Glaub and Parker settled in to their new home on 22nd Street, and for the first two years a few letters trickled in from kids or parents asking “Santa” (圣诞老人) for gifts they could not otherwise afford: toys, coats, a doll. Then in the months leading to Christmas 2010, they were deluged. Every day, they’d open their mailbox to find it so full of letters to Santa that they had to empty the mailbox in time for another big bunch of letters. They responded to as many as they could, writing notes, even buying gifts. But they could only do so much.
Glaub of course, is not Santa. He runs a Broadway marketing company. But one night, when he and Parker threw a 1960s-themed Christmas party, a solution appeared. Guests, dressed in mod outfits and hippie beads, noticed the hundreds of letters Glaub and Parker had yet to act upon and asked about them. That’s when Glaub and Parker realized they didn’t have to fulfill all these letters themselves. “People want to help.”
And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street, a community-based volunteer organization that responds to children’s letters to Santa with season’s greetings and gifts for kids. Working with other nonprofits that help those in need, they invited families from around the country to go online and request gifts and Christmas toys for their children.
Letters typically request popular items, but some letters are heartbreaking. One child wrote: “Dear Santa, For Christmas, I want my brothers to get better. My younger brother has a hard time walking and has to use his wheelchair. I wish he could play like me. I also wish my baby brother could eat like me and not have his feeding tube. I know these are not real presents, but this is all I want this year.” That’s a tough ask. But Miracle on 22nd Street did send the children gift cards and a kind note.
Last year, Glaub and Miracle on 22nd Street helped more than 800 families. Glaub no longer dwells on why the letters come to the apartment. Putting in the long hours to help the families is what it’s all about for him. “It wouldn’t be Christmas without it,” he says.
    4. What does the underlined word. mean in paragraph 1?
    A. Wildly varied. B. Genuinely welcomed.
    C. Severely flooded. D. Desperately worn.
    5. What does Glaub and Parker think of their guests in the party?
    A. Attractive. B. Sociable. C. Helpful. D. Tolerant.
    6. What does the volunteer organization do?
    A. Establishing branches across the country. B. Offering Christmas service for free.
    C. Inviting families in need to 22nd Street. D. Selling gifts and Christmas toys online.
    7. Why does Glaub no longer think about the reason for the letters’ coming?
    A. He earns more money in daily work.
    B. He wants to have a happier Christmas.
    C. He is busier in running his marketing company.
    D. He attaches more importance to helping people.
C 5. C 6. B 7. D
根据划线词下文“Every day, they’d open their mailbox to find it so full of letters to Santa that they had to empty the mailbox in time for another big bunch of letters.(每天,他们都会打开邮箱,发现里面塞满了给圣诞老人的信,以至于他们不得不及时清空邮箱,以便收到另一大堆信。)”
根据第二段中“But one night, when he and Parker threw a 1960s-themed Christmas party, a solution appeared. Guests, dressed in mod outfits and hippie beads, noticed the hundreds of letters Glaub and Parker had yet to act upon and asked about them. That’s when Glaub and Parker realized they didn’t have to fulfill all these letters themselves.
根据第三段中“And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street, a community-based volunteer organization that responds to children’s letters to Santa with season’s greetings and gifts for kids. Working with other nonprofits that help those in need, they invited families from around the country to go online and request gifts and Christmas toys for their children.(于是,奇迹在22街诞生了,这是一个以社区为基础的志愿者组织,负责回复孩子们给圣诞老人的信,向孩子们送上节日的问候和礼物。他们与其他帮助有需要的人的非营利组织合作,邀请全国各地的家庭在网上为他们的孩子申请礼物和圣诞玩具。)”可知,该志愿者组织为孩子们和有需要的家庭提供免费圣诞服务。故选B项。
    【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Glaub no longer dwells on why the letters come to the apartment. Putting in the long hours to help the families is what it’s all about for him. “It wouldn’t be Christmas without it,” he says.(格劳布不再关心为什么这些信会寄到他的公寓。对他来说,花大把时间帮助这些家庭就是他的全部。“没有它就不是圣诞节,”他说。)”可推知,对格劳布来说,帮助这些家庭已经成为圣诞节的一部分,至于为什么这些信会寄到他的公寓已经不再重要,所以“他更重视帮助别人。”是他不再考虑信件为什么到来的原因。故选D项。
    C
Sneakers (运动鞋) have come a long way from when they were first invented in 1860s England for the upper-class playing croquet and tennis. But what transformed sneaker culture into a true phenomenon was the 1985 release of Nike’s Air Jordan 1.
In 1984, Michael Jordan was a talented new player who had yet to play in a professional game. Despite that, Nike — better known then as a running shoe company — saw Jordan as the future of their brand. The bet paid off. As Jordan proved to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time, the sneaker’s popularity skyrocketed.
Sneaker culture began to take off beyond the basketball court too. When the influential hip-hop group Run-D. M. C. released their single My Adidas in 1986, it earned the group a first-of-its-kind endorsement (代言) deal with the brand. Soon after, Kurt Cobain of the grunge band Nirvana made Converse a symbol of rebellion and youth.
Meanwhile, another cultural shift was taking place as white-collar businesses introduced casual Fridays. Suddenly, men were allowed to put aside their suits and wear something one day a week that showed people who they really were.
Nowadays, sneakers are also how people express their beliefs — for instance, when NBA player Dwyane Wade wore hiscustom-designed, limited-edition “Black Lives Matter” Li-Nings or NFL placekicker Blair Walsh wore anti-bullying sneakers covered in the words “Speak Out.”
“It’s like art,” says Akio Evans, a Baltimore creative who specializes in turning shoes into wearable artwork. “Even though it is a sneaker that is on the shelves or inside of a box inside a store, the very first thing you are doing is admiring what you see. You look at all the pieces and decide which one appeals to your emotions.”
Decades after their first introduction to the fashion industry, sneakers are finally getting their due as part of our cultural heritage.
    8. How has Michael Jordan affected sneaker culture?
A He is a key figure in its taking over the world.
    B. He played in a professional game in 1984 to start it.
    C. He has created it since he became a talented new player.
    D. He was known for wearing running shoes as advertisement for it.
    9. Why are Adidas and Converse mentioned?
    A. To introduce Run-D. M. C. and Kurt Cobain. B. To prove Nike the best sneaker brand.
    C. To show the popularity of sneaker culture. D. To emphasize rebellion and youth.
    10. What can men do on casual Fridays?
    A. Wearing sneakers. B. Embracing suits.
    C. Stopping work. D. Hiding themselves.
    11. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
    A. Famous athletes express their beliefs on sneakers just for fun.
    B. Artists pay too much attention to turning sneakers into artwork.
    C. Sneakers deserve the admiration and popularity nowadays.
    D. Sneaker culture plays the most important role in fashion industry.
A 9. C 10. A 11. C

根据第三段的内容“Sneaker culture began to take off beyond the basketball court too. When the influential hip-hop group Run-D. M. C. released their single My Adidas in 1986, it earned the group a first-of-its-kind endorsement (代言) deal with the brand. Soon after, Kurt Cobain of the grunge band Nirvana made Converse a symbol of rebellion and youth.”(运动鞋文化也开始在篮球场之外发展起来。
根据第四段“Meanwhile, another cultural shift was taking place as white-collar businesses introduced casual Fridays. Suddenly, men were allowed to put aside their suits and wear something one day a week that showed people who they really were.”(与此同时,另一种文化转变正在发生,白领企业引入了星期五便装日。 故选A项。
根据文章的最后一段“Decades after their first introduction to the fashion industry, sneakers are finally getting their due as part of our cultural heritage.”(在运动鞋首次进入时尚界几十年后,它终于作为我们文化遗产的一部分得到了应有的重视)可以推论出,作者认为运动鞋在当今是应该被推崇和流行的。故选C项。
    D
Researchers have created a noninvasive (无创的) brain decoder that can translate stories heard by participants into a string of text, based on their MRI scans. The team says this technology could one day aid communication in people who are mentally conscious but physically unable to speak, such as stroke patients.
“Compared to what’s been done before using the same noninvasive method, which typically deals with single words or short sentences, this new technology is a real leap forward,” Alex Huth, a professor of neuroscience and computer science at the University of Texas at Austin, says in a statement. “We’re getting the model to decode continuous language for extended periods of time with complicated ideas.”
Huth and his colleagues collected hours of data from three participants listening to the podcasts “Modern Love” and “The Moth Radio Hour” while connected to a functional MRI (fMRI) scanner, which recorded the participants’ blood oxygen levels in parts of their brains. This data was used to train an A. I. model to match specific brain activity patterns with strings of words, the team reports in a new study published Monday in Nature Neuroscience. The decoder used GPT-1, an earlier version of the technology that powers ChatGPT.
When the participants listened to new stories, the tool couldn’t spit back the exact words, but it could convey the main idea. For example, a participant hearing “I don’t have my driver’s license yet” had their thoughts translated to: “She has not even started to learn to drive yet.” The researchers also had participants watch muted animated short films. Though the model was trained only on spoken words, it could still generate a language description of what was happening.
Reading minds raises a multitude of ethical questions about brain privacy, but the researchers say their tool doesn’t work without willing cooperation. “This is all about the user having a new way of communicating, a new tool that is totally in their control,” David Moses, a researcher of automatic speech recognition at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the study, said. “That is the goal, and we have to make sure that stays the goal.”
    12. In what aspect has the new technology made progress?
    A. The age of target users. B. The complexity of listening materials.
    C. The income of research teams. D. The effectiveness of noninvasive methods.
    13. Which of the following generates the translated text?
    A. The researchers. B. A fMR/scanner. C. An A. I. decoder. D. ChatGPT.
    14. What can be the disadvantage of the new technology?
    A. A violation to personal privacy. B. A challenge to traditional culture.
    C. A prejudice against the mentally disabled. D. A barrier against human communication.
    15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
    A. A. I. Helps Stroke Patients to Speak With Computers
    B. A New Technology Makes People Read Others’ Mind
    C. ChatGPT Voices What You think Into a String of words
    D. Researchers Use A. I. to Decode Words From Brain Scans
B 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“Compared to what’s been done before using the same noninvasive method, which typically deals with single words or short sentences, this new technology is a real leap forward,(与之前使用的非侵入性方法只能处理单个单词或短句,与之相比,这项新技术是一个真正的飞跃)”和“We’re getting the model to decode continuous language for extended periods of time with complicated ideas.(我们让这个模型长时间解码连续的,有着复杂思想的语言。)”
根据第三段中“The decoder used GPT-1, an earlier version of the technology that powers ChatGPT.(解码器使用了GPT-1,这是ChatGPT技术的早期版本。)”
根据最后一段中“Reading minds raises a multitude of ethical questions about brain privacy (读心术引发了许多关于大脑隐私的伦理问题)”可知,新技术的缺点是可能会侵犯个人隐私。故选A项。
通读全文,结合根据第一段中“Researchers have created a noninvasive (无创的) brain decoder that can translate stories heard by participants into a string of text, based on their MRI scans.(研究人员发明了一种无创大脑解码器,可以根据参与者的核磁共振扫描结果,将他们听到的故事翻译成一串文本)”和第三段中“Huth and his colleagues collected hours of data from three participants listening to the podcasts “Modern Love” and “The Moth Radio Hour” while connected to a functional MRI (fMRI) scanner, which recorded the participants’ blood oxygen levels in parts of their brains. This data was used to train an A. I. model to match specific brain activity patterns with strings of words, the team reports in a new study published Monday in Nature Neuroscience.(胡特和他的同事们收集了三名参与者听播客“现代爱情”和“飞蛾广播一小时”的数小时数据,并将其连接到功能性核磁共振成像(fMRI)扫描仪上,该扫描仪记录了参与者大脑部分地区的血氧水平。研究小组在周一发表在《自然神经科学》上的一项新研究中报告说,这些数据被用来训练一个人工智能模型,以匹配特定的大脑活动模式和单词串。)”可知,本文报道了研究人员发明了一种使用人工智能来解码核磁共振扫描结果,并将其转化为语言的技术。所以“Researchers Use A. I. to Decode Words From Brain Scans(研究人员使用人工智能从脑部扫描中解码语言)”是文章最佳标题。故选D项。

17-year-old Tammy lives on the Little Acres Farm with her family. In October, they create a successful hay maze (干草堆的迷宫) on the farm and people buy tickets to get in. However, people like to see pumpkins on Halloween, and the farm doesn’t have very good pumpkins.
One morning, Tammy’s father told her, “The Shelby Farm is planning a hay maze this year, which means they are going to compete with us.” “Oh no!” said Tammy, “they’ll take away our business!” “Well, we’ll just have to make ours bigger and better,” Dad suggested. “Tammy, you have good social skills. I need you to go over to the farm and see what they are up to,” Dad said. “Can I trust you to do a good job?” “Of course you can, Dad!” she said. “I’ll find out what’s going on and come back with a full report!”
Early the next morning, Tammy took her bicycle and went to find out information about the Shelby’s plan for the maze. When she got to the farm, Mr. Shelby was staring at piles of hay in front of the barn, looking confused. In his hand was a bright orange pumpkin.
“Hello, Mr. Shelby,” she smiled, “how lovely the pumpkin is!If only our farm had pumpkins like it.” “Thank you, Tammy. I’m glad you like it. Why not take it home as a gift for your family? We got a plentiful harvest of good pumpkins this year.” “Thanks, you are so kind and generous.” When Mr. Shelby handed the pumpkin to Tammy, he sighed, “How I wish my farm had a hay maze as beautiful as the pumpkin.” Looking at the pumpkin in hand and the piles of hay in front of the barn, Tammy had an idea in her mind.

【答案】“I have a great plan,” Tammy said, “which can benefit both farms.” “We can help the Shelby Farm construct their maze,” Tammy said excitedly, “We’ll bring our hay over to help them with theirs! Then the Shelby’s will give us some pumpkins from their bountiful crop to add to our maze. That way, both farms can be successful!” Dad agreed it was a great plan, and the next morning, Tammy rode back to the Shelby Farm to fulfill her plan.
She showed Mr. Shelby the pumpkin and her plan. He was delighted with the proposal and thanked her for her smart thinking. With the help of Little Acres, the Shelby Farm was able to construct an impressive hay maze. Not only did they make a maze, they also shared some of their pumpkins with Little Acres. For the Halloween season, the two farms worked together to create a delightful experience for families. The hay maze was a great success for both farms and it was all thanks to Tammy’s creative solution.
