I had been acting in school for a few years. When I got a rough role in a play, I, only a junior in my high school, was excited that my inspiring drama teacher and director had trusted me with the part.
We had little time to prepare and I would never forget reading the lines for the first time. At first the dialogue was lively, but then it became quite long and boring. To my surprise, my character had one disrespectful line that complained about his bad luck. I had never said something like that on stage before. Uncomfortable as I felt about it, I had never thought of making myself heard to make a change. I was weak, went silent, and accepted the line as it was.
At our first rehearsal (彩排), I whispered, the line and hoped with so many distractions on stage that the director wouldn’t notice. Luckily, she didn’t. Over three wild weeks of rehearsals, I convinced myself that I could keep faking it. Then, when the curtain finally rose with an audience, maybe I would feel fine about saying the line just once as loudly as I could.
On the night of the open dress rehearsal, I was nervous to see an old couple, the Ehlers, seated in the hall. They were close friends of our family and I had no idea they would be there. When the big moment arrived, with nervousness racing through my body, I went for it. I remember the moment quite clearly. Where I stood. How it sounded. How I felt.
After the show, the Ehlers met me with cheers, a warm hug, and some brief dialogue of their own. While talking with them, I was overwhelmed by mixed feelings of regret and shame.

“Yeah, a BATTLE!” said William, pulling my arm. “You see that, John?”
I looked up from my desk to see Ms. Chow writing on the board, “Battle of the Books!” She smiled and then said, “Are you ready to go into the battle? Get prepared for it next week!”
“Is it a reading contest?” I was so excited that I forgot to raise my hand first.
“Good question, John!” said Ms. Chow. “It is not a race and you are not going to beat each other. We are not going to see who can read the fastest or the most books, but you are going to form a team of three and then set a reading goal for your team. If your team meet your goal by the end of this month, you will get a prize!”
Even though the prize was something silly, that still sounded pretty good to me. I turned towards William immediately, saying,“Shall we be teammates?”
“Yes, for sure!” he said. William and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal together.
The be1l rang before Ms. Chow could explain any more rules. William and I were about to begin our discussion when Lily passed my desk and said “Teammates?” to William and me. Lily was a girl from Spain and she could read super-fast in both English and Spanish! If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.
“Yeah,of course!” William and I nodded. I had my team! The three of us settled down and started a discussion immediately, trying to figure out what we needed to do to get the prize. Just then, I saw my best friend Tom running towards my desk. I could clearly see the expectation shining in his eyes.

Zlateh the Goat
This winter, for Reuven, it was a bad one, and after long hesitation he decided to sell Zlateh, the goat. She was old and gave little milk. Reuven told his boy Aaron to take the goat to the butcher in town.
Aaron understood what it meant, but he had to obey his father. Leah, his mother, wiped the tears from her eyes. Aaron put on thick clothes, and took along two slices of bread with cheese to eat on the road.
While the family said good-bye to the goat, Zlateh licked Reuven’s hand and she shook her small white beard. The sun was shining when Aaron left the village. Suddenly the weather changed. In his twelve years Aaron had never experienced a snow like this. His hands were numb, and he could no longer feel his toes.
Suddenly he found a haystack (干草堆) and dragged Zlateh after him. When he reached the hay, he made out a nest for himself and the goat. The moment she smelt the hay, she began to eat. Outside, the snow continued to fall. Aaron ate his two slices of bread and cheese. Then he milked her. The milk was rich and sweet.
The outside was still completely dark. He began to talk to Zlateh. “If the snow keeps on falling like this, we may have to stay here for days,” Aaron explained.
“Maaaa,” Zlateh bleated.
Aaron said patiently. “I need you and you need me. Isn’t that right?”
“Maaaa.”
For three days Aaron and Zlateh stayed in the haystack. Aaron had always loved Zlateh, but in these three days he loved her more and more. She fed him with her milk and helped him keep warm.
On the morning of the fourth day Aaron heard the ringing of sleigh (雪橇) bells. The peasant who drove the sleigh pointed out the way to him — not to the butcher, but home to the village. Aaron had decided in the haystack that he would never part with Zlateh.

Lucy Marlow had everything an eleven-year-old girl could possibly want except one thing:a pair of pink leather roller skates(旱冰鞋). Unfortunately, the skates cost over $1,700. Even though Lucy’s parents were very indulgent(纵容的), they thought it was too much for a toy. “It’s not a toy!” Lucy cried. “It’s transportation!” Lucy’s parents gave in and promised that she could have them only if she had straight A on her report card.
Soon at the end of the term, Lucy proudly presented her parents with the straight—A report card they’d demanded, and the next weekend, Lucy was whizzing(飞速行驶)around the neighborhood faster than anyone else with her new skates.
Then one day when Lucy went to school, she was surprised to discover there was a new girl in her class. She was sitting at the desk next to Lucy in geography and she looked very friendly.
“Hi! I’m Lucy!” Lucy whispered, “Want to go roller skating after school?”
“Hi! Mi name is Heather. But I’m afraid I can’t!” Heather said.
”Listen, if you don’t have skates, you can use my old ones, “Lucy said.” I have a brand new pair...”
The bell rang, Heather reached to pick up a pair of crutches(拐杖)under the desk and got up. Lucy was shocked to find one of her legs was missing above the knee. She gasped, “Oh, I’m so sorry! What happened?” Heather shrugged, “It was a car accident.”
That night, Lucy couldn’t sleep. She got up and turned on her laptop. There were all kinds of prosthetic limbs(假肢)for kids. Lucy wondered why Heather didn’t have one.
The next day, over lunch, Lucy asked Heather, “So, how come you don’t have a prosthetic limb?” Heather blushed. “I had one three years ago, after the accident,” she explained, “But I outgrew it. My dad lost his job so we don’t have insurance anymore. We’ve contacted a non-profit that helps kids like me, but I’m on a waiting list...” Hearing her words, Lucy fell into a short silence, remembering how she pressured her parents into buying her the pink skates.

Valuable Lesson-My Favorite Superhero
After helping his mother Mary sweep, the street as usual, Jack waved goodbye to her and rushed to school. Reminding Jack of safety, Mary smiled and continued her work, with sweat streaming down. Weak and tired as she was, this brave woman still stuck to her job attentively.
In the classroom, Mrs. Evans asked her students to deliver a speech, themed My Favorite Superhero. As for the heated topic, the class got thrilled, hardly waiting to share their opinions. Finally, it came to Jack’s turn. “My favorite superhero.” Jack started to read in front of the class, then he stopped. He was nervous and felt a bit silly, because his classmates all talked about superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Wonder Woman while he was the only one who talked about a real person.
“Go on, Jack.” Mrs. Evans encouraged, nodding at him with smiling eyes.
“My favorite superhero is Mary, my mom.” the class burst into laughter. Jack smiled, too, and wet his lips, “You might laugh at me for saying something like that.” He turned calm and peaceful, “But my mom is the most hard-working person in the world. She is a street sweeper for the city, always getting up before sunrise to start her job. It’s her commitment that keeps the street spotless, just with a broom (扫把) and her heart. With autumn coming, I realized how hard it is and that a real superhero doesn’t wear a cape (斗篷) or go on adventures. Besides, she raised us three kids alone. She loves us in her way, and we can feel it. Though we’re short in money, we seem never lack anything. A real hero takes care of his family. I’m helping her before going to school and hope to grew up and be half the hero my mom is.Thank you.”
After the speech. silence spread in the classroom. It was evident that the entire class was moved by Jake’s speech and got speechless.
Finally, Mrs. Evans spoke. “That was fantastic. You teach us a mother’s bravery and love Your mom should be proud!” When returning to his seat, he received thumbs-up and admiring eyes from his classmates.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps” and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face. In the corner a piano player was listlessly (无精打采地) playing Christmas music.
All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and sad, she sat down at a table.
The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman’s table.
“Merry Christmas,” he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers. “How much are they?”
“Two francs, sir.”
The sailor put a twenty franc note in the woman’s hand.
“I don’t have change, sir,” she said. “I’ll get some from the waiter.”
“No, ma’am,” said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek. “This is my Christmas present for you.”

Little Rat
Little Rat was not a rat. She was a girl of seven, but most neighbours thought she was only four. People called her by that because her skin was too dark. In the early 1900s, life was rather tough for a kid without parents. She was often teased with questions like, “Who is your father? Where is your mother?”
One night Little Rat lay down on her bed after a day’s heavy work. She was about to fall into sleep when she saw a rat slipping out of a hole in the wall. “A little rat!” she screamed, which scared the rat to escape away.
Lying down, however, somehow the girl couldn’t sleep any more. “It’s good that I’m not alone here,” she thought. She slipped down from the bed, tiptoed a few steps away, and looked at the hole. Again, the rat ran out, shook off the dust from his furs and smelled around with his little wet nose. At last he found a chicken bone on the floor. The rat picked up the bone with his swift paws and began to bite it greedily.
“He must be very hungry,” the girl thought. The idea made her feel hungry, too. Carefully she took a small piece of bread out of her pocket and threw some onto the floor before the little rat. Seeing no threat from the human before him, the animal reached the bread and all of a sudden he forgot all possible dangers and snatched the bread.
So day after day the girl kept company with the little rat. She fed him with the little food she had, and the rat would eat out of her hand. The girl was beaten by her aunt more often than before, because she always seemed eager to run back to her little room after doing the washing in the evening.
One morning the girl was carrying a barrel of water to her aunt’s garden. Suddenly she heard a sharp cry from the kitchen. It was her aunt. “Rat! A rat!” she screamed. Then the girl heard the woman chasing the rat in the kitchen.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Our car ran over the sand and rocks, leaving a cloud of dust. It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was bright and the sky was clear—perfect conditions for off-roading(越野). Back then, in 1984, my wife Sue and I were living in southeastern California. The views were wonderful, but with dangers. The temperatures could rise above 50℃, and it was no place for tourists to go off-roading without enough preparation.
Sue and I always took a bag with us, packed with snacks, water, and a first aid kit. We also had a car specially changed for driving in the desert. With it, we could go anywhere a jeep could go.
That day, we drove about 20 miles into the park. Around midday,we stopped to have a rest. As usual, we could see the desert before us. When the spirit of adventure moved us, we went back into the car. But when I turned the key nothing happened. I tried again and again. Nothing happened. I could see Sue was thinking the same thing—the engine wouldn’t start.
Our car had one strange problem. About once a year, it would refuse to start. If left overnight, the engine would run just fine the next morning. But no one could find anything wrong with our car. Because it happened so rarely, we’d just learned to live with it. But it had never happened suddenly.
“What should we do?” I felt a little anxious. I hadn’t seen a person on our drive out here, and we had no way to call for help.“We could walk back to town,”Sue said. Eager not to waste any more daylight,we quickly packed our things. We were about to set off when Sue called my name.“Look!” she cried. Sure enough, there was something, getting closer.

10.I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump(水泵)did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn’t working, we had to walk five kilometres to the closest stream.
But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita’s house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, “Tomorrow we’re going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was ... nothing in front of us. “I don’t want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed,“Start walking, Amy. I promise you’ll be surprised.” After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That’s Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. “Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?” he asked. “Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said, Kabir’s forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).

1.“Jason, that was quite some language. You surprised us,” Mrs. Ehlers looked at me. I told Mrs. Ehlers frankly that I had been unwilling to say it. Mrs. Ehlers patted me on the shoulder consolingly, suggesting that I should have told the director to change it. I nodded my head, but still doubted whether the director would let me. Mrs. Ehlers seemed to have read my mind and said with a soft smile, “Whatever you get is a gain. We have to stand up and give it a try sometimes, don't we?”
I said goodbye to the couple and waited in the drama room until our director appeared. With my heart racing, I stood near her desk and casually asked if I might possibly change the disrespectful line in the play to a more decent one. She sank into silence for a moment and replied, “Your replacement is indeed more appropriate. Thank you!” Agreeably surprised by her response, I left with a mixture of gratitude, humility, respect and shame. From that moment on, I felt increasingly confident and proud to share my views with others.

Aaron’s family and their neighbors had searched for the boy and the goat but had found no trace of them during the storm. Then came the fourth day. Aaron’s mother cried for him; his father remained sad. Suddenly one of the neighbors came running to their house with the news that Aaron and Zlateh were coming up on the road. There was great joy in the family. Aaron told them how he had found the stack of hay and how Zlateh had fed him with her milk. Aaron’s mother kissed and hugged Zlateh and gave her a special treat of chopped carrots and potato peels, which Zlateh gobbled up hungrily. Nobody ever again thought of selling Zlateh. 8.When I brought my payback home — it was $119 — my dad wanted to talk to me. He told me to wait in the living room for a while. Silence reigned in the room. I sat on the sofa, eyes glued to the money I earned. I kept digging in my mind for words to argue with dad if he announced that the money wasn’t mine. Just then, the door opened and in came my dad. The moment he sat down beside me, I gripped the paycheck more firmly, ready to argue. However, he gently placed his right hand on my shoulder and said, “I know you have grown up a lot through your work …” Then there was a long pause. He withdrew his hand and slowly continued, “You deserve the money and the money is yours now.”
I was surprised that my dad allowed to use the money as I wished. In the blink of an eye, numerous fun activities I could do presented themselves to me. I sprang to my feet and kept jumping, still wild with joy and astonishment. On that day, after calculating my budget, I went to the local store and bought many things I wanted — a new football, a baseball bat and a pair of sneakers and so on. Better yet, the idea of giving back to the farmer and working more popped into my mind. At exactly that moment, I realized why my father let me have the money — it was his expectation for my future, his encouragement and quiet love. And that was something I might never surpass.

I knew it was hopeless, but I didn’t want to be rude to a stranger trying to help.
He checked the engine and said, “I know what’s wrong.” The man continued to say, “Lucky for you. I have that tool with me.” He went to fetch the tool and got to repair our strange car, and after several minutes, the engine began to work again. I’ll show them the photos of Kabir’s magical forest! ” Seeing Uncle and Kabir’s encouraging smile, I immediately set down to my work, busily pressing my shutter and capturing the amazing scenes in the forest. When Uncle and I went back to the village several days later and showed these wonderful pictures to my neighbour, they were stunned by the beauty of the forest. “It was the trees that turned the place into a paradise! ” We then explained our tree-planting plan to the villagers, which was quickly accepted by all of them.
In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan. Instead of cutting down our forest, we started to plant trees, which has eventually helped protect the soil and stopped the land from eroding. Thanks to the trees, the water has been purified and we finally have clean and stable water supply. With our joint efforts, our village is now surrounded by small thriving forests with blooming flowers, lively animals and crystal-clear streams running through. Witnessing the gradual change of our village, we came to realize that only when we live in harmony with nature can we have a brighter future.

10.Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too.” Grabbing the camera in my hand, I added with excitement. “I’ve got a plan!
