I hadn’t spoken with Samantha in months. Perhaps it was because I was jealous (嫉妒的). After all, she seems to have everything a girl could want. I used to admire her too until she proved that she could draw better, run faster, and score higher in every other subject.
My family was going to go camping at the lake on summer holiday like we always do. Only this time, my Mom announced some very unwelcome news. ”Hanna! Guess what? I’ve invited the McCarthy’s family on our camping trip. “How does that sound?” “Terrible,” I groaned. However, Mom wasn’t changing her mind.
At the lake, my family organized ourselves in the cabin (小木屋) while the McCarthy’s set up their tent. I spent the week ignoring Samantha and staying inside reading. I thought I could get away without talking to her, but it wasn’t so.
On the fourth night of our trip, a thunderstorm struck. The McCarthy’s decided to spend the night in our cabin because they didn’t feel safe in the tent. I, of course, had to share a room with Samantha.
I woke up late at night. The storm had gotten worse. I desperately needed to use the toilet. Our cabin didn’t have one, so I had to use an outhouse a short walk away.
I got out of bed, being careful not to wake anyone up. However, when I was reaching for my flashlight, I accidentally stepped on Samantha’s arm. She woke up immediately. Knowing that I would go to the bathroom alone, she insisted to go with me.
Outside, it was raining hard. Lightning flashed across the sky and the thunder was so loud it seemed to shake the cabin. When we went back and rounded the comer to the cabin, we saw a big tree lay across the entrance of the cabin, blocking the door. There was no way to get back in.

The Overturned Bin
“Char siu bao,” I pushed my cart (推车) around table after table of hungry customers. It was Saturday morning — the height of the brunch rush — and everyone in the neighborhood knew that Grandma Wu’s restaurant offered the freshest dim sum. Grandma’s Chinese dishes were so irresistible that customers were numerous.
After a while, my cart was empty and I took some of my favorite char siu bao at the tiny table in the alley (巷子) behind the restaurant. But just as I was about to take my first bite, I noticed something strange. Our garbage bins had been knocked over! Trash and half-eaten dim sum littered the ground.
Swallowing my bao, I quickly picked up the mess. Then I headed back inside to help with the rest of the rubbish. I forgot all about the mystery of the knocked-over bins until I took out the trash only to find the garbage bins had tipped over again!
Could it have been the wind? As I cleaned up for a second time, I looked at the darkening sky. A storm was heading our way, but the tree branches were not moving. Determined to avoid cleaning up a third time, I placed three stones on top of the bins.
I was met with another surprise early next morning. Looking out of my window for signs of the storm, I spotted the garbage bins — knocked over again! I complained as it started to rain. That’s when I noticed two yellow eyes staring back at me — it was a little gray cat!
“So you’re the one that keeps leaving messes!” I rushed to the alley, finally understanding. I watched as the cat tried to get the half-eaten bao inside. Cats aren’t supposed to eat bao. Garlic could be deadly to cats. But the cat was clearly too hungry to care.

As Good As You
When Jenna’s taekwondo (跆拳道) instructor, Ms. Baroni, introduced Marti, Jenna’s best friend, to everyone, Jenna, was so excited that Marti would be taking lessons with her.
Class started with warm-up exercises, and then Ms. Baroni divided everyone into color-belt groups. Seeing Marti become red in face and play with the edge of her shirt, Ms. Baroni told the friends to work together, even though Jenna was a yellow belt and a level above Marti, making Marti less nervous on her first day. It suited Jenna fine. She couldn’t wait to demonstrate some basic kicks to Marti. Marti copied her kick as high as Jenna’s shoulder. “Great job, Marti!” said Ms. Baroni, who had walked up behind them. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti, teaching her how to straighten her leg and snap her foot out to make the legs form a square. Jenna collapsed against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did.
The more Marti did, the more praise she earned from Ms. Baroni, and so the more half heartedly Jenna practiced. What if Marti became better than her? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student? “Watch your form!” Who is Ms. Baroni scolding? Jenna wondered. She turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at her. Nothing could have been worse. “Jenna, your side kick could be better than that”, said Ms. Baroni with a slight frown, “You’ve memorized your form perfectly, but your moves are sloppy (马虎的). Make the legs fully extended, point the toes downward, and try again.”
At the end of the class, Jenna grabbed her bag and hurried outside to find her mom. She had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now she wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress their teacher with her skills. And as Marti turned into a star student, Jenna became less and less excited about taekwondo.

I’d just returned from a beautiful autumn early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.
My little dog ran in circles of excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but without luck.
At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch tired. At my age, one hiking is usually plenty! I began to make a list of the keys. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, but it was sensitive, and the key chain would be expensive to replace. But the iron heart made by my grandfather was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my head, I retraced my steps again and again but finally gave up.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow storm. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening. It was peaceful until I heard my car alarm coming from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted the key in the door and finally opened it, and then moved it in the ignition (引擎) until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next door neighbors being annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process.

From the moment my husband brought home a box of six chicks from Tractor Supply Company, our nine-year-old, Sophie, didn’t let them out of her sight. She named them Trixie, Beauty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain Flint, and Adrian (we were reading Treasure Island and watching Rocky at the time).
Sophie made a promise that she would take good care of them and took at least one chicken everywhere we let her. We were content with this; after all, it was a good way to make her dutiful and responsible. So when we wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed, she was very upset. She, actually, argued about this issue again and again, claiming that it is Duty NO.1 to company her baby chickens to sleep. Later, we made a compromise that we’ve allowed one inside at a time if Sophie immediately cleans up after the visit.
On a special festival, she dressed as a chicken and convinced us it was the turn of Trixie and Sweet to come with her to get candies from the neighbors — that’s Duty NO.2 to company her baby to have fun. The reactions from neighbors were quite amusing. “Wait, are these real chickens you’re holding?” “Of course! They’re my babies, and I am the mother.” Sophie answered excitedly. Trixie and Sweet cooed (咕咕叫) the whole time, seeming to make response.
One hot day, I buried myself in piles of work when Sophie rushed into the room, asking “Mommy, can I take Captain Flint to the pond?” To be frank, I didn’t quite catch what she said but still nodded, even without taking my eyes off the screen. She jumped to cheer. “Captain Flint, let’s head for the pond now!” “Coo, coo.” Then they rushed out of the room.
Several minutes later, I suddenly realized that Sophie just went to the pond with a chicken! Could Sophie swim? No!!! Could chickens swim? No!!! Could anything unexpected happen?

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.

I saw children playing in the playground happily, but I was never allowed there. It wasn’t just me, but all my other friends. When I was little, I didn’t care about it much, but when I grew up things seemed to change. Me, my family, and friends were all Africans and mainly we all had dark skin, which was the reason for all this.
My mama would always say, “Things will change, Berhane, you will one day see the world.” What she said turned out to be right years later. But at that time, I doubted about her words because of the rules of my school without knowing I would make friends with a white girl.
The school I studied had two parts which were separated by a wall. I never knew what was like on the other side of the school and neither did my friends. But there was one thing that we know for sure, if you try to find out what was going on the other side, you will be punished.
One day I was playing with a ball during break with Walter and Grady. I kicked the ball so hard that it went to the other side. We decided to bring the ball back because we had no money to buy another.
Making sure that everything was okay, we went to the other side. We walked along the wall. By the time we got close to the ball, we were all dirty and hurt. But all our efforts were a waste because a group of white children already got the ball.
They were wondering where it had come from. We were pushing and fighting each other, saying, “You get the ball!” “No, you get it!” I was told to get the ball because I was the one who had kicked the ball to the other side. I stood there quietly watching the kids. There was a girl and two boys, their backs toward us. Their hairs were all combed and mine were all curled up. I was a girl with dark skin, while they had light skin. We were completely different.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hurriedly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mothers face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

My first marathon. It’s pouring rain, my legs were cold, and I was wishing I hadn’t been too nervous to eat a bigger breakfast. “There were tables of chocolate bars every mile at my last marathon,” Dad says.
Suddenly everyone around us starts moving. Way up ahead I see smoke from the cannon. I can’t believe we hadn’t heard it. It took ages to reach the starting line. Our marathon started.
Soon Dad started to slow down. After only a mile, I overtook everyone in sight. And Dad was way behind with his left leg cramped(抽筋).
I soon reached mile 5, and I was feeling good. I still hadn’t seen a chocolate bar anywhere. Maybe they didn’t have them! Instead, the streets were lined with fast-food places. But there were lines of runners at every shop.
By mile 10, my legs felt good but I was starving. How I wish I hadn’t just had one piece of toast for breakfast! It’s raining so hard that it hurt. My hands stung from the cold. I took a power gel out of pocket and tried to open it, but my hands were so cold they felt as if they were frozen into fists. On the balconies people yelled and waved to me. That cheered me up a bit.
Then I ran past mile 13, the halfway checkpoint. Up ahead I could see my mum and my little brother cheering for me. Hearing my name from their cheers, I felt refreshed and kept on running.
Mile 15. I saw food at last! There were tables full of bananas. I grabbed a banana and scoffed it down. Then I ripped the power gel open. My hands had come unfroze. I squeezed the packet and filled my mouth with the gel. Chocolate would taste better.
When I reached mile 20, and I didn’t want to run another inch. Every step jarred my leg.
I started walking the next mile before Dad caught up running in an awkward way.

Mile 25, we could hear the crowd at the finish line.

Mr Tai, the teacher in charge of athletics at the school of SUKK Temarah, had just celebrated his 58th birthday — an age at which many would think seriously of retiring. However, it was not so with Mr Tai. He had an outstanding record of athletic achievements in leading the school’s sports team. Some of the students he had coached had become national runners or even coaches themselves. The school board agreed he continued to work as they did not want to lose the services of someone who had successfully led the school athletics team to the finals of the National Athletics Championships.
In the year before, however, the school team did not get as many medals in the National Athletics Championships as expected. Mr Tai’s hopes were fired this year by two promising star athletics, Farid and Hassan, who happened to be twins.
In the school’s sports meet, Farid broke the school’s twenty-year record for the 100 meters event. His brother, Hassan, was second to him. Since Hassan had an ankle injury, Mr Tai decided to submit only Farid’s name to the finals of the National Athletics Championships and told Farid to get ready for the event. On the day he submitted the results of the best runner in the school, he mistakenly wrote Hassan’s name instead.
When Mr Tai received the list of the finalists in the 100 meters event in the National Athletics Championships, he realized his mistake. However, it was too late to inform the sports secretariat (秘书处). Besides, pride also did not allow him to tell Farid the mistake. He decided to inform his brother, Hassan, and start training him in the final preparations. When Farid learned that he was not a finalist, he could not believe his ears. Even though he was glad that his brother was qualified for the event, he was quite disappointed. To make matters worse, Mr Tai did not give him any reasons for his not being allowed to take part in the finals. Realizing that his hopes for athletic glory were destroyed, Farid felt extremely sad.

1.【版本1】
“Oh my gosh! What should we do?” she cried out. She was totally panicked and lost her calmness. I tried my best to calm her down and in the meantime, scanned around for a temporary shelter. Suddenly, I spotted the tent. Thank God! Holding Samantha’s hand, I ran as fast as I could into the tent, where we found some towels to dry ourselves and slept in each other’s arms. Samantha had bad dreams, but we managed to make it through the night.
Morning dawned on us and we walked out of the tent. The door was still blocked and obviously we needed to ask for help. Together, we walked for miles to finally meet some warm-hearted people, who offered to go back with us and helped remove the tree. Having seen that our parents were safe, Samantha gave me a big hug, saying, “You are so brave and clever! I wouldn’t know what to do without you!” Right at that moment, I suddenly realized how petty and immature I had been. Hugging her back, I was secretly grateful to regain the friendship.
【版本2】
“Oh my gosh! What should we do?” she cried out. Thinking fast, I asked, “Is your tent still okay?” “I think so,” she answered. “Then we’ll spend the night there and get help in the morning,” I told her. The tent was still dry, but it was super cold for the McCarthy’s had taken all of their sleeping bags inside. Samantha, however, knew what to do. She pulled out a picnic blanket from one of the many bags left behind and spread it out. “It’s not a lot, but if we use each other’s body-heat, we’ll be warm enough,” she said. I had no choice and that’s how we got through the storm.
Morning dawned on us and we walked out of the tent. We made our way to the cabin. Obviously, the door is completely blocked. Our parents stuck in that cabin, relying on us to get them out. Since phone service was bad there, we decided to look for some people to help us. We chose a road together, and arm in arm, started to walk. Half an hour later, we spotted a house, a wide excitement taking hold of both of us. Finally, our families managed to get out of the cabin with the help of some kind-hearted people. After this experience, Samantha and I became close friends. Saving two families was indeed a great accomplishment for sure, but gaining a friend was even greater.

Hesitating for a while, she said “Two more judges other than Ms. Baroni will give you points. Are you sure you can make it?” Marti looked disappointed and asked, “You don’t think I’m good enough?” Jenna shook her head but felt her face burning, trying to dodge her eyes. She didn’t like feeling jealous, but she couldn’t help it because she hadn’t been ready to test for her next belt. A week later, Jenna encouraged Marti at the belt testing although she secretly knew she would feel better if Marti made a mistake or two.
When Marti finished her form, Jenna thought it looked perfect. Evidence could be found from the judges’ question for Marti, “How often do you practice?” “45 minutes every day,” answered Marti. Marti’s answer reminded Jenna how halfheartedly she had practiced, which made her ashamed. So she approached Marti to congratulate her on her success. “Thank you,” Marti said with a big smile, hugging Jenna tightly. Jenna happily invited Marti to practise together afterwards. Marti cried out excitedly, “So I have a chance to become as good as you.” Jenna laughed, “Funny, I was hoping I might become as good as you.”

Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming that it was a neighbor outside, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready. Three neighbors from several streets away stood outside. One of them held out her gloved hand, with my keys hanging from her pointer finger and a giant smile on her face! I wanted to hug her, to express my deepest gratitude, but in a COVID world, all I could do was say, “Oh, my goodness! Thank you!”
By keeping pressing the alarm button, they found my home. I took the keys in my grateful hands. Before she and the other neighbors waved goodbye, she said, “It’s not a big deal. You would have done the same thing!” I don’t think I would have done the same thing! Pressing the alarm until I heard a car alarm would not have occurred to me. I was astonished by her clever kindness and wished I could have hugged her. Instead, I hugged the keys.

In case of emergency, I took a river tube (救生圈) and hurried to the pond. I sighed with relief when I saw my little girl sitting crouched by the lake with Captain Flint pacing around her. “What are you doing?” Hearing my voice, Sophie turned her head, rose immediately and danced toward me. “Mommy, look there! I’m making a ship for my Captain Flint.” Several small branches were carefully arranged, and some unknown thin long leaves tied them together. “Mum, but it still doesn’t look like a real ship”, Sophie murmured frustratedly. “What about this?” I raised the river tube, adding, “We can make it the body of the ship and the branches the board of it.” “Brilliant! Let’s start!” Her eyes relit with joy and we worked together to make a perfect ship.
Captain Flint’s ship would start its first sail. We put Captain Flint gently on the board, and use a long branch stuck to the ship to control the ship’s direction. It seemed quite excited about its first sail, flapping its wings and cooing melodiously. “Go, Captain Flint!” Sophie cheered, directing the ship have a short but encouraging sail. “Mommy, you know, it’s Duty NO. 3 to company her baby to finish their first adventure.” She look at me with a dazzling smile. 6.One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked what good things happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something good must have happened. Think it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by his head teacher for helping cleaning the front desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just consider everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he kept patient and peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I witnessed his attitude changing from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a struggle, but he was making headway. My hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get used to seeing the cup of life as half full.

The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Though a little stunned, Ben stood straight and defended himself, “Mom, it was the cat! I promise.” Forcing a smile, the mother reached for another chocolate and passed it to the boy. “A reward for your perfect repair.” Staring at the chocolates, the boy hesitated but still continued to deny everything. Before he could say anything, a third chocolate appeared in his hand, with his mom’s soft voice “And this one is for your bravery. You are brave enough to stick to your decision.”
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. It seemed that everything was all at Mom’s fingertips. Speechless, the boy felt a lump in his throat. He lowered his head in shame and stammered out the truth. “Mom, I’m so sorry that I broke your vase and lied to you. I was too terrified because it’s your favourite antique.” Relieved and delighted, the mother cradled him in her arms and whispered, “Good boy… It’s never too late to mend.” With the chocolate box handed to the boy, Mom said delightedly, “These ones are all for your honesty, my boy! Do remember that honesty values more than any antique.”

I felt grateful for his company, and we encouraged each other to keep going. The last few miles were tough, but we kept pushing ourselves.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I will go to get it,” I accepted at last. I really didn’t want to go, but we had to go and get it before things got harder for us. I went towards the group until I stepped on a stick. They turned and looked at me. I kept a amount of distance between us and asked politely, “That is my ball, can I please have it?” Before getting their answer, I heard Walter shouting, “The teacher is coming.” Immediately I turned and ran away as fast as I could.
Paragraph 2:
But suddenly, I heard a girl’s voice from behind, so I turned to have a look. It was the white girl who was among the three children running towards me with ball in her hand. “Here is your ball,” she said to me smiling.

9.I started walking the next mile before Dad caught up running in an awkward way. He looked exhausted, but he smiled when he saw me. We walked and jogged together, and he told me about his previous marathons. He said that it’s not about winning, but about finishing the race. I felt grateful for his company, and we encouraged each other to keep going. The last few miles were tough, but we kept pushing ourselves.
Mile 25, we could hear the crowd at the finish line. It was a deafening roar, and it gave us a burst of energy. We looked at each other and grinned. We knew we were almost there. We could see the finish line up ahead, and our hearts were beating fast. We could hear our names being called over the loudspeaker. We picked up our pace and ran towards the finish line. When we crossed it, we hugged each other tightly. We had done it! We felt a sense of accomplishment that we had never felt before.
