Late one evening, my constant yawns(呵欠)convinced me to retire for the night. I put on a comfortable cotton gown, turned the lights low, and crawled into bed between the cool but comfortable sheets. To ensure a good night’s rest, I called out towards the kitchen to my smart speaker, “Alexa, play sounds to sleep by.” As I gathered my cozy sheet up under my chin, I felt at peace with my cat Bella snuggled up(依偎)to me.
During the night, a heavy object landed on my stomach, causing me to scream and sit up, only to discover that it was Bella. She had a habit of waking me up to get her a snack, but the hands on the clock said 3:00 am, and I was annoyed that she had interrupted a happy dream. I fell back against the pillow and promised I’d feed her in the morning. That wasn’t acceptable to her, so she continued to walk on top of me while pressing her paws into my body.
Because that proved to be unsuccessful, she jumped over to the bedside table and deliberately used her paw to knock things on the floor, one at a time, to keep me from going back to sleep. Her efforts paid off as I looked over in the dark room and knew the smug(沾沾自喜的)look on her face conveyed a serious demand. “Get up, human. I’m ready for my nightly treat.”
Knowing she would keep disturbing me until she got her snack, I took a few minutes to focus my eyes and heard what sounded like running water or someone pressure-washing a wall. I couldn’t imagine our apartment staff doing maintenance in the middle of the night, so I assumed I had turned off the water tap. I would regret the large water bill it would bring about, so I unwillingly got up and went into the kitchen. I found nothing out of the ordinary so I continued to search with Bella following me. I checked the bathroom, where I found no running water.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband’s sister-in-law died of cancer at 33, leaving a confused son Todd in the care of his father, who was not able to handle his own life. For the next 6 months, Todd was not only dealing with his personal world torn apart, but he was often laughed at and bullied (欺凌) by his classmates. What to do with Todd became the topic of family meetings and discussions.
Several of my husband’s relatives wanted to invite Todd into their homes and families, but they hadn’t made a decision yet. Our family of five—my husband, our three young children, and I—lived miles away from the rest of the family. Perhaps the best solution would be to remove Todd from his current location. After many serious discussions, we decided to take on the challenge. We would give him a fresh start—a new life.
We also determined that the choice to live with us must be Todd’s. When he was asked, he replied YES as if he had found a life-saving raft in an ocean of helplessness. That does not mean he was not afraid—he was terrified. I was, too. What if I could not be the mother he needed? How would my other children accept him? The day he was to arrive, I prepared my daughter, aged eight, and son, aged seven (the baby was too little) to help them understand that their cousin was coming to live with us and would be like an older brother. Their little minds thought it was wonderful!
When Todd arrived, he stood in the doorway, his face white with fear. He knew, and I knew, that the next step he took would change our lives forever. At ten years old, he had already experienced more emotional pain than most people do in a lifetime. “Todd, come in,” I said. “We are so excited to have you here. Come into the kitchen. I’ve made a cake.” I hoped my words were welcoming and cheerful.

Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running after the black and white ball across the grassy field with the other players in her bright orange uniform.
Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed her and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. She was pretty good at passing the ball, but every time she got a chance to kick the ball to the goal, it would be stopped by a player from the other team or be caught by the goalkeeper. Now the football season was almost over and she still had not scored one single goal. She really felt discouraged and wondered if she should quit football and join a different club.
“After all, I am a girl. I was not born for such a rough game,” Sally told herself. “I will try another club.” She even daydreamed that she was a member of the hip hop club and she was dancing on stage in a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She also thought about joining a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice.
“Don’t give up. No one is born for the game. Use your advantage,” the coach said after Sally told him her doubt during a break between the sessions. “Most important of all, believe yourself. You can do it.”
Sally was not totally convinced but she did want to have a try. When the break was over, the coach blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent down to tie up her shoes and repeated what the coach had said in her mind. “Use your advantage. Believe yourself. You can do it.”

My Mother’s Diamond
It was a beautiful August day, just weeks before school restarted. My mother, my brother and I were sitting in our front yard, enjoying the afternoon shade of the big tree. My father, Carl, was also at home, working in his basement office. As we lazed outside, we watched as two girls came towards us on our side of the street; one riding a bicycle and one holding onto the back of it as she roller-skated behind.
Just as they passed by, the skater lost her balance and went down on the street, right in front of our neighbor’s house. My mother jumped up quickly and ran toward them to help the fallen skater, and my mother’s foot caught on an uneven section of the sidewalk. Down she went, injuring her knees, her palms and her chin. We came running up to her and my brother went to ask my father for help. Meanwhile, I was checking on the skater, who was okay.
The two girls continued on their way, and my mother lay there on the sidewalk, bleeding. My father came running, and he carried my mother into the house. He set her down on a kitchen chair and got busy cleaning her wounds with a wet washcloth. As they washed the wounds, my mother looked at her wedding ring on her finger, only to find the diamond was gone.
My brother and I ran outside to look for the missing diamond. The place she fell on the sidewalk was covered with small rocks. We had no luck. My mother went out and searched as well, on her painful hands and knees. Many people spent many hours searching the area over the next several days, all in vain. My mother’s wedding ring, although not fancy, was priceless to her.
Several months passed. Our neighbor, Mike, was a good friend and had a business buying and reselling cars. We bought several cars from him over the years because he was so good at it. He liked wearing work boots and his boots were always muddy wherever he went.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
David had run the jewelry shop passed from his grandfather for thirty years, collecting and selling all kinds of jewelry. In the little front window, gold rings, silver earrings, necklaces and other beautiful jewelry were displayed.
On a sunny winter afternoon, a little boy was standing before the window, his forehead against the glass, studying each treasure, as if he were looking for something quite special. Finally he straightened up with a satisfied smile and entered the shop.
“Mister, would you please show me that blue necklace in the window?” the little boy asked David eagerly. “It looks just like the one Mom lost,” said he, entirely to himself.
The necklace was collected at a price of $100 from a middle-aged lady a few months ago, who seemed in great need of money. David lifted out the necklace. “Are you buying it for someone?” David asked.
“It is for my mother. You see, this will be the first Christmas since father died. I’ve been looking for the most wonderful present for her. Will you wrap it up pretty for me, please?”
“How much money do you have?” asked David.
The little boy poured out a handful of pennies on the counter and explained “I emptied my bank”.
David looked at him thoughtfully. Then he carefully drew back the necklace. The price tag (标签) was visible to him but not the little boy. How could he tell him? “Just a minute,” he said, and turned towards the back of the store. He removed the price tag. Over his shoulder he called, “What’s your name?”
“Jimmy.”
When David turned to where Jimmy waited, a package lay in his hand, wrapped in blue paper and tied with a red ribbon (丝带). “Here you are,” he said. Jimmy took it carefully and smiled happily at the shop owner over his shoulder as he ran out of the door.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Entering a grocery store just days before Thanksgiving, I did not know I would get to be a part of something beautiful. After selecting my items, I went to the checkout line. I noticed a young woman in front of me. Her clothes were shabby(破旧的), and she looked so tired. She had a toddler(学步儿童) who could not have been more than three years old, and a new-born who was just a few weeks old. Frazzled(疲惫烦躁的) is how I would describe her. The toddler was running and jumping around. The baby was crying. My heart went out to her. I had been in her shoes with my own two sons.
She managed to get her groceries in a hurry, and the clerk started checking out her items. As I stood behind her, I noticed that she was losing patience with her kids but didn’t know what to do. She was trying to balance both tasks without causing a huge disruption. I began to whisper a prayer of peace and strength over this woman. The line behind me continued to snake its way into an aisle. The pressure was growing.
As I watched her, I remembered a time that I had been in a grocery store with a toddler who was running around and a screaming baby. I remembered an old man behind me and the inappropriate comment he made to me as I checked out. That memory took me away for a moment. When I came back to the present,I realized that the young woman was looking at a few items and trying to decide what she needed to put back. The people in line behind me were getting impatient and frustrated. The running toddler and screaming baby just added to the stress of her situation.

Tom and his friends had a rule in their group: Anyone who had recently turned 18 would have to treat everyone to a nice place. And this time, it was Tom’s turn. Tom wanted to do something different. He decided to take his friends on a long drive through mountains, stopping at a well-known cafe along the way to treat them to a delicious supper.
Since he had gotten his driver’s license recently,Tom went happily to his dad and asked if he could lend his car to him for one day. To Tom’s surprise, his dad flatly refused him.
“Dad, it’s a rule in our group! Last time, it was Sam’s turn. He drove us to his dad’s restaurant. His dad didn’t say anything,” Tom said.
His dad explained,“I’m worried about your safety. I’m not going to let you drive by yourself. It’s dangerous. But I don’t want you to miss the trip. How about having a dad as your driver?”
Tom said, “But I’m an adult now! My friends will think I am a coward(胆小鬼) if you drive us tonight. I’m not going.” Tom ran away and locked himself in his room. His dad sighed and walked away.
Before long, Sam called Tom, asking when he’d leave his house. Tom said they had to cancel the trip because his dad didn’t allow him to take his car. Sam was disappointed, but Tom said,“Don’t worry. I will manage. Be ready at 10 p.m. See you!”
Tom came up with a plan. He decided to steal his dad’s car and return early in the morning before his father woke up. After his dad went to sleep, he secretly drove the car out.
At around 10 p.m., he reached Sam’s house and picked him and two other friends up. Minutes after they left, Tom explained how he got the car. Tom was so absorbed in chatting that he forgot to switch on the signal light before taking a turn. The car coming from the opposite direction failed to notice them.

Jack was awakened by a gunshot. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Jack saw that it was a long gun. A minute later, a man wearing hunting clothes came out of the woods.
Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly raised the gun and shot at it. Jack watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall bushes. The hunter didn’t move for a moment. Then he began to look for the bird.
“No hunting!” Jack came out in his nightclothes and shouted. “No hunting on my land!” The man called back, “Where can I hunt?” Jack said, “Go South!” And then he pointed in the direction behind the man. The hunter started to walk away.
After a while, Jack had just finished putting on his clothes when he heard another gunshot. He walked toward the lake. Fighting was the last thing he wanted, but the man must go. Suddenly he heard a bird s wings beating the dry grass. Jack moved quickly towards the sound. He saw a colored head... the head of a beautiful bird. The bird flapped its wings, one of which was broken completely.
Jack decided to take the bird home and treat its broken wing so that it could fly again. He was almost going through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him. “You have just found that bird?” the hunter asked, stepping closer, and said, “Give me that bird!”
“Leave here and don’t follow me,” Jack told him. The man’s face got red. “Mister,” he said, “I have been hunting here all my life. I grew up here.” Jack looked into the hunter’s gray eyes and raised his voice, “I do not know who you are and I do not care. I own this place and I am telling you to leave!” “Now look, Mister,” the hunter insisted, “be reasonable.” He raised his gun. A cold wind blew across Jack’s face. 10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The yellow light flashed on my dashboard(仪表盘), showing the words: Maintenance Required. “I don’t have time for this,” I thought as I sped along the freeway. “I’ve got two jobs, and a family to take care of, dogs to feed and exercise to get in. When can I squeeze in a four-hour window without the use of my car?”
In fact, for days I drove with the light flashing. I felt exhausted, juggling(尽量兼顾)a new job that had me driving all over the city, eating in my car and carrying piles of files with me. I was drowning in my “to-do” and this “Maintenance Required” was putting me over the top.
The light now had my full attention. It was obvious that I was going to have to change my entire day. As a contract therapist(治疗师), I was only paid for the patients I saw, so canceling my appointments was going to cost me a lot, but so would ignoring the light. As I reached for my cell phone to call the office, it rang from the depth of my pocket. My patient called to cancel his appointment.
Therefore, I made it to the dealer’s in time to drop off my car. I had four hours to kill. I thought about waiting at the dealer’s, but that seemed like punishment. My car needed maintenance and so did my soul. I found out that the dealer offered a bus ride that could drop me at a mall. Although I had no love for shopping, I knew that the beach was about a mile from the mall. I had my sneakers, my iPod and my phone, so I set off on my adventure.
I discovered that everything, including waiting and distance, seemed shorter and closer when I mentally used the word “only”. It would only be four hours and I would have my car again.

1.参考范文:
Since the sound was still evident,I realized the seriousness of the situation. I thought it necessary to solve the mystery. I returned to the kitchen, where the disturbance was more obvious and stood like a statue trying to identify the sound. Despite Bella’s loud yowl, I was still able to hear the strange noise, which seemed to come from inside the wall between my apartment and the unit next door. I could feel my muscles tense up and my hands shake because I was now convinced a pipe had burst, and water could be flooding the neighboring apartment.
I didn’t see water on the wall, so I thought it wasn’t an emergency. However, one thing I had done was drag someone out of bed in the middle of the night. I walked to the end of the kitchen bar closest to the wall in question, picked up my phone, and placed my fumbling fingers on the keypad. Instantly, the reality of what was happening became clear to me, and I joyfully identified the source of the mysterious noise. All I had to do to settle the entire mystery was to say angrily, “Alexa, shut up!”

A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

At that moment, Todd couldn’t hold back his tears any more. He nodded, tears rolling down his cheeks. I could feel the fear and sadness inside Todd melt away. Todd ate up the piece of cake and hugged me tightly, saying, “Thank you!” From that day on, Todd lived with us and we treated him as our own family member. No one paid too much attention to Sally who found a perfect position and waited there. At that very moment, the ball ran to her. One mild winter day, Mike came over to see my father. Mike wiped his boots inside the front door before heading to the basement. Minutes later, Mike left our house. Closing the door, I noticed the dirt around the front door and I began to sweep up. As I carried the dustpan toward the can, I noticed a slight light in the dirt. I reached into the dirt, and picked up a rock, rubbing it. Surprisingly, the mud was wiped away and her diamond appeared.
I started yelling at the top of my lungs as I ran to the basement. It was unbelievable. As Mike walked between his yard and ours, he stepped in some mud that contained the stone. As a result, he tracked it into our house, and wiped it off in the front door. My father had the diamond reset in the wedding ring. There is no way she would ever replace this diamond that was returned to her in such a miraculous way.

I asked the clerk to pack her items and paid for them. The woman was moved to tears and said, “I don’t know how to repay you.” “I’ll take a hug!” I smiled. Instantly, she wiped her tears and hugged me.
I gladly accepted her hug as payment for her groceries. I also said to her that she could pay me back by remembering this and paying it forward next time she came across someone in need. She thanked me and happily went out. The toddler was still running, and the baby was still crying, but now no one seemed to mind. I was feeling so renewed and peaceful that I almost felt guilty. What a brilliant idea those carmakers had. I thought. Maintenance Required! If only we came with such a light.
My phone rang. It was the dealer letting me know my car was ready an hour early. “So soon?” I asked. “Will it be OK if I come in a couple of hours? I am still working on a little maintenance of my own.” Hearing “Of course” on the phone, I said goodbye. Lost in natural beauty on the beach, I felt more and more refreshed. I suddenly realized the importance of taking care of ourselves.
