My family lives in Texas. I was born and brought up in Texas and I am a graduate of the University of Texas. However, around my second year in law school, I wanted to make a great change, which was almost unheard of for Texans: I wanted to leave!
I realized this after completing my first-year internship (实习期). I knew I wanted something different and my chance came during the 2011 Super Bowl (橄榄球超级大赛) in Dallas. A snowstorm blanketed the entire city in snow and thousands of people were gathered. I overheard (偶然听到) that StubHub, a big company from a great city, San Francisco, was throwing a party next door to my hotel. I thought if I could get an internship, I could leave for the summer and at least see what it was like. Yes, it was a huge leap. I told myself I was ready.
There was just one problem: I wasn’t invited to the StubHub party. But you know I’m the type of person who goes for something she wants. Needless to say, I crashed the party and found my way to the president. I kindly introduced myself and then asked if they had a legal internship program. Guess what? They accepted my request to be a legal intern, even though there was no such program.
The legal department didn’t have a long-lasting position for me. However, I got many other chances to be a legal intern in other companies. That experience has shaped my life. Working for a great company in San Francisco, I’m extremely happy for making my decision to leave Texas.
By leaving Texas, I learned that it is so much more rewarding to try the unfamiliar than to stay in the comfort zone. Exploring the unfamiliar is how you’ll understand what fits your life. I say, dive in head- first.
24. How did the writer know about StubHub’s party in Dallas?
A. The company invited her. B. Her friends told her about it.
C. She heard it by chance. D. She read it in the local newspaper.
25. The author was able to leave Texas because ________.
A. she dropped out of the University of Texas.
B. she watched the 2011 Super Bowl in Dallas.
C. a snowstorm blanketed the entire city in snow.
D. she introduced herself to the president of StubHub.
26. Which of the following words best describe the author?
A. Patient and honest. B. Smart and humorous.
C. Determined and positive. D. helpful and energetic.
27. What does the author want to tell us through her experience?
A. You must choose a career that you like.
B. Jumping out of your comfort zone is rewarding.
C. Accepting who you are makes you realize your strengths.
D. You should listen to your family to learn about your strengths.
C
All the efforts you put into studying at university may not have been enough—because robots could be coming for your job. A new study finds that as many as 800 million workers could be replaced by robots by 2030.
The study from the McKinsey Global Institute estimates(估计)that between 400 million and 800 million individuals could be replaced by automation(自动化)or robots and need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world. It estimates that 30 percent of the hours people spend on working globally could have been automated by that time.
Those most affected will be people who work in predictable environments doing tasks such as operating machines and preparing fast food. Those who make a living by collecting and processing data also face a high risk of being replaced by robots. But people who work in less predictable environments such as gardeners, plumbers, and childcare staff face a smaller risk, because their roles are technically difficult to be automated and often command relatively lower wages, which makes automation a less attractive business proposition(商业提议).
However, it’s not all doom(厄运)for the future of employment. The Study notes that automation sometimes allows workers to remain employed in a different position. “ Even when some tasks are automated, the employment rate in those occupations(职业)may not decline because workers may perform new tasks,” McKinsey &Company wrote in a release on its website.
It noted that China has the largest number of employees who would need to switch occupations, up to 100 million if automation was adopted rapidly, or 12 percent of the 2030 workforce. The numbers are higher in more advanced economies, with up to one-third of the 2030 workforce in America and Germany needing to switch occupations, along with nearly half of the 2030 workforce in Japan. Countries which fail to prepare workers for transition to new jobs will feel the impact of a rise in unemployment and depressed wages, according to the study.
- Why will lots of people need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world?
A. They don’t put efforts into their study at university.
B. The world’s working population is on the steady rise.
C. They will be paid less with the development of technology.
D. Robots or automation will take the place of their positions.
29. Which will be the least likely to be replaced by robots?
A. Childcare in kindergarten. B. Fast food cooking.
C. Machine operation. D. Data collection.
30. What is the study’s statement about jobs’ being replaced by robots mainly based on?
A. Financial(金融的)reports. B. Public opinions.
C. Estimated figures. D. Website contents.
31.Which part does the article belong to?
A. Education. B. Economy C. Lifestyle. D. Technology.
D
A snow leopard(雪豹)research team said one of its infrared(红外的)cameras caught some snow leopards playing in a national park in the east end of the Qilian Mountains, which the team leader said is “of great significance”.
There have been suspected sightings of snow leopards in east Qinghai before, but none has ever been confirmed.
The snow leopard, often found near the alpine snowline in the Asian heartland, has been called “the king of snow mountains”. It is a Class-A protected animal in China and is classified as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
“Based on these images, we can conclude that the area has a certain number of snow leopards, but the exact population is yet to be calculated,” said Ulgi, an official at the reserve.
In fact, in the snow leopard project, a number of high-tech equipment have been increasingly used in monitoring and protecting the species, such as infrared cameras, drones(无人机)and DNA research based on the animal’s excrement(排泄物). “Still, more should be done to protect the snow leopard, which is vulnerable to challenges such as climate change, habitat(栖息地)loss and human activities,” he said.
A total of 60 infrared cameras have been scattered across the largest State-owned forest in the central and eastern Tianshan Mountains, covering an area of around 550 square kilometers, according to sources in charge of the project on February 18.
“We will keep monitoring to learn more about snow leopard activities in the Tianshan Mountains and assist(帮助)the local administration to come up with more targeted protection measures,” said He Bing, snow leopard project manager.
He said that the discoveries of snow leopards and other animals in China were evidence of China’s increased efforts in environmental control, such as the protection of natural forests.
32. How were the snow leopards exactly discovered?
A. Followed by the team. B. Seen by local people.
C. Caught on camera. D. Watched from the drone.
33. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Easily hurt. B. Valuable.
C. Changeable. D. Hardly available.
34. What can we expect of the snow leopard protection in the future?
A. The infrared cameras will be replaced by handy cameras.
B. More high-tech equipment will be made use of.
C. The project will soon be successfully finished.
D. Monitoring places will be transferred to other areas.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Countries Unite to Protect Snow Leopards
B. The King of Snow Mountains Is Worthy of the Name
C. The Infrared Cameras Play an Important Role in Animal Protection
D. Snow Leopards Are Found in China’s Qilian Mountains

Five ways to up your study game
Do you ever find yourself studying really hard for a test but finally not doing so well? 36 . When I was younger, I did the old-fashioned method of staring at my notes for two hours and hoping the content would magically stick with me. If you’ re anything like younger me, please stop staring at your notes. Start studying in a more engaging way. 37 .
Try explaining the concepts or theories that you’re studying to family members or friends. If you can explain it to them to a point where they can understand it, then that means you understand it.
38 . If you’re able to stay focused, studying with a group might be more fun and motivating than studying alone. It’s also great to hear other people’s thoughts on the course material in case there’s anything you missed or misinterpreted.
The last option is to use a study website. 39 . A lot of these sites offer premium versions, so be aware of which features are free and any “free trial” due dates.
Try using some of these methods when you study for your next test. Studying can be boring, but finding ways to make it more fun can really help you do well on your tests. 40 .
