It was Christmastime 1974. I was ten years old, but I was not looking forward to Christmas. The previous spring my mother had moved our family from rural Alabama to sunny Southern California. My little brother Todd, and I were leaving behind all of our extended family. This would be my first Christmas away from Alabama.
I was a fat, awkward child with a high-pitched voice and a heavy southern accent. My first day at my new school, I went to the front of my fourth grade class to introduce myself. All I said was my name and where I was from. The class burst into laughter with jeers of “He talks funny”. It took the teacher two minutes to restore order.
I was so disappointed that I went to a gas station afterschool and used the phone booth (亭子) there to place a call to my grandmother. I was going to ask her whether I could return to Alabama and live with her and whether she would send me the money for a bus ticket home. But the line was busy, and despite several attempts, I didn’t get through.
My Granny was everything good about Christmas. Her language of love was food. She would spend weeks cooking for Christmas Eve when all of her children and grandchildren would gather at her house. Every favorite dish dessert and cakes was made. Her table and sideboard groaned (发吱嘎声) under the weight of the food. My cousins, my brother and I would burst through her backdoor, our arrival announced by the rhyme of five silver bells, which hung on the door. Her house was tiny but to us children, it was glorious.
She sewed new night dresses for all of her grandchildren. She searched catalogs, newspaper advertisements, and stores all over town to get us exactly the toys we had requested. She was my comfort. She was magical. I missed her desperately.
Fortunately, there was only one week left before the Christmas break. I was longing for my familiar southern Christmas.

Last year, during the summer break, my friends and I decided to go for a walk in the forest. The forest had paths, and we decided that we would hike along the paths and meet at a central point to have a drink later. The whole team had several groups and we had planned on meeting with the rest of the team after three hours.I had a lighter,a partially charged phone, and a bottle of water. We continued on our way towards the deeper part of the forest until we were far from any recognizable trail. After two hours, we were in the deepest part of the forest, and we could not trace our other friends.
All of a sudden,a bear came rushing along our path, and we all run in different directions. After running for about five minutes,I stood alone in a bush. I had no clue about my surroundings as I had never been.there before.I shouted at my friends’ names loudly, but all was in vain:there was no reply, and the whole place was silent. I was confused and felt like crying as I realized I was alone with nothing to protect myself. With a lot of fear,I tried to trace the part where I had come from, but all was useless:l was lost.
As I walked along the path trying to locate my friends, I realized that I was tired, and nothing was looking familiar. I was out of food, water, and barely had any battery in my phone. I decided to walk through the bushes as the trees had grown so close together. I squeezed myself between the little trees. After some thirty minutes, it started raining heavily. Though I had heavy clothing,I was rained on until I was soaked up.I started freezing and praying to the God for protection and direction out of the forest.

Nilsa stared at the clock on the classroom wall, daydreaming about lunch. Her mother had prepared a thermos (保温瓶) full of sancocho. It was one of Nilsa’s favorite dishes, and the national dish of Panama — a country in central America and the hometown of Nilsa’s family. Just thinking about sancocho made her mouth water.
Finally, it was time for lunch. Nilsa carefully poured some sancocho into a bowl. When she looked up, she saw her classmates staring.
“What is that? It smells really bad,” said Gus, covering his nose. “It’s sancocho,” Nilsa responded. “It’s kind of like chicken soup.” Codi glanced at the bowl and said, “Soup? It’s more like a science experiment.” He laughed, pointed to his lunch, and asked, “That’s one weird lunch. Why don’t you eat something normal, like pizza?”
Nilsa looked at everyone else’s lunches: pizza, fries, and sandwiches. Suddenly she didn’t feel hungry any more.
When Nilsa returned home and complained about her classmates’ negative comments, her mother wasn’t mad. Instead, she listened attentively and reminded Nilsa that there is no such thing as “normal” or “weird” food, and that different cultures have their own unique dishes that are loved and appreciated by those who grew up with them.
Nilsa’s mother also suggested making a fresh batch for Nilsa to bring to school the next day. “Then you can share it with your classmates and tell them sancocho tastes great, and that our family has been eating it for hundreds of years. Your great-grandmother taught your grandmother who then taught me.
Nilsa nodded in excitement, and she was grateful for the opportunity to share her favorite dish with her classmates.

I used to be the only child in the family. Everything changed when Tex was born, and I was ten at that time. It seemed to me that Tex got too much attention from Mom and Dad, and I constantly felt a sense of depression. However, my little six-year-old brother had no idea about that, sticking with me all day long, which sometimes really annoyed me.
Last week, I was creating a birthday book for Dad. I worked forever making each picture as perfect as possible. Every time I messed up, I started all over again, so the floor under the kitchen table was covered with half-finished drawings.
“It’s family chore time,” Mom announced. “And you’re on laundry-folding duty,” she told me.
“OK,” I said. “After that, I’ll just put the finishing touches on Dad’s present.”
“I can help, too!” said my little brother, Tex.
I felt a little uncomfortable. But Mom touched his head gently and said, “Of course, baby, you can.” Then she turned to me, “And, Anna, please always remember to move those papers from the floor to the recycling bin in the yard when you’re done with your project.”
I folded the laundry as fast as possible. Just as I was about to get back to the birthday book, my friend showed up. After checking with Mom, we headed to the park. But as soon as we arrived there, the sky filled with giant gray clouds and rain started pouring down. I was upset as I headed back home, dripping wet. That’s when my heart pretty much stopped. Right there, in front of the recycling bin, was a box full of wet-through papers. And not just any papers ... I ran to rescue my birthday book drawings. But it was too late. As I picked up my once-perfect pictures, they were totally ruined!
I cried, “Tex, how did they get out here in the rain?”
Nervously, he came out and said, “Sorry, but I meant to help. I heard what Mom said, and I did it for you. But I had no idea why your birthday book was in those papers.”

A Christmas Worth Remembering
Hector kicked his boot in the snow, angry that he couldn’t change Mom’s mind. Why did they have to work at the homeless shelter over Christmas?
Christmas was for opening presents, eating delicious food, and playing games. He didn’t want to spend it handing out presents and food to other people. Mom called it community service, but he called it a bummer (令人不开心的事).
“What are you doing?” asked David as he entered Hector’s yard. David was his friend from next door.“Going to build a snow castle?”
“No,” Hector said. “I’m just trying to cool off.”
“Well, it’s definitely cold out here. What’s wrong?” David asked.
“My mom said that we’re going to the homeless shelter on Christmas Day,” Hector said. “We’re going to help provide them with a Christmas lunch and hand out presents to the kids.”
“What’s wrong with that?” David asked.
Hector stared at him, his mouth hanging open. “What’s wrong? We’re going there on Christmas Day, that’s what.”
“It might not be so bad. We did something like that with our local outreach ministry (外联部) on Thanksgiving.” David said. Hector hadn’t known that. Still, he didn’t think it would be much fun.
The next week passed quickly. Soon it was Christmas Day. It was time for Hector to go to the shelter with his parents. As they left, Hector sat in the back seat of the car with his arms crossed and a frown on his face.
At the shelter, a man greeted them with a happy smile. “Thank you for coming to help today,” he said. “I hope you will enjoy your time here.” Hector seriously doubted it.
The man told Dad where he could serve food and he pointed Mom toward several large boxes that were filled with presents.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Will you do me a favor, Achenyo?” Mama called as she looked up from her weaving. Beside her was a pile of wild-grass stalks (秆). Mama took a stalk, laid it along the length of the half-finished bag, and began to weave (编织). In the corner were pots of dyes (染料) she’d use to paint the finished bags. “Will you get me some water for the dyes?” “Of course, Mama!” Achenyo picked up a pot as she ran outside. She didn’t like weaving, although it was a tradition for a mother to pass on the trade to her daughter. Outside, Achenyo called to her neighbor Ajuma. Both girls, with pots balanced on their heads, made their way to the river.
Achenyo and Ajuma soon arrived at the water’s edge, and they found a huge surprise. The river was gone! In its place was a blanket of dark green leaves and lavender-colored (淡紫色的) flowers. “Oh no!” Achenyo cried. “Mama won’t have water to mix the dyes for her bags.” When the adults arrived at the riverbank, they shook their heads, saying “They’ve struck again!”
Last year, the rainy season had brought an invasion (入侵) of water hyacinths. The plants had covered the river and left no room to dip a pot to get water. And now they were back. The adults walked into the water. They began pulling up water hyacinths and throwing them onto the riverbank. When they’d cleared enough plants, the girls filled their pots with water. A pile of water hyacinths lay on the riverbank. What a shame to waste such pretty flowers, Achenyo thought. She picked some for Mama, and then the girls headed home. Each day, they found the river covered by water hyacinths as if no one had cleared the waterfront (水边地) the day before. To fill their pots, they again had to pull up and throw water hyacinths onto the riverbank. The pile on the sand grew taller.
One day, as Achenyo moved an armful of dried water hyacinths out of her way, she had an idea. Carrying the plants under her arm, she ran home.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was around 7 on Monday morning. Paul, a ticket gateline assistant, was working his usual shift at Leagrave Station. “Another wonderful day!” he thought and began to hum (哼) a tune. Suddenly a flash of movement around Platform One caught his attention. After taking a closer look, he realized it was a dog without a collar, silly and excitable, running round after nothing at all.
“Oh!” he hurried down, appeared in a flash and successfully got hold of the dog, but it managed to struggle free out of his grasp, jumped down on the tracks and got stuck.
Panic struck among standers-by as the dog madly raced up and down the tracks, trying to find a way out. There was a lot of noise of people shouting and dog barking. Then the train kicked in.
Obviously, there was no time left to wait for the dog to jump out on his own, but he was not allowed to go down on the track. So he took out his phone and rang the signalman to warn the trains, getting them to slow down, ready to stop if necessary.
Like a cat on hot bricks, he looked around to find something useful. Luckily a guy on the platform there had some bread. So without any hesitation, Paul took the bread and used it to attract the dog as the last hope. Immediately, the dog came over to the platform edge with wagging (摇) tails. But it couldn’t jump back up. That’s not the thing, Paul thought.
Just as it put its paws up to get the bread, Paul managed to grab it. Thank goodness. Paul dragged it up on to the platform. He couldn’t let go of it for fear that it would struggle free a second time. He just held on, stroking its fur and patting on its head to calm it down. Finally he took the dog into the safety of the staffroom.

I remember being happy for my friend Avery when she won the baseball championship we’d both competed in. But I was embarrassed to admit I also envied her! When my friend Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland (《爱丽丝梦游仙境》), though, things went the opposite way.
“I really hope I get picked to be Alice,” said Avery.
“You’d make a great Alice!” I said. “I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.”
“So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse?” she asked.
“Exactly!” I said. ”Or even the Cheshire Cat would be good.”
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theater office, where the director had posted the cast list (演员表).
“Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the March Hare.”
“That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistake!”
But I really and truly was given the part of Alice. I was pretty sure the reason I’d done well is because I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition (试演). And the reason I hadn’t been nervous was because it hadn’t even occurred to me that I could get the major role.
“Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines (台词)?” I asked.
“You mean to practice your lines?” Avery said, not even looking at me. “No thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.”
“OK,” I said. “How about some day next week?”
“Sorry,” she mumbled. “I’m pretty sure I’m busy forever.”

With two teenagers on the verge of college there wasn’t much money left over for holiday shopping. Although I had never conveyed my concern to my daughters, somehow they knew. They had seen me glued to the news reports following the nation’s economic crises. They had watched their dad frowned at the checkbook and credit card bills. They had seen me remove items from the grocery cart that we didn’t absolutely need. They had witnessed me scrimp like never before. They’re smart kids who are also exceptionally thoughtful.
I was on my way to the mall to do a little Christmas shopping. With a short list in one hand and car keys in the other,I asked what they wanted for Christmas.I gather my strength for their reply. They looked up as if praying to God for inspiration on what to say. If I were their age I’d ask for a curling iron, a cell phone, an iPod gift cards, movie tickets, and new clothes. They looked me square in the eye and said”We’re good. We don’t need anything.
I stared back in disbelief. They were teenagers with final exams and SATs only one week away. The college application deadline was dangerously close. They had choir practice, volunteer obligations, and parties. They had concerts to prepare for and school projects to complete. How in the world could they be “good”?
“What are you really thinking?” I waited.nervously for a reply.“There must be something you want.”
They quietly deliberated and Juliana, older and wiser, swallowed hard before answering.“We don’t need anything.” They nodded.“Seriously,” she reaffirmed
I stared at her in disbelief, waiting for her to smile or crack a joke, but she was resolute.
“We’re really good, Mom,” Andrea said.“We have everything a girl could want. You and Dad have given us everything. We’re happy,” she said, signaling to Juliana,“just to have you.”
I felt my heart skip a beat as time stood still. Her words reverberated in my head as my eyes welled with tears of joy. Both girls wrapped their arms around me and hugged me long and hard. The truth was that we didn’t have much money left over for unnecessary gifts. We could barely afford the things we really needed with skyrocketing college costs looming on the horizon.

Working as a tour guide in the scenic White Island of New Zealand sounds like a dream come true for an adventurous man, unless of course, the incredible happens.
At 21, Jack Stevenson was working as a tour guide on White Island when he was caught in the middle of a killer volcanic eruption. Considered an active volcano, many have questioned the decision to allow tourists to visit White Island. But its splendid scenery, warm and skilled natives there and adventurous exploration attract more than 18000 people travel to that spot every year.
Jack along with a group of tourists hiked its winding trails, admired the impressive beauty, dived into its cold lakes, and fished for treats in its streams. Of course, he knew the mountain was an active volcano... Still there is a village at the foot of it.
Suddenly Jack found himself in the middle of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic event in its history. Black smoke rolled down the side of the mountain towards the village as soon as they felt the earthquake, and then ash and rock erupted everywhere. Men, women and children tried their best to go as far away from the volcano as possible as the lava melted its way quickly.

参考答案:
1.During the Christmas break, a large enough package from Granny was delivered to our new house. It was too heavy for us to carry into the living room. To our surprise, it was large enough to hold a small refrigerator. Todd and I were giddy to know what it contained. We couldn’t wait to tear the box, delighted to discover mounds of homemade Christmas treats, presents wrapped in decorative paper, and neatly folded pajamas for each of us. As each gift came out, we shrieked with excitement. The box seemed bottomless and the smell of our Granny’s house was filling the air.
Just then the phone rang. It was Granny. Todd and I chatted happily with her for nearly half an hour, a warm current rising. She asked us about school and assured us we had received the package. She did it in such a way that we both thought we were her favorite. For me, it was the highlight of Christmas. My granny packaged and shipped magic and love. She came to rescue me, softening my anxiety and lightening my life as well.

Hector stood uneasily, not sure what to do. The man noticed his hesitation and guided him to a table where he could help set up plates and utensils for the guests. As Hector started working, he began to notice the people around him. They all seemed grateful and happy to be there, sharing a warm meal and a sense of community. Hector couldn't help but feel a little guilty for his earlier reluctance. He realized that these people might not have had a Christmas meal or presents if it weren't for the shelter and volunteers like his family.
After the meal, Hector helped Mom pass the presents out to the kids. He saw their eyes light up with excitement and joy as they received their gifts. The children's happiness was contagious, and Hector soon found himself smiling and laughing along with them. As he handed out presents, he noticed David and his family also volunteering, and they exchanged a knowing look. By the end of the day, Hector's earlier anger and disappointment had vanished, replaced by a warm feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. He had learned the true spirit of Christmas – giving and sharing with others, especially those less fortunate.

6.Paragraph 1:
“Mama, will you teach me to weave?” asked Achenyo eagerly. Mama laughed. It was her wish to pass on the weaving trade to her daughter. But she was doubtful about the water hyacinth stalks. Achenyo showed Mama how difficult it was to break a stalk. “I’ll teach you. But if it doesn’t turn out right, I’ll say I told you so.” Achenyo was pleased. “Thank you, Mama!” They wove together every day after school. It was a tricky job. The stalks hurt Achenyo’s palms, but she was determined to make something beautiful.
Paragraph 2:
One afternoon, Achenyo held up her finished work made from water hyacinths. “Mama, I’ve made a school bag to carry my books!” Mama looked over Achenyo’s handiwork. It was neatly woven and well decorated. She clapped her hands in pleasure. Achenyo smiled, “I told you so, Mama!” And they also showed it to their neighbors. Inspired by the delicate school bag, they also began to use the stalks to make bags and baskets. She pretty much threw away our friendship.” “Hmm,” said my mom, “sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious and don’t know how to act. She just needs a little time and understanding.”
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then at rehearsal one day, I went up to her, “I know you didn’t exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you’re such a talented actor, and the way you say your lines is so awesome.” I smiled. “Thanks,” said Avery. “Well,” I said, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. I’d love your help if you have any free time.” “I think I might be free on Thursday.” She smiled. Our play ended up going great. That moment was the sweetest and most tender I had ever experienced. Their words were all I needed. I didn’t need a present under the tree and neither did they. Words spoken from the heart of the children lifted me to a much higher place. They couldn’t have given me a better gift. I cherished their warmth and reaffirmed my love for them.
“I insist you let me get you something. We can afford it.” I lied.
Juliana pulled back and her solemn voice took over.“Then get us something we can share.
”We’re really good at sharing,“ Andrea chimed.
I looked at my daughters in awe and silently thanked God for blessing me with two great kids. How could I be so lucky?
I put my car keys away and assembled the Christmas tree in the family room in its usual spot. It was the one job I detested and I usually pawned it off on Patrick, my husband. This year I cherished the time together. Next year they would be on a college campus and the thought of not having them around me all of the time scared me. I appreciated each strand of twinkle lights that we wrapped around the prickly branches. I loved every second of it.
Andrea opened the box of ornaments and hung one on a branch near me. Andrea gave me an endearing smile.”This ornament sums up the way I feel.“
Juliana peered over her shoulder and read the inscription.”Love really is the best gift of all."

I was wild with joy and decided to build a signal fire by collecting leaves and lighting them up for my friends to see the fire.Although it had been rained on,I was finally successful to light it. Everything in silence, only the howling of the winds and the cracking of twigs kept me company. I couldn’t help wondering what would have gone wrong because I had never had such kind of experience.
While sitting down and warming myself around the fire,I heard some distant noise. As the sounds got closer, I realized that those were my friends. I jumped with a lot of joy as tears filled my eyes because I knew I was safe. They shouted my name, and I replied very loudly knowing in my mind that I was saved. It showed me the importance of the use of the markings and of course the quality-calmness while adventuring in the forest. I also thought to myself that my being lost added a special taste to my adventurous vacation which I would remember all my life.

I looked at my daughters in awe and silently thanked God for blessing me with two great kids. How could I be so lucky?

This year I cherished the time together. Next year they would be on a college campus and the thought of not having them around me all of the time scared me. I appreciated each strand of twinkle lights that we wrapped around the prickly branches. I loved every second of it.

Juliana peered over her shoulder and read the inscription.”Love really is the best gift of all."
