Despite coming from a wealthy family, Adam and Cody were kind and helpful. Everybody intown knew their parents, but they preferred to keep a low profile(低调).
One day, Adam and Cody sat on a bench in a park. They held up a sign that read, “Please help.” They also set up a table with some items which they had put on sale. A homeless man usually sat on the bench they were on, but he was nowhere to be found. People gathered around them to see what happened.
A woman went up to them and asked, “Are you two okay? Why are you out here asking for help?”Adam admitted that they were there to help their friend who was currently in hospital.
Concerned, she secretly took a photo of them and sent it to their father, Peter. When he received the picture, he immediately left his meeting to pick up his children. However, when he arrived at the park, he was shocked by what he saw. Dozens of people had lined up to put money in a box and purchase items from the two teenagers.
He approached them immediately. “Adam, Cody, what is going on here?” he asked.
Cody was frightened, but he answered, “Sorry, Dad. We didn’t want you to see this, but we had to do what we could. A few weeks ago, we were walking home from school when we saw a homeless man named Carl sitting on this exact bench. We want to help him.”
“We have been bringing him tea and sandwiches every day, and he’s been so grateful. We’ve also been spending a couple of minutes with him every day exchanging stories. He is such a kind man, Dad. Yesterday, we had food to bring him but he was not on the bench. We walked to the abandoned shack(简陋的小屋)he lives in, and found he was so ill.” he explained.

As flying through the blue sky, 5,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, 23-year-old pilot Mary heard the sound — a subtle change in the noise as the engines began to operate hard.
Her co-pilot, 26-year-old Thomas, heard it, too. They were just two young pilots, taking a short trip with no passengers. Then, without warning, the pilots lost power to the engines.
The next few minutes were in disorder. Nothing worked. At about 1,000 feet above the ocean the plane fell quickly, Mary made the last emergency call for help. “We’re 25 miles northwest of Kona,” she said to air traffic control. “We’re going down.”
Mary held the controls tightly. She knew the chances of survival were slim. “Just land as if you`re landing on the ground,” Mary told herself. As the plane rushed toward the ocean, she forced herself to imagine a runway (飞机跑道) spreading along the water.
Thomas and Mary were thrown forward violently. Thomas opened his eyes to wait for death. He realized that he was, unbelievably, OK. Mary was next to him, shocked and bleeding, but still conscious. She rose to her feet hard and felt the blood pouring down her face. “Get out!” Thomas shouted loudly. The water was knee-high inside the plane, and it would be flooded in moments.
Mary made every effort through the water toward the door, picking up two life jackets along the way. By the time she’d climbed out onto the wing, the water was covering the seats of the plane. As the plane sank, they jumped into the ocean. Within seconds, the plane disappeared from the surface.
The waves broke around them. Thomas and Mary had done the impossible by surviving a crash landing into the ocean. Mary, however, was frightened and started to cry. Thomas tried to calm her by making small talk.
“When will the rescuers get here?” Mary asked.
“They’re coming,” Thomas said.” We’re just going to be here.”

The clock read 11 p.m. and I was still in the lab but I couldn’t focus. But going home wasn’t an option. My adviser had required me and the rest of my lab mates to stay in the lab until she had time to read all of our reports. She had decided she wanted to meet early with each of us to discuss the single-paragraph descriptions of our work. We waited dutifully as each lab member took their turn. None of us dared to leave or to challenge our boss. I didn’t get home until 1:30 a.m.
It was one more reminder that I should have been more careful when selecting a graduate adviser. Unfortunately, I was foolish enough not to give the directing style a second thought. I was simply happy to have received an offer.
Part of the problem was that I had limited options. I moved to the United States with my husband, who had a good job in a particular city. It had only one university, with only one department that really interested me. So I started to volunteer in a research lab there.
I was a regular attendee at departmental discussion groups, and that was where I met my future adviser. After she presented a meeting, I approached her and we set up a time to chat. We had a productive discussion about her research. Later, I went to dinner with her lab group.
I didn’t pick up any signs of trouble, although one person who worked in a lab that shared space with hers did tell me about coming across one of her lab members crying in the break room. I ignored that warning sign. Within a few weeks, the staff member offered me a position in her lab as a master’s student. The opportunity seemed too good to pass up. I hoped it would work out.
It wasn’t long before reality set in. Group meetings were terrible. Our adviser was often angry.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So, when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day, my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

As I became less anxious, I began to search online for how to care for my plant.

    Blue Eyes
My family and I often feed the homeless in our community. It actually feels more like spending time with friends. We hug them, give them something to eat and drink, and sit and talk with them.
We hadn’t been doing this too long when we met a tall, thin gentleman I refer to as Blue Eyes. His blond hair was turning gray, and his eyes were as bright and blue as the summer sky.Blue Eyes smiled a lot.He knew that what he was doing on the streets was wrong. His addictions had taken hold of him, and he couldn’t pull away, though he never failed to let us know how thankful he was for us.
Blue Eyes was a business owner once, married to a beautiful woman. But his wife got sick, and he used all his money for her treatment. When she died, not only did Blue Eyes lose the love of his life, but he was also out of money. Then his beloved dog passed away.During all that heartache Blue Eyes turned to drugs and alcohol to numb his pain.He lost his home, and he ended up on the streets.
On one Sunday afternoon, one of the guys he shared the streets with advised us that Blue Eyes was sick and needed help getting a prescription (处方) filled. When we mentioned this to Blue Eyes, he put down his head, ashamed to make it seem that he had to ask for help.
We learned that he had cancer and various other illnesses. His prescription would cost sixty dollars—an amount that he didn’t have.We assured him that we would get it filled for him.
Walking away from him that day I wondered what we had just done. As much as we loved spending time with our homeless friends, the amount of money we were spending on the food and snack bags made our budget tight. But sixty dollars extra for a prescription? I didn’t see how we were going to pull that off. Something told me to just have faith, though.

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A few years ago someone gave us a robot cleaner as a gift. We already had a lady who cleaned our house regularly and I didn’t really see us using this new machine, so it just sat in its box for quite some time.
One family in our neighborhood were moving away the next week to a new house and I thought of asking the mother whether this robot cleaner might be something she could use. And it turned out that she eagerly replied YES! Her new place had hardwood floors and her daughter was asking if they could get a robot cleaner but she said they would have to wait and see…and now they didn’t have to buy one!
I couldn’t tell you how overjoyed I was to see the daughter’s cheerful looks when she came over to get it. And she was even more excited about the flower seeds I gave her from our backyard. I hoped they would plant the seeds in their new home so that they would always have a piece of our circle with them. She was really touched. She also told me how moved they were when they saw a big pink heart on the front wall of our house while they were having their going-away party. I told her I wouldn’t wash it off even after they moved. I liked being reminded of how our hearts were connected to everyone.
The nice thing was that the daughter would still be working in our town, and I told her that if she ever needed to stay over instead of driving 45 minutes to the new house, our home would be always here for her. Soon after, a snowstorm hit our area and blocked all the roads.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, Mr. Rose, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son when his morning lessons were over, he might relax himself for an hour as he pleased.
There was a river nearby. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to make a living. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son will never learn to read or write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles paid a visit to the hut of this fisherman one day and found the little boy, whose name was Joe, sitting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures. Little Joe said he was trying to write but he knew only two words, which he saw from a sign. Joe wished to learn and write so that he could be the happiest boy in the world. Charles promised to fulfill his dream by teaching him, even though he is still a boy too. Charles also said if Joe tried his best, he would know how to read and write soon. Both Joe and his mother thanked Charles and told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.

    A Son’s Love
Our church congregation(教会)in Toronto has a way of helping those who have financial difficulties without making the receiver feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then given to those members without them knowing the name of the giver. In this way, many struggling families managed to get through the tough days.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We went bankrupt because of business failure. The whole world seemed to fall down. However, we did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only fact our children knew was that we had to cut back on many things. We hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve, though our eldest son, Jim, was working in his spare time to get some small earnings for college tuition(学费).
Time went by. Our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I finally knew that we would have to look for outside help. We tried every possible means, but no one seemed to work. Just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. We were overjoyed to receive a good amount of money, enough to bring us through that difficult time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and much grateful. Everything was changing for the better gradually and Jim was luckily admitted into a good university.

At a restaurant in scenic Augsburg, Germany, waiter Paul Blachut was busy at work. It was a warm Sunday afternoon in May 2021 and many people had come for relaxation at this pretty place beside the Lech river.
From behind the bar, Paul, 24, had a good view of the river; there were stone steps that stretched some 20 meters down from the restaurant to the riverbank. He could see that, along the S-shaped shore, people were picnicking and children were playing. Many were cooling their feet in the river. The melt water from the Alps meant the water was very cold at that time of year, and it flowed quickly.
Among those enjoying the cooling water were a mother and her two teenage daughters. They were standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable tube(充气船)when, suddenly, the girls lost their footing and were caught in the river’s current.
It all happened so fast. The girls desperately grabbed on to the tube, which their mother was sitting in, pulling her into the river, too. Then all three were being carried away by the current.
A bystander raced up the steps to the restaurant, and Paul looked up from his work when he heard the shout: “I think three people are drowning in the Lech!”
Paul could only see a tube moving up and down in the river. Then he spotted the three women a short distance away, waving their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. Paul’s mind raced. Why wasn’t anyone helping them? Frightened, he saw that one of the them kept sinking.
Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his cell phone, wallet and keys from his pockets and pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumped into the river. He didn’t care about the cold; all he could think about was saving the women. It was obvious that they were helpless.

Most of the fire accidents happen because of our carelessness. Every year there are many fire accidents, resulting in a great loss of property and life. Many of these can be easily avoided if we are more careful and observe certain rules regarding fire-protection. There have been some unforgettable accidents in my life. One has left me a shocking impression.
It was 9 am on Sunday. I was busy in doing my homework at home and my mother was preparing tea for me in the kitchen when suddenly there were shouts, cries and a lot of confusing noise coming from outside. Immediately, I rushed out to figure out what was all that. I was informed that a supermarket warehouse (仓库) in our neighborhood had caught fire.
Wanting to help put out the fire, I ran to the place. A big crowd of neighbors had collected as well. Some were helping throw water and some were trying to beat the fire with sticks. Although all the people struggled to help, before long, the fire, driven by the strong winds, swallowed the whole building. Before the owner, the employers and all the neighbors could to anything more, huge and high columns of smoke and flames spread fast. Seeing things were almost out of control, someone called firefighters at once. With all the belongings inside burning in the fire, the owner could do nothing except cry, helpless and heartbroken.
It was a horrible scene which I could never forget. Without powerful equipment, we could just wait for firefighters’ coming.
During the waiting for fire rescue, many began talking about how the fire broke out and who was to blame for the accident. Were the members of the supermarket themselves or the others responsible for the accident? When people continued chatting about the possible causes of the fire, the fire-engines soon arrived at the scene.

If I dropped out of my program, I’d not only be out of a job, but I’d also lose my student visa status. So I stuck it out and waited for the right moment to jump ship. I realized that the adviser was not suitable for me. She was not the one to lead me to success.
A year later, I finally had the opportunity to change my adviser with a different lab. This time, I was careful not to repeat the mistakes I had made in the past. I met another adviser whose research interested me. When I visited his lab, I paid attention to how he got along with others, and I spoke with people who worked with him, especially asking about his directing style. I was amazed how friendly everyone was. His students had great respect for him, and I immediately sensed that his lab was an environment where I could succeed.

4.Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness. I increased my plant watering, and then decreased it. Still, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. The thought that I couldn’t even care for a simple plant started to haunt me like a shadow. For the past few months, a bond had been built between me and the plant. I couldn’t shake the feeling that if the plant died, I might too. Having seen through my heart and sensed my fear, my wife comforted me, “Honey, your treatment is working well and maybe the plant just needs its.” Her words did make sense and settled my nerves.
As I became less anxious, I began to search online for how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving its roots more room to grow and buried some solid plant nutrient under the top layer of the earth. Soon, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the tree with its shinny and lush leaves in its new pot, I make it a point to appreciate my wife and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will inspire my wife to live her life to the fullest.

We went to the pharmacy (药店) and dropped off the prescription to be filled. Because we were aware of the addictions among the population we were dealing with, we made sure to discuss the situation with the pharmacist, who confirmed that the medicine was legal and not associated with any type of street drug. Then he confirmed the sixty-dollar price. We left with the confidence that everything would workout. We didn’t know how or when.
The very next day, walking into work, I saw an envelope on the ground. It was folded in half and looked as though it had been stepped on a dozen times. I kicked it aside, but then I felt guilty for not picking it up, so I turned around and went back to throw it in the garbage. As I picked it up, I decided to open it. I felt my legs go a bit numb, and I had to lean against the wall when I saw what was inside. There was only one thing in that envelope—a $100 bill.

Therefore, I invited her to live with us so she could get to and from work more easily. She accepted my invitation with pleasure. I prepared a room for her. That evening I cooked a delicious meal and held a welcome party for her. She also brought me a lot of gifts, including chocolate, cakes and so on. So we lived happily together.
The next spring, the family invited me to their new house. I was happy to accept their invitation. The moment I got there, they greeted me with a warm welcome. The mother said they were very grateful for the robot cleaner I had given them, adding that it worked very well. Then the daughter eagerly showed me around their garden. I was surprised to find it full of flowers, which were a feast to the eyes. She proudly told me that they planted all the seeds I had given her. These flowers really showed that we were connected.

7.One day, a gentleman told Mr. Rose he often saw Charles go to the river. Feeling frustrated and believing his son must give up studying and be doing something secretly with somebody else, he burst into anger and decided to teach his son a lesson. But after a second thought Mr. Rose decided to calm down and follow his son and figure out what he was doing all these days. When he appeared before the two boys, they felt nervous. But when he saw the two boys were learning how to read, he got into a surprise, followed by Mr. Rose’s remark: “I am sorry son, I narrowly missed a major mistakes.” After a few minutes’ chatting, Mr. Rose made up a decision to help Joe with his reading and writing.

8.It was then that we discovered Jim’s bank account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. From the time he was nine years old, he had been a paper carrier. We had trusted him to put part of his wages into the bank towards his education and he worked rather hard for these small savings. “Where is the money?” I asked him repeatedly. He just hummed and hawed, which made me even angrier. I would not let the matter alone. I needed a reasonable explanation. There was an atmosphere of tension in the room.
After what seemed like a century, Jim finally broke the tense silence. In tears, and with great reluctance, my son murmured, “I put the money in that offering box for you.” Everything came out in the wash. I stood there speechless, tears filling my eyes. It had taken him years to save that money but he had given it to us willingly—without telling us what he had done. I gave him a big hug and it was at the moment that I sensed the warmth and love of my son.

    9.One possible version:
As Paul got closer, he could tell that the mother seemed to be in the most trouble. Her head was then below the surface of the water. She was drowning. He recalled a movie in which a lifeguard grabbed a drowning victim, pulling the person ashore while swimming on his back. Paul tried this, but the woman’s clothing made her so heavy; he kept being dragged under, too. He needed a new plan. Then he dived under the drowning woman, pushing her upward and finally toward the shore. He couldn’t recall if it had taken three, four or five pushes, but at some point, an onlooker was able to get close enough to grab the woman’s hand, pulling her to the shore.
Paul knew he needed to rescue the two daughters further down the river. He dived into the current again, swam quickly downstream, held of one and pushed her successfully toward the shore in the same way he had done her mother. Looking back to the river, he could see someone was helping the girl’s sister-which was a good thing because the teenager in front of him was unconscious. As Paul gently lay her down, a bystander with medical training came forward and attended to her. Thankfully, it was not long before she was conscious again. Several onlookers expressed their admiration for Paul, but he was modest about his role although he felt happy. Indeed, it was a job very well done.

Without any delay, the firemen hurried for fighting the fire. They did their best to control the fire, pumping a lot of water to aim at the flames. It took them quite a while to finally put out the fire. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. However, the goods stored in the warehouse laid totally in ruins, and the supermarket would suffer huge financial losses. With all rescue work over, two policemen came to the site and talked with the members of the supermarket for a while.
The policemen set about looking into the cause of the fire. They checked the remains of the burned goods, interviewed some witnesses and viewed the cameras nearby. Soon they found one of the employees should be to blame for the accident. The fact was uncovered that the accident happened due to the man’s throwing cigarette carelessly. He would face a severe punishment. That day, I learned a significant lesson that one must avoid carelessness since it can harm both others and oneself.
