The Most Innovative Libraries Around the World
Some libraries use unique architecture to encourage visitors to explore the bookshelves and settle down with a new book, or use mobile libraries to bring books to hard-to-reach populations. No matter how they achieve it these novel libraries are keeping the magic of reading alive.
Biblioteca Vasconcelos (Mexico)
It is a huge library with towering floors. The inside of the library is more like a massive storage facility than a library. The outside is surrounded by almost acres of lush gardens devoted to plants unique to Mexico.
Beach Library (Bulgaria)
Reading a book on the beach is a classic practice, and in Bulgaria, one library encourages tourists to do just that. The white, weather-resistant shelves lined up not far from the sea feature 6,000 books in 15 languages, so every visitor can enjoy perfect beach read while bathed in the sun’s rays.
Bishan Library (Singapore)
Built in 2006, this library, with glass pods of varying colors, creates a cozy atmosphere for reading throughout the building. At the same time, a more open-plan children’s room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from going upward and disturbing those concentrating on their books.
Seikei University Library (Japan)
Libraries are usually known for their quiet atmosphere, but this one encourages conversation. Pritzker Prize-winner Shigeru Ban designed the library with soundproofed walls to respect those who need uninterrupted study, while also encourage other methods of learning like study groups and lively discussions.

On Thursdays, Charles Dandino becomes the conductor of an unusual kind of train. He leads what he calls a “ bike train, ” a group of cycling co-workers who band together for their 6-mile ride to work in the name of safety, as well as for fun and exercise.
After rising for several years, the percentage of commuters (通勤者) turning to bikes declined for the third year straight. In some cities, the decline was far more serious. In Tampa, Florida, and Cleveland, cycling to work dropped by at least 50 percent.
Experts offered several explanations for the nationwide decrease. Most obviously, lower gas prices and a stronger economy contributed to strong auto sales and less interest in cheaper alternatives, such as mass transit and bikes. The rise of ride-hailing services (叫车服务) such as Uber and electric scooters cut into bike commuting.
Around the country, city transportation officials wish there were more bicyclists like Dondino as they seek to cut traffic jams, promote health and identify alternatives to cars. Federal highway spending on bike and pedestrian-related improvements totaled $915.8 million this year. City officials tried to support bike commuters. Besides new bike lanes and trails, many cities added bike sharing programs, which allow cyclists to rent a bike to ride point-to-point or for the day.
For bike commuters, safety is a top consideration. It was one of the reasons that Dandino created his bicycle train. “ Riding bikes in a group is more thrilling and a joy to do, ” said Dandino. “ On the safety side, it makes us much more visible, and there’s strength in numbers. ”
Barbara Insua also rides regularly with Dandino’s bike train. She said she loved getting a workout on the way to her job. “ Uphill to work. Downhill home, ” she said. “ There are so many wonderful things about biking. ”
4. What was Charles Dandino’s main purpose to create the “ bike train ” ?
A. To protect the environment. B. To reduce gas consuming.
C. To guarantee cyclists’ safety. D. To support the officials.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Reasons for decline of cycling. B. Contributions of a stronger economy.
C. Methods of being bike friendly. D. Explanations for lower gas prices.
6. How do city transport officials support bike commuting?
A. By cutting traffic jams. B. By promoting alternative cars.
C. By building bike lanes. D. By improving public transport.
7. Why does the author mention Barbara Insua?
A. To clarify a novel concept. B. To provide more evidence.
C. To show a different opinion. D. To offer background information.

Despite being located in a bustling urban part of Huanggang in Hubei, Xiao Yaqin’s apartment block stands out because of its green appearance resulting from being wrapped in green plants. “ It makes me feel very comfortable. When you open the window, fresh air keeps rolling in, ” the 65-year-old said excitedly.
He was one of the first group of residents that recently moved into China’s first “ vertical (垂直的) forest ” residential project, consisting of two 80-meter-tall, 25-story buildings.
The project is the result of cooperation between Easyhome and Italian architect Stefano Boering, often called “ the father of the vertical forest ” . There are 404 trees and 4,620 shrubs (灌木丛) in the vertical forest, which is classified as the “ fourth generation ” of housing. Grasses, flowers and climbing plants cover 2,408m2 of the floor area. The plants are estimated to be capable of absorbing 22 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year, while generating 11 tons of oxygen.
However, its development hasn’t been met without doubt. For example, mosquito infestations (感染) are one of the reasons why people are reluctant to move in. The irrigation system required to ensure the survival of the plants in the vertical forest and the need to have gardeners cut the branches mean much higher maintenance costs than in regular buildings.
It is not yet known what the future of fourth-generation housing will be in China, but it has at least brought urban residents a new life experience. Xiao, the retiree, said his new apartment has met his expectations for better quality of life. “ You feel you are close to nature, even if you don’t open the window, ” he said.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By presenting Xiao Yaqin’s example. B. By describing features of the apartment.
C. By imagining Xiao Yaqin’s life. D. By showing the apartment’s popularity.
9. What can we learn about the “ vertical forest ” ?
A. Easyhome designed and built the project.
B. Its plants produce 22 metric tons of oxygen.
C. It faces problems of mosquitoes and high costs.
D. The residents have to look after the plants.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the fourth-generation housing?
A. Critical. B. Concerned. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To predict the future way of living. B. To introduce a new type of housing.
C. To discuss problems facing residents. D. To advertise the vertical forest project.
D
Life is noisier than ever before — there are louder and more TVs, speaker, and electronic device notifications in public spaces and open-plan offices. Across Europe, about 450 million people live with noise levels that are dangerous to health. All this has serious effects on our mental health, our physical health, and our ability to generate creative work.
We define “ noise ” as all the unwanted sound and mental stimulation (刺激) that interferes with our ability to make sense of the world and our ability to act upon our intentions. In this sense, noise is more than a nuisance. It’s a primary barrier to being able to identify and carry out solutions to the challenges we face as individuals, organizations, and even whole societies.
So, how can we build cultures that honor the importance of silence? At some organizations, it’s “no email Fridays” or “no meeting Wednesdays.” At others, it’s removing the expectation of being available on electronic devices during weekends or after 5 pm. For some workplaces, a redesign of the work space might help specific kinds of workers get the focus that they need. One solution might be permitting uninterrupted periods of time during the workday. Another might be giving up on the open floor plan and moving the whole office to a new building.
Across our society today, norms of noisiness run deep. In most office cultures, workers are required to stay connected all the time and they have to remain competitive. In many organizations, it’s common to interrupt workers who are absorbed in their work. All these lead to more noises. But there are simple strategies we can employ in order to find our own personal shelters and to slightly change broader cultures. By reclaiming silence in the workplace, we can create the conditions for reducing burnout and improving creative problem solving. Even in an increasingly noisy world, we can be quiet together.
12. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 2 man?
A. Difficulty. B. Shock. C. Disappointment. D. Annoyance.
13. What is probably a good way to help create cultures of quiet time?
A. Not sending email on workdays. B. Being available for work on Sundays.
C. Not interrupting workers for some time. D. Designing larger offices for workers.
14. Why is it difficult to build a culture of quiet time?
A. Demands of constant connectivity exist. B. Various office cultures are developing.
C. Workers’ attention is always well valued. D. Personal space is often highly desired.
15. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Noise kills B. Let’s be quiet
C. A noisy culture D. Why to be quiet?

Looking back on my application process I summarize the things that helped me when applying to Harvard. So continue reading for my top tips!
1. Be yourself.
I followed many “dos and don’ts” at first. However, once I started writing more authentically about myself, I was able to write a better essay. In fact, every part of the application is an opportunity for you to paint a picture for the admissions committee. What matters to you? What do you like to study? What motivates you? What kind of student are you? What responsibilities would you take on in college? ____16____
2. Start early.
____17____ At this time, you have multiple tasks to handle and completing each application requirement will take time. For example, securing a good recommendation letter will be easier if you ask your teachers a month before they are due than if you ask them a few days before a deadline. You must also request transcripts, edit and revise your essays, and keep attending and doing well in your classes! How can you accomplish so many tasks? ____18____
3. ____19____
While you won’t be able to review some elements of your application, like your letters of recommendation, you should sill reflect on what you think your teachers will highlight about you. ____20____ For example, in your personal statement, you might have highlighted one of your life experiences that has shaped you greatly. Is your transcript missing an academic passion that has been significant to you? Where else can you share it? Mapping these experiences and strengths onto different parts of your application is a good strategy, because it helps maximize the often limited word counts of your application.
A. Make a map.
B. Select your experiences.
C. This is especially important during your senior year!
D. So see the application as a chance to show who you are.
E. Therefore provide impressive materials to convince them.
F I suggest setting concrete goals to accomplish every week.
G. Similarly, think about what you’ll say in each part of your application.

As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, Renae’s grandmother surprised her with an adorable gray puppy named Chloe. From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. Every ounce of love Renae gave, the little dog returned tenfold. “She was such a sweet dog,” Renae says. “She’d lick your face forever if you didn’t stop her.”
But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job and he’d be working at home, so the house needed to be completely quiet. Chloe barked a lot so they had no choice to give it up to a humane society. Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure.
In time, Renae got married, and had a child of her own. But her family didn’t feel quite complete. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She decided that she would adopt a puppy, and then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe — she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided: She would adopt this older dog.
注意:
