We’ll begin with a gentle climb in this open forest before taking a short downhill walk to the river. You’ll see unusually tall trees in that area and will cross the river on a big piece of wood. Our pass from there will go north. We’ll pass through a forest, then a large field, and cross a stream as we continue our way up to Summit Lake. The lake is small and surrounded with forest, and there’re lots of fish just waiting to be caught. Well stop for lunch at the lake. We’ll have an hour to relax and take photos before we start our return trip on a different path, which will take us past three small lakes before the long, steep hike back down to the river. Our last mile will be another steep uphill climb to the trail’s end, just 100 yards from where we’re about to begin.

(2022春·山东青岛·高一统考期末)As a coder, Nand Vinchhi wanted to invent something that didn’t require a device. He came up with the idea for a platform to translate sign language. “I’ve always been super interested in a better education system for everyone, especially in my country,” he says. “I wanted to do something through technology that would help.”
In just a few months, he developed the artificial-intelligence technology needed to translate American Sign Language (ASL) in real-time. It’s basically a speech-to-text app for sign language. Here, hand movements are the speech.
The hardest part, Nand says, was figuring how to approach the problem. At times, he says, “I didn’t know what to do.” When that happened, he would go to sleep. “In the morning, I tried again.”
Nand Vinchhi demonstrates (演示) how his translation tech works in his bedroom, where he spent long hours constructing the computer program. A camera identifies colorful, key points on arms and hands as they move. An algorithm (计算程序) matches these movements to words in American Sign Language, which are then spoken aloud.
For Nand, “sleeping on it” paid off. He decided to recognize body parts important in signing. This might be individual fingertips, for example. Using a machine-learning program, he then taught a computer to identify those key points in videos he took. The computer would compile (编译) data from many frames of the video. This created a dataset. Nand gathered lots of these datasets and then used an algorithm to look for differences between them. That allowed him to compare a sign to any of some 100 ASL words in that dataset.
His system now translates signs with 90.4 percent accuracy (准确度), he reported at the competition. The delay from signing to translation is only about three-tenths of a second. That’s only a tenth of a second longer than the typical speech delay in video calls. The teen now plans to increase the accuracy and words available in the dataset.
24.Why did Nand develop the system?
A.To show his talent. B.To help others.
C.To win an award. D.To develop his interest.
25.What’s Nand Vinchhi’s invention?
A.A device. B.A language. C.An app. D.An algorithm.
26.What can we learn about Nand’s system?
A.It is already widely used. B.It is exactly in real-time.
C.It is better than video calls. D.It still needs some improvement.
27.What contributes to Nand Vinchhi’s success?
A.His perseverance. B.Help from family.
C.Enough money. D.Rich experience.
24.B 25.C 26.D 27.A

Read Across America Day
Read Across America (RAA) is a day held annually on March 2nd that encourages children in every community to read and also encourages parents and teachers to celebrate the joy of reading. It’s a holiday that has been celebrated since 1998 and falls on the same day as children’s book author Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
This holiday dates back to May of 1997. This is when a small group of people at the National Education Association (NEA) came up with the idea to create a day of the year that celebrates reading among children. They reasoned that since many school football programs could get children engaged in the sport through pep rallies (鼓舞士气的集会), then why couldn’t the same thing be done for reading? So they decided to turn to a Read Across America program that was officially launched on March 2, 1998, and ever since it has continued to grow in size. Today, more than 50 national nonprofit and association sponsors (资助者) and more than 3. 3 million NEA members support the effort every year.
This holiday is celebrated in numerous ways. All over the country, libraries, schools and community centers hold special Read Across America events that promote reading in their communities. Teachers also develop special events on this day to encourage their students to read. The NEA also sponsors reading round tables and has an online store that allows people to buy everything they need for their RAA celebrations. This includes Dr. Seuss hats, RAA bookmarks, special RAA flash drives and even RAA mugs.
While recommended student reading lists vary from community to community, there are some books that always seem to pop up. Below is a partial(部分的) list of some of the books read by elementary, middle school and high school students.
28.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Parents in America like reading. B.RAA has a history of over 50 years.
C.Teachers are popular with children. D.Dr. Seuss was born on March 2nd.
29.What inspired NEA to come up with RAA?
A.School football programs’ practice. B.Millions of NEA members’ support.
C.The NEA members’ love for reading. D.American local official’s encouragement.
30.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The special events for reading activities. B.The celebration of Read Across America.
C.The encouragement of community centers. D.The children’s devotion to reading activities.
31.What may be talked about following the last paragraph?
A.The promising future of RAA. B.The awards given to the children.
C.Student reading list recommended. D.Parents and teachers’ praise for the program.

36.【C】设空处位于段末,上文主要讲了印度洋发生的海啸造成了重大损失,下文第二段首句“Yet in the minutes and hours before the walls of water up to 9m high went through coastlines, some animals seemed to sense the coming danger and make efforts to flee.” C项“Local manmade early warning systems failed to raise any clear alarm.(当地的人工预警系统未能发出清晰的警报。)”
37.【A】上文“Elephants ran for higher ground, and chickens abandoned low-lying nesting areas.”提到了大象和鸡在灾难发生前的反应;下文“These accounts about animal behavior before disasters have inspired some researchers to devote serious scientific attention to the theory that animals may have inbuilt systems which can predict the upcoming natural disasters.” A项“Even dogs refused to go outdoors.(就连狗也不愿出门。)” 故选A项。
38.【E】上文“The researchers found evidence that the farm animals began to change their behavior up to 20 hours before an earthquake.” 下文“Just two weeks before the earthquake, a series of strong perturbations (扰动) happened in local atmospheric electric charges every two to four minutes.” E项“And scientists also found what might lead to the changes in local animal behavior.(科学家们还发现了可能导致当地动物行为变化的原因。)”中的“And scientists also found”与上文“scientists found”对应,“what might lead to the changes”与下文的内容对应。故选E项。
39.【B】上文“China has already created a Quake Alert system in Nanning, monitoring the behavior of animals much closer to the ground – specifically, snakes.”提到了中国建立了地震预警系统,监测动物,尤其是蛇的行为;下文“When an earthquake is about to occur, snakes will move out of their nests, even in winter.” B项“Snakes are perhaps the most sensitive creatures to earthquakes.(蛇可能是对地震最敏感的生物。)”
下文“And even if they do help, animal movements alone are unlikely to be enough to provide. People will need to rely on a combination of early warning signals to get the full picture.” G项“Not all experts think that animal early warning systems are a reliable option for predicting disasters.(并非所有专家都认为动物早期预警系统是预测灾害的可靠选择)”恰好与下文具体内容对应。

Ever since Arick Baker was a kid, his father had warned him: “If you go down in the corn, you don’t come out.”
The tall grain bins store enough dried corn to swallow up a body completely, squeezing the breath and life from a person in seconds. Accidents happen, and they’re often deadly. 26 have been killed in the accidents ever since, and the firefighters responsible for it never had luck rescuing anyone.
However, the 23-year-old Baker wasn’t thinking about the risks. With his dad, Rick, getting older, Baker was increasingly responsible for the farm’s most unpleasant tasks of cleaning inside the tall grain bins, which usually took two days to finish due to its height and size.
That morning, Baker stood right in the grain bin, trying to clean up the bottom, while his father was out helping to transfer truckloads of corn from inside. It was a sweating day, and it was 58℃ inside the bin. Baker was wearing a mask to keep away from all the dust kicked up while working.
Around 10:30 that morning, Baker’s dad left his spot on the roof, where he had kept an eye on his son, and then he drove away the last pile of corn. But just seconds later, Baker felt a roaring storm of corn coming from above. It was another driver unloading corn into the grain bin, and he was quickly stuck firm in the corn before he could even react. “Help!” Baker yelled once, but darkness and silence set in, and he was down in the corn.
Awful to feel himself squeezed, Baker tried to move his leg a few centimeters, but the corn would rush back in to fill the blank, packing him even tighter. Every breath was exhausting, and after about two hours of helplessness, he was wondering how long he could still last.
The truth was, just moments after he drove away, Baker’s father had left his son a phone message: “Hey, Arick. Like a fool, I forgot to wait to make sure you got out OK. Give me a call when you got this.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
But two hours later, when he still didn’t get a reply, Baker’s dad became worried.______________

Knowing Baker was still alive from his voice below encouraged firefighters to dig further._________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But two hours later, when he still didn’t get a reply, Baker’s dad became worried. He personally stood around the grain bin to check on his son, but there was no sign of him. That’s when he turned to the local firefighters for help. The moment the Fire Department arrived, the firefighters lowered themselves into the grain bin, searching through the corn before radioing back the bad news: “If the kid’s in here, he must have been dead.” Hardly had this message been conveyed when a yell was heard from down in the corn directly beneath their feet: “I’m alive! I’m alive!” Apparently, it was Baker’s voice that was spread upwards and received by the firefighters.
Knowing Baker was still alive from his voice below encouraged firefighters to dig further. Following the sound and digging like dogs, they were desperate to grab his hand. The digging at first, however, was slow, and Baker’s, as well as the firefighters’ delight gradually began to fade, with many times of successful attempts crushed by the falling corn. Yet the more the corn was cleared with cooperative efforts, the more Baker got close to the rescue, and finally it was late afternoon when Baker was sent to the hospital for thorough check. From then on, never will he forget this awful helplessness down in the corn, and nor will his father forget to remind him to come out for every chance of working.
