Across the world, places are increasing their efforts to recycle and help the environment. Recycling is when rubbish is reused and not thrown away. In recent history, more and more cities and countries have started recycling. These places have developed their recycling programs to stop our Earth from being covered with rubbish and black, dirty air.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States, recycling also helps save energy. The agency advocates (提倡) the recycling of glass and plastic bottles, paper, and aluminum cans. Many European countries have strong recycling programs as well. Austria, Germany, and Norway are well known for being leaders in recycling, and South Korea and Wales are countries that have a lot of recycling as well.
There are many reasons why some countries recycle more than others. The fact is that these government support recycling, and they are aware of its importance. There is also a lot of money spent on recycling. However, it is also necessary for people to try hard to recycle what they can from their own homes.
Other ways to fight the waste problems also exist. Many cities place recycling bins on their streets. There are recycling projects across some cities --and in these projects, companies advertise the need to recycle. This helps keep the city streets clean.
Electric cars are another way to keep the environment clean. The motors of these cars are electric. They get their power from electricity and batteries rather than from oil or gas.
The hope is that finally all cities in all countries will recycle and make our Earth a cleaner place. We must protect nature and never stop thinking about how to protect it. So think before you throw away something that can be recycled!

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people though loneliness can last for years. Now scientists say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular (特定的) situation --for example,a family problems the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problem, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most serious. Unlike the second type, chronic loneliness(慢性孤独) usually lasts more than two years and has no specific (具体的) cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unluckily, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists (心理学家) agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contact,e. g. friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on different kinds of people for different reasons. For example, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons:they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. Though temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal , healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

    A. Lonely people don't have many friends.
    B. One problem of loneliness is a person's social contacts.
    C. Chronic loneliness often lasts about two years and has a particular cause.
    D. Moving to a new place must cause you to feel lonely and have headaches.
( )61. Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people?

    B. Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness.
    C. Chronic loneliness may cause family problems.

I had to make a safe place to live. I could not stay where I was because there was no fresh water there. I found a good piece of flat ground up a hill, with a cliff on one side and a good view of the sea. I put up my tent near the cliff. I cut some wood and made a strong fence around the area. The fence did not have a gate or door. I used a ladder to get over it to reach my tent and then pulled the ladder inside the fence. Nobody else could come in. I was safe. I brought all my things inside the fence. It took a long time to do this, sometimes in heavy rain.
I made a kind of cave in the cliff behind me and I put a lot of things there to keep them dry.During one storm,I was afraid that lightning would hit my gunpowder, and I would lose it all. After the storm,I divided the gunpowder into small piles and put them in different places. Every day,I went out with my gun to shoot something that I could cook and eat. I found that there were goats on the island, and I soon shot one.
Every day,I made a mark on a piece of wood with an axe. This way,I knew how long I had been on the island. I had some paper and ink from the ship, and I made notes about my new life. It was terrible, lonely life, but at least I was alive. And I had saved many useful things from the ship, which would help to keep me alive.
I found a tree that had very hard wood to make a spade so that I could dig. This helped me to make my cave bigger.
I made a table and a chair. They were very difficult to make and took a long time. However,I did not worry about time because I had nothing else to do except to feed myself and stay alive.Sometimes,I climbed up the hill to see if there might be a ship, but I never saw one. I also continued to write my diaries until I had no more ink.
I was busy for months. I made my fence stronger. I shot birds and goats. I saved one goat, and it became a pet. I had thrown some old pieces of corn on the ground beside a rock, and I was surprised some time later to see it grow. I could not understand this at first because I had forgotten about the corn I had thrown there. There was also some rice. When it grew up,I saved the seed and planted it again. Still, in my first year,I decided to not eat the crops. I planned to save them until I had enough seed and crops. This would not be until my fourth year on the island.

Nick is 50 years old. He is a policeman, and he is very brave. But he used to be very afraid of the dark. Now let me tell you something interesting about him. One day when he woke up in the middle of the night, he saw something white in the garden. He was too frightened to go out. So he took his gun and shot. The next morning, Nick went out and found one of his white shirts hanging on the clothes line in the garden. But it had a hole right through the middle of it. Nick laughed and laughed. He knew it was his white shirt that frightened him last night.
    听第二篇短文,回答第16--20小题。短文读两遍。
You are listening to Radio South. Here is some information about a pop concert. The group Red River will come to London soon. They will be in London from the twenty-eighth of October to the second of November. Tickets are really dear --they cost thirty pounds each, but half of that money will go to a children ’s hospital. To book a ticket, telephone two-eight-three, double 0-six-five between ten a. m. and five p. m. The London concert will be in the South Bank Hall. It’s very easy to find. The best way to get there is to take the train, and it takes 40 minutes. The concert hall is in Trinity Street. That’s T-R-I-N-I-T-Y Street. See you there.

The Spring Festival is a traditional holiday in China. It is always in January or February.
Family members get together to celebrate it. During the Spring Festival, people often watch lion dances, visit houses and let off fireworks.
The Spring Festival is an important time to go back home to visit relatives and friends. In China, there is a saying that a year’s plan starts with spring. Therefore, this festival is great to make wishes for a new year.
In my opinion, the Spring Festival is a part of Chinese traditional culture. I love it and I want to spread it to the whole world.
