Maggie and Alex live in a tall building in a neighborhood in the center of the city. There are no trees near their building, but they are happy in their home and it is close to their jobs.
In the part of the city where they live, there is not much fresh food to buy. The stores only have processed foods in packages. Maggie and Alex and all the other people in the building have to eat food that they buy in boxes and plastic containers.
This makes so much garbage that no one knows where to put it. While they wait for Fridays, when the city collects the garbage, all the neighbors put their trash into bags and sometimes leave it in the hallway or on the big, sunny roof. The whole building looks terrible. No one can spend time playing on the roof because it is full of trash.
One day, Maggie and Alex decide to make a change. They go up to the roof and separate all the recycla-ble garbage, like cardboard, plastic bottles, glass, and aluminum cans. Then they take all of the garbage down to the street for the garbage collectors.
But they do not carry down the plastic bottles! They cut off the tops and use them as pots to plant tomatoes and carrots. They plant herbs, too.

Bill grew up poor and worked hard over the years. Eventually, he created his own repair company and made a fortune. Though rich, he treated people kindly and would handle matters on his own. He had already joined his work team many times to repair water pipes, so he was also an expert when it came to repair work.
One day, he had just finished a meeting at the office and was about to go to lunch when he received a call from a woman saying that the water pipe in her house was broken and needed urgent repair. However, all the repair employees were sent out. He decided to take on the job himself. After changing into his repair clothes, Bill hurriedly drove to where the woman lived.
On the way, he came across a snack bar. Hungry, he decided to buy something to eat. Unfortunately, the line was too long and he was stuck in the long queue. He had no other choice but to wait patiently. Finally, it was Bill’s turn. Meanwhile a lot of people in line behind him were waiting anxiously Just then, a flamboyantly(华丽地) dressed lady suddenly appeared and intervened before Bill. Bill smiled and said, “Sorry, ma’am, you’re jumping in line.” The lady looked at Bill with an arrogant(傲慢的) attitude saying, “So what? I’m in a hurry.” Bill gently replied, “I’m in a hurry too.” The lady looked at the plainly dressed Bill and said angrily, “My time is more valuable than yours. You just have to be patient.” Hearing the lady’s rude words, Bill told her politely that he had a job on the clock and couldn’t waste any more time. But the lady yelled, “You can wait. Besides, your job doesn’t look very important!”, surveying Bill from head to toe,

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Little Tom was a student in senior high school. He was not good at his work and failed many times in the exams, and he never knew why he couldn’t catch up with others.
One day, Tom and his teacher were walking through the forest. He was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest. He asked his teacher, “Why most people’s minds are restless, and only a few have a calm mind? What can one do to calm the mind down?”
The teacher looked at Tom, smiled and told him a story:
On one beautiful day, an elephant was standing by the shade of a tree, eating its leaves. Suddenly, a small fly came buzzingly and landed on the elephant’s ear. The elephant stayed calm and continued eating, ignoring the fly. The fly flew around the elephant’s ear, buzzing noisily, yet the elephant seemed to be unaffected. This confused the fly, and it asked, “Are you deaf?”
“No!” the elephant answered.
“Why aren’t you bothered by my buzz?” the fly asked.
“Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can’t you stay calm just for a few moments?” asked the elephant, and peacefully continued eating the leaves.
The fly answered, “Everything I see, hear and feel attracts my attention, and all noises and movements around me affect my behavior.”
“What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still, while I am buzzing around your ears?”
“I can continue eating peacefully, because my five senses do not disturb my peace.”
“How is it possible?” asked the fly amazed and confused.
“Because I don’t let them rule my attention,” answered the elephant.
“I am in control of my mind and my thoughts, and therefore, I can direct my attention where I want, and ignore any disturbance including your buzz.”
“And therefore,” continued the elephant, “I am completely lost in the act of eating, enjoying my food and chewing it peacefully.”

Strange Footprints in the Snow
Tom woke up and looked around. For a moment, he wasn’t sure where he was. Then he remembered. He and his sister, Lucy, were visiting Aunt Gwen. Yesterday they spent seven hours helping Aunt Gwen clean her basement. Today they would have time to play.
He looked out of the window. Fresh snow covered the ground. He could hardly wait to go outside. Tom got dressed and hurried downstairs to the kitchen.
“Hi, sleepyhead(贪睡者),” said Aunt Gwen. “Lucy has already eaten her breakfast. She’s outside.”
“That’s where I’m going as soon as I finish breakfast,” Tom said.
A short time later, he zipped up(拉上拉链)his coat, put on his boots, and walked out of the front door. The sun made the snow sparkle. He looked around. He didn’t see his sister, but he saw something else. There were strange footprints left in the snow across Aunt Gwen’s yard.
“They’re far too big to be Lucy’s. They look like they belong to a dinosaur,” Tom said. Then he added, “But that’s silly. Dinosaurs are not around anymore.”
He looked closer: The footprints were the shape of a very large oval(椭圆)with a stem. “Maybe they belong to an elephant or a hippo that escaped from the zoo,” he thought. He held his breath and listened. He didn’t hear anything.
He remembered a book he’d seen earlier on Aunt Gwen’s shelf. It was a book about animal tracks. He dashed inside to get it. The book had pictures of animals and the tracks they made. He turned the pages one by one, but none of the photos looked like the footprints in Aunt Gwen’s yard.
He stared at those footprints again. An animal that made such big tracks would have to be heavy. Its tracks should sink far down into the snow. Yet these footprints seemed to skim across(掠过)the top.
How can that be? He wondered.
Tom noticed something else. The tracks never left Aunt Gwen’s yard. Instead, they turned and went around the house. “Maybe the animal is still here,” he whispered.

Daniela Has Changed
“Mom, I’m sick and tired of your asking about me!” Daniela shouted. “You have to understand that I’m no longer a kid! I have every right to do whatever I wish only if I don’t bring people trouble. Mom, I want to let you know this!”
“Daniela, what has come over you?!” Frances questioned angrily at her daughter’s strange behavior. “I’m surprised at what you’ve just told me! Let me know who is the force behind this silly attitude of yours. Your friends with bad habits? I guess it may be! Your dad and I, my sweetheart, have always wanted the best for you but here you’re trying to tell me how grown you are!”
“Yes, I want you to know that I’m grown-up now! Mom, I’m fifteen! I know what’s good for me and what’s not! Tara is just a year older than I am but she does what she likes in her home! But here I am, at my age, being asked of where I have been and am going, whom I am hanging out with and all those! Mom, you know what? I’m tired of all these!” Daniela said.
“Don’t be childish, Daniela!” Mom advised, wanting to take hold of her shoulders. “Tara isn’t my daughter and my daughter isn’t Tara! I want you to understand that her family and ours are quite different in all areas. I don’t want to draw any comparison between us now! You’ve always been a good girl, Daniela! Why this sudden change of character in the last few days?!” “Mom, if you really care to know, that’s none of your business! Feel free to let dad know what took place when he comes back from work! 7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For my fourteenth birthday, my mom offered to take me and my several friends to the city nearest our small town to visit a mall, go shopping, eat pizza in the food court, and then catch a movie. Afterward, we would all return to my house for a party. It was just the kind of celebration that a teenage girl expected.
When it was time to climb aboard the bus and ride together to my home out in the country, Nora didn’t show up. I felt confused. Then I felt mad. Why didn’t she tell me she couldn’t make it? Why would she tell me she’d come to the party and then back out without letting me know? I decided to call Nora and get some answers.
Nora explained that she’d had to stay home from school because she had gotten sick. She couldn’t ride the bus home with me and my other friends or join us at the shopping mall for food-court pizza and a movie because she had been too sick to come to school.
Nora began crying on the phone, hurt and surprised that I was angry with her. Moments later, her mother called back. Angrily, she told me how much I’d hurt her daughter, how much Nora had wanted to join us, and that she had been the one to change Nora’s plans when she didn’t allow her to go to school sick that day.
I seldom gave Nora or her absence from our festivities another thought. At school on Monday, I found it easy to avoid her since she and I had no classes together. For the rest of the school year, we seldom spoke, and I forgot about my hurtful call with Nora as time went by.
The next year I started at the high school, with twice as many students as my middle school. I made some new friends and kept some old ones. Maybe I glanced at Nora with a small smile once in a while as we passed in the halls, but our friendship had been relegated (使降级) to the past. It happened sometimes, and I shrugged it off (不予理睬).

Heiss, 61, and his wife lost their only child, a son. They had no grandchildren. Being around children at Christmas had been absent in their lives.
On December 12, Heiss was hiking there mote expanse of land behind his farm in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the US-Mexico border, when he spotted a balloon on the grass. Heiss walked towards it with his dog, thinking he should pick up the plastic and throw it away. That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper.
“Dayami”, it read on one side, in a child’s writing, and a hand-drawn bow accompanied the word. Heiss turned over the paper. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish. Though he wasn’t good at Spanish, Heiss could see it was Christmas list. Heiss was attracted and suspected that a child named Dayami had tried to sent Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, which he used to do himself when he was a kid. Unfortunately, nobody had ever returned the letters he had sent.
Heiss wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this paper. It would be difficult, but he had a few clues. About 32 kilometers to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. With the help of wind, Heiss was pretty sure the balloon came from the southwest city, Nogales.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife who was fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayani, probably a girl, had asked for dolls, clothes and art supplies, among other things. Heiss then post on Facebook about his search, attracting photos, hoping people in Nogalesmight know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no leads. Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas.
On December 19, Heiss sent a private Facebook message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales. The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio XENY. They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl, and her family, who indeed lived in Nogales. Best of all, they were willing to meet at the radio station.

Meggie was a babysitter for Mrs. Quinn. The house was at the end of a road, and the yard was filled with so many trees that she couldn’t see any of the neighbors’ houses. She always felt slightly frightened when she was left alone with the babies.
One snowy evening, Meggie was watching an old movie on the sofa after the babies had fallen asleep. Around nine o’clock, she heard a car on the driveway. Then she heard a loud knock on the door.
“Who is it?” she asked after she looked through the hole on the door and saw a middle-aged man standing in the entryway. “Ben. Your brother.”
Assuming that the man had mistaken her for her employer, Mrs. Quinn, Meggie replied, “Mrs. Quinn can’t come to the door right now.”
“Ask if Ben can come in.”
Meggie’s mother had always warned her: Never open the door for a stranger while you’re babysitting.
“Go over to the window,” Meggie said.
The man stepped forward.
“The truth is that I’m babysitting,” Meggie said through the screen. Then remembering her mother’s second warning: Don’t advertise that you are alone. Meggie quickly added, “Mrs. Quinn will be home soon.”
“It’s awfully cold out here. Can I wait inside?” the man said, rubbing his hands together. “Please let me in. I promise I won’t bother you.”
“But Mrs. Quinn hadn’t said anything about your dropping by tonight.” Meggie explained. “How can I be sure that you are telling the truth?”
“That’s because she didn’t know I was coming. I was planning to surprise her on her birthday.”
Her birthday? But Meggie hadn’t seen any birthday cards lying around. Her heart raced. She remembered the emergency number Mrs. Quinn left her, so she said, “I’ll call her and see what she will say.”
The smile disappeared from the man’s face. “You’re going to leave me outside to freeze to death? Let me in now!” the man threatened. “Or you’ll be in big trouble!”

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Andy and Eric were two friends who often played together. One day, on their way back home from school, they rode slowly, talking about the fishing trip that they had planned for the coming summer vacation. While turning a corner, Andy cried out, “A fight near the lake! Let’s go to watch!”
“No,” said Eric. “Let’s go home and not get involved in their quarrel. Stay away from it, or we may get into trouble. What’s more, our parents are waiting for us at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (胆小鬼).” Andy laughed at him. Eric was a little annoyed, but he didn’t say anything, just riding home directly. The next day, he went to school as usual.
However, Andy had told all the class that Eric was too timid to do anything brave. So the whole class laughed at him a lot. And from then on, they looked down on Eric, unwilling to play with him. Eric was very sad but he didn’t blame Andy for his being rude to him, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Therefore, he ignored their teasing, studying even harder. What was different was that he had to go home alone.
Several days later, Andy together with his new friends was riding home. They were so absorbed in their conversation that they were unaware of everything else around them.
Suddenly, Andy noticed an unusual buzz of noise. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the noisy mass seemed to be heading angrily towards them.
“Bees!” someone shouted. The boys were caught in great panic. All of them except Andy rode as fast as possible to escape. Andy was too scared to move.

1.Paragraph 1:
Maggie and Alex tell their neighbors about their project. Their neighbors get very excited. Whenever they have free time after work or on the weekends, all the neighbors go up to the roof. They enjoy the sun and help take care of the plants in the garden. They all cooperate, and by working together, they soon have a big, beautiful vegetable garden!
Paragraph 2:
Now the roof looks beautiful like a garden. They spend time in their community garden, enjoy the sun, and create much less garbage. In fact, they even save money because they do not have to buy so much packaged food. The garden is a real success, and the building in the center of the city is a much nicer place to live because of it. All of the neighbors safeguard their environment and improve it for themselves and for each other.

And that is true!” Tom then laughed, “No wonder I couldn’t find those footprints in Aunt Gwen’s book.” There was no page for a snowshoeing sister.

7.One possible version:
Years later, Facebook suggested Nora as an online friend for our similarities. So, I reached out and sent the friend request. Nora accepted. After a year or so of polite online interactions, I began to reflect on that ugly phone conversation I’d initiated with Nora all those years before. Now, I regretted it deeply. I recognized how selfish, self-centered, and self-absorbed I’d been. I didn’t even give her a chance to talk with me, and I didn’t think about how disappointed she must have been, or even ask how she was feeling.
I wrote an apology letter to Nora. I wondered if Nora would even remember the incident. But only a few days later, she responded with a message of her own—one of heartfelt receptivity and forgiveness. She told me how she’d missed me after that ill-fated birthday celebration weekend and wanted to stay friends with me. I expressed my regret that the opportunity had been wasted—all because of that one phone call and how I’d handled it.

Sending a letter to Santa by balloon really does work!” Her parents also expressed appreciation to the Heisses and even exchanged contact details with them.
On December 24, the Heisses were decorating the Christmas tree when they heard a knock on the door. Opening the door, Heiss got a big surprise—It was Dayami and her parents. They explained that they came to celebrate Christmas with the old couple. Dayami gave Heiss a well wrapped box, saying in a loud voice, “Mr Heiss, Merry Christmas! It’s a gift for you.” Overwhelmingly moved, Heiss scooped up the little girl, tears rolling down his cheeks. His wife said emotionally, “Quite appealing for us. After that, he shouted to Andy, “This way! There is a lake ahead!” With no time to waste, they rode furiously in the direction of the lake, the crazy bees following them. Finally, they made it to the lake. Off their bikes and into the cool water they lived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding their breath for as long as they could, they came up for air and noticed the bees had gone.
Dragging themselves out of the lake, they struggled up to the shore. Andy looked at Eric gratefully and was ashamed of having called Eric a coward. He realized that Eric had true courage. He hugged Eric, saying “sorry” to Eric repeatedly for his rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Eric forgave him happily. He and Andy were friends again and they went home together as usual.
