My father and I were both angry. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted my father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out to the street.
I walked aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me I seemed to see my childhood from another space: happy.
But now ... I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because my dad is getting old. We have different ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I walked in the streets. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the building where I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: “Is my father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, my dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except my father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking me underneath the covers (掖被子) while I am sleeping.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe ... With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that there wasn’t the iron door that I had imagined between us at all. Love — it’s second to none.

The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet
(字母表), it uses characters(汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words
are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can
also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters are still in use today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed.
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced(发音). Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
- The writer introduced the Chinese characters by .
A. giving examples B. providing causes
C. expressing opinions D. comparing(比较) facts
29. The following sentence would best be placed at the beginning of .
Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.
A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 2
30.Which Chinese character used the underlined (下划线的) way?
A. B. C. D.
31.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. The difference between Chinese and Western language
B. How to form Chinese characters
C. The development of Chinese characters
D. The history of the Chinese language

Many countries in the world are now facing major problems related to waste collection, especially in big cities. Technology could play an important role in dealing with these problems, for example, through the development of better tools to gather and collect garbage(垃圾).
With this in mind, researchers at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in India have recently created a cheap and useful system for automatic garbage detection and collection, which they refer to(指的是) as AGDC. Their system uses artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms (计算程序) to detect and locate waste, then picks it up with a robotic arm.
The waste management system is made up of a robotic body and several machine learning algorithms. The system uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detect garbage on the ground. Once it detects a piece of garbage, it works out its position with the help of pictures collected by a camera. Then, another algorithm judges the distance between the robot and the garbage, while also giving instructions for the robot to reach the target location. The position of the garbage and these instructions are then sent to a microcontroller, which controls the robot’s movements. When the robot finally reaches the garbage detected by the CNNs, it uses a robotic arm to collect it and drops it into a container.
The researchers have already developed a prototype(原型) of their waste detection system, which can now collect up to 100-200g of garbage. In their future work, , so that it can collect two to three kilograms of garbage. In addition, the team is thinking of developing and training a new CNN model that would allow AGDC to detect several pieces of garbage at the same time.
- What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
- Reducing waste. B. Dealing with pollution.
C. Using technology to collect waste. D. Making full use of big cities.
33. What are CNNs used to do?
A. Pick up the garbage. B. Detect the garbage.
C. Drop the garbage into a container. D. Control the robot’s movement.
34. How does Paragraph 3 mainly develop?
A. By making a comparison. B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting research findings. D. By showing the process.
35. Which of the following should go in the empty box in Paragraph 4?
A. researchers plan to improve this prototype B. researchers plan to advertise this prototype
C. researchers plan to produce this prototype D. researchers plan to give up this prototype

Have you ever tasted a kind of snack, which is also of the traditional Chinese of forms of art—sugar painting.
Sugar painting started from the Ming Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, many people made a living through sugar painting, setting up stalls(货摊)in crowded streets, in front of theatres and busy public places. And now it can still be found in many areas of China.
The sugar painters usually sit before a wooden table. On the side, there is a wooden plate with a revolvable arrow(可旋转箭头)on it. The plate is painted with different pictures such as a dragon, a bird, a flower and so on. After paying, the customers turn the arrow and wait till it stops. The picture pointed by the arrow is the one the painters will make.
Sugar painting is very different from normal painting. The sugar painters use syrup(糖浆)as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth slab(台面)as the “paper”. To make the syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since the syrup may become solid(固体的)if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of the syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, a flower or a bike is done.
The number of sugar painters is getting smaller. However, some of them still insist on this art. They make their efforts to hold different activities such as offering classes and giving speeches. Now, sugar painting has already been listed as National Non-Material Culture Heritage.

六、 Dear ladies and gentlemen,
As we all know, our hometown Jiangyin has become more and more beautiful than before. However, there are many things we can do to protect the environment and build a green home.
First of all, we can save water by taking shorter showers and turning off the tap when we brush our teeth. Secondly, in order to save power, we should turn off the lights when we leave a room. Then, we are starting to use energy from the sun, wind and water. These new types of energy cost very little and will never run out. If we want to keep our home clean and tidy, we shouldn’t drop litter everywhere. Lastly, the air pollution is a serious problem, too. I call on you and your parents to take the bus more and drive less.
If we try our best to build a green home, our home will become a better place to live in.
That’s all. Thanks a lot for your attention.
