“Have you checked the oil in the car?” my father used to say to me, his version of “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with an inquiry about the oil and end with one about the 76
Fathers have a lot of love to give, 77 it’s often supplied through the medium of 78 advice. In my experience: It’s mostly about your motor vehicle.
My student car — an old green Toyota bought for $500 — was the vehicle 79 his paternal affections. I bet it’s 80 been so. Back in ancient Rome, the father would test the son on the state of his carriage.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: You just have to 81 from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase “I love you” can be 82 in the slightly lengthier “I could come around Saturday and 83 the seal (密封圈) around the basic of your toilet because I assume that thing is getting really smelly.
The affectionate phrase “You made my life 84 from the moment you were born” may be rarely heard but there is the more 85 “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip in that Toyota. My father stood on the corner. “Highways are 86 ” he said “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and carriage. And take a break every two 87 . And every time you stop for gas, you really should 88 the oil.” At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would repeat “ horse and carriage” every time I sped up to overtake some other speeding vehicle.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I 89 that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish to English dictionary. I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so 90 was simply dad’s attempt at affection.

Italian shepherds are taking the lead in forest fire prevention, by leading their animals to eat the bush. Laws once 91 such practices are being changed, as rural communities begin taking a 92 in forest management.
In thinner forested areas, larger animals feeding on plants were found to be 93 in reducing forest fire risk. Smaller animals like goats and sheep are 94 for areas that lack natural predators (天敌). In Italy, the eating habits of smaller animals make them perfect for 95 woody bushes.
Although a forest seems fascinating, 96 it’s no longer a natural ecosystem. When climate change regulations limited the shepherd’s 97 to work in woodlands, it was part of a continent-wide 98 to fight against deforestation. The effort worked well, with total forest 99 in Italy increasing by 75% since the 1960s. Red deer and other native animals have disappeared. Therefore, the 100 of sheep and goats meant that nothing prevented woody bushes from dominating the land, turning small fires into 101 ones.
Meanwhile, shepherds decided to write letters asking the permission to graze in the woods again. They hoped to carry out a 102 project of rural areas, where Italy’s worst wildfire within 40 years 103 its way from the mountain tops to the sea. They hoped to bring in more shepherds to control the fires and 104 eco-tourism in the area. It makes sense that those most invested in the forests’ 105 would be worthwhile to save them, which goes for both the shepherds and the animals.

One day, many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist at a children’s institution in England, an adolescent boy showed up in the waiting room. I went out there where he was 106 up and down restlessly.
Tim wore a black raincoat that was 107 all the way up to his neck. His face was pale, and he stared at his feet while wringing his hands nervously. He had 108 his father as a baby, and had lived with his mother and grandfather ever since. But the year before he turned13, his grandfather and mother were killed in a car accident. Now he was fourteen and in family care.
I looked at Tim. He was very 109 and depressed. He refused to talk to me. The first two times we met, Tim only sat hunched up in the chair without saying a word. As he was about to leave after the second visit. I put my hand on his shoulder. He didn’t 110 back, but he didn’t look at me either.
“Come back next week, if you like,” I said. I 111 a bit. Then I said, “I know it hurts.” He came, and I suggested we play chess. He nodded. After that we played chess every Wednesday afternoon, in 112 and without making any eye contact. It’s not easy for me to cheat in chess, but I admit that I made sure Tim won once or twice.
Usually, he arrived earlier, took the chessboard and pieces and set them up before I even got a (n) 113 to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my 114 . But why did he never look at me?
“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his 115 with,” I thought.
One afternoon. Tim took off his raincoat and put it on the back of the chair. While he was setting up the chess pieces, his face seemed more 116 and his motions more lively.
Some months later, I sat staring at Tim’s head, while he was bent over the chessboard. I was thinking about how little we knew about the healing process. 117 he looked up at me. “It’s your 118 ,” he said.
After that day, Tim started talking.
Maybe I gave Tim something, but I learned a lot from him. He showed me how one-without any words-can 119 out to another person. All it 120 is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, a sympathetic nature, and an ear that listens.

The sun was shining brightly over our heads and sweat (汗水) was pouring off our backs and faces. We stood still without 121 any noise, all hot and tired. But everyone kept standing as straight as trees.
It was 122 most high schools give to new Senior One students — military training (军训). We spent four days in a closed environment. 123 we couldn’t go home at night and the training was 124 and difficult, our humorous young drillmaster (教官) with a funny accent (口音) was a real 125 of our days. We laughed 126 his jokes, sat in rows singing different songs and listened to him telling true stories about his life. He gave us the feeling that 127 and sweat were not the only things that we received from military training.
After this journey, we were more 128 than we had imagined and we were much braver than we had expected. Girls who looked sick rested for a little while, then 129 came back to the team. Boys who were being punished 130 to the playground at once and began to run. Sweat flowed down our faces 131 we thought about how to shout 132 than other classes.
Military training taught us perseverance (坚持不懈) and determination (决心). On the last day of our training, the confidence could be 133 in our faces. We shouted so loud that our 134 could be heard across the heavens. With eyes like burning torches (火炬), we walked into the future. Now the sun is 135 at all of us.

The first day at school has left a deep 136 on me. I’ll never forget it.

A young beautiful woman came in, but she was 137 , no smile on her face. “You are not permitted to interrupt me in the course of class unless...” She was speaking when I heard a 138 “Lily, Lily” from outside the door. My grandmother was standing there with a pair of socks in her hand. I didn’t realize I was bare feet until then. I wanted to 139 them, but I dared not do that. I shook my hand, 140 “Don’t wait here any longer. Leave quickly.” As I did so, I still 141 my eyes on my teacher. I really didn’t want her to take 142 of me, but she did. She went out to get the socks. When she gave them to me, she looked at me for a while. My face suddenly turned 143 and my heart beat faster. I began to put the socks on. Unfortunately I was so nervous that my 144 hands couldn’t get them onto my feet easily. Just then I heard my name called.
