Dear Mr. Hanks,

 Our school will launch an activity named English Classics Reading during the summer vacation. And I’m writing to invite you to take part in the opening ceremony.

 This ceremony will be held in the auditorium of our school on July 15. During the ceremony, students are encouraged to share their favorite English materials and compare notes about them with each other. So proper reading materials and methods are in great need. As a native speaker, you must know what reading materials appeal to current youngsters. I’d appreciate it if you could recommend some books to us. If you can give some reading instructions to us, I believe we can even benefit a lot.

On the line came his father’s deep voice: “Bill, you are a BIG boy now and I think it’s time to tell you the truth.” A moment of silence later, his father continued. “When you were a baby, the building we lived in caught fire. It spread quickly and was soon out of control. While trying to find a safe way out, your mum saw a beam (横梁) coming down. To protect you, she placed herself over you and was knocked down unconscious. But for the fireman...” For a moment, Bill just froze there speechless, as if overwhelmed by what he heard: Mum wasn’t born lame. She got injured to protect me! Picturing the slim but strong figure in the fire, Bill couldn’t contain himself any more, tears rolling down his cheeks.

The next morning, when the first ray of sunshine slipped into his room, Bill woke up. Bill got up and found his mother busily preparing breakfast in the kitchen. He greeted his mum and offered to set the table. Over the meal, Bill gathered enough courage and mentioned the call last night. “Mum, I feel terribly sorry. I owe you so much. I...I shouldn’t... ” His mum stopped him and looked into his eyes, saying: “Bill, don’t bother yourself about it. You know, I’ve never regretted doing what I did. I am a MUM! Come on, we couldn’t be late for the parents’ meeting.” “Ok, mum, I’ll introduce you to Miss Helen”. On their way to school, Bill held his mum’s hand tightly, promising to himself: “Thank you mum. I am a BIG boy now, and it’s my turn to shelter you from now on.”
