Five-year-old Willard Wigan couldn’t tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9 because of dyslexia, a learning disability. Usually, his mind drifted — to playing outside, to his dog, or to the ants. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them, small and insignificant. He noticed the ants were coming and going from a hole in the dirt. Gathering pieces of wood, Willard constructed a little building for ants.
At school, Willard still had problems, but he knew he could do something special. Willard created tiny furniture for the ant houses. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow. At age nine, Willard began carving (雕刻) faces on toothpicks. When he showed his mother the carved faces, she said, “This is what you do well. You must work hard to be the best.” Years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a full stop at the end of a sentence.
Willard works best at night when there are few disturbances. He often works for months to complete a sculpture. Willard’s favorite paintbrush is one hair from the back of a dead fly! To move his sculptures, Willard uses an eyelash(睫毛). But even that can be tough. Once, while moving a microscopic Alice in Wonderland, his cell phone rang. Terrified, Willard took in a quick breath. When he looked back, Alice was gone. After working for weeks to carve her, he’d accidentally breathed her in!
Willard sculpts everything from famous people to fictional characters. Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says, “Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about persevering and achieving your dreams.” Willard Wigan who felt small as a boy has shown something small can really be big.

As more schools open for in-person learning and some organized sports start again, many children are returning to the world after having packed on extra body weight. While data is few on whether there’s been a rise in children’s weight over the pandemic(大流行病), some health professionals have seen worrisome signs. Suzannah Stivison, a nurse in Kensington, Md. , said that some of her patients put on what she calls “the other COVID- 19”— as in, 19 pounds
A loss of daily arrangements, in school and extracurriculars, left kids looking for a sense of control that many have found in eating. One of the ways that people regained a routine and a schedule within their families was most likely around meals. Since last March, adults joined the bread-baking craze and ate junk food as they liked.
Stivison herself admits the bad effect of the pandemic. “I never have Cheetos in my house. But all of a sudden, they appeared, ”she said. “And this has been a phenomenon that I have seen in lots of houses. Eating became something we could control. And it’s also something we use for comfort.”
Children tend to gain weight during periods like summer vacation, when fewer are getting regular exercise through organized sports and physical education. But there are supportive ways parents can help get their kids back to a healthier lifestyle. It’s less about talking and more about setting an example. Talking about risk factors such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease doesn’t really work, especially with younger kids. Kids know they’re heavier than their peers. They know they get out of breath.
However, parents can model good habits like exercising an hour a day or keeping the house stored with healthier foods. “It really comes down to the modeling and the opportunity we can control what food comes into the house, ” Stivison said. “And so guess what? I’ve stopped buying Cheetos. ”
28. What does the phrase “the other COVID-19” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Patients’ dress size. B. A serious disease.
C. Children’s weight gain. D. An effective treatment.
29. What did kids do to regain a sense of control?
A. They ate unhealthy food. B. They helped prepare meals.
C. They arranged schoolwork. D. They learned bread-baking.
30. Why is Cheetos mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To prove the benefit of eating. B. To recommend a popular food.
C. To share a way to find comfort. D. To show a change in eating habit.
31. What can parents do to help their kids?
A. Ask the kids to exercise regularly. B. Set an example of positive living.
C. Talk about the risks of extra weight. D. Control the amount of food at home.
D
Is it likely that a person who originally has no language ability is cheerfully discussing the World Cup with you? The answer is yes.
In a paper published in Nature Communications on November 8, 2022, researchers have successfully changed the brain waves of an aphasic (失语症) paralyzed person into sentences, which are displayed on the computer screen and can “say” thousands of words, as is intended.
This participant is 30 years old. A decade ago he was aphasic due to stroke, his arms and legs unable to move. He depended on a pole pinned on the baseball cap to click the letters on the screen to communicate with people. It's quite inconvenient.
Last year researchers from the University of California used the latest technology to implant (植入) a device into the speech motor area of his brain and connect it with a neural (神经的) instrument to monitor brain wave patterns when he expressed different words. They used computer programs to build a language model with a vocabulary of 50 words for him. When he used these words to “speak” in his mind, his brain wave movement was turned into complete sentences and shown on the screen. For months the team recorded his neural activity when he “spoke”, used AI to identify various patterns and linked them to the words. Once a researcher asked on the screen, “Do you want some water?” And he answered, “No. I'm not thirsty.”
“The spelling speed of the device reaches 29.4 characters per minute. The character error rate is only 6.13%. The offline test results show it can be expanded to a large vocabulary containing 9000 words, maintaining a low character error rate-8.23%,” said Sean Metzger, the lead author of the paper. “Aphasic people like to use this device as it makes communication convenient. Anything is possible.”
More aphasic people are needed to participate in the test, which is still a long way from promotion. Experts warn although the study results are impressive, electrode implantation is risky.
32. What is the purpose of the research?
A. To assist aphasic patients to talk.
B. To better people’s communication.
C. To cure those incapable of speaking.
D. To improve patients’ language skills.
33. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. The practical application of the findings.
B. The working process of the implanted device.
C. A disadvantage of the language model.
D. A supporting evidence for the research results.
34. What can be inferred from Sean Metzger’s words?
A. The device may have a promising future.
B. The device can do anything for aphasic group.
C. Further research will centre on avoiding errors.
D. Further research will face many new challenges.
35. Which word best describes the author's attitude to the device?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

You are not practicing at all,” said Jim's mother.
“Mom, you know how fast I am! Then why should I waste my time running? Only I will win;no one else will win!” shouted Jim. “Jim, you may be right but talent without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly,” his mother warned him. Jim just laughed and shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders. He was so confident that would win the prize as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tim, a classmate of Jim was also participating in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he was very devoted and practiced till late night and had developed great endurance (耐力) and willpower (意志) to win the race.

Suddenly, Jim went ahead of Tim. The crowd cheered for him. Soon, it was clear that Jim was going to beat Tim. But, when they were just a few metres away from the finishing line, Tim surprisingly picked up speed and ran ahead of Jim and reached the finishing line. Tim surprised everyone with his brilliant performance. He proudly received the prize and the money.
Jim’s mother came to Tim and praised him for his hard work. She said, “You deserve it for your devotion and effort!” “Thanks, Ms! ” Tim replied with an open smile and walked happily with his prize. Jim hung his head in shame. His mother turned to him and said, “Look, Jim, talent without hard work is simply useless. That boy put efforts and got rewarded for his hard work. Hard work is the only way to success. ” Now Jim understood the importance of hard work. This incident brought about a major change in his life.

Text 10
M: Last summer I went to Miami Beach, Florida, where I stayed for two weeks. My friend John and I flew to Miami from New York. It was the first time for both of us to travel by air. We sat near the window of the plane and enjoyed an unusual and beautiful view of the world. The reason why we went to Miami was that the cost was lower than other cities. We stayed at a hotel near the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. In the afternoon, we would go swimming in the ocean, lie in the sun, or go water-skiing. After dinner in the evening, we usually went dancing or enjoyed ourselves in the cinema. The two weeks went by too quickly. We were both unwilling to leave when we had to.
