Last week, four American brothers travelled to Ireland as visitors — but as they rescued a little girl and her father from drowning in the ocean, they are now leaving the country as heroes.
Eoghan, Walter and Declan Butler had travelled to the Emerald Isles (a popular nickname for Ireland) from Washington D.C. with their brother-in-law Alex Thomson in order to attend their grandfather’s funeral (葬礼). The young men had been preparing to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach when they heard someone calling for help.
A six-year-old girl on a flotation device had been swept out to the sea by a current when her father started yelling for help. Eoghan, Declan and Alex immediately rushed into the ocean to rescue the girl while Walter stayed on the shore in case someone needed CPR Since the girl had already drifted (漂流) half a mile away from the shore, the three brothers were forced to swim for 25 minutes in order to reach her — an energy-consuming job, even for three athletic young men. Once they reached the girl, the brothers then took turns swimming on their backs in order to pull the girl’s flotation device back to the shore on their chests.
Upon successfully bringing the girl back to the dry land, Eoghan and Declan noticed that the girl’s father was still in the water after he had put on a life vest to swim out and help with the rescue mission. The twin brothers then jumped back into the water and rescued the struggling father as well.
Though the young men felt relieved to have rescued the father and daughter, they felt particularly moved when they were visited by the little girl’s mother the very next day. “Seeing her jump around and kiss her mom was actually amazing,” Declan told The Washington Post.
Furthermore, the boys realized that they had rescued the little girl on the exact same day when the brother of their grandfather had drowned several decades before.
24.Why did the four brothers go to the Emerald Isles?
A.They went there for sightseeing. B.They attended a family gathering.
C.They attended their grandfather’s funeral. D.They visited their grandfather’s brother.
25.How is the third paragraph developed?
A.By providing examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By drawing some conclusions. D.By following the time of order.
26.How did the brothers feel when the girl’s mother visited them the next day?
A.Relieved. B.Proud. C.Grateful. D.Touched.
27.What can we learn about the brothers?
A.They made a great effort to save the girl.
B.Walter was the three brothers’ brother-in-law.
C.It was Declan and Alex who saved the girl’s father.
D.The boys rescued the girl on the day when their father died.

C
(2022春·吉林·高二校联考期末)Humans have little difficulty recognizing one another. We may not recall a name, but we can usually remember if we’ve seen a face. And we know that no two faces are exactly alike. Even “identical” twins have slightly different faces. Each human face is truly unique, which makes seeing someone’s face a great way to confirm their identity. And now we’ve invented machines that are able to recognize faces, which they are doing daily for numerous purposes at lightning speed.
Governments, banks, employers, border security and police services are increasingly using facial recognition technology. This allows them to quickly confirm an individual’s identity. Systems are becoming so efficient and effective that a wanted criminal can instantly be picked out of a crowd of thousands of people. All that’s required is an image in a database to compare with the images of any number of people in a crowd.
Ordinary people, too, are using facial recognition to unlock their phones, their computers and other devices. Such systems are generally quite secure. According to a cellphone company, for example, there is only one chance in a million that a face other than your own could unlock your phone.
Personal facial recognition protection has several benefits. It is instantaneous (瞬间完成的), and it relieves us of the need to memorize passwords or PINs (Personal Identification Numbers). However, a device will require a password in a rare event where it doesn’t, for whatever reason, recognize the user’s face.
Technology often makes our lives easier in everyday ways. However, sometimes the same technology is used in ways that we might find disturbing. For some people, it is good, but for other people, it might bring bad and uncomfortable feelings. Is there a disadvantage to the rapid spread of facial recognition technology? There are numerous concerns about the use of facial recognition. Primarily, the concern is that it may threaten privacy (隐私). The installation (安装) of more and more cameras in public and private places is now a part of everyday life. Those cameras are being linked with huge image databases. This means people can be observed and recognized wherever they go and whatever they do. Cameras on every lamppost (街灯柱) may make public spaces safer, but keeping citizens who obey the law under constant watch is disturbing to many.
When a person wears a mask or a scarf, which covers his face, facial recognition systems are having some difficulty. A mask covers many of the facial data points used by recognition software to confirm a person’s identity. In response, facial recognition systems are being trained to use less facial data. That could affect how dependable it is as a method of identity detection.
28.Why can we identify people by seeing someone’s face?
A.A human’s face is not often covered. B.A human’s face is easy to memorize.
C.A human’s face is the only one of its kind. D.A human’s face can show one’s feelings.
29.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Practical uses of facial recognition technology. B.Development of facial recognition technology.
C.Different ways to unlock phones and computers. D.Databases to compare with the images of people.
30.How should people usually deal with a device if it doesn’t recognize the-user’s face?
A.By restarting it. B.By having it repaired.
C.By recognizing one’s voice. D.By using a password.
31.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Most people believe it is illegal to use facial recognition in public.
B.Using less facial data could influence the accuracy of recognition.
C.Wearing a mask doesn’t affect facial recognition at all.
D.The cameras are only linked with personal computers.

根据第一段“And we know that no two faces are exactly alike, Even ‘identical’ twins have slightly different faces. Each human face is truly unique, which makes seeing someone’s face a great way to confirm their identity”(我们知道没有两张脸是完全相同的,即使是“完全相同”的双胞胎也有略微不同的脸。
根据第二段“Governments, banks, employers, border security and police services are increasingly using facial recognition technology. This allows them to quickly confirm an individual’s identity. Systems are becoming so efficient and effective that a wanted criminal can instantly be picked out of a crowd of thousands of people”(政府、银行、雇主、边境安全部门和警察服务部门越来越多地使用面部识别技术。 故选A。
根据第四段“However, a device will require a password in a rare event where it doesn’t, for whatever reason, recognize the user’s face”(然而,在极少数情况下,因为某种原因,设备会无法识别用户的脸,将需要密码。)
根据最后一段中的“When a person wears a mask or a scarf, which covers his face, facial recognition systems are having some difficulty. A mask covers many of the facial data points used by recognition software to confirm a person’s identity. In response, facial recognition systems are being trained to use less facial data. That could affect how dependable it is as a method of identity detection”(当一个人戴着口罩或围巾时,遮住了他的脸,面部识别系统就会遇到一些困难。
D
Most paper receipts (发票) are not recyclable. This is because they’re on thermal paper (热敏纸), which contains a chemical called BPA or sometimes BPS that cannot be easily removed from the paper during the recycling process. So we need a safe method of dealing with paper receipts.
Thermal printing uses heat from a printer head to print letters and numbers; no ink is used. This process requires the addition of BPA or BPS in the “free form”, which means that the chemicals are not bound to the soft paper. According to Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, “The chemicals can easily transfer to anything a receipt touches.” They can be transferred from fingers to the mouth via food, or absorbed directly into the skin when held. BPA or BPS can affect brain development, the heart, lungs and reproductive abilities.
If thermal paper were to be recycled, it would contaminate other products in the recycling stream with BPA or BPS. These products are often turned into items such as facial tissues, paper towels and shopping bags and having BPA or BPS in them would mean our coming into even closer contact with the chemicals. Burning and composting are not an option either, as they would release BPA and BPS into the atmosphere or soil.
The only safe place to throw thermal paper receipts is in the rubbish, followed by immediate hand washing. It’s not ideal, but it is the most effective way to separate BPA and BPS from the environment. Sierra magazine offers a small bit of relief: “Throwing receipts is not the severest of wrong behaviors, since they amount to a tiny part of all paper consumed, according to industry sources.”
If you require a paper record for business purposes and if you often go to the same shops, ask if they consider switching to BPA- and BPS-free thermal paper. The best solution is to ask for receipts to be emailed, rather than printed. Not only will you avoid chemical exposure, but you will also decrease the demand for a paper product that drives deforestation every year; do away with that demand altogether and recycling becomes far less urgent.
32.Why does thermal paper need BPA or BPS?
A.To react with ink freely. B.To be easily recycled.
C.To be easily removed. D.To make the writing come out.
33.What can best replace the underlined word “contaminate” in Paragraph 3?
A.Pollute. B.Transform.
C.Color. D.Destroy.
34.What is Sierra magazine’s attitude to putting thermal paper receipts in dustbins?
A.Opposed. B.Cautious. C.Supportive. D.Ambiguous.
35.Why does the writer write the text?
A.To state the functions of BPA and BPS. B.To express concern over the use of BPA and BPS.
C.To prove the harm of thermal paper receipts. D.To offer ways to tackle thermal paper receipts.

根据第二段中“Thermal printing uses heat from a printer head to print letters and numbers; no ink is used. This process requires the addition of BPA or BPS in the “free form”, which means that the chemicals are not bound to the soft paper.(热敏打印利用打印机头的热量来打印字母和数字;没有使用墨水。这个过程需要添加“自由形式”的BPA或BPS,这意味着这些化学物质不会与软纸结合)”可知,热敏纸需要添加BPA或BPS来完成打印,使字母和数字显示出来。故选D项。
33.【A】词句猜测题。根据第二段中“They can be transferred from fingers to the mouth via food, or absorbed directly into the skin when held. BPA or BPS can affect brain development, the heart, lungs and reproductive abilities.(它们可以通过食物从手指转移到口腔,或者在握住时直接被皮肤吸收。BPA或BPS会影响大脑发育、心脏、肺和生殖能力)”可知,BPA和BPS这类化学物质很容易被人体吸收,对人体有害。由此推知,划线词所在句的意思是“如果热敏纸被回收,它会因为BPA或BPS污染回收流中的其他产品。”由此推知,划线词意为“污染”,与pollute意思接近。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“Sierra magazine offers a small bit of relief: “Throwing receipts is not the severest of wrong behaviors, since they amount to a tiny part of all paper consumed, according to industry sources.”(Sierra杂志提供了一点安慰:“扔掉发票并不是最严重的错误行为,因为根据行业消息,它们只占所有纸张消耗的一小部分。”)”

(2022春·浙江·高二校联考期末)As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.
In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck (啄) on your fingers.
On Dad’s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each fatuity was waiting at their mailbox to appreciate him for his friendship and his years of service. “Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route,” he used to say, and a story at every one. One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. He once lectured me that to bring everyone plain pleasure is his greatest pleasure, which has clung to me so far.
Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps.
With a heavy heart, I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad’s death, and the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn’t the case.
As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: Santa Claus, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes. I was among the kids whose letters were always answered in time.
I made a turn at the corner and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad’s postmaster and great friend for many years. Threads of silver ran through his beard and the hair. Obviously, time and sorrow for the past days ploughed deep wrinkles on his brow. Sitting down at the table, he began to tell old stories.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;

At one point Frank looked at me with tears in his eyes as if recalling something. Hardly had the words telling my father was genuinely the Santa Claus escaped from his trembling lips when my emphasizing look changed into an astonished one. Recalling every letter answered in time, I was choked with gratitude, my eyes moistened with tears. Flakes were still whirling while a sparkle of light zigzagged across the sky, casting warmth onto my heart. Frank’s stories went on and notably conveyed in his tone was pursuit for the gone era. “Your father always considered others’ pleasure as his own,” Frank’s remark occurred to me like a clap of thunder, planting a seed of dedication rooted in my heart.
Thinking of my father’s philosophy of pleasure, I resolved to be this year’s Santa Claus. Enduring the needle-like wind howling ruthlessly, I made my way to the lamp poles, carefully fumbling for the old letters. Mature as the previous kids were now, I still put pen to paper to respond the innocence with the signature of Santa Claus. When I brought every letter to every original address, the owners’ eyebrows lifted high but then soothed as I explained to them. Spotting the pleased looks on their faces, I felt a surge of warmth circulating through my body. After waving them farewell, I slackened my steps in the snow and wandered around the familiar road, lost in thought of the past golden days that would never fade away.
