our feet don’t get wet or muddy. Many buildings don’t have power, and I read that staff at the Louvre museum had to move all the artwork to higher floors. It’s still closed to visitors.
W: I hope we can at least see the Musée d’Orsay. That’s my favorite museum in the world.
M: That’s closed, too.
W: Oh no!

Last Sunday my father and I went fishing. We got up very early that day. When we went out, the moon could still be seen in the sky. The morning air was cool and I felt wind on my face. This made us very comfortable. We laughed and talked all the way while we were riding our bikes. By about 6 a.m. we were already sitting by the river. Fishing is not easy. If you want to be successful, you must be very careful. That day we had a good catch and we enjoyed ourselves very much. It was nearly 10 hours later when we returned home. We felt a little tired but happy. Fishing is a very good sport. I like it very much. I hope I can go with my grandfather during the summer vacation. He is also good at fishing.

故选A项。
28.C 29.B 30.B 31.C

根据第四段第二句中“like if it had to suddenly step over a gap between two tabletops(像如果它不得不突然跨越两个桌面之间的空隙)”可知,划线词所在句“It’s even nimble enough to navigate (导航) unexpected drops”意为“它甚至足够聪明导航意料之外的跌落”,所以划线词“nimble”意为“聪明的”,故选B项。
根据最后一段第一句“The inventor of the cute robot, Sun Tiangi, was inspired by a dead sunflower.”
通读全文,结合第二段“It’s called the HEXA Plant, a six-legged machine created by Vincross, a robotics company in Beijing, China.(它被称为HEXA植物,是由中国北京一家机器人公司Vincross创造的一个四条腿的机器人)”可知,本文主要讲述了一个机器人植物,我们最可能在科学杂志上读到。故选C项。

Space agencies will also want to track them using satellite navigation, which relies on precise timing signals.(当月球承载少数独立任务时,这种方法是有效的,但是当有多个飞船一起工作时,这将是一个问题。
根据第四段中的“Defining lunar time is not simple. According to the Special Theory of Relativity, clocks tick slower in stronger gravitational fields. The Moon’s gravitational pull is weaker than Earth’s, meaning a lunar clock would run faster than an Earth one.(设定月球时间并不简单。根据狭义相对论,时钟在更强的引力场中走得更慢。月球的引力比地球的弱,这意味着月球时钟会比地球时钟跑得快。)”可知,设定月球时间的障碍是月球上的引力。故选C项。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“The alternative would be to use the synthesized (同步)output of the lunar atomic clocks as the Moon’s own independent, continuous time, and to track its relationship to UTC. That way, even if the connection with Earth is lost, clocks on the Moon will still agree with each other, allowing safe navigation and communications.(另一种方法是使用月球原子钟的同步输出作为月球自己独立的连续时间,并跟踪其与UTC的关系。这样,即使月球与地球失去了联系,月球上的时钟仍然会彼此一致,从而实现安全的航行和通信)”可知,设定月球独立的时间后,即使失去与地球联系,月球上的时间始终是保持一致。故选A项。
根据首段“With lunar exploration rocketing, it poses many challenges. Among them is a fundamental question metrologists (计量学家)worldwide are working to answer: what time is it on the Moon?(月球探测火箭带来了许多挑战。其中有一个基本问题是世界各地的计量学家正在努力回答:月球上现在是几点?)”以及下文中分析设定月球时间的必要性和挑战以及方案可知,本文主要是围绕着设定独立月球时间展开,因此A项“月球上几点了”与主题内容吻合。故选A项。

38.根据上文“Go on a walk. Walking—with zero social media disturbance—is a gateway to gratitude.(去散步。散步——零社交媒体干扰——是通往感恩的大门。)”可知,本段中主要表达的是散步的作用,G项“这是让你的大脑进行积极思考的最佳时机”中It指代的就是上文中提到的散步时光,G项中的“to set up your brain for positive thinking(让你的大脑进行积极思考)”与前文“mentally express gratitude for everything I can think of during the walk.(在心里对我所能想到的一切表达感激之情。)”

故填 an。

She picked the phone up and I could tell it was bad news from her family. When Kim hung up, she buried her face in her hands, her body shaking as she sobbed. Her dad was badly ill in hospital. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. I walked towards her and patted her on the back. Obviously, my pat was of little comfort. Instead, she threw herself onto the bed and cried into her pillow, sinking into her deep sorrow.
I found myself lost for words and I decided to do something. I started to collect my odds and ends, clothes and shoes, swept the floor and tidied the table. I even cleaned her side. I was so absorbed that I didn’t even notice Kim stop crying and sit up staring at me in disbelief. I stepped towards her, saying softly, “It will be OK.” Kim reached her hand over to grasp mine, murmuring “Thank you?”. Suddenly, I realized the golden rule between friends was putting yourself into others’ shoes.
