I was driving to town on a beautiful summer day. The sky was full of clouds. The sun was dancing through the green trees with its golden light and I was smiling at the wonder of it.
Suddenly, a truck rounded in front of me, two feet over the center line. I pulled my wheel to the right as I just missed the truck on one side and a ditch on the other side. I noticed the other driver looking at his cell phone totally unaware of the near miss. I closed my mouth in order to avoid saying the words that I promised myself I would no longer use.
Later in town, I was coming out of a store when a yellow butterfly started to circle around my head. I smiled peacefully and held out my open hand. To my joy, the butterfly landed on it briefly and swung its wings before flying away. I looked around to see if anyone else noticed this small wonder, but the only two people near me had their heads down, looking at their cell phone screens.
I began to think that life is what happens while people are busy looking at their smart phones. Now I know that social media, computers and smart phones are all necessaries in our lives, but it doesn’t mean that they have to control our days or take over our lives. Amazingly, they all come with a power button. We can turn them off anytime we wish to.
Don’t let your smart phone take away your smart mind. Don’t let technology take over your soul. Use it when you need it, and turn it off when you don’t. Turn your heart on more and our phone on less. Share your kindness, your joy, your hugs, your laughter and your life that make others smile.
24. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. The writer’s car got destroyed in the accident.
B. Someone died in the accident.
C. The writer feels very angry.
D. The truck was driving on the right side of the writer.
25. The underlined phrase "unaware of" in the second paragraph probably means “__________”.
A. not catching B. not noticing C. not understanding D. not avoiding
26. The example in Paragraph 3 shows that __________.
A. being buried in a cell phone may make one miss something good
B. a cell phone may lead to bad luck
C. the butterfly doesn’t like people with cell phones
D. the writer is a lucky dog
27. What’s the writer’s attitude towards people’s spending much time on cell phones?
A. Unconcerned B. Doubtful C. Supportive D. Negative
C
It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
28. What did the new research find?
A. Running fast benefits all of us. B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial. D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
29. How did the researchers get the result?
A. By using different drugs on participants. B. By interviewing some sportsmen.
C. By collecting information on the Internet. D. By doing experiments and comparisons.
30. Which is related to our happiness?
A. Cycling. B. Medicine. C. Blood flow. D. Colors.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. We should go for a run in winter.
B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise.
D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.
D
Therapy (治疗) dogs have long visited nursing homes and schools and even disaster sites, offering comfort to humans. A new study shows that a 10-minute visit from a therapy dog can help relieve patients’ pain in the emergency room.
The research from the University of Saskatchewan, published in the journal PLOS on Wednesday, found that emergency room patients who were visited by a therapy dog reported less pain than those who weren’t.
“Therapy dogs themselves are really friendly and are so excited to visit with people in places where they don’t typically have a pet.” Dr. Colleen Dell, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and one of the study authors, told NPR.
In a trial (试验), researchers asked more than 200 patients to report their pain levels. One group of patients received a 10-minute visit from a therapy dog and the other group did not. After the visit, researchers asked patients in both groups to report their pain levels again. Those who spent 10 minutes with the dog reported less pain, the study found.
“Many patients have experienced positive outcome from therapy dogs, but this study clinically proves them”, said Dell, herself a therapy dog handler.
Stempien, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Saskatchewan has seen the dogs in action at the hospital where he works. Before the pandemic (大流行病), a therapy dog would visit multiple times a week. During visits, the dog would often make a stop in the nursing lounge (休息室) before visiting with patients.
“I think it brought smiles on faces of almost all the staff they interacted with,” Stempien told NPR.
But the people aren’t the only ones getting something out of this. “Therapy dogs love their job. They love to interact with people.” Dell said, “Though we need more research on this, we believe they also gain something out of it as well as giving while visiting with people.”
32. How did researchers carry out their study?
A. collecting numbers B. Organizing tests.
C. studying previous study projects D. conducting questionnaires
33. Which of the following is true about the trial?
A. Different patients received different treatments from the therapy dogs.
B. Those visited by the therapy dogs reported more positive results.
C. Those visited by the therapy dogs lessen their pain totally.
D. 200 doctors and nurses took part in the trial.
34. What can you know from the last paragraph?
A. Therapy dogs are only interested in helping people.
B. Therapy dogs fell less pain when staying with people.
C. Therapy dogs can also get something when helping people.
D. The present research is enough to prove that therapy dogs love their job.
35. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A health magazine B. An animal encyclopedia
C. A biology textbook D. A science fiction
