The Toy Tree
It was a bare tree with thin branches which looked like they might snap (折断) at any moment, but it was the only tree in the estate gardens. In spring, the tree cheered up the grey concrete with its blossom. And, in summer, its shade comforted the restless heat.
Gabe loved the tree. He and his friends played by it all the time. The tree’s blessing for the community, but not for Mr. Snider, the caretaker, who hated the tree. When he had to mow (割) the grass around it or sweep its blossoms or fallen leaves from the path, he would grumble (咕哝), “It’s in my way.” or “Who has to clean up all this mess? Me, that’s who!”
Sometimes he threatened to cut it down. One morning before the coming New Year, Gabe spotted him walked towards the tree with a chainsaw (电锯). He shouted, “Mum! What’s Mr. Snider doing?” Mum put down her knitting needles — she was knitting everyone scarves and came over to the window. Gabe grabbed her hand and ran down two flights of stairs to the garden. Soon they were standing between Mr. Snider and the tree.
“Out of my way,” said the caretaker. “Time for this eyesore (眼中钉) to go.”
“This eyesore is of great public interest.” Mum tried to sound important.
“And we love this tree,” begged Gabe.
“Not a good enough reason.” Mr. Snider was getting his chainsaw ready.
Gabe desperately tried to think of more reasons to keep the tree, then he remembered the toy tree he’d seen in town. It had colourful gift tags (礼品签) on it and written on every tag was the name of a toy a child had wished for. Mum had explained to him that if someone took a tag and bought the gift on it, the charity would send it to a child who might not get New Year presents.

Flora and her dad were going to move to a new house. Friday, a truck would come for the furniture. Then the next week, workers would dig up the yard. Where Flora and Papi had grown flowers, the workers would put in a parking lot.
“Our poor flowers,” Flora sighed to herself, looking at the bright purple blooms and soft and green weed coming out of the soil. She sat outside, selling things she didn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hung a sign that said “Yard Sale”. Her yard sale was the first one of the year on Apple Street, and several of her neighbors had come over to have a look.
Papi came out. He held a dish piled high with nuts. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he said. Flora’s dad loved sharing things. Most of all he loved sharing jokes. He smiled when he saw Flora’s sign and winked (眨眼) at the customers gathered around.
“Yard sale? What are you selling yards of? Or meters of?” he asked. “Ribbons? Carpet? Cloth? Where’s your ruler?”
“Not that kind of yard,” joked Mrs. Ciro. “It must be this nice grassy yard we’re standing on that’s for sale.”
“How much for the weed by your sign?” asked Mr. Johnson, joking.
Flora gave no response. She didn’t think their jokes were funny. She felt extremely in low spirits at the thought that the lovely yard was already sold, and soon their poor flowers and weed would be ruined.” Deader than a doorknob,’ Papi’s papi would say”, she thought to herself bitterly, “What’s worse, the new house doesn’t have any flowers at all.”
With a sigh, Flora dug her heels deep into the grass. But when she felt the soft earth move under her heels, she knew what she could do.
She whispered her clever plan to Papi. He nodded, smiling, and sat down in her seat instead.

Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “ You see I am here for the lamb, ” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother’s side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie! ” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours! ” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated (咩咩叫) very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Please tell your boy to stop a moment, ” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

Flying now has become a necessary routine these days, what once seemed to be a marvel that changed how we travel and what distances we can cover in a matter of hours. Our family shared this mood when we were boarding our flight early Thursday morning.
My mother, elder brother and I planned to fly to Hawaii and spent a few sunny days there. We took our seats in rear emergency isle of the Airbus A321 plane, while people on board were busy packing their belongings and getting ready for the flight. Soon after taking off, there was a troubling sound in the plane. People in the front seats started screaming and someone shouted “birds! birds!”. The plane began rocking from side to side in an unusual pattern. I saw one of the flight attendants terrified, while restrained, the expression on face who sat in the same emergency isle as we did. My mother grabbed my hand and my brother became stiff and unresponsive. It was unusual to see so many people being scared and confused at once, everybody looking around in search of what might be going on. A moment later I felt a strong smell of something burning, and apparently somebody even started to cough. People at the front rows screamed that they see fire coming out of the left engine.
Suddenly, the chaos in the cabin was interrupted by the captain informing the passengers that a flock of birds collided with the plane during the take-off. Apparently, the damage was severe and the plane would not be able to turn around and land at the airport. My mother grabbed my hand and reached for brother’s hand as well. A deep sense of fear and realization of a potential disaster descended on everyone on board. Flight attendants rushed to check if everyone was still buckled up and in a proper position.

Lotus was a little girl who lived by a big lake with her grandpa. One morning, Lotus went to collect reeds (芦苇) for Grandpa. She stopped in wonder when she saw a big bird as white as fresh snow, standing in the marsh grass. A crane! Lotus had heard many stories about the endangered cranes from Grandpa, but she had never seen one.
BLAM! A loud gunshot shocked her. Lotus turned around and saw a man aiming his gun straight at the bird! Lotus quickly bent down and hit her metal bucket with her reed cutter, making a noise like thunder. The hunter fled, dropping his hat and never looking back.
Lotus hurriedly pushed across the wetland toward the bird. When the crane spotted her, it tried to run but fell down instead. Lotus gathered up the heavy bird. Hold on, please, she begged silently. She went home to Grandpa who had rescued other animals before.
Carefully, Grandpa wrapped the bird’s wound. “He’s lost a lot of blood, but he will survive,” he said. Lotus trusted Grandpa, but still she was worried. The crane barely moved and didn’t open his eyes, not even when Grandpa fed him rice soup. Lotus placed the bird into the soft nest she had made for him and gently patted him, just like Grandpa used to do when she was sick.
Luckily on the third day, the crane lifted his head for the first time and looked straight at her. Hesitantly, Lotus put her small fingers on his head. The bird stretched his neck, and rubbed her cheek gently. Lotus’s heart pounded, and tears welled up in her eyes.
“Feather” was the name Lotus chose for her new friend. When she helped wash his wound, Feather stared at her. When she whistled with her reed, Feather rubbed her cheek with his head.
One day, slowly and cautiously, Feather took his first step. Lotus jumped and swirled(打旋) and hugged Grandpa blissfully. Soon Feather was following Lotus everywhere, even all the way to school. The other kids clapped and cheered as Feather danced to the reed whistle. They all joined in, dancing in a circle.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
People use the proverb “seeing is believing” to describe situations where it’s hard to believe something is possible if you haven’t seen it happen. I am here today to tell you that the proverb is true and to share with you how a girl and her grandmother made a positive transformation in a community.
It was a year ago when I was studying life cycles in my science class. I wrote a paper about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) and received a perfect score. I was so thrilled; I called my grandmother Nana and told her the exciting news. My talk recalled memories from Nana’s childhood. “I remember when I was a girl,” she said, “those orange and black butterflies were a common sight. Come late summer, there would suddenly be hundreds of them, and before long there were so many it felt like you were standing in an orange cloud.”
“It sounds like you witnessed a migration (迁徙), but what happened to them?” I asked. “To be honest, I’ve never known,” Nana admitted. “But there do seem to be fewer monarchs around the neighborhood.” Nana and I decided to investigate.
That weekend, we met at the public library. Our research produced plenty of information: some fascinating and some concerning. Apparently, the number of monarchs has been in decline for the last several decades. Housing developments have destroyed much of their habitat (栖息地). Some information was hopeful, though, like how conservationists are working to save them.
The best was this — it doesn’t take lots of money or equipment to do so. It takes only a little bit of land, some seeds, and dedicated people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation (驿站).
“What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?” I suggested. “We’ll need people to help.” Nana responded immediately and didn’t waste time to get started.

Little Tom lived with his poor grandmother Donna in a village. Every day, Tom sold potatoes grown by Donna in a market.
One day, an old foreigner aroused Tom’s curiosity. He frequently visited Tom’s stall (摊位) but didn’t buy. The next day, the man passed from one vendor (小贩) to the next, waving a bag around. But he didn’t visit Tom’s stall that day. Out of curiosity, Tom asked a vendor nearby to temporarily look after his stall. Then, he followed the foreigner.
The man went back to his broken-down house near the market and took several old medals from his bag. “Wow!” Tom said. “I won them in my own country,” the man said proudly, then asking why Tom came here. Tom explained, “I’m wondering why you didn’t visit my stall today.” “Oh, I don’t need potatoes. I need firewood, so I walked around the market looking for someone who would buy these medals and give me money in exchange,” he lied.
Tom left and brought back many potatoes from his stall, saying, “If you don’t have money, you can’t buy food. Keep my grandma’s potatoes.” But the man insisted he had enough food. Tom went back, upset; he could see the man was hungry and weak.
The third day, the man reached the market, selling medals again. He valued them, which were his honors. But after a disaster, now he had to sell them to survive. He looked weaker. Tom packed some potatoes, walking towards him again. From his conversations with vendors, Tom found him trying to sell medals for food! But no one believed his medals were true.
Disappointed, the man sat alone by the roadside. Tom approached him, saying, “I saw it! Why didn’t you let me help you?” Almost crying, he said, “I’m sorry, but I was too embarrassed to ask for your help. Now could you give me your potatoes in exchange for the medals?”

I failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.
We are a family with the spirit of exploration. We often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn’t go the distance. Each time I urged my family, “Go on without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I’ll be fine just sitting here taking in the view.” I lied. Sick of being left behind, I decided that it would never happen again. As a teenager, surely, there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.
But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in shape if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Be-sides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was excited and ready to go. I bought the proper equipment and clothing, checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!

Coming Clean
Derek and Janey were eating in the hall and talking about the jacket of Mr. Such, who was their teacher.
“They’re so crumpled and baggy, ” Derek said. “ Like a pair of old dish-cloths. ”
“He wears them all the time ! I really wish he’d get some new ones, ” Janey sighed.
At that moment Mr. Such himself came into the hall. Today he was in a brand new suit, which was white and spotless. Everyone in the hall stopped eating and stared at him in amazement.
“Wow! ” said Derek, leaning across his plate. “ Mr. Such, you look so different today! I like your suit! ”
Thank you, Derek. It’s for Parents’ meeting. ” said Mr. Such, a bit red in the face.
“But that’s not till Monday, Mr. Such, ” Janey said.
I know that, Janey. I’m just getting used to it. ”
The last lesson of the day was art. In case his new jacket got dirty, before his teaching. Mr. Such took it off and hang it on the cupboard door. However, probably because he hadn’t got used to the new jacket, he forgot to take it back with him. All the students left except Derek and Janey, who were still busy with their painting. Derek mixed up too much green paints and got his hand very dirty. He reached behind him and rubbed his hands on the towel on the cupboard door. Except that it wasn’t the towel.
“ Oh, ” he said quietly. “ What have I done! ” Turing around, he found he had wiped his hands on Mr. Such’s new jacket! Janey wanted to help, so she quickly grabbed some paper and rubbed at the green marks. “ Oh no! ” Derek cried in agony, “ You’re making them worse. They’re twice as big now. ”
Janey felt sorry and thought hard, and finally she came up with an idea. “ He was still in the office, so we still have time. There’s only one thing for it now, ” she said with determination and pointed to the sink outside the classroom. Desperate as Derek was, he took some soaps and fetched the jacket secretly to the sink with Janey.

My ex-husband had made some very bad choices in his life, and I did not want my children to pay for them all their lives, so the boys and I talked and we decided to move. We moved 2,700 miles from home. We had a small car that pulled a small U-haul over the Rocky Mountains. I could barely read a map (my 8-year-old reads them great, I learned).
We arrived in our new town three days later, and found an apartment. I started the boys in their new school and went to our new home to unload the U-haul. I had brought all the clothes, dishes, blankets and toys that I could fit in the U-haul. As I began unloading, a lady whom I had briefly met the day before was driving down the road and she stopped to help me unload and carry everything up the three flights of stairs. After getting moved in, I was blessed two days later when I found a job.
Things were going great. The boys went to the Boys & Girls Club after school, and I would pick them up after work. In December, two months after moving, the manager of the Boys & Girls Club called me and said that there was a group of people who wanted to choose a family for Christmas and would I mind if they chose our family. My first thought was no, because we had all the love we needed for the holidays, but then he said that my children had told him that there was no furniture in the house, and this group had a lot of used furniture, and that the boys and I would be making them very happy. So I agreed.
They called me and asked what the boys wanted for Christmas and I told them that anything would be appreciated, and I told them what their favorite toys were.

1.Possible version:
Gabe said, “it is going to be a toy tree.” He explained that they were going to decorate it and put tags on it so they can buy presents for children who need them. Then he flashed a look for help at his mum.“Yes,”Mum said enthusiastically, "Mr Snider, we’re decorating it this weekend." Mr. Snider looked suspicious. He almost turned purple trying to think up an argument, but he was beaten. He lowered his chainsaw and stormed off. That evening, Gabe and his mum put up posters to let everyone know about the toy tree, and they contacted the charity to get tags.
By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived. The whole community came to decorate the tree. They sang as they hung tags, and it felt like a party. The bare tree soon looked dazzling. Everyone went home, beamingly, with a tag from the toy tree. As Gabe stepped back to admire everyone’s handiwork, he spotted Mr Snider looking out of his window with a frown. Gabe waved at him. “We leave one tag for you!” With hesitation, Mr. Snider let out a sigh, then walked to the toy tree and took it down. At that moment, the tree was not an eyesore any more.

The word left the children standing stunned. Then, looking up at him, one asked seriously, “Sir, do you really mean that?” The butcher just replied seriously, “ I mean every word of it. 4.参考答案
The captain addressed us once again telling that an emergency landing will be in a few minutes and that they will try to land on the field. We were asked to protect the head. The attendants shouted “brace! brace! brace!” as the plane flew lower and lower over the green carpets of picturesque fields. A terrible force pushed all of us up front, ripping the air out of lungs while seat belts bit hardly. The plane trembled and rocked as dashed through the field. And there was a moment of silence when the plane finally came to a full stop. Immediately the captain ordered to evacuate the plane. Once we slid down the evacuation slide we found ourselves amid the corn filed. Flight attendants rushed us away from the plane. The captain and the first pilot were the last to leave the board.
Luckily, all of us were safe. Even now it is hard to describe the feelings we all shared that moment. Everybody was hugging and comforting each other, my mother helped a stranger with a small child, while my brother and I checked if we can do something for elderly people. Except sirens sounded again, they reminded us of what happened in less than 20 minutes of our flight. Undoubtedly, it was a combination of luck and professionalism of the pilots that landed the plane safely and made it possible for this story to be one with a happy ending.

One night, Lotus was awakened by Feather’s urgent crows (啼叫声). Grandpa opened the door to find their front steps underwater. A faraway earthquake had shaken the lake and flooded the village. “We have to alert the neighbours,” said Grandpa. He and Lotus jumped into their boat, Feather standing tall on the bow. “Wake up! The lake has flooded!” Grandpa shouted as they moved past the dark homes. Lotus struck the metal bucket with her reed cutter again making a noise like thunder. Feather crowed at the top of his voice. House by house, neighbours came out and jumped into their boats. Over three hundred villagers were saved.
Feather became a hero, but March arrived, and birds began appearing in the sky, migrating back north. Feather watched the flocks until they disappeared. Lotus was frightened by Feather’s longing stare, but she knew she should never separate him from his home and family. When Feather was completely healed, she hugged him one more time and then threw him into the sky. Feather hovered and circled, circled and hovered. Lotus waved good-bye, holding her tears back. With a long crow, Feather flapped his big wings and soared north, disappearing into the horizon. Lotus climbed up the hill that faced north, grandpa and her friends following. They sat around her and listened to her whistle. They all believed Feather could hear them, wherever he was.

6. The next day, Nana presented the idea to her garden club and I talked to my friends. Many people started to plant flowers in their gardens. Nana’s garden club convinced the city government to plant a butterfly garden next to the city fountain. My friends and I spread leaflets telling people how to build Monarch Waystations. More and more people took action to make our community monarch-friendy. As spring turned into summer, we found our efforts started to work! A few dozen orange and black butterflies were spotted visiting the waystations. As summer progressed, the monarchs grew more plentiful.
Nana and I created a blog and frequently updated about the community’s efforts. Monarch enthusiasts from across the country contacted us with their own observations, ideas and reflections. Then it happened one day when the sun was shining and the sky was a deep blue, just like Nana remembered a few fluttering (颤动的) orange wings soon became hundreds of soaring butterflies. As monarchs sailed above and around us, Nana cried tears of happiness and gave me an enormous hug. It was truly a spectacular experience. Now I know what it means to stand in an orange cloud of monarchs. I know what people mean when they say, “Seeing is believing.” I learn that if we believe in something strong enough and work to make it happen, we will see our goal become a reality.

2.Flora fetched old flowerpots and found a trowel to dig with. She walked to the yard, knelt down, and found the right place to shovel. Carefully she dug up chunks of earth that had flowers growing out of them. Then, she gently packed each chunk and more soil in a pot, deciding to carry two inside. They would come along to the new house. The others she lined up near her sign. All the work finished, she came back. “Thanks, Papi,” Flora said with smile, taking her seat again.
Now she was ready for selling the yard and joking with customers. Mr. Johnson was picking some toys from the stand. Mrs. Ciro picked several story books. And the two asked jokingly again, “But how much for the yard?” This time, Flora smiled. Her smile was just like Papi’s. “Zero cents!” she said, “Pick any pot of yard you like!” Hearing this, all the neighbors burst into laughter. “Now our yard can survive,” Flora thought to herself delightedly, “both in my new house and on Apple Street” she added.

The word left the children standing stunned. Then, looking up at him, one asked seriously, “Sir, do you really mean that?” The butcher just replied seriously, “ I mean every word of it. She is OUR Daisy. My boy and I will come to see her occasionally. ” Hearing this, all the children gathered round and stroked the pet, their little hearts filled with joy.

10. They brought in used appliances, a couch, kitchen furniture, a bed for me, and dressers and other furniture and a whole mess of food. They even had someone dressed up as Santa to give each of the boys a small gift. They came in with an artificial Christmas tree and decorations. We talked for hours as we put the tree up, and decorated my house for Christmas. I cried when I saw all that they were doing. I cannot tell you how wonderful a Christmas that was.
My children and I have supported a child every year since then. The boys know that even with the little bit we have we can really help. I am hoping that we can give someone the joy that was once given to us. I hope everyone can join in the spirit of love during this upcoming holiday season, and remember that there are angels all around us, not just spiritual ones, but real ones that we can see.
