Adventure seeker Emma broke her ankle when she fell awkwardly while climbing a rock and spent a week in hospital waiting for an operation on her foot. When she was sent home to recover under strict instructions not to bear any weight, she became so fearful of a walking stick that she didn’t move for three weeks. “I tried a walking stick, but I kept falling over and injuring myself. So I literally just stayed on the sofa all day,” says Emma.
She was gutted at the thought of missing the Wolf Run—a quarterly (季度的) event that she hasn’t missed since
2014. “If you complete four Wolf Runs in a year, one in each season, you can get Alpha Wolf status,” explains Emma. “This year is going to be my fifth in a row as an Alpha Wolf and I am really upset that I lose my status.” So she was willing to try anything to get through the course—even with her injured ankle.
“I was telling my friend that I was going to cancel, but he persuaded me to give it a go. Having something to aim for really kept me going.” Emma completed the run wearing an iWALK2.0, which is a medically-approved device and it basically functions like a hi-tech artificial leg, allowing users to walk freely. “I decided to get one and it completely changed my recovery. I could move around the house and start getting out and about again, which had a real impact on my mental well-being.”
On the day of the race, Emma was nervous but the sound of people cheering her on kept her motivated. Emma made it over the finish line in just under six hours and clocked up (达到) her 23rd Wolf Run in six years. “It was an incredible day and my determination to finish combined with the support I received along the way kept me going,” says Emma.
    4. Why was Emma frightened. to use a walking stick?
    A. Because she was afraid of recovering slowly.
    B. Because she was warned not to move around

    7. Which of the following best describes Emma?

Witnessed by organizers, sports figures, performers and students, the flame for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games—housed in a red lantern—drew crowds of onlookers as it was escorted (护送) by volunteers into the ceremony held at Beijing’s Olympic Tower. The flame arrived early on Wednesday, October 20 after being flown from Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, where it was lit two days earlier.
The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20. Games events are scheduled in three zones-downtown Beijing, the capital’s northwest Yanging district and co-host Zhangjiakou in Hebei province.
As an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games, the torch relay plays a significant role in promoting the host’s international image while spreading the message of peace, solidarity, friendship and health. Due to the pandemic, however, games organizers have cut back the traditional torch relay to a small-scale event. The relay will take place in three host areas and involve about 1, 200 torchbearers (火炬手). The shortened torch relay with reduced crowds will help ensure the health and safety of all participants as well as those of local communities.
The relay is scheduled for Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, with the route connecting landmarks, historical sites and major tourism attractions in Beijing and Zhangjiakou. The traditional offline event will make sure that people get to feel the warmth of the flame and get inspired by the Olympic spirit up close. An online version of the torch relay making use of virtual reality (VR) technologies is also planned for social media platforms. Although the length and duration of the torch relay has been reduced, this represents an innovative approach to maximizing the benefits of the technology in connecting more people in an interactive way.
The designs of the torch, lantern and cauldron (主火炬) echo each other within a consistent concept that strikes a strong impression of dynamism and vitality. The lantern, which will be used for the flame exhibition tour, is based on the Changxin Palace Lamp, a bronze oil lamp from the Western Han Dynasty, while the cauldron features the same red and silver colors and cloud pattern as the torch. Drawing inspiration from the main cauldron (大锅) for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, the torch for the Beijing 2022 Games is called the “flying ribbon”.
    8. How was the flame sent to the welcoming ceremony in Beijing?
    A. On a tower. B. In a red lantern.
    C. By a sports figure. D. Through VR technologies.
    9. What is the third paragraph mainly about!
    A. The preparation work has been adapted to the pandemic situation.
    B. The Olympic Games help promote the host’s international image.
    C. The torch relay is an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games.
    D. Games organizers must ensure the health and safety of all participants.
    10. Why are VR technologies used in the torch relay?
    A. To welcome more athletes to the relay.
    B. To attract people to the tourism attractions.
    C. To connect more people in an interactive way.
    D. To make people feel the warmth of the flame close.
    11. What do we know about the 2022 Winter Olympic Games?
    A. It is scheduled from Feb. 2 to Feb. 4.
    B. Zhangjiakou will co-host the games events.
    C. The torch relay will avoid historical sites in Beijing.
    D. The designers of the torch are inspired by flying ribbon.

Ask a man in the street what education is for, and an immediate response might be “for equipping young people with the skills to get a job”. Well, yes, but is education not about a lot more than that?
Indeed, I would argue that it is because our British education holds a higher ideal—equipping young people with self-confidence and an understanding of the world around them—that it is booming internationally.
Yet I believe that what makes our education great is being threatened by the ever-increasing focus on teaching to the test. The focus has arisen because only by testing children can we know what progress they have made. It’s a dilemma since the curriculum changes that are taking effect were designed to widen young people’s knowledge of the world around them.
But please do not misunderstand me. I am not suggesting that tests should be withdrawn. I am saying that schools need to have the confidence to aim much higher and wider than teaching to the test. They should put a rich learning experience for students first; the test should be used to examine learning, not an end in itself.
Teachers count. A good many subject teachers know their departments have been short-changing their students, but they lack the self-confidence and support to move away from teaching to the test. So, what is the secret to getting back on track? What good schools have known all along is that a staffroom full of teachers with a good knowledge of what they are teaching, together with a passion and skill for communicating it, lies at the heart of the best education. Teachers’ insistence on putting their love of subjects first will produce more engaged (参与) students. With more engaged students, they often come better examination results, greater self-confidence and so on.
Schools should also find the self-confidence to put a focus on inspiring teachers who are keen to broaden what they teach. In this way, I believe educational achievement will improve.
    12. Which belongs to the purpose of education according to the author?
    A. Helping young people to have a job.
    B. Preparing students for all kinds of tests.
    C. Enabling young people to succeed in life.
    D. Making young people behave confidently.
    13. What does the author think of tests at present?
    A. Formal and competitive.
    B. Necessary but imperfect.
    C. Standard but worthless.
    D. Important and functional.
    14. What should teachers do to face the challenge according to the author?
    A. Arrange interesting classes to students’ taste.
    B. Train students according to new teaching standards.
    C. Encourage students to express their love for subjects.
    D. Feel confident to care about more than examinations.
    15. What is a suitable title for the text?
    A. What Is the Future of British Education?
    B. What Is the True Purpose of British Education?
    C. Schools Must Aim Higher than Teaching to the Test
    D. Schools Should Withdraw Tests for the Sake of Students

He was in extremely low spirits when he thought of the low likelihood of recovering it.
While at home preparing for tomorrow’s lessons, he heard some knocks on the front door. Pulling open the door, he saw a man in rags standing before him, his right hand grasping a wallet. And Kong saw that although he was trembling because of the cold weather, there was a charming smile on his face. “You must be Mr. Kong,” the unidentified man said with sparkling eyes, adding that he found his wallet at Walmart. Hearing this, Godzilla couldn’t contain/hold back his excitement, amazed by the stranger’s willingness to personally deliver his wallet to his home. “Wow! This is unbelievable! You are so ... sweet!” Godzilla responded with emotions. Then the man asked Godzilla to check out the wallet and make sure everything was inside.
With a brief inspection and a beating heart, Godzilla found all the stuff was stationed inside safe and sound. “Hey, brother! Thanks a ... million for returning ... my wallet! You are my ... guardian,” Godzilla said in a choking voice, tears rolling down his cheeks. “It’s no big deal. I just did what others would have done in my position,” the ragged man replied, ready to leave. The referee blowing his whistle, the match began. All the players outdid themselves to excel(奋勇争先)on the court. The scores leading alternately(比分交替领先), the atmosphere was electric. With cheerleaders and basketball fans enthusiastically cheering around, players were fiercely competing for the championship. Finally, The Class 3 won the final by a narrow margin (以微弱优势). The activity turned out to be a huge success, which was highly thought of by all of the teachers and students. Not only did it provide a platform for us to relieve/release our pressure and add spice to our dull routine, but it also strengthened our cohesion(凝聚力)and friendship.

Paragraph1: Inside the house Godzilla knew his name was Ultraman. After chatting a lot with Ultraman, he knew that, although he lived from hand to mouth by picking up and selling plastic bottles in the neighborhood, he never lost hope for the future. What was amazing was that Ultraman saved every penny to extend a helping hand to those who were struggling with life. Godzilla watched with awe the man, short in stature/build but high in character/virtue. He was baptized in thought and touched in soul. Pulling out some money from the wallet, Godzilla offered it to this virtuous man, but he declined/turned down the reward in a polite way. With Ultraman leaving, Godzilla was impressed with his honesty and friendliness. His conscience drove him to pay the virtue forward.
Paragraph2: Godzilla shared the story to social media, and it became popular. Overnight, Ultraman became a household name and was greeted with countless compliments(赞美) for his kindness and honesty. Such a big stir did it cause that many netizens gave thumb-ups, with some willing to donate some money. Several newspapers vied(竞相) to interview him, which put him under the spotlight. Then with the joint efforts of several sides, a charity organization, named after Ultraman, was established to ease /alleviate the poor life of the financially disadvantaged. Such praiseworthy virtue/positive energy should be passed on from one person to another. As the old saying goes, one good turn deserves another(好人有好报).
