A man in California survived a five-hour night swim, thanks to the 36 of a friendly seal (海豹).
Scott Thompson, a boater from Southern California, was out on his boat. After realizing the weather wasn’t favorable, he turned the boat back towards land.
Soon after, something 37 happened. The boat was rocked by the wavy water and Scott got 38 out of the boat. The engines continued to run, moving the boat farther and farther away from him, which made it 39 to swim back to it. He watched his boat 40 in the middle of the icy Santa Barbara Channel.
Lost at sea, with no land in 41 , Thompson was sure these were his 42 moments on earth. However, thoughts of his family helped him find the 43 to survive. “Just keep 44 , and you will get home to your family,” Thompson kept telling himself. “Just imagining my girls and my son growing up without me, and my wife not having a husband to support her, I couldn’t 45 .
All of a sudden, he heard a big splash (拍水声). It was a medium-sized harbor seal that Thompson described as “an angel” that came to help him. “The seal would come up and 46 me, like a dog comes up and pushes your leg.” Thompson said. It was a sense of 47 , Thompson recalled, knowing that he wasn’t alone on this heroic journey.
Being pushed along by the seal, Thompson felt 48 to swim to the nearest oil platform, which was far but closer than land. With the 49 of the seal, he swam through the dark, freezing water for five hours, until he managed to reach an oil platform. People aboard the oil platform offered aid. They rushed him to a hospital where Thompson was treated and recovered a few days later.
While the thought of his 50 motivated him to keep going, Thompson said that he would not have endured through the pain if it hadn’t been for the seal swimming alongside him.

When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write my own books. Half the students smiled unkindly, 51 nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be 52 , only geniuses can become writers,” the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this term.” I was so ashamed that I burst into 53 . That night I wrote a short sad poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the newspaper. To my 54 , they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed my teacher and fellow students. They laughed, “Just plain dumb luck,” the teacher said. I 55 success. I’d sold the first thing I’d 56 written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck that was fine with me.
During the next two years I sold dozens of poems and letters. By the time I graduated from high school, I had scrapbooks (剪贴簿) 57 my published works. I never 58 my writing to my teachers, friends or my family 59 because they were dream killers.
I had four children at the time. 60 the children slept, I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. It took nine months. I chose a 61 and mailed it. A month later I received a contract, an advance on payments, and a request to start 62 another book. Crying Wind, became a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and sold worldwide. My first book also became 63 reading in native American schools in Canada.
The 64 year I ever had as a writer I earned two dollars. In my best year I earned 36,000 dollars. People ask what college I 65 , what degrees I had and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.” I just write. I’m not a genius. But I’ve written eight books. To all those who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can.” Writing is easy, it’s fun and anyone can do it.

Courage involves the balance between fear and bravery. Without fear, we’ll do foolish things. And without courage, we’ll never step into the 141 . The balance of the two is where the 142 lies, and it’s a balance we all deal with every day.

In facing my fears and finding the courage to 157 them, I swear my life has been 158 . So live big and try to let your courage 159 your fear. You never know where it might 160 you.
