Whether you’re travelling to the islands or the mountains of Thailand, you’re likely to spend at least one night in its capital city on the way. Bangkok might be noisy and polluted but it’s also an exciting city with plenty of things to see and do. Why not make it a longer stay?
Where to stay
The Khao San Road was a famous traveller spot even before Leonardo di Caprio’s character in the film The Beach stayed there. But it’s noisy, not very pretty and not very Thai. For something more authentic, Phra Kanong offers an alterative place to stay, with its fantastic street markets where everyday Bangkok people eat, work and live. It’s not as convenient for the main tourist sites, but it has a Skytrain station so you can be at the Grand Palace in 20 minutes.
How to get around
Bangkok’s traffic can be a nightmare. Sure, you can easily take a taxi-if you want to spend hours stuck in traffic jams-but there are two much better ways to get around the city. To explore the temples and historical sites, catch an express boat river taxi or a longtail boat along the Chao Phraya river and the canals. For the modern part of the city, the Skytrain is a fast, cheap way to travel from the river to the shopping malls and nightlife of Sukhumvit.
Where to eat
The simple answer is: everywhere! Thai street food is among the best in the world, and for around $5 you can eat a filling and delicious meal. Some food stands have little plastic seats where you can sit and eat and they cook the same dish over and over, like fried chicken on rice or Pad Thai noodles.
What to do
After you’ve seen the main sites like the Giant Buddha at the temple of Wat Pho and the spectacular Grand Palace, and shopped at Chatuchak market, check out the snake farm and watch the live snake show. You can even touch a snake yourself if you want to!
1. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Many famous films were shot on the Khao San Road.
B There are fantastic street markets on the Khao San Road.
C. Tourists can experience local people’s life in Phra Kanong.
D. It’s convenient to get to the main tourist sites from Phra Kanong.
2. If you want to explore the modern part of Bangkok, which transport is the best choice?
A. The taxi. B. The skytrain. C. The longtail boat. D. The express boat river taxi.
3. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A textbook. B. A book review. C. A research report. D. A travel guide

I grew up in a poor household and fought my way from bars in South Africa into offices here in Canada. My parents were teachers with modest salaries, but we could hardly make ends meet because of my dad’s addiction to alcohol. My mom tried her best to love us and keep us fed.
At about 4 years old, I saw a smiling piggy bank at a flea market, which was sitting on a table among all kinds of second-band goods. Child as I was, somehow I had the thought that it was going to make things better and that’s why I had to have it. Then for two years, I saved everything from my birthday money from my granny to leftover coins at the bar.
However, we smashed the piggy bank in the middle of a winter when our electricity had just been cut off again and the cupboard didn’t have any food left. My mom didn’t tell me to do it, but I volunteered. Even at roughly 6 years old, I had a strong sense of duty toward my family. It had enough money to put gas in the car and buy groceries, plus some candles for light.
It changed my life because it changed my attitude towards life. I suddenly believed my situation was temporary and that I was able to face any challenge and make my life better.
As an adult, I had a long-term dream of leaving South Africa. So in spring 2020, I packed up everything I could and moved to Canada. I worked my way up to be a senior salesman here, applying the skills of frugality(节俭)and persistence that my piggy taught me. I am proud to say that I am fighting for what I love and looking forward to whatever is next.

根据文章第一段“My parents were teachers with modest salaries, but we could hardly make ends meet because of my dad’s addiction to alcohol.(我的父母是教师,薪水不高,但由于父亲嗜酒成瘾,我们几乎无法维持生计。)”
根据划线单词下文“Even at roughly 6 years old, I had a strong sense of duty toward my family. It had enough money to put gas in the car and buy groceries, plus some candles for light.(甚至在大约6岁的时候,我就对我的家庭有强烈的责任感。它有足够的钱给汽车加油,买杂货,再加上一些照明的蜡烛。)”可知,储蓄罐里的钱使家里的生活暂时维持了下去,所以划线单词的意思和“打碎、取出”有关。选项A“sold (卖)”;选项B“broke (打破)”;选项C“bought (买)”;选项D“hid (藏)”。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Even at roughly 6 years old, I had a strong sense of duty toward my family. (甚至在大约6岁的时候,我就对我的家庭有强烈的责任感。)”可知,作者是个有责任感的人;再根据最后一段“As an adult, I had a long-term dream of leaving South Africa. So in spring 2020, I packed up everything I could and moved to Canada. I worked my way up to be a senior salesman here, applying the skills of frugality(节俭)and persistence that my piggy taught me.

If you have access to the sea or a coastline, you can help researchers monitor the world’s oceans during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.
More than 1, 000 people have already joined the eOceans platform, which aims to help researchers gather data on oceans and ocean ecosystems in real-time. You can take part by downioading the eOceans app on your smartphone and logging. The app lets you note your observations as well as upload photos. This information is then linked to your geographical location and is made accessible to scientists studying that region.
Covid-19 restrictions on travel in many countries have made it more difficult for researchers to access and study coastlines, says Christine Ward-Paige, founder and lead scientist at eOceans. “Wben Covid-19 hit and the world went into varying levels of lockdown, we could understand what was happening in the atmosphere or on land,” says Ward-Paige. “But we had no idea what was happening in the ocean.”
Using eOceans data, researchers such as Ward-Paige can remotely monitor how oceans and coastal communities worldwide are faring, including in the context of the pandemic. She and others hope to obtain more data on wildlife spotted along coastlines.
Observations recorded through eOceans are already providing valuable insights. During Australia’s lockdown, for example, the largest swarm of turtles in the country’s history was spotted by researchers using eOceans data.
And in Hawaii, data from the app suggests that a reduction in tourists during the pandemic is associated with clearer waters.
Negative impacts of the pandemic on the ocean have also been picked up through the app, including an increase in pollution from personal protective equipment, as well as pandemic-related interruptions to the recovery of marine systems following a 2019 oil spill in Brazil’s waters. In future, data from eOceans could help enable early discovery of hazards (危害), such as oil spills, so that they can be dealt with sooner, says Ward-Paige.
She hopes this real-time monitoring will help accelerate discoveries, enabling researchers to keep pace with the rapid changes in the world’s oceans.
8. What do you need to help monitor the world’s oceans?
①access to a coastline ②your personal information
③a digital camera for taking photos ④a smartphone with the eOceans app downloaded
A. ①③ B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④
9. Why was eOceans established?
A. To strengthen the Covid-19 restrictions on travel.
B. To offer an easier and quicker way to contact ocean researchers.
C. To enable the public to monitor the progress of ocean protections.
D. To help researchers get real-time data on oceans during the Covid-19 epidemic.
10. Examples of Australia and Hawaii are quoted to show ________.
A. negative impacts of the pandemic on the wildlife
B. the influence of human activities on the environment
C. the effective use of eOceans data during the pandemic
D the measures taken by different countries to protect the ocean
11. What is Ward-Paige’s attitude to the future of eOceans platform?
A. Optimistic. B. Worried. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
B 9. D 10. C 11. A

Mutant(突变的) strains of a common flu virus which occurs only in humans before have been found in dogs for the first time, prompting concerns that such virus could start to spread easily among pets—and potentially evolve into dangerous new strains that transmit among its primary hosts. Nanjing Agricultural University virologist Shuo Su and his colleagues identified two dogs in southern China with different mutant strains of the influenza C virus, which infects almost all humans—mostly as children—and usually causes mild illness.
The researchers genetically sequenced these strains and found that mutations affected their structure near the part that attaches to a host’s cells. These changes mean “it might be on the way to reproduce better in dogs,” says a biochemist Michael Veit. People sometimes pass flu viruses to a pet dog, where the infection typically stops. But the newly found strains’ particular mutations suggest that the result differs from what it seems to be, he adds.
Although most adults have already been exposed to influenza C, the researchers say we might have little immunity against a new strain that jumps back to humans after mutating in animals. For a letter published in the Journal of Infection, the scientists state it shows that viruses should be tracked more thoroughly in dogs and other pets through regular testing and sequencing. Cornell University animal virologist Colin Parrish, says he would “certainly advocate” for that. “We have sort of ignored dogs and cats as potential hosts,” he says, “but my research group routinely surveys dogs for new respiratory(呼吸的)viruses”.
It is too early to say whether dog-borne influenza C will become a problem. More studies are needed to confirm the virus is spreading among these animals and, if so, how easily. But the researchers say it and other viruses should be monitored carefully to stop any disease strains from emerging. A good place to start would be Kennels and similar places where viruses can easily spread and evolve. “If you are farming animals at high density,” says University of Nottingham virologist Janet Daly, “that’s where you need to look.”
12. What worries people in recent days?
A. The virus spreads among pets. B. The virus jumps back to humans.
C. The virus results in serious disease. D. The virus transmits from humans to pets.
13. What is the finding of the research in the second paragraph?
A. Host’s cells will be affected by the virus.
B. Dogs prevent the virus from reproducing itself.
C. They are more likely to transmit from dogs to dogs.
D. The flu virus disappears after people pass it to pets.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Viruses tend to spread and evolve among dense groupings of animals.
B. The virus won’t emerge as long as it is often monitored by researchers.
C. The influenza C is a big problem to both animals and human beings.
D. It is easy to stop viruses from spreading among animals in a good place.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Mutant strains of a virus are identified in dogs.
B. Mutant strains of a virus are detected in an experiment.
C. Mutant strains of a virus are more common at high density.
D. Mutant strains of a virus reproducing in dogs may threaten humans.
A 13. C 14. A 15. D

The Sunday scaries refer to an over-whelming feeling of fear and anxiety about going to work or school the next day. ____16____ But even though the Sunday scaries are common, they are manageable. Here’s how experts say you can ease your end-of-weekend anxiety.
Structure your Sunday.
Structure can be a best friend when feeling the Sunday scaries. Instead of sitting on the couch and watching the clock, go to do something that you enjoy. You might still get a sense of fear. ____17____ Thus, you should anticipate the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and address items from a to-do list that get neglected during the workweek.
Don’t forget to relax.
When structuring your Sunday, try not to stuff in large quantities of business and chores. ____18____ Whatever feels like a helpful distraction to revive yourself can be adopted, maybe a body meditation, maybe a midafternoon bath, maybe an engaging show.
____19____
Anxiety is a normal human experience, and one of the main ways to manage it is to find out your personal triggers. So you need to pinpoint what’s really causing you to fear the week—Is it a deadline? meeting? Or presentation? Also, it is necessary to create multiple to-do lists, which can help put into perspective what’s important and what you can let go of for now. By doing all of these, you can decrease the anticipation of the stress and fear of the upcoming week.
Create some excitement for the week ahead.
Getting rid of the Sunday scaries isn’t just about minimizing the doom and gloom of the week ahead, either.
Having something to look forward to gives you something to think about what’s pleasing, rather than just noticing the fear you feel. It’s a form of reframing your thoughts: Instead of focusing on the awful things you expect from the week, build excitement over a coffee or lunch date with a friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with. ____20____ .
A. Reduce your sense of anxiety.
B. Identify your anxiety sources.
C. It is vital to make space for activities to relieve yourself.
D. It is being experienced physically and mentally by most people.
E. This can help decrease the feeling of stress and fear of the week
F. This gives you the opportunity to shift your mindset and will improve your mood.
G. But that feeling is harder to hold on to when you are really engaged in something that make you feel good.
D 17. G 18. C 19. B 20. E

选项B“Identify your anxiety sources.
根据空前内容“Having something to look forward to gives you something to think about what’s pleasing, rather than just noticing the fear you feel. It’s a form of reframing your thoughts: Instead of focusing on the awful things you expect from the week, build excitement over a coffee or lunch date with a friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with. (有了一些期待,你就会有一些东西去思考什么是令人愉快的,而不是仅仅注意到你所感受到的恐惧。这是一种重塑思维的方式:不要把注意力集中在一周中你期待的糟糕事情上,而是和你一直想见的朋友喝杯咖啡或共进午餐,让自己兴奋起来。)”可知,上文主要介绍的是把自己一周的期待放在美好的事情上,而不是糟糕的事情上。选项E“This can help decrease the feeling of stress and fear of the week (这可以帮助减少压力和恐惧的感觉)”是上文内容的延续,指的是如果你期待的是未来一周美好的事情,而不是糟糕的事情,那么你就不会那么焦虑。故选E。

Robin, an outgoing but thin boy, is so keen on archery(射箭)that he will practice in woods every weekend.
Having strived for the higher standards, he is skilled in archery.
One morning, Robin arose early and stood near a window, looking at a forest in the distance. Misty clouds were rising from the forest, and sunlight through them was shining on the trees. The bushes and maple trees were becoming red, gold and orange, confirming that autumn had already arrived. It was a fine autumn day, clear and mild. He could see birds leaping from branch to branch, and it seemed that he could hear them lively singing. Robin was cheerful and decided to go out to practice his archery and have a picnic in the forest. He told his mother his plan and prepared for his little trip. A few minutes later, it was time for Robin to set off. He picked up his quiver(箭袋)of arrows, and his mother gave him a picnic wrapped in a cloth. “There’s a freshly roasted chicken,” she told him. “And a big pie for dessert. Enjoy your time practicing archery!”
Robin left his cottage and hiked down the path towards the forest. On the way to the forest, he passed a big apple tree. Apples in the tree were ripe and looked so big and bright red that he wanted to have a taste. Then, Robin took aim at an apple and shot it down with ease. “Yummy!” Eating the sweet apple, he continued to move forward and made up his mind to practise more.
When he entered the woods, two shabby kids jumped out suddenly and held him up. Robin stopped, slightly looking up at them: one is taller, the other one is stronger! “What’s in that bag, skinny monkey?” asked the taller boy, who wore a red tunic (短袍). The stronger boy had blond hair that hadn’t been cut or combed for a long time, glaring at Robin, “Is it food? Give us your lunch-or there will be trouble!” he threatened. Robin was nervous but quickly calmed down.

Paragraph 2:
As Robin looked at the boys’ disappointed eyes, a good idea occurred to him.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“I will give you all my food if either of you can defeat me in an archery competition! ” Robin replied. The two boys exchanged a quick glance, then nodded in agreement. Robin set up a target in a nearby clearing and handed each of them a bow and arrow. The taller boy went first, but his shot missed the target by a wide margin. The stronger boy fared slightly better, but still fell short of the target. It was Robin’s turn now. He took aim with precision and let the arrow fly. It hit the bullseye with a satisfying thump. The boys were impressed but still hungry.
As Robin looked at the boys’ disappointed eyes, a good idea occurred to him. “I’ll tell you what,” he said. “I’ll teach you both how to shoot properly, and we can share the food together.” The boys hesitated for a moment, then nodded in agreement. Robin spent the afternoon showing them the proper stance and technique. They all shot arrows into the target and had a great time. As the sun began to set, they sat down together and shared the picnic that Robin’s mother had prepared. They talked and laughed, and the boys told Robin about their difficult lives. By the end of the day, they had become good friends.
