As an enthusiastic climber, I would make an annual trip to the peak of Mount of the Holy Cross. This year, my new running partner, Merle—a young and athletic dog—would climb with me. I hadn’t thought twice about taking Merle; actually, I’d expected him to beat me to the peak.
Before setting off, I filled my pack with water bottles, dry food, and a can of fish. Having put the collar—with his name and my phone numbers—on Merle, I started my big adventure with him. Several hours later, when we were rushing towards the peak, Merle still seemed energetic and I also felt energized by the clear mountain air.
When reaching the peak, I heard a short bark but thought Merle would be seconds behind me. He was always incredibly bonded to me. I shot a photo of the view, called out to the dog and headed back down the trail. However, Merle was nowhere to be seen.
“Merle! Merle!” I called. “Where are you?” I felt a tickle of panic in my throat as I still saw no signs of him.
Then I saw something moving in the basin below. It was Merle! After nearly an hour, I made it to the basin and saw Merle standing on a large rock. Relief washed over me. Soon, I was close enough to see that he looked oddly swollen and was badly injured. When I got within a few feet of him, he dived into a crack at the edge of a field of rocks.
I immediately struggled to clear snow and rocks, but could only stick my head in the crack. Peering into the darkness, I just heard the rings of Merle’s collar. I yelled. No response. Then I went to the scene of the fall and saw the path Merle had taken: He’d slid some 700 feet down the upper snowfield, fallen off a 40-foot cliff, and then rolled down another 100-foot cliff to the lower snowfield.
“It’s typical of a dog in great pain to hide, who is on the edge of dying.” My vet’s words flashed across my mind.

Mash Assadollat was the grocer at our corner store. Standing behind his glass display case, he tore out some pages from a book, filled them with sugar cubes and tea and weighed them one by one on a brass tray (托盘) on the left side of his scale. Then, he folded the wrappers closed and handed it to me. I paid him and left. I got home, took the goods and emptied the wrappers.
Having not much to do in my summer vacation, I started to read the wrappers, which had once been pages of a book. How well written and attractive the words were! It was a good story. I sat there until I had read all the pages. Honestly, I had never read a book before, except for my textbooks. But when I read all eight pages, I realized that how I loved reading. The only problem was that the story stopped right at the best part, which was the most important and exciting part in the story.
I decided to get the rest of the book to satisfy my curiosity. I ran to the corner. “Hello, sir.” I gasped breathlessly. I tried speaking politely. “Where is the rest of that book? Could you please kindly give it to me? I’ll read it and bring it right back to you.” “What book? I don’t have any books in my shop.” Mash Assadollat furled his eyebrows and asked.
I tried to be convincing. “The one that you tore pages from and then used the pages to wrap sugar cubes and tea! Please, I beg you to tell me what you did with that book!” The old man frowned in surprise and disbelief. “What do you want with the rest of the book?” “Sir, I just want to see what happens in the end.”
To butter him up, I removed one of the trays of his scale, brushed the sugar off outside by the wall, wiped the tray really well with my right sleeve, and then put it back in its place. However, Mash Assadollah brushed me off lightly. “Go away, kid, and let me get back to work. That book is no good for you.”

    3.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I had passed the higher secondary examination when I had to give up a further student. I had to be earning something to help the family budget. I scanned the “wanted columns of newspapers” and put them in applications. One day a letter came to me from an office; I was asked to prepare for an interview on a particular date just at 10 a.m. I was both happy and nervous; I was the only teen. However, I had asked for it, and so I must go.
On that particular morning, I got ready. I put on the best clothes. They were not showy, but they were clean and decent. I took particular care to clean and polish my pair of shoes. Knowing the difficulties of transport, I started with plenty of time on hand.
I reached the office before the appointed time. I went up to the manager’s room and showed my letter to the bearer. He took the letter and asked me to wait in a room nearby. I found there others waiting. One of them was particularly well-dressed. He was quite at ease and it seemed hard for him to notice us. The others were like me, nervous and anxious to get the thing over. Two others came in but I was so very ill at ease that I could only glance at them.
Just at ten, the smart one was called in. He went smartly enough but his shoes creaked, which was not very pleasant. He was so much in haste that he tripped a little on the doormat and therefore shot into the room rather than made a decent entry. My turn came third. I was trembling. I went quietly and entered closing the door carefully behind me. I made a bow and advanced. The manager asked me to be seated. He took out my application and asked me why I was giving up my studies. I explained my family circumstances. All the time I was speaking, he took me in from top to bottom. He remarked that I seemed to be too young for the job. I said that I was willing to learn and to work as hard as possible.

When I was a kid about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles(雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was overwhelmed. Apparently my mother was too, because sometimes she’d look at me and shake her head.
I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds because she had a flawless peaches-and-cream complexion (肤色). I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.
And then, in the back pages of Janette Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would work well. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day precisely at the time the mail was delivered. I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.
Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my body. Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that even my face started to bum. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before.” When I saw myself in the mirror, I found my freckles even darker and clearer. I dissolved into tears and hid in the bathroom.

I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to read the paper. From somewhere, an inner voice said, “Go see Jeff and bring him the chair to repair. Go right now.”
It was such a strong need that I hurriedly dressed and carried a dining-room chair to his door. Jeff was a neighbor who had lost his wife a while back, and he sometimes did minor repairs for me because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while. I was about to walk away when he answered. He looked like he was far away in his thoughts. I felt awkward about upsetting him so early. I greeted him and then asked if he could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his living room. He looked very sad and not his usual self. He said he had had a stroke recently, and while he was home now, he still needed to attend physical treatment. He had to build his strength back up. I apologized for the chair and told him I would just bring it back home. He said to leave it.
We talked for a while. He said that, before I arrived, he was seriously sad. So, my visit stopped his darkness. I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed and how much worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we talked, the more I saw his mood (情绪)lighten.
After I left his home, I went to the supermarket and gathered ingredients (材料). I made him a hot meal I thought he would like. Carefully, I cut up vegetables and prepared stew (炖菜)for him. I believe it was the best stew I ever made. I made homemade biscuits and prepared fresh fruit for dessert. I realize there might have been healthier food, but I thought a hot meal would lift his spirits. I dropped it off for him. He was glad that someone cared. Emotionally, he seemed in a better place.

    The Other Shoe
    Shoes are made for walking.
But Aamir, a homeless Indian boy, doubted it. Wandering the noisy railway platform, he found one of his flip-flops (人字拖鞋) broken again. He hurried to a corner, sat down and tried to fix it, his bare foot pressing awkwardly against the ground. However, it was beyond repair.
He gave up and looked around aimlessly, staring at people’s shoes. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to two boyish legs wearing flawlessly white socks and equally perfect black leather shoes, which were glittering in the mid-day sun. It was a boy of his age. He couldn’t treasure his possession too much, obviously, because every ten seconds, he stopped, bent down and carefully wiped a dust or two from his shoes. His father was constantly glancing over and urging him, “ Hurry up! The train is coming! ”
Aamir’s eyes followed the father and son, but mostly the leather shoes, as if enchanted (被施魔法的). Imagining himself wearing them, the comfort from the good leather, the jaw-dropping look on his friends’ faces, he couldn’t help cracking a big smile.
The bell of the train drew him back; the fancy-shoe boy and his father were about to get aboard. They tried to crowd into the doorway. However, the instant the boy entered the compartment (车厢), one of his shoes fell off and before he could pick it up, the train began to pull away.
The shoe was now lying alone on the platform. Aamir’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like an arrow, he shot for the shoe and then picked it up, holding it with both hands as if holding the Queen’s crown. After a few seconds of hesitating and looking from the shoe to the train and back, he began racing — with only one good shoe, his flip-flop.
He held the leather shoe up, trying to pass it to the boy through the window, who was desperately reaching out his hand as well. However, it was never close enough.

Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “ You see I am here for the lamb, ” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother’s side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie! ” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours! ” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated (咩咩叫) very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Please tell your boy to stop a moment, ” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

    8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段话,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.
In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck (啄) on your fingers.
On Dad’s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each fatuity was waiting at their mailbox to appreciate him for his friendship and his years of service. “Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route,” he used to say, and a story at every one. One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. He once lectured me that to bring everyone plain pleasure is his greatest pleasure, which has clung to me so far.
Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps.
With a heavy heart, I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad’s death, and the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn’t the case.
As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: Santa Claus, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes. I was among the kids whose letters were always answered in time.
I made a turn at the corner and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad’s postmaster and great friend for many years. Threads of silver ran through his beard and the hair. Obviously, time and sorrow for the past days ploughed deep wrinkles on his brow. Sitting down at the table, he began to tell old stories.

I was in my room, unwilling to perform on the stage of community with “my brother” Bob. He was just adopted by my parents recently.
“Grave, come here,” my mum called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Bob’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Bob came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Bob was sealing my moth’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Bob was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Bob walked ahead of us to the car, my mum took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Bob to be on stage. Be kind to him, Honey.” l nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Bob moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. ‘
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Bob for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

    10.阅读下面短文,根据情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
As mountains go, 1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn’t particularly impressive. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming pleased among its steep, slippery cliffs, resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, aged 18, a freshman at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak’s record. As such, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the views; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking (瞥见) over the lip of the cliff with her husband.
When Grant’s mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard a “tumbling, a thump, and another thump,” he told the Cornell Daily Sun. Then he heard something chilling: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled desperately. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She’d fallen off the side of the mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant told his mother, “I hate to say this, but they’re probably going to find a body.”
Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the trail (小道). But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. “My young brain was like, ‘I can do it,’” he says. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, he followed the trail alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
After 15 minutes of climbing over rocks, pushing past stinging brush, and slipping down pieces of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled (摺皱的) in a kneeling position on a small rocky outcropping (露出地面的岩层). The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Unbelievably she was alive.
“Paula!” Grant shouted. “Paula. Is that you?” Barely responded, she was clearly hurt.

    1.参考范文一
I returned to the crack and called his name again. Still no response. I opened the can of fish and left them as a lure at the mouth of the crack, but in vain. Inside, it smelled wet, just like death. I spent another hour crouching outside the cave, until the jingle of the collar and Merle’s deep breathing stopped. My possible carelessness gnawed at me. But worried about losing daylight, I packed up, crossed the basin and found my way home.
Three weeks later; I received a call claiming to have found Merle. I couldn’t believe my ears. I immediately charged into the car to pick him up. When I heard the familiar bark, I knew that my “lost” friend was back! I collapsed to the floor as soon as I saw him, gently stroking his skinny body. He lowered his ears, tucked in his tail, and wiggled onto my lap. Over the next week, Merle recovered beautifully. I now fully believe in that we are incredibly bonded to each other.
    参考范文二
I returned to the crack and called his name again. Still, desperate silence! Overwhelmed with great panic, I tried frantically to find a way down to the crack. But no luck. What’s worse, the sun was setting, and I was not prepared to spend the night outside. If only I hadn’t taken Merle with me! Realizing however hard I tried, I would never make it, I had to give up. Before leaving, I left the fish at the mouth of the crack, hoping Merle would survive.
Three weeks later; I received a call claiming to have found Merle. It was from a local vet, who accidentally noticed Merle in the mountain and found it had a collar on. Excitement washing over me, I immediately set off for the reunion with Merle. When I arrived, the vet expressed his surprise that Merle should survive in such great pain. Stroking his bony body, I knew that it was the bond between Merle and me that brought my friend back.

Would you care to join us on the condition?” I replied that I was young and a novice and I couldn’t expect anything better. But if I failed, it would not be due to any lack of willingness on my part.

It was my first interview, and I knew it would not be the last. So I was not very much excited. On the contrary, I felt easy that I had gone through it and got some experience. When she came to the bathroom door and demanded that I come out and have a meal, I burst out of the door, tears streaming down my cheeks. Before she stopped me, I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut behind me. Looking into the mirror, I saw a girl with more and darker freckles on the face instead of peaches-and-cream complexion. Only then did I realize that the cream had a reverse effect when wearing it in the sun. I threw myself down on the bed and sobbed.
After what seemed a century, I heard a gentle knock on my bedroom’s door. Hesitating for a moment, with puffy eyes and still wet cheeks, I shuffled across the room to open the door. At the door stood my mother and Janette with a big bunch of tiger lilies, which were covered with black spots but amazingly beautiful. I stared at them in stunned surprise, not knowing what to say. My mother held me in her warm embrace. “There are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful and sweet,” said she. Hearing this, and smelling the fragrance of the tiger lilies, the freckles on my face seemed to have magically faded.

The shoe brushed past the window frame and fell on the platform, like a dead leaf. How could I have failed? Aamir was frustrated beyond words, throwing his hands in the air in dismay. He hated this train which was always late but sped up so abruptly this time. He hated his shabby flip-flops, which always prevented him from walking fast. Are shoes really made for walking? It seemed like his could only cause him trouble. He slouched on the platform, cursing the train, his shoes, his legs, everything.
But when he raised his head, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window. Miraculously, it landed on the platform several steps away from him. Before he could look up again and seek out the fancy-shoe boy, the train sped on, vanishing in the distance. What remained in sight was the meandering rail track and the rolling mountains far away. We would rather go hungry than lose her! ” Hearing this, Mrs. Grant was in great sorrow, her heart bleeding. After all, she clearly knew that the children had devoted so much love to Daisy and that Daisy was more than a pet lamb to them; she was, in their eyes, a family member! Having struggled hard, she turned to the butcher and decided that she would not sell Daisy and would return the money.

The Butcher, who had been watching all, was touched in his heart. When Mrs. Grant took out the money and gave it back, he just waved his hand and announced, “ I will not rob the children of their pet! ” He approached the children, patted them on the shoulders gently and promised that he would buy Daisy from their mother and then gave it back to them as a gift. The word left the children standing stunned. Then, looking up at him, one asked seriously, “Sir, do you really mean that?” The butcher just replied seriously, “ I mean every word of it. She is OUR Daisy. My boy and I will come to see her occasionally. ” Hearing this, all the children gathered round and stroked the pet, their little hearts filled with joy.

8.At one point Frank looked at me with tears in his eyes as if recalling something. Hardly had the words telling my father was genuinely the Santa Claus escaped from his trembling lips when my emphasizing look changed into an astonished one. Flakes were still whirling while a sparkle of light zigzagged across the sky, casting warmth onto my heart. Frank’s stories went on and notably conveyed in his tone was pursuit for the gone era. “Your father always considered others’ pleasure as his own,” Frank’s remark occurred to me like a clap of thunder, planting a seed of dedication rooted in my heart.
Thinking of my father’s philosophy of pleasure, I resolved to be this year’s Santa Claus. Enduring the needle-like wind howling ruthlessly, I made my way to the lamp poles, carefully fumbling for the old letters. Mature as the previous kids were now, I still put pen to paper to respond the innocence with the signature of Santa Claus. When I brought every letter to every original address, the owners’ eyebrows lifted high but then soothed as I explained to them. Spotting the pleased looks on their faces, I felt a surge of warmth circulating through my body. After waving them farewell, I slackened my steps in the snow and wandered around the familiar road, lost in thought of the past golden days that would never fade away.

9.Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.
