I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.
After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a comment (评论) about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.
I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience.

Sun Rui, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She had looked for an out-of-school English course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class. “It is because of the strict rules on subject-tutoring classes (辅导班) out of schools, many parents like me choose sports or other classes for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to reduce the study pressure on young students.
On July 24, Chinese government introduced the rules in order to reduce the burden of homework and after-class tutoring for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and after-class services provided by schools. For example, homework for primary children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. Out-of-school classes cannot teach students knowledge that is ahead of the school curriculum. No subject lessons can be given on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese children in cities, from grade 1 to grade 12, take part in out-of-school subject classes. This has led to many social problems such as students’ falling levels of physical fitness, more mental health problems and huge family costs, said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher with the National Institute of Education Sciences.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope the children’s life can be more relaxing during holidays”, a parent in Guangzhou told Xinhua. However, there are also some parents who have new fears. A parent in Shanxi said that although she agreed with the new rules, she was worried that both she and her husband had no time to be with her son.
28. The reason why Sun Rui let her son sign up for a swimming class instead of an English course is that ________.
A. her son would like to be a swimming athlete.
B. the government made rules on subject-tutoring classes.
C. she considered her son has mastered English well enough.
D. she wanted to set an example to other parents.
29. According to the rules introduced on July 24, ________.
A. primary students in grade one and grade two have no homework after school.
B. junior high school students should do their homework for more than 90 minuets.
C. out-of-school classes can’t teach any knowledge in school textbooks.
D. during summer vacations, junior students can have subject cases outside schools.
30. In Chu Zhaohui’s opinion, taking part in out-of-school subject classes can ________.
A. help children stay fit.
B. have a positive effect on children’s mental health.
C. increase some families’ extra spending.
D. help children learn better at school.
31. What are parents’ reaction to the new rules?
A. Some parents feel anxious about their children’s study at school.
B. They want their children to take part in more out-of-school classes.
C. They all think it is hard for them to accept the rules right now.
D. Some parents have new worries for they have no time to stay with their children after school.

Help you sleep better
Of the 20, 000 people we surveyed for our recent sleep snapshot (简要说明), just 12 percent said they woke up feeling good and 75 per cent said they had trouble falling asleep at least some of the time. Since you’re going to spend a third of your life sleeping, it’s worth developing some healthy habits.
It’s important to set aside enough time to get adequate sleep each night. On average, adults need eight hours to feel properly rested. Some require slightly less while others require a little more—it’s best to listen to your own body. Unless you have long sleep requirements, you should limit your time in bed to no more than 8.5 hours.
Going to bed and getting up at about the same time each day is one of the best ways to set your internal body clock. Choose a wake-up time that works for you and aim to get up within 30 minutes of that time, seven days a week. According to sleep experts, you should avoid sleeping in, even if you have had a poor night’s sleep. The extra sleep drive will help you sleep better the following night, and sleeping in late can actually disturb your body clock.
Slow down the process from wake-up time to sleep time with a period of relaxing activities an hour or so before bed. Keep away from blue screens, violent exercise, doing work or discussing emotional problems. Instead, try to listen to music, read a book or take a bath. This can help you avoid stressful thoughts when your head hits the pillow.
Your bedroom should be quiet, dark, comfortable and slightly cool. Avoid using computers, mobile phones or watching television in bed, and remove any physical reminders of work that might increase stressful thoughts. To strengthen the association your brain makes between being in bed and being asleep, limit your bedroom activities to sleep.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The right amount of sleep. B. The quality of sleep.
C. Different sleep requirements. D. Good sleep habits.
33. What do the underlined words “sleeping in” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Going to bed late B. Getting up late.
C. Having no sleep. D. Having a poor sleep.
34. Which of the following activities can make sleep difficult?
A. Exercising hard. B. Enjoying music.
C. Doing some reading. D. Taking a bath.
35. What can we infer from the text?
A. Most people can sleep well at night.
B. The earlier you wake up, the better.
C. Stressful thoughts help you fall asleep.
D. A right sleep environment is helpful.
