My grandfather died more than twenty-five years ago. I was fifteen then. He was kind, strong, fair, and very funny. When I was a young musician, he was my biggest fan. I played my violin for him when he visited, and he loved everything, but each time he had one request. “Could you play Amazing Grace?” he asked, full of hope and with a twinkle in his eye, because he knew my answer was always, “I don’t know that one!” We went through this routine at every major holiday, and I always figured I’d have time to learn it for him later.
About the time I entered high school and started guitar, Grandpa got cancer. The last time I saw him alive was Thanksgiving weekend in 1985. My mom warned us that Grandpa didn’t look the same anymore and that we should prepare ourselves. For a moment I didn’t recognize him. He looked so small among all the white sheets. We had all gathered in Ohio for the holiday, and I’m sure we all knew we were there to say good-bye. I can see now that Grandpa held on long enough to see us each one more time. I remember how we ate in the dining room and laughed and talked while Grandpa rested in his hospital bed. I wonder if it was sad for him to be alone with our voices and laughter. Knowing Grandpa, he was probably content.
The next morning, I found my moment alone with him. I pulled out my guitar, tuned to his appreciative gaze, and finally played for him Amazing Grace. I had worked on it for weeks, knowing it never mattered whether I actually played it well and choosing not to believe as I played that it was my last concert for my biggest fan. The cancer had stolen his smile, but I saw joy in his eyes. He held my hand afterward, and I knew I had done something important.
I argued with people all through college about my music major. I was told by strangers that music wouldn’t make me any money and it wasn’t useful like being a doctor. But I know first-hand that with music I was able to give my grandpa something at a point when no one else could.

26.When the author finally played Amazing Grace for Grandpa, she ______.
A.made him smile joyfully
B.knew she must play it well

A.The author was 15 when she wrote the article.
B.The author has a great affection for her grandfather.
C.The author prefers to be a doctor rather than a musician.

The idea of biting into a hamburger made from insets may take a little getting used to. But even if the thought of eating insects turns your stomach now, they could and should form an important part of our diet.
“Insects are a rally important missing piece of the food system,” says Peter Alexander, a senior researcher in food security at the University of Edinburgh. “They are undoubtedly a superfood - a whole lot of nutrition in a really small package.” Because of this, farmed insects could help deal with two of the world's biggest problems at once: food insecurity and the climate change.
Agriculture is the biggest driver of global biodiversity loss and a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (排放). Raising animals accounts for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Insect farming uses a small part of the land, energy and water required for traditional farming, and has a significantly lower carbon footprint.
Then there's the fact that insects are 12 to 25 times more productive at changing their food into protein (蛋白质) than animals. They need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep and two times less than pigs. One of the main reasons is that insects are cold-blooded and therefore waste less energy keeping their body heat.
As well as saving energy, insects can live off food that would otherwise be thrown away, contributing to the recycling industry. Insects can be fed agricultural waste. To complete the recycling chain, their excrement can be used to make crops grow fast and large and improve soil.
“At the end of the day, you might have the healthiest, most nutritional, and most sustainable(可持续的) product, but unless it tastes nice so that people are willing to accept it, it may be a lot more difficult to get that across,” says Peter.
32.What could be an immediate benefit of farmed insects?
A.Reducing traditional farming. B.Helping fight climate change.
C.Getting rid of food insecurity. D.Improving global biodiversity.
33.Why can insects produce more protein?
A.They eat food with high protein. B.They have a special type of blood.
C.They digest food better than animals. D.They require less energy to stay warm.
34.What does the underlined word “excrement” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Waste. B.Food.
C.Meat. D.Nutrition.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.A Solution to World Food Insecurity
B.What to Do to Solve Climate Change
C.Why We Should Quit Animal Raising
D.An Overlooked Protein-Rich Superfood

The Last Easter Egg
My mom and I were in Florida during my mom’s spring holiday from teaching middle school. As an anxious four-year-old, I had asked my mom several times if the Easter Bunny would be able to find us. She promised me there would be eggs.
On Easter morning, my mom and I discovered that the Easter Bunny had left eggs on the hotel’s main lawn(草地) for all the kids. As we walked toward the group of adults and kids waiting for instructions, I found all of the kids were much bigger than me in the competition. It wasn’t looking good. The hotel staff member in charge of the hunt explained the rules. My heart began racing as I watched some of the other kids get into a pose to start.
When the staff member yelled “GO!”, all kids raced across the lawn, running from tree to tree looking for the plastic Easter eggs filled with candy. I dashed to the closest tree but did not find any eggs. I ran to a nearby sandpit(沙坑) hoping there would be an egg hidden there. But there wasn’t. I looked across the lawn and saw the other kids holding up their plastic eggs and knew my chance of finding even one egg was becoming smaller by the second.
Just then my mom pointed out a palm tree across the lawn. “Look! There’s One!”A shiny blue plastic egg was resting against the base of the tree. I looked up at my mom in excitement. However, she was staring in the direction of another mom, whose son was pulling candy out of an egg. The two moms were looking at one another and then at what appeared to be the last Easter egg. I had never seen my very petite(娇小的) mom before that day. She had been born with weak knees, due to an issue with her legs, and when she was in primary school she had worn special shoes to correct a foot problem.

M: Catherine, we know lots of people are trying to lose weight. Why is it so hard for people to do? Is it just a lack of willpower?
W: Not exactly. I have a lot of customers who, when I first met them, were eating almost nothing or eating in what they thought was a healthy way but with little or no results. In fact, when food appears to be very low in fat, it often has a lot of sugar so it’s really important to check the sugar content.
M: I often hear people talking about skipping breakfast. They only have two meals a day. Is this a good way to lose weight?
W: Of course not. Having a good breakfast takes you through until lunch. Generally, you won’t eat too much for lunch if you have breakfast.
M: So three meals a day is best?
W: Well, five meals is the best. And have a variety of healthy foods. Of course, it’s better to eat more fruit, vegetables and grains.
M: Then how do we avoid overeating?
W: One of the best ways is to use a smaller plate or a smaller bowl. Also, drink more water before you eat. You should avoid eating quickly too. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the message that you’re full.

21.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“If you are aged 18 or under on 18 November 2019, attend a school in the UK or are home educated in the UK and love reading, then you should enter The Guardian’s young critics competition”可知,满18岁或18岁以下,或者在英国上学或在英国接受家庭教育的人可以参加这次比赛。故选B项。
22.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Make sure your review reaches us by 30 October 2019.”可知,截止日期是2019年10月30日。故选A项。
23.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中的“up to 30 students from the winning school will have the chance to edit and print the day’s news”可知,来自获奖学校的30名学生将有机会编辑和打印当天的新闻。故选C项。

25.推理判断题,由第二段最后一句“I remember how we ate in the dining room and laughed and talked while Grandpa rested in his hospital bed. I wonder if it was sad for him to be alone with our voices and laughter. Knowing Grandpa, he was probably content. (“你会弹《奇异恩典》吗?”他满怀希望地问道,眼睛里闪着光,因为他知道我的回答总是:“我不会弹这首歌!”每逢重大节日,我们都会这样做,我总觉得以后有时间为他学习。)”,第三段第一句“The next morning, I found my moment alone with him. I pulled out my guitar, tuned to his appreciative gaze, and finally played for him Amazing Grace. (第二天早上,我找到了和他独处的时刻。我拿出吉他,对着他赞赏的目光,终于为他弹奏了《奇异恩典》。)”,以及最后一段“I was told by strangers that music wouldn’t make me any money and it wasn’t useful like being a doctor. But I know first-hand that with music I was able to give my grandpa something at a point when no one else could.(陌生人告诉我,音乐不会让我赚钱,也没有像当医生那么有用。但我亲身体会到,在别人做不到的时候,我可以通过音乐给爷爷一些东西。)”可知,作者很爱她的爷爷。故选B项。

Dear John,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are a few suggestions. First, it helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible.
Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.
Try and write me in Chinese next time.
Best wishes
Li Hua
67.
As they stood there staring at each other, I started running toward the Easter egg. And then my mom rushed past me-running in her Easter dress toward the palm tree and the shiny blue egg. “ Go, Mom!” I shouted. The other mom also dashed toward the shiny blue egg. In one last burst of speed, my mother reached the trunk of the tree, bent down, and grabbed the egg. “Wow! I got an egg!” I screamed in excitement, jumping up and down in celebration.
My mom walked back to me with the Easter egg of her victory. She handed me the shiny blue egg. I held it up joyfully, like the other kids had done. I felt myself the luckiest guy in the world. I’ve forgotten what kind of candy was inside that plastic egg and what I did with that egg after our vacation ended. But I clearly remember my mom running as fast as she could toward that shiny blue egg. And I’ll always remember the big smile on her face-a reflection of her love.
