Alexander Tsao, a keen rock climber for several years, was climbing the walls at a gym near his home in Redmond, Washington, when he noticed that the ropes were frequently being replaced with new ones. Just 16 at the time, Tsao wondered what happened to the old ropes. He asked the gym owners and found out the ropes had to be discarded regularly due to safety regulations. He was surprised to find that so many ropes were sent to landfills
This discovery inspired him to find a solution to the environmental issue of climbing rope waste. He considered possible ideas and ways to upcycle the discarded ropes, deciding to turn them into leashes (拴狗带) for dogs.
Once he had made his plan, Tsao contacted all the climbing gyms in Washington State, introducing his idea of recycling old ropes. Some were doubtful at first but many gyms agreed to donate their used ropes. Tsao spent months testing and designing his products and filing documents to become a nonprofit organization which he called Rocks2Dogs.
To make the leashes, Tsao and volunteers first wash and dry the ropes. They cut them into different lengths, ranging from 4 to 10 feet, and then burn the ends to prevent them from fraying (磨损). They add a clip and handle to each end, and cover the leash’s hardware with shrink tape.
Because making the leashes now is a full-time job, Tsao has asked his friends, family and neighbors for help. “We have made and sold over a thousand leashes, which add up to over 10,000 feet of rope being saved from landfills,” says Tsao. The leashes come in various colors. There are also half price leashes made from ropes with slight imperfections. These start at $7.49 while most other leashes start at $14.99. To date, the nonprofit has raised more than $35,000. Much of this money has been donated to animal shelters.

A.Efforts to promote the ropes. B.Steps for making the leashes.
C.Ways to reuse discarded waste. D.Reasons for starting Rocks2Dogs.
7.What is the last paragraph intended to tell us?
A.Tsao succeeds in the leash business.
B.More people volunteered to help Tsao.
    C.Animal protection gains more attention.
D.Leashes are not very popular with pet owners.

Technology is everywhere. Almost all of us carry some piece of technology with us every time. It’s true to say that technology makes our lives easier. However, scientists are saying that we need to give ourselves a break-otherwise we put ourselves at risk of developing hundreds of health problems. With all this free time, why not put it to good use and do something without technology?
To start with, you could learn a new skill. There are hundreds of possibilities: crafts(工艺), cooking, learning a musical instrument or a new sport. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to cook for your family, but haven’t had time? Perhaps you feel like learning how to knit(编织), so you can have a new sweater for the autumn? You could use your free time to learn something new—and perhaps it will lead to an exciting chance in the future.
If you just want to relax, why not go to a beach? Take along your favorite book and relax on the sand, or go for a walk along the coastline. If you don’t live near a beach, you could go to your local park. Why not take along a picnic, or try and discover some of the local wildlife?
Little things, like challenging yourself to complete a crossword or a Sudoku, are a great place to start. You could even follow the latest fashion: adult coloring books! Coloring is amazing, and it can be a nice way to escape from the pressure of modern life!
Whatever you choose to do with your summer, try something new! You might surprise yourself and find a hidden talent within you; you might make new friends along the way. Next time you find yourself aimlessly switching channels, have a think at what else you could spend your time doing.
8.According to scientists, using technology continuously may ________.
A.make people live longer B.solve many social problems
C.provide people with more free time D.have a bad effect on people’s health
9.What is suggested in the second paragraph?
A.Learning something new. B.Taking exciting chances.
C.Making a living by knitting. D.Getting together with the family.
10.What can we learn about the Sudoku?
    A.It’s a great tourist attraction. B.It’s a challenging game.
C.It’s a new fashion show. D.It’s a book about coloring.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Make More New Friends B.Follow the Latest Fashion
C.Make Plans for Summer Holidays D.Take a Break from Technology

Animals might not be able to speak or master advanced language techniques, but they certainly have other ways of communicating. Whale song, wolf howls, frog cries — even the fast dance of the honeybee or the friendly waves of a dog’s tail — are among so many ways animals pass on information to each other and to other living things of the animal kingdom.
When it comes to hearing communication, not every member of a species is just alike. Animals in different places have often been sounding off in different dialects. For example, one study shows that blue whales produce different types of sounds depending on where they are from. Some bird species are the same way. And what about those birds that live on the border between territories (领地) of different songbirds? They are often able to communicate in a way accepted by each of their groups of neighbors.
Communication between different species can play important roles as well. One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird). The two species have nothing in common except for the fact that they share a general habitat and enemies. So when an iguana hears a bird make a signal of danger for other birds, it probably knows to be watchful for arriving enemies, too.
However, as noise pollution has become a serious problem all across the globe, many animals are now under fire. Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin. Studies have found that songbirds, too, suffer from noisy city surroundings. Some species have had to change their singing styles, producing songs that sound louder, in order to be heard above the noise. Their new voices usually lead to stranger and somewhat worse styles of singing that female birds find decidedly less sexy.
12.What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2?
A.Various dialects can also happen to the same animals.
B.Animals communicate with each other in different ways.
C.Different animals have different ways of communicating.
D.Animals from different places may make the same sound.
13.What can we learn about iguanas?
A.They communicate by singing. B.They are born with poor hearing.
C.They often bring bad luck to humans. D.They get along well with flycatchers.
14.Due to noise pollution, songbirds ________.
A.find it hard to attract the opposite sex. B.produce more songs that sound sad.
C.begin to communicate by dancing . D.can not find food easily any more.
15.The author develops the passage mainly ________.
A.by raising questions B.by following time order
C.by providing examples D.by analyzing the data

How to Be a Good Tourist
We travel not only for work but also for fun and learning. Restaurants, galleries, temples and architecture...These places are like homes for people who live and work there. How would you want visitors to behave in your own home? 16 There are many ways of doing this without sacrificing our own holiday.
Do your homework. 17 Guides will help you when you get to the site, but is that the best place to go? Is it popular only because the one-day tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit? You’d better check it out.
18 Walk around, even if in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers.
Help preserve the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags and shows. 19 This way, you don’t encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites.
And here’s the big one — good manners are nearly universal. 20 If that doesn’t sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home.
    A.Experience the place.
B.Always have a cloth bag with you.
C.Read about the places you want to visit.
D.Try to buy something from the local stores.
E.A good tourist is polite, positive and eco-sensitive.
F.We’ve cleaned up after ourselves and taken only good memories.
G.I think we would like them to make it a little better because of their visit.

根据后文such as princesses and angels可知,剪成的纸人不止一个,故用复数形式characters。

故what改为which。
短语:help sb. do sth.“帮助某人做某事”,结合前文“Scientists is always inventing new and better robots, which will play an important role in our future lives.”

    52.One possible version:
I often imagine what my life would be like in the future. I think my life will be very different in ten years. I will be twenty-eight years old by then. I will have my own family, probably with a lovely child. I hope I will work in a computer company as a program designer. I will enjoy my work and get along well with my colleagues. I’will do a good job in whatever I do. In my free time, I will continue to take regular exercise, such as swimming, running and various ball games. On my holidays, I will travel around the world. In a word, my life will be much richer and more colorful.
In my free time , In a word , such as等介词短语,避免了文章句式的单一。 I hope I'll work in a computer company as a program designer.(省略that的宾语从句)I'll do a good job in whatever I do.(whatever引导的宾语从句)In a word, my life will be much richer and more colorful.(比较级+and+比较级连用)等,这些都给朴素的语言带来了亮点。
