    The small Christmas Tree
Marcus sat by his window, gazing at the blinking lights on other buildings. He thought of Papa, who was visiting sick grandpa in Jamaica. “I’ll try to help Mama while you’re gone,” Marcus had promised his father.
His little brother, Peter, sat beside him. “When are we getting our Christmas tree, Marcus?” Peter asked, “I can’t wait to decorate it with Mama’s straw birds.”
“We’re not getting a tree this year, Peter,” Marcus said. “Too much money with Grandpa’s illness. Mama said we can’t afford one.”
Someone knocked on their door. A kid of the neighbour rushed in. He looked around, “No tree yet? We bought a big tree a week ago! It’s up to the ceiling (天花板). Just two more days till Christmas! I guess you’re not getting a tree.” He laughed and ran away.
On hearing the words, Peter couldn’t control his tears. Sadly, Marcus walked slowly to his room and shook his piggy bank. Only seven dollars! Far from enough! Mama was too tired to make a living. He decided to earn more on his own. He delivered the milk on his way to school and after school, he stayed busy pushing carts to help shoppers. In the evening, he looked after the baby for neighbors. Two days later, six more dollars jingled (发出叮当声) in his pocket. “My lucky day,” he thought. Thirteen dollars should buy a small tree.
He whistled all the way to the street with the excited Peter. But even the smallest trees were $15 or more. “we’ll never get a tree, brother,” Peter cried, tears in eyes. Marcus didn’t answer. He saw a small tree planted in a can. “Is that one for sale, sir?”
“That’s my last growing tree,” the seller said. “It’s small now, but it will grow tall.”
“How much does it cost?” asked Marcus. “It’s Christmas Eve. For you, $8.” answered the man.

    2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money,” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for a break during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers.

On a mid-September afternoon, Sista and Rafi were racing each other on the mountainside. The girls laughed wildly any stopped for a rest in the shade of a tree.
“Now, I’m hungry,” Sista said. “Yeah. I could really go for a jobo. I love the sweet-and-sour taste!” Rafi said, licking her lips. “I know where there’s a great jobo tree,” Sista said. “It belongs to that lady who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she’s severe, but sometimes she gives fruit in return, for an errand(差事).” They decided to give it a shot.
Raf’s heart pounded as Sista knocked on the door. An elderly woman answered. “Yes?” the lady asked, squinting (眯着眼看) at the girls. Rafi gasped, unable to speak. “We heard…” said Sista, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.” The lady raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes. Payment.” She clicked her tongue. “Nothing is free, eh?”
The lady-let the girls into kitchen, where the smell of warm bread filled the air. She grabbed two baskets, one large and one small, “Go fill these with jobos. Come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and picked the ripest jobos. The moment they returned to the house, the lady handed them a bag filled with warm bread. “Take this bag and the large basket of jobos to the Gomez family. Do you know them?” The girls nodded. “Good. And ask them for the payment. Mrs. Gomez will place it in a large envelope, ” the lady added, warming that if they returned without the envelope of payment, they wouldn’t get the jobos.
Wrestling with the heavy bag and basket along the way, the girls finally arrived at the Gomez home. sweating. Mrs. Gomez answered the door. Walking inside, Rafi saw colorful drawings lying everywhere. The three little Gomez kids were still busy with more pictures, pure smiles on their cute faces. “This is from the lady with the jobo tree,” Sista held up the food. Mrs. Gomez cried, “Thank you. My husband is still sick in bed. Times are hard.”
“But she said to ask you for the payment too,” Rafi said with her eyes dropped. “Oh yes, the payment,” Mrs Gomez said. “The payment!” chanted the children, clapping. Sista and Rafi exchanged glances in confusion, not knowing why they were excited rather than worried. Mrs Gomes then handed Sista a large sealed envelope which was stuffed full. “The payment,” Mrs. Gomez beamed and thanked the girls for their delivery service. On the way back, Rafis said, “I wonder how they can afford to pay so much for that food.” “I know,”Sista agreed, “It looks like a lot of money.”

As a kid, I spent my summers with my grandparents in Texas, which was a welcome change from my Huston life of school and I loved it.
One of the best parts of spending summers with my grandparents was caravanning(乘房车度假)with the caravan club. Every few summers, we would join the trips organized by the caravan club and it was during one of these trips that my grandfather said to me the right words at the right time—it’s much harder to be kind than clever.
I wasn’t very old, maybe ten or eleven, but I was forming my opinions about the world, and of course, I thought I knew much more about things than I actually did.
I was then, as I am now, a big reader and a crazy fan for numbers. Anyone who has been on a long road trip knows that no matter how many books you bring, how beautiful the scenery is, you still have too much time to think. So I spent a good deal of my extra time calculating. I calculated gas mileage. I figured out the average per-item price of groceries bought over the course of the trip. And at some point, I saw an anti-smoking ad on TV. The announcer declared that every time a smoker took a puff of a cigarette(抽一口烟). he was shortening his life time by two minutes. My grandmother was a smoker. I hated it, and not just because I knew that it was bad for her. My guess is that any kid who rides for thousands of miles sitting in the smoke-filled backseat of a 1973 Olds car grows to hate smoking. So on one particularly long driving day, I decided to do the math.
I don’t remember exactly what the number was. Two minutes per puff, twenty puffs per cigarette, twenty cigarettes per pack, one pack a day for thirty years. About sixteen years? When I was satisfied that I had come up with a reasonably accurate number, I poked my head between the two front seats and tapped my grandmother on the shoulder.

Pete hated losing at anything. His parents, teachers, and many others, said he didn’t know how to lose, but the truth of it was that he couldn’t stand losing, not even at marbles (弹珠游戏). He felt so good, when he won, that he never wanted to give up that feeling; not for anything in the world. On top of that, losing made him feel precisely the opposite. It seemed to Pete that losing was the worst thing that could happen to anyone. If there was a game Pete wasn’t brilliant at, he simply wouldn’t play it. But if he was going to win he would take part, even if the game lasted only a minute. And the kind of things he was really good at, like table football, you could hardly stop him playing.
A new kid named Albert started at Pete’s school. For several days Pete watched the new guy. He was great at some things, terrible at others — to an embarrassing degree — but he enjoyed everything equally. Pete saw Albert playing basketball once. He was absolutely hopeless; he lost time after time. But that happy smile never left Albert’s face. Albert was an especially good table football player, and it didn’t take Pete and Albert long before they challenged each other to a game.
Pete prepared for the match with great seriousness. He was concentrated and intense (紧张的) . Albert, on the other hand, seemed not to be taking the thing at all seriously.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On that day, Pete’s great victory (胜利) was on everyone’s lips. But, that night, Pete didn’t feel so happy.

When I was in high school, I joined the track and field team as a long distance runner. At first, I didn’t think much of it. It was just a way to stay active and maybe make some new friends. But little did I know that decision would change my life forever.
It was the day of the biggest race of the season. The entire school was buzzing with excitement. The stands were packed with parents, students, and even some alumni(校友). The atmosphere was electric, and I felt a mixture of nerves and adrenaline(肾上腺素) running through my veins.
As I stood at the starting line, I took a deep breath and tried to calm my racing heart. I looked around at the other runners, sizing up my competition. They-all looked so confident and poised(蓄势待发), while I felt small and insignificant.
The gun went off, and we were of. I tried to keep pace with the others, but I quickly fell behind. My legs felt heavy, and my breathing was labored. I wanted to give up, to just stop running and walk off the track. But then, something miraculous happened.
I heard someone cheering for me. It was my best friend, who had come to watch the race. She was shouting my name and clapping her hands, urging me to keep going. It was like a switch had flipped inside of me. I suddenly felt a surge of energy, and I picked up the pace.
I started passing other runners, one by one. I could hear them grunting and panting, trying to keep up, but I pushed myself harder. I felt like I was flying, like I could run forever. And before I knew it, I had crossed the finish line.
I was in shock. I had done it. I had won the race. My teammates and coaches were all congratulating me, but I didn’t really hear them. All I could think about was how one person’s support had changed everything for me.

    7.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.
Then, the science teacher, Mr. Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. The students would produce paper airplane designs. They would stand in line on the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.
When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the wrestling team, bragged (吹牛) to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.” However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another sheet and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

    Moving In
My eighty-five-year-old mother offered that familiar tilt (歪头) of the head, the one that told me something was up. I tensed my shoulders and bit my lip, waiting for whatever was coming next.
I could handle it. She was predictable, though dramatic. I expected her to express her thoughts on the latest news or share the senior community news.
Instead, she calmly said, as though she were sharing her dinner menu, “I’m going to downsize and sell my house and nearly everything I own.” The breaking news was followed by a matter of fact stare.
“Do what?” I asked. “I’ll be a floater,” she said.
“I’ll stay with you, then with my brothers in Maine, and then with some of my friends. I’ll just float around and enjoy myself.” She laughed as though she’d just discovered the perfect lifestyle. “I’ll take my cat everywhere with me. I can’t bear to leave him behind or give him away. What do you think?”
“No one will want you to show up with your cat.” My answer seemed a shock to her. After only seconds, she added, “Well, I just won’t tell them he’s coming. We’ll just show up. What can they do?”
Shocked, I took a deep breath and forced myself to respond by explaining all the reasons why selling, moving in with me, and fearlessly dragging the cat across the country in secret were terrible ideas.
Unbothered, she simply said, “You’re so dramatic. It’ll be fine.”
I didn’t take her announcement seriously. A few days after her announcement,my brother and I enjoyed a few laughs over her idea. After all, our mother was too independent to be placed in a place long-term with any of her children. She had made this clear on many occasions when I’d begged to live next door to her. I’d wanted to be close enough to watch over her but not too close, but she’d always refused.
I enjoyed living alone, hearing the quiet, writing and reading. I hated noise. My mother loved radio, television, and phone calls, endless phone calls. We would not make good housemates.

Good morning! My name is Sarah Williams. It’s an honour to be here and to share with you the story of how music has had an impact on my life.
Have you ever faced a time when things looked dark and you had no hope at all? Two years ago, I was told I had a serious disease which was difficult to cure. My body ached all the time and thus I thought I didn’t have much longer to live. I was very afraid and I felt so alone and discouraged. Then one day, I had to go through a two-hour medical treatment. The doctor wanted me to relax so he had me listen to some music, and one of the songs was “Happy”. The song made me feel so much better that from then on I began to listen to music all the time. John A.Logan said, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” And it’s true. Music helped me recover.

When we lost our beloved ones, we must feel heartbroken. However, we can do something to make the world remember them.
My little boy, Matthew, had recently lost his beloved grandma. He would often push hare may hand in tears, longing for his grandma to come back to the world. One day, he had an idea. He asked me if we could do something in honor of Grandma so the world could remember her. When I welcomed his lovely suggestion, he said we could create something special for the children at the hospital, since Grandma had always wanted to volunteer there. Although heart was so ready to give, her physical capacity was limited. She couldn’t drive or make the long walk over to the hospital and therefore had spent the majority of her days doing what she could for family and friends. So, we decided to fulfill Grandma’s last life wish.
Matthew and I teamed up and presented our kindness proposal to his preschool classmates. We energized them with the prospect of going shopping and purchasing small gifts (chocolates, flowers, and cards) which they could put into handcrafted holiday baskets which the kids themselves could make. It would be a basket which was wholly made by one child and solely for another. As the young faces happily agreed, we were off on executing our plan!
Matthew and I scouted out (搜索) the most child-friendly stores and distributed fliers (传单) at these locations so the store owners were aware of our plan and could bring their most cherished items for the preschoolers to purchase. Matthew's preschool peers selectively made their picks, and after we collected all of the items, we placed the chocolates, flowers, and got well cards into seven beautifully crafted baskets for the bedridden children at our local Children's Hospital. When Matthew and two of his other little mates came to the hospital to make their deliveries, they were greeted with a tour of the facilities before they entered into each hospital room to change a sick child into a smiling one.

    参考答案:
    1.Sample writing:
“It’s so small,” Peter complained. “Being small isn’t a bad thing. You’re small, but you are special,” Marcus told his brother as he paid for the tree. “It will grow bigger, just like you.” Peter’s eyes opened wide.“There are 5 dollars left. Let’s go to the store,” Marcus said. They shopped quickly: a scarf for Mama; a coloring book for Peter; a wallet for Marcus. Peter giggled, “Mama will be surprised.” They hurried home. Marcus set their tree on the table and Peter couldn’t wait to place straw birds on the branches.
When they were busy decorating the tree, Mama came in. What came to her sight really astonished her. Lovely straw birds were hanging on a small lovely Christmas tree; presents were on the sofa. “What happened? The Santa Claus came?” asked the Mama. “Marcus is the Santa!” Peter replied, dashing to mom. “He worked after school and earned some money. He bought the Christmas tree and presents.” “But I can’t afford a big tree, mom,” Marcus said, hanging his head. “My dear, it is the biggest and most beautiful tree in my heart!” said mom. 4.    I told grandma that she had taken sixteen years off her life from smoking. I have a vivid memory of what happened, and it was not what I expected. I expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills. That’s not what happened. Instead, my grandmother burst into tears. I sat in the backseat and did not know what to do. While my grandmother sat crying, my grandfather, who had been driving in silence, pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway.
My grandpa got out of the car and asked me to follow. Was I in trouble? My grandfather was a highly intelligent, quiet man. He had never said a harsh word to me, and maybe this was to be the first time? Or maybe he would ask that I get back in the car and apologize to my grandmother. We stopped beside the trailer. My grandfather looked at me, and after a bit of silence, he gently and calmly said, “Jeff, one day you'll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.”

5.Pete prepared for the match with great seriousness. He was concentrated and intense. Albert, on the other hand, seemed not to be taking the thing at all seriously. He was laughing and joking as if it was all just a game. Pete knew he was going to win, but he wanted to make sure. He used all the skills and techniques he had learned and practiced over the years.
On that day, Pete’s great victory was on everyone’s lips. But, that night, Pete didn’t feel so happy. He had won, but he hadn’t enjoyed it. He had felt a strange sense of sadness when he saw Albert’s face. Despite his loss, Albert was still happy and laughing. Pete realized that winning didn’t mean as much as he had thought if it was at the cost of someone else’s joy. From that day on, Pete began to look at losing differently; not as something to avoid, but as something to accept, and even embrace.

6.After the race, everything was different. From that day on, I approached everything in my life with a new sense of determination and confidence. I no longer underestimated myself or my abilities. Instead, I tackled challenges head-on, knowing that with hard work and perseverance, I could achieve anything. I felt strong and capable. I started training harder and pushing myself to new limits. What’s more, the friend who had cheered for me became my biggest cheerleader, coming to every race and shouting words of encouragement.
Besides these changes, the race taught me a valuable lesson. It taught me the power of being confident and the importance of having a support system. Sometimes what it takes to make all the difference is one person to believe in you. It doesn’t matter how big or small their support may seem. It can be a simple word of encouragement, a pat on the back, or even just a smile. But that support can change your life. And for that, I am forever grateful.

    7.One possible version:
The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a mighty yell, he launched the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone clapped. Finally, it was Brian’s turn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed —10 feet past Paul’s plane! The whole school cheered. Brian was the winner. Mr. Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane.
Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best — the paper airplane that flew the farthest — he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.

8.I really panicked when she started having yard sales. “Are you serious?” I asked her one day. “Of course,” she answered. I forced myself to face what was happening, and I begged for some cherished items. Then one day Mom caught a bad cold and had a high fever. I was afraid and sent her to the hospital. During those days, I was no longer stressed about her floater plan, whether it was right or logical. I just wanted her to be okay. Luckily, she recovered.
I took her to my home from the hospital happily, no longer bothered by her moving in. I am not saying we would get along perfectly, but I see things differently. Her moving in with me hadn’t been part of the plan — living next to her had been. I’ve realized I don’t have to understand her, just love her while she’s here and take every moment I have with her as a gift. Whenever I had time, I would take her to travel, to realize her dream.

Music gave me happiness. When I listened to music, it made my spirits fly like a kite in the wind. Music gave me strength and brought me relief. It was the rock I leant on to become strong and to get through those hard times. Moreover, music gave me hope and a sense of satisfaction. It became my best friend. It spoke words of encouragement to the deepest part of my being.
Of course, I hope none of you have to go through the same kind of suffering that I did. At the same time, we all go through various periods when we feel sad or alone. 10.Now, five years have passed, and the Matthew “hospital” tradition has continued. We continue to make the baskets of sweetness and wellness for the children. The children together with us are continuously increasing, because as this event has become a permanent thing in our lives, so have these children too. In this spirit of expansion, we have seen this sense of community spread as the gift baskets now include not only items we purchase from stores, but also donated items from Matthew’s school and our church.
Matthew’s school and the local church have contributed to the rise of gift baskets. The number of gift baskets have risen from severely low to fifty. In addition to distributing the baskets to our local children’s hospital, we now work together to distribute them to other children’s hospitals that assist children who are suffering cancer. Seeing the children’s smiles makes us delighted and encouraged. My little Matthew finally has helped his beloved grandma achieve her dream. Her spirit of kindness will always live on in the hearts of these small children.
