As children we are well-trained to find the right answer. We are rewarded for A's, the honor
roll and acing the test. Our education trains us to follow the rules and deliver the expected answers. When we do, awards and congratulations follow. Yet when we grow up, it gets a little harder. Life and careers don’t have tests with an A if we get the “right” answer.
I recently had coffee with a college student who will graduate. She is struggling with what
she wants for her career. She wants her parents to be proud of her and to continue the success she has had in school. She also talked about other students in her graduating class who are set to do "some big things," like working for impressive companies. Yet she wasn't sure of the right answer for using her degree. She said that deep down she was hoping that someone might give her the answer.
We both agreed that it comes down to not looking for the right answer, but her answer. The
grown-up definition of the “right answer” is different than that in school. What would you do if you weren't afraid? It takes time to know these answers. And they can change over time and at any point in your career. My encouragement is to get valued advice and input, of course, but finally to look within yourself for the answers. It helps to come back to:
What do I want to be known for? What is my definition of success? What am I best at? If I
had no fears, what would I do? What is one step I can take today to move me toward my goal (even if it's not perfectly clear)?
I find these types of questions are more helpful at getting to our unique answer rather than
“right answer” questions, such as: What will my parents want? What degree or job will mark me as accomplished to the world? What is my best option based on where I work today?
    24. What does the author mean to say in the first paragraph?
    A. Life is harder for adults than children.
    B. Academic excellence is not necessary.
    C. It is not helpful to follow the rules in school.
    D. Rules in life are different from those in school.
    25. What is wrong with the college student?
    A. She does badly in her studies.
    B. Her parents are not proud of her.
    C. She feels puzzled about her life career.
    D. She is not sure whether to do" some big things".
    26. When looking for the answer in life, you need to .
    A. trust your parents B. listen to your heart
    C. follow valued advice D. learn from your classmates
    27. Which of the following questions might not help you to seek your answer?
    A. What do I love to do?
    B. What matters most to me in life?
    C. What will make me look successful?
    D. What will I regret not doing when I'm 80?
    C
An expert has revealed whether carrots truly help you see in the dark and if an apple a day actually keeps the doctor away.
Nutritionist Lily Soutter also clarifies if it really takes seven years to digest chewing gum (口香糖),whether you can swim after eating and if fish is good for the brain.
She confirms that while carrots contain lots of vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy vision, they don't help you see any better in the dark. Similarly, enjoying an apple a day won't in itself reduce your chances of needing to visit a doctor, and chewing gum doesn't take seven years to leave your system. And sadly, eating celery (芹菜) doesn't burn more calories than you gain from eating it, despite 23 percent believing it to be the case.
Yogurt maker Onken teamed up with Lily. They conducted a survey of 2,000 people, finding half of them are“confused" about food fact and fiction.

But we're learning new things all the time about what different foods do for our health, such as the benefit of fermented (发酵的) foods to our gut and immune system. While some of what's passed down over generations ; is super advice, some of it isn't."
The study also found that swimming right after eating is wrongly believed by 34 percent of adults to be something you shouldn't do. In fact, it's exercising to high intensity immediately after eating that should be avoided, as it can give you a sudden pain.
Almost half believe fish is good for the brain. They're right, as long as they're eating oily fish, essential omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish contribute to normal brain function. because of “fake news" wrongly believed by many of those surveyed include eating chicken soup helps if Other a cold (27%) and drinking fruit juice is as healthy as eating whole fruit (17%).
    28. What can we learn about Lily Soutter's findings?
A.an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
    B. Eating celery surely helps us lose weight.
    C. Eating carrots contributes to healthy vision.
    D. Carrots help us see things better in the dark.
    29. Why is Onken mentioned in the text?
    A. To appeal to more people to find right food facts.
    B. To inform people of the benefit of fermented foods.
    C. To prove there are many makers working with Lily.
    D. To point out many people's mistaken nutrition ideas.

    A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.

    C. Welcome to the Most Popular Food Myths

ChatGPT, launched in November, 2022, has attracted over 100 million monthly users in just
two months, which is considered the fastest-growing consumer app. 36
ChatGPT can write emails, computer code, even academic papers and poems. 37
With various functions, it is suspected to do no good to multiple areas, above all the higher education.
So is ChatGPT a benefit or a trouble?
38 Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could prompt more
students to cheat, especially in exams. 39 Andreas Schleicher, director of education and
skills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he welcomes ChatGPT because “it gives people a chance” to concentrate less on tasks that technology can perform equally well.
According to a survey covering more than 100 educators and over 1,000 students, one-third
of the educators said they believe ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities, while the rest supported students having access to it. The attitude of most students sees a distinct
    difference. 40
As a result, the observed value and usefulness of ChatGPT seem to outweigh the risks. What we should focus on has shifted to better deal with the chatbot and its development.
A.They admitted having sought help from ChatGPT to complete their homework.
B.The worry is that ChatGPT could change the basic training structure of higher education.
C.By comparison, others regard it as a blessing rather than a curse.
D.It is undoubtedly a shocking achievement.
E.It is widely discussed whether and to what extent AI should be involved in a scientific article. F.The answers varies greatly across the world.
G.Also, it has succeeded in passing different kinds of exams.

“If mum finds out that I’m going to the beach, I’ll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her dish-washing, “Where are you going?” I answered back without hesitation, “I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed in relief. My plan had worked so far! I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at full speed.
After half an hour I was at the beach seeking for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes . After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk. For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and it fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further away from the shore, I was excited. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed tangled up with my feet and I could not swim properly.
I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. “If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,” I thought silently.

    衡阳师范学院祁东附属中学2022-2023学年高二下学期期中考试
    答案
    英语
    第一部分:听力
    1. C
W: With Scott and Tina both up for the same job, I feel nervous when they’re in the same room.
M: I just try to act normally, like tell them a joke or something. That usually breaks the ice.
    2. B
M: I’m really looking forward to the party. But it’s all the hard work you have to do before that I don’t enjoy.
W: Oh, it’s fine. It gives us the chance to get the house nice and tidy.
    3. C
M: I think online shopping will replace going out to shops. Online stores can offer much lower prices than the high-street stores.
W: I doubt it. I think we’ll always want to touch some things physically and see them before we buy them.
    4. B
W:We are trying to start a club. M:How is it going?
W:We were hoping for at least fifteen people, but only two signed up.
    5.C
M: My wife and I are planning on driving from California to Canada for a few weeks.
W: That’s exciting. My husband and I took a car trip from New York to Canada a few years ago. It was a lot of fun.
    6.B    7.C
W: Ken, I heard you went to a baseball game during your trip to Chicago.
M: Yeah, my son and I saw the Cubs game last Saturday. They beat L. A. 5-3.
W: Didn’t it rain really hard on Saturday? I thought the game was put off.
M: No. Maybe you’re thinking of Sunday. The game didn’t go on because of the rain.
W: Oh, that’s right! It just looked like it was going to rain. . .
M: Yeah, it was a bit cloudy on Saturday but it didn’t rain.
    8.C    9.B    10.C
W: Martin, we really must decide where we want to go this summer. I’ve always wanted to visit France. Why don’t we drive through France the first week and then, down, into Italy for the second?
M: That’s a great idea. When we get to the bottom of Italy we could go on the ferry to one of the Greek islands.
W: But if we stay in the north of Italy, we could drive into Switzerland and see that for our third week.
M: OK. Let’s go up into Switzerland and then we could drive back into Italy and continue driving down to southern Italy where we could catch the ferry to one of the Greek islands for our fourth week. I’d love to go to Rhodes.
W: Then from Rhodes, how about getting another ferry and spending our fifth week in Turkey? From there we could drive back up through ex-Yugoslavia, into France and then into England.
M: Before coming back into England there are Germany and Austria, too. But I don’t think we can see all these places in six weeks, can we?
W: No, not really. So let’s spend our last week on the west coast of England, driving around Cornwall.
    M: It all sounds wonderful.

Hello, this is Lisa with a special GMA Channel 7 weather report. People of Manila, it’s Friday afternoon. The worst storm in many years has just hit the southern island of the Philippines. Besides powerful wind and lots of rain, it has already caused the ground to break apart, sending huge amounts of dirt and rocks down the hills. These events have caused the most damage. A lot of homes are buried, and many people are missing. If you live in an unsafe area, please leave your home immediately! Rising water is also expected after the storm has passed. Do not drive or walk through a pool of water today! It could be unexpectedly deep. The storm will probably be less violent by Sunday evening. But many parts of the south will still be dangerous through the next week. If you know someone is missing or needs help, please call 6328342. The government has set up this phone number for tips to help them rescue people.

    读后续写:【参考范文】
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater. I told myself I should never give up. Then I pulled the weed again with great efforts. The weed finally broke. I swam back to the surface to take a deep breath. I saw two young men in the canoes, racing each other. I was exhausted and shouted for help. The two men saw me and raced towards me. By the time they reached me, I had been already unconscious.
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I realized that I was in the hospital. Jimmy and Bobby told me the two young men brought me to the shore and sent me to the hospital. After a few minutes, my parents with half angry and half worried faces walked in. My parents scolded me for running out of the house secretly but were also glad that I was not seriously injured. I will never forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I ever want to show off again.
