It was the first week of Mia's middle school. The bell's ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Mia followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Mia, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn't think others would like her.
Mia finally sat in Mr. Johnson's Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Mia forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We'll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Mia desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply(长粉刺的)face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Mia began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let's see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Mia originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher's voice. “He's actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students' papers not read, including Mia's paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

2.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Having worked at a small food store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager called “customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “sir”, “madam”, “thank you” and “sorry” would see me through any situation. But on a Christmas night an old woman shook my belief that such a glib response (巧言应对) could smooth over any difficulty while dealing with other human beings.
The moment she entered the store, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door. On such a zero-degree night, she was wearing only a faded print dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined legs.
After walking around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables. She looked at the row of cans, finally picked up a can of corn and stared at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good and polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain. An unpleasant smell of sweat rose from her torn clothing.
“I need some food,” she muttered in reply to my bright “Madam, can I help you?”
“Are you looking for corn, madam?”
“I need some food,” she repeated, looking down at the can in her hand, “Any kind.”
“Well, the can of corn is ninety-five cents. madam.” I said in my most helpful voice. “Or if you like, we have a special on bread today.”
After a short pause, she lifted her head and said, “But I can’t pay.”
For a second, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that she could take the corn.

3.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old tan-and-white rescue cat, is a homebody—and for good reason. The one time he got out his yard in Washington, DC, he managed to get stuck in a 12-metre-tall tree for two days with no food or water.
Hank’s big adventure started last November 6. Delores Bushong, his 75-year-old owner, had just returned from a farmer’s market when she realized Hank hadn’t come in for his midday snack. She called his name in alleys and streets around her home. As it got dark, she began to worry. Then she heard mewing, looked up, and spotted Hank, perched on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.
Busbong believes Hank got under a fence and then became scared by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed.
“Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but actually they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).
Bushong now worried about getting Hank down, asked the HRA to take the lead, but it was no easy task HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help, citing safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding (脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance.

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Radzi was the first out of the plane. He collected his luggage and quickly made his way to the arrival, hardly able to contain his excitement at meeting his family after six years abroad. He looked around expectantly, hoping to hear his voice being called out but he heard no sweet voices. He turned around and saw his parents, their dear faces shining with pride and pleasure but of his teenage twin sisters—none. There was no sign of them.
“They must be hiding somewhere—they love to play hide and seek.”. His father smiled but said nothing. His mother kept on hugging him not allowing him to say anything. His father murmured, “Let's get home. They're waiting for us at home.” Radzi smiled, relieved to know they were at home. He kept on talking about how he toured Europe as Wani asked him to in her letter and he was rather puzzled whenever his parents exchanged glances.
Reaching home, he spied a lone figure at the door. “Why one? There should be two.” The twins were inseparable but it could be that six years had made all the difference. As that lone figure rushed towards him, he thought it was Wani but she said she was Wati. So it must be. He really could not differentiate between the two of them and they had fun deceiving him all the time. And they really had a lot of laughter over his mistaking one for the other.
“Where's Wani?”
“In your bedroom.”
“Wani, Bang's home.”
He walked into his room and read the words ‘Welcome Home, Dr. Radzi!’ He trusted his twin sisters to be so dramatic! He was studying medicine as a doctor and he had been focusing on his final examinations which needed much concentration. Wati invited him to go downstream to their favorite hideout. “Bang, I wish to be alone with you without Wani. Wani can wait her turn.”

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house in Puthur in Tamil Nadu, which was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm(棕榈) trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, the children would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play with the rabbits and squirrels jumping about in the trees and bushes. He also liked fishing in the link ponds with his friends. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation. Sami was surprised when be came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. What lay at the water’s edge(边缘) were only sucks and mud. He saw houses built near the sea. Logs(木材), branches of trees and stones lay around. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
“Grandpa, where have all the trees gone?” asked Sami.
“People have cut them down for wood, to be used for fuel and furniture.” replied Grandpa.
“There will be no more trees then. Where will the birds perch(栖息) and the squirrels play?”
“Let us hope that that day never comes,” sighed Grandpa.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He liked each palm tree in his courtyard. He also admired the two big trees near the front door. He called one of them Petu, and the other, Beta. They gave the sweetest juiciest coconuts which he always enjoyed sharing with Sami.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He tossed and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting(裂开). He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa, “It’s an earthquake”. Grandpa cried out. They ran outside the house where they thought it would be safer.

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship in a new town.
My parents had moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs, but they didn't realize I was really hurt when I had to say goodbye to my old friends. It felt frightful to be a new student in my new school. When my classmates were chatting, I felt left out. I was not good at math or history, nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid (羞怯的). I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones with whom I could be friends for my whole life. I felt there was no room for anyone else on my friends list. I was ashamed of myself, and believed I deserved no notice from others. That is, until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, frank and easy to be around. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day but I never talked to her, even though we were in the same class. How I wished I could be like her, or at least be a friend of hers.
It was another ordinary day. I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing with their friends, but who could I sing with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that?
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you need help? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they're new, so if Fm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded furious but curious. “All I want is a chance to audition. I just want you to know my face. That’s all I’m asking.”
I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered,“Sure!”

Last December, Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana, when something caught his eye. As Alvin approached, he saw that the object was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child’s Christmas wish list.
“Dear Santa,” the handwritten note read. “My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll, puppy, My Little Pony. With love, Luna.”
Alvin’s heart hammered in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scene. He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna’s wish come true too. He just wasn’t sure how.
Liberal is more than 650 miles from Grand Cane. But Alvin’s wife was not held back by the distance. As a passionate Facebook user, she had seen people find all sorts of connections through the site and thought it might help her husband find Luna.
Alvin posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender. At first, he wasn’t confident it would work. But as he saw the number of people sharing his post creep into the hundreds, his hope grew into expectation.
Meanwhile, Leticia Flores, the mother of four-year old Luna had no idea that such an effort was underway. It had been a hard year for Leticia and her girl. As Covid-19 spread, the family felt lonely, scared and isolated. On a particularly tough day last December, Leticia came up with the idea of having the girl send a letter to Santa by balloon.
One day in early January, Leticia noticed that a friend had been calling her all morning. When Leticia finally called her back, the friend blurted, “Someone found Luna’s balloon.”

10.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Whatever life threw at us each year, come Christmas our family had one constant tradition: our dog Pepper opened our presents for us. Watching our sweet dog unwrap gifts always warmed the holiday, which was often a little bittersweet because college, studying abroad, or work commitments often kept my two sisters and me away.
One year, everyone made it home for a Christmas together. I visited from college, Kaci flew in from Arizona, and Kara was back from Ireland. Mom’s jubilance kept her busy baking cookies for us all. Our Christmas season should have been perfect.
It couldn’t feel perfect, though, because Pepper’s health was deteriorating. Her life had already been longer than we expected —she was fourteen —and yet her mind was still sharp. Her enthusiasm for life made us feel better. But her body could not keep up with her spirit. She’d already shown the usual signs of deafness and stiffness. That year, her hips and back legs started giving out on her. We knew we would soon have to make a difficult decision.
It was likely Pepper’s last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she enjoyed it. On Christmas Eve, we gathered around the tree to open an early present. We each took a turn and then called Pepper to open one more. But her tangled legs could not navigate the boxes and shredded wrapping paper on the floor. She stumbled over the obstacles, and soon she disappeared into the next room. She crumpled back to the floor, as out of the way as she could get.
We were heartbroken. Could Pepper even participate in her last Christmas? Pepper stayed on the periphery of all our holiday activities. Throughout the day, we gave gifts but did not feel very giving. We shared stories over cinnamon rolls that tasted bland. We played games by the tree whose twinkles had dimmed.
That evening, Kaci said what we’d all been thinking: “I wish Pepper could have helped open presents this year.” We all put down our mugs of spiced tea. “Maybe she still could,” Kara said. “But there’s none left,” Mom reminded her. Kara jumped up and left the room. We heard her opening drawers and cabinets in the kitchen.

(2)请按如下格式在答题纸上作答。
Kara returned with a box of dog biscuits, scissors, a pile of color paper, and a roll of tape.

1.One possible version:
A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Mia was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Mia's turn. Frozen with fear, Mia stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Mia began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn't notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story.
After Mia finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Mia was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Mia finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Mia slowly lifted her head while walking. Later. she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student.

Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: Remain polite but do not let the customers take control of you. At the thought of that, I managed a friendly smile and automatically blurted out, “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t give away anything for free.” Hearing this, the old woman nodded her head, her face darkened and eyelids dropped. Unwillingly, she put the can back on the shelf, shuffled past me toward the door and vanished into the distance. It was at that moment that a ripple of regret welled up inside me. How I wished I hadn’t said those words! (81词)
Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn. Fortunately, the gaunt figure of the old woman was still in sight. I went running up to her. “Madam, merry Christmas!” said I, thrusting the can of corn into her blue-veined hand. For a second, I could feel that her hand quivered. Without waiting for her reply, I just waved her goodbye before trotting straight away. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman constantly reminded me that while dealing with other human beings, it was sincere concern rather than a glib response that could smooth over any difficulty. (92词)
Possible version 2:
Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: Remain polite, but do not let customers get the best of you. For a moment, I even entertained the idea that this was some sort of test, and that this woman was someone from the head office, testing my loyalty. I responded dutifully, “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t give away anything for free.” The old woman’s face collapsed a bit more and her hands trembled as she put the can back on the shelf. She shuffled past me toward the door, her torn and dirty clothing barely covering her bent back. (80词)
Moments after she left, I rushed out the door with the can of corn. But she was nowhere in sight. While I was dragging myself back, what kept me company was merely biting wind. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman haunted me. I had been so young, healthy, and smug while she so old, sick, and desperate. Wishing with all my heart that I had acted like a human being rather than so merciless an employee, I was saddened to realize when facing dilemmas how difficult it was for a heart to stay gold.(85词)

3.Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue. Ed Baptiste, whose tree Hank had climbed, let Bushong sit in his backyard and called to Hank. Another neighbor came up with an idea. He asked Bushong to fill a special bag with some of Hank’s favorite food. Then he tied the bag to a long bamboo pole. He took a 42-foot ladder under the tree. He climbed up the ladder and positioned the bag just beneath Hank. Luckily, Hank jumped in after a while, and he lowered the cat slowly.
Paragraph 2:
Once on the ground, Bushong scooped Hank into her arms, holding him close. Bushong expressed her appreciation to the people there. The neighbors comforted Bushong and felt happy for her. In a quiet sad and serious tone, she related what had happened to Wani. A year ago, Wani fell seriously ill and was diagnosed with cancer. Everyone wanted to tell Radzi but Wani begged them not to as he was sitting for his finals and she did not want him to lose all concentration and be so upset. Everyone had to promise and even after his finals, she wrote him to tour Europe before coming home. She sent him photos of her with Wati, smiling, cheerful, and healthy. Radzi was stunned and asked in agony, “How could she? Why did you let her do it? Why? Why? ” Wati kept silent. All she could do was to hug her brother, comforting him as he sobbed his heart out. When the tears dried up, Wati held out a letter. Radzi recognized the handwriting.
He took the letter and walked to the graveyard. Wati went with him, then left him to read the letter and to be alone in spirit with his beloved sister. “Bang, please don’t grieve. Remember me as the healthy, cheerful, fun-loving sister. Treasure our past moments and keep me always in your heart. Wati is with you. In her, you see me. I want to be a doctor like you. I can’t but you are one now. Be the best doctor I know. I am proud of you. ” As he read her letter, a strange peace fell on him. It was as though she was beside him, comforting him and holding his hand. He looked around, saw Wati and she smiled. In Wati, he saw Wani. He walked up to Wati, took her hand. Together, the brother and sister walked home in the silence of the quiet evening.

Huge waves from the sea came crashing towards the village. They swallowed Sami and Grandpa, separated them away, and then drew back again into the sea, dragging whatever came their way. Grandpa caught hold of Petu and climbed up. He panicked and screamed out to Sami but couldn’t see him. “Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried and wailed. The high waves came with terrifying speed and force. A wave carried him round and round. Finally he was thrown on top of a big coconut palm.
Paragraph 2:
A minutes later, the waves went back and the sea calmed down. Sami hung onto the coconut tree. He could hear the cries and the sighs of people in pain. He slowly came down the tree, very frightened. He began to call out, “Grandpa, Grandpa!” as loudly as he could. Looking around, he saw a gray, old lonely man hanging onto the tree. He went closer. It was Petu, the coconut tree, and Grandpa was on its top. He helped Grandpa get off carefully. Looking at the tree, Sami and Grandpa couldn’t help hugging it with tears of gratitude.

As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group? That outfit was too strange.” They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stock-still, not believing what had just happened.
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next class. When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance. With boldness, I finished my performance relatively smoothly though palms were sweating. Never in my wildest dream did I imagine that I was indeed assigned the intern job to act on a school life show and my first public appearance on TV was in five days. After sharing the thrilling news with my dad, I received the warmest congratulations and expectations from my family. Picturing my families eagerly waiting for my performance, I worked day and night as busy as a bee for fear that I would make a fool of myself live on TV.
Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching. Wearing fancy dress and delicate make up, I was so proud but nervous that my show would be watched by so many audience. My mind suddenly went blank as I was immersed in my thoughts and totally forgot my lines. Deep frowns gradually climbed on my partners' face, with whose sudden vigorous pull, I was driven back to the reality. I soon came up with a little trick to make up for the embarrassing blank. As the show went on, so concentrated was I that I hardly dared to even blink my eyes. After my debut, I rang my dad with frustration and disappointment, only to reap his trust and encouragement again. It was literally dad's love that supported me along my way to be an outstanding actor.

Kara returned with a box of dog biscuits, scissors, a pile of color paper, and a roll of tape. She cut a small section from the paper and wrapped a single dog treat in it. She held it up as if she had just struck gold. “Now there’s a present for her!” I knelt on the floor next to Kara and wrapped another. Kaci and Mom joined in, too. Soon, we had four elegantly wrapped dog biscuits in a row on the floor. we cleared the floor of discarded wrapping paper. “Go get Pepper,” we urged, bouncing eagerly. Mom went into the next room. “You wanna open a present, girl” she coaxed. In a moment, Pepper stuck her head into the room, ears fully perked with anticipation and curiosity. Skidded on stilted legs to the row of presents, she sniffed all four in order and looked back and forth. She d never had such a wide choice before.
Soon, Pepper selected her first Christmas gift. She nimbly turned the present with her forepaw, just like she was a spry young dog once more. She tugged every last scrap of paper off the dog treat before she chewed it with her customary grace. Our family swelled with glee. Pepper licked the last crumb from the floor. She eyed the remaining three presents, then turned to Mom as if asking, “May I please open another?” “Go ahead, girl!” Mom encouraged. For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the sheer joy of being together.

At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me?” With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom.
At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn’t decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by their reputation, but by who they are.

8.One possible version:

10.One possible version:
Our family felt whole — not because we were in the same room, city, or country, but because our love bonded us together.
