Here are some works of writers who got famous by just one book.
    The Picture of Dorian Gray
It was written in just 3 weeks and released in 1890 in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine and it brought an enormous amount of reputation to the author instantly. After the publication of the novel, a huge popular anger erupted in society. People called it immoral and tried to ban it. But the book turned out to be the most successful novel of the playwright Oscar Wilde.
    Winnie-the-Pooh
Alan Milne was quite a famous playwright before releasing the stories about Winnie-the-Pooh. But the success of the book became so big that all of his other works went far into the shadows. Milne didn’t like that he was considered a children’s writer. As sad as it might sound, his works for kids turned out to be like Frankenstein’s monster: the creature that swallowed its creator.
    The Catcher in the Rye
In 1940s, Salinger gained a reputation of a skillful novelist. However, the author faced real success after he released his novel The Catcher in the Rye in 1951. The book, written about a 17-year-old teenager, experienced popularity and earned the love of readers all around the world. Surprisingly, the author forbade any adaptations of the book into movies or theatrical performances.
    Wuthering Heights
Unlike her sister, Charlotte, poet Emily Bront only wrote one novel. It was published in 1847 and stayed almost unnoticed during the author’s life. The novel got universal recognition in the late 19th century and took a strong place in English literature. The novel has been screened many times in the 20th century.
21.What do Oscar Wilde and Alan Milne have in common?
A.They were both playwrights. B.They were good at writing essays.
C.They got famous for kids’ books. D.They were not recognized at first.
22.What can we know about The Catcher in the Rye?
A.It was Salinger’s only one novel. B.It can’t be made into movies.
C.It enjoyed popularity mainly in the US. D.It was written specially for teenagers.
23.Which of the following became famous long after its publication?
A.The Picture of Dorian Gray. B.Winnie-the-Pooh.
C.The Catcher in the Rye. D.Wuthering Heights.
    B
A long time ago, on neighboring farms lived two brothers. But disagreement arose between them. It was the first serious one between them in 40 years of farming peacefully side by side. In the end, they fell apart.
One morning, a man with a carpenter’s toolbox came for some work. The elder brother said, “I just have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek(河沟). My younger brother lives there. It was he who used his bulldozer(推土机) to dig the creek last week to upset me. So I want you to build me a fence, an 8-foot-high fence so I won’t see his place any more.” The carpenter smiled and said, “I see. I’ll try to do a wonderful job that satisfies you.” Then the elder brother left and went downtown.
At sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s jaw dropped open when he saw what the carpenter had done. To his surprise, there was no fence there at all! Instead, there was a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! What a piece of work! He saw his younger brother coming up to him with the hands outstretching. “You are quite a man to build this bridge after all I have said and done to you! ” The brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. When they turned to see the carpenter, he was lifting his toolbox on his shoulder, ready to leave. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other work for you,” said the elder brother. “I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have so many more bridges to build.”
24.What was the life like for the two brothers before the disagreement?

Not all bodies of water are as evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean, an S-shaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization. Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality(生命力) has been much written about by ancient poets.
“Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind’s earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic.
When the wind is from the west
All the waves that cannot rest
To the east must thunder on
Where the bright tree of the sun
Is rooted in the ocean’s breast.
As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull. It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling.
It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath—perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean, but where it meets land, its waters are bathing up and down a sandy beach. It copies nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too: unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.
28.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is ____________________.
    A.lacking in liveliness B.always energetic
C.shaped like a square D.preferred by ancient poets
29.What is the purpose of using the poem “Storm at Sea” in the passage?
A.To show the vastness of the sea.
B.To picture the power of the ocean.
C.To prove the strength of the storm.
D.To describe the movement of the waves.
30.What does the underlined word “symbiotic” mean?
    A.Moving harmoniously. B.Breathing peacefully.
    C.Growing rapidly. D.Existing together.
31.In the last paragraph, the Atlantic is compared to _________________.
A.a lively animal B.a meaningful world
C.a beautiful and poetic place D.a flesh and blood human
    D

Overcommitment happens when you decide to do more things than you realistically have time to do. ____37____ Your quality of life also suffers because overcommitment leaves you less time to take care or yourself. It's preferable to do one or two things well than to do ten things poorly.
Time management coach Elizabeth Saunders suggests creating a budget for your time like you do with money. Saunders suggests adding up your time commitments to other people and the time needed to meet your personal goals. ___38___
One tool that may be helpful in avoiding overcommitment is a calendar. Schedule times for everything you need to do. But don't feel forced to fill every blank space. ____39____ Do your commitments actually match your priorities? Could you give up some of them or pass them off to other people? Furthermore, learning how to say “no” politely but firmly also helps with overcommitment.
I have a rule that I never immediately agree to any long-term time commitments. I always ask for some time to think. ___40___ Having time to think about a potential assignment gives me space to say“no”if I need to.
A.Take it easy; the following tips are helpful.
B.When this happens, the quality of your work suffers.
C.It is also worth looking at your current commitments.

W: My house has been broken into. And I’m still in a state of shock.
M: Did you see the thief? Are you injured?
    W: No, I didn’t see anyone and I wasn’t hurt.
M: OK. When did you discover your house broken into?
W: After I got back from night duty around 6:00 a.m.
M: OK. Do not touch anything in the house. We need to look for finger prints.
W: Well, I’ll do as you say.
    M: Is there anything missing?
W: Yes. An envelope with some money in it. And the locker was broken.
    M: Other valuables?
W: I’m not sure. I need to check with my husband.
M: Alright, we’ll come to your house later.

M: What do you think of my speech, honey? Too dull? Give me some advice.
W: Well, it was not bad! The delivery could be a little unnatural at times though.
M: Should I try to memorize the speech instead of reading it then?
W: To be honest, neither will help you connect with an audience. You can work with an outline and use cards to remind you.
M: Oh, that makes more sense. Anything else?
W: If I were you, I’d try to be more active and use hand gestures.
M: I suppose I could be more aware of my body language.
W: Right. Also it wouldn’t kill you to add in a funny story or two. The audience will be very interested.
M: Oh, I see. Thanks, honey.
    Text:10
W: I’m here today to tell you about my career as a writer. I wrote my first novel in 1987. I called it Sunset. However, it didn’t come out until 1996, four years after my first published novel. After school, I went to university where I studied law. However, I never practiced law. I was lucky enough to get a holiday job on a local newspaper as a reporter, and I stayed there. This, of course, gave me lots of opportunities to improve my writing skills. I had my first novel published during that period. It was called Tango. It wasn’t a great success, but it gave me useful contacts in the publishing world. My second novel, The Ballet Dancer, was much more successful. It even won a prize for new novelists. Since then, I’ve written three more novels and have also had a couple of collections of short stories published. At present, I’m experimenting with writing a play—The List. I feel I’m learning a great deal from this work.
