Good evening, everyone. This is Barbara Klein from Science in the News. On this program this week, I’ll talk about sharks. They are among the oldest animals on earth. Sharks make people feel very frightened and are famous for hurting or killing other living things in the sea and even people. Yet they have been in danger because of human activities. The main danger to sharks is over-fishing. Scientists say sharks have lived in the sea for millions of years. Today, there are more than 350 different kinds of sharks. Most sharks are about two meters long. And the biggest whale shark can grow to a length of twenty meters. Sharks have a very good sense of smell. They eat fish, other sharks, and plants. Some sharks can be found in very cold areas, some sharks leave sea waters to enter freshwater rivers, but most sharks live in the sea. Well, thank you for listening and that’s all for today. We’ll continue to talk about sharks in tomorrow’s program.

College rankings (排名) are very popular among parents and students in the United States. 71 Some educators have questioned the rankings and how useful they are.
The best-known ranking is probably by the magazine U.S. News & World Report. It put out its first “America’s Best Colleges” report in 1983. Since then, educators have doubted the rankings. A number of magazines put out lists of college rankings once every year. Several months ago, Forbes put out its college rankings for 2023. Like other lists, Forbes considers things like student satisfaction, how successful college graduates are and how much money they make. 72 It considers how much debt (债) students will have after they graduate.
73 All of the experts said they should look at more than just rankings because they do not tell the whole story about a school.
Ray Anderson of Virginia is a high school headmaster. He now works with a service called AGM-College Advisors. 74 Anderson says what is most important to him is knowing what the student wants, likes and is able to do.
Jeffrey Stahl agrees that rankings have limited value. In his job as a counselor (顾问) at Yorktown High School in Virginia, he talks with students and their parents about colleges. 75 . Then, they should widen their search and go to see the colleges.
A.Choosing a college is of great importance.
B.But Forbes adds another important piece of information.
C.Many parents and students asked for the education experts.
D.The service provides guidance on higher education for students.
E.He suggests that families use the ranking information as a starting point.
F.But are these rankings the best way to help students choose the right school?
十、阅读填表
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,补全表格中所缺的信息。按编号把答案依次填入题后横线上。
It is reported that a group of people in North America have been arguing about the advantages and dangers of wolves. Some believe wolves should be killed. Others believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wild.
In Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago because hunters(猎人) were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were set up to protect the wolves. And they began to give birth to wolf-babies. Now there are too many wolves and the food for them is not enough. So, their own food supply may be destroyed.
A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in the wild also hunt deer. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wild plant life. When the deer can’t find enough food, they die. If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(猎物) will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the cycle of life in the wild to balance the ecology(生态). If we killed more wolves, it’s good for both wolves and their prey. We’d also save some farm animals.
In another northern state, wolves eat cows and chickens when they are hungry. Farmers think that the population of wolves is too large in some areas.
If you had lived long ago, you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf. According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people. Even today, the stories of the “big bad wolf” will not disappear. As a result, many people are afraid of wolves. In fact it is not true. Wolves seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell, let alone kill people.
When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and injured. No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived. And it has always been a law of nature. Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in nature.
76 on killing wolves or not | |
Reasons for killing wolves | ➢Killing wolves can not only protect some deer and farm animals but also help the wolves avoid dying from 77 . ➢Too large population of wolves now! Farmers hope to kill some wolves and only leave 78 . |
Reasons against killing wolves | ➢In stories, wolves are dangerous, but in real life, they 79 people and seldom kill people. ➢Wolves can help 80 by eating some animals. |
