Ibrahim Hamadtou of Egypt was just 10 years old when a tragic train accident resulted in the amputation (截肢) of both of his arms. Children are resilient, and Ibrahim didn’t let his life-changing circumstances keep him from playing, working, and eventually growing up to marry and have three kids. Oh, did we mention he’s also a world-famous table tennis player?
“In our village, we could only play, at that time, table tennis and soccer—that’s why I played both, “Ibrahim said. “It was logic to play soccer first due to my case; then I played table tennis as a challenge.”
All it took was one friend’s words to inspire Ibrahim to succeed at table tennis. “I was in the club where I was officiating (担任裁判) a match between two of my friends,” he recalled. “They disagreed on a point, when I counted the point in favor of one of them. The other player told me, do not interfere as you will never be able to play. It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis.”
And play he did! Ibrahim has earned several honors throughout his career so far, including silver medals in the African Para Table Tennis Championships in 2011 and 2013.
To play, Ibrahim holds the paddle in his mouth and uses his foot to serve the ball. “It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the racket with my mouth and making the serve; with practice and playing regularly this skill was improved,” he said.
This legend now competes against some of the greatest players in the world and has attended the last two Paralympic (残奥会) games. While he didn’t win against China’s Chen Chao at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, he has gained international recognition for his perseverance and incredible talent. That is the face of true determination! Ibrahim is showing other people with limb differences that there’s a spot for them at his table.

VR technology was used by doctors in Brazil and Britain who were involved in the operation involving the joined twins. The twin boys are named Arthur and Bernardo. The two were joined at the head and shared some brain tissue. Doctors in Brazil had attempted to separate the boys in the past, but they were unsuccessful. Then the hospital that cared for the twins for the past two-and-a-half years decided to contact a British charity that has financed and provided medical teams to support similar separations.
The charity is called Gemini Untwined. Its creator is Noor ul Owase Jeelani. He is a surgeon at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Jeelani specializes in separating joined twins, especially those linked at the head. Gemini Untwined has helped carry out several successful surgeries of child twins since it was established in 2018. But Jeelani said the separation of Arthur and Bemardo was the most difficult operation yet. He explained in a statement that this is because the boys shared important veins in the brain. At four years old, the twins were also the oldest with connected brain tissue to try separation surgery, Jeelani added.
The process to separate the twins was long and intense. Jeelani said a total of seven surgeries, involving more than 100 medical workers, were required. The surgeries were completely successful. Jeelani added a major reason for the successful separation was the VR training the medical teams from Britain and Brazil received in the months leading up to the real-life operations.
The teams used brain scans of the boys to create a digital map of their shared heads and brain tissue. Using this data, doctors performed several trial operations with the use of VR equipment. The simulated surgeries permitted the teams to try out different methods that were used in the actual operations.
VR technology is currently used in a number of ways in the medical field, including past separation surgeries involving twins. But Jeelani said it was the first time the technology has been used for this purpose in Brazil. “In some ways these operations are considered the hardest of our time,” Jeelani added. “And to do them in virtual reality was just really man-on-Mars stuff.”
8、What can we know about Gemini Untwined?
A. It is a Brazilian charity and contacts the hospital first.
B. It hasn’t provided medical teams to any hospitals.
C. Its creator is good at separating joined twins.
D. It was established six years ago.
9、What did the medical teams do before the surgeries?
A. Contacting charities around the world B. Receiving the VR training
C. Paying a visit to the twins’ mother D. Encouraging one another
10、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. VR was used for the first time in the field of medicine
B. People use electronic equipment to experience VR technology
C. The technology was something really unusual and complex
D. VR operations will be carried out on Mars some day
11、Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The separation surgery with VR technology
B. The joined twins involved in operation
C. VR technology used in medical field
D. Successful surgeries carried by charities
Pope Francis warned gossip(闲话;八卦)“fills the heart with bitterness and also poisons us”. But a new study suggests that gossiping may in fact be good for our self-esteem(自尊) because it allows us to compare ourselves to others. Dutch researchers have found hearing positive and negative gossip about another individual boosts self-reflection and self-evaluation. But they added that stories about others need to be treated with a “critical attitude” about the impact it may have.
Elena Martinescu at the University of Groningen said: “Women who receive negative gossip experience higher self-protection concerns possibly because they believe they might experience a similar fate as the person being the target of the gossip. Men who receive positive gossip experience higher fear, perhaps because upward social comparisons with competitors are threatening.” Professor Martinescu added gossip provided individuals with indirect social comparison information and provides an essential resource to reflect on their behavior. She suggested rather than trying to block out gossip, we should “accept gossip as a natural part of our lives and receive it with a critical attitude regarding the consequences it may have on ourselves and on others.”
The study explored the effect both positive and negative gossip had on how the recipient evaluates him or herself. The study asked participants to recall an incident where they received either positive or negative gossip about another individual and then were asked questions to measure the self-improvement, self-promotion, and self-protection value of the received gossip information. Individuals that received positive gossip had increased self-improvement value, whereas negative gossip had increased self-promotion value and self-protection concerns.
“For example, hearing positive stories about others maybe informative, because they suggest ways to improve oneself, "Professor Martinescu said. “Hearing negative gossip may be flattering, because it suggests that others may function less well than we do. However, negative gossip may also be threatening to the self, because it suggests a harmful social environment in which one may easily fall victim to negative treatments.”
12、How does gossiping benefit us according to the study?
A. It teaches us the critical attitude. B. It helps us to rediscover ourselves.
C. It allows us to get rid of bitterness. D. It lets us know other people’s stories.
13、What’s males’ possible reaction to positive gossip?
A. They strengthen self-protection awareness.
B. They feel sorry for the target of the gossip.
C. They panic because of strong competitors.
D. They try to block out the positive gossip.
14、What would the recipients of positive gossip do?
A. They would recall an incident. B. They would improve themselves.
C. They would seem more offensive. D. They would try to protect themselves.
15、How can negative gossip lead to our increased self-protection concerns?
A. We realize the harmful social environment.
B. We know others don’t function as well as we do.
C. We are suggested new ways to improve ourselves.
D. We become aware of the likeliness to fall victim to it.

Installing a little door in your main door can be a great way to allow your pets to come and go as they please. ①______. Petvation is looking to change that with the help of AI facial recognition and a mobile app.
You may already have a little entry in your door that only gives access to your cats or dogs, but that likely means your pets will have to wear some sort of “key” on a collar to identify them and unlock the pet door. ②______ To save the trouble, considerate Petvation developers have developed a smart pet door without a “key”. They make use of the face recognition technology that has already been applied to our smartphones and computers to ensure that access to the home is only given to authorized family members.
However, the developers recognize that identifying and authorizing animal faces is more challenging than with humans. ③______. The AI model is expected to be continuously improved over time for better accuracy. And in addition to identifying cats and dogs, the system can also recognize all kinds of animals, so the entry point will remain firmly closed to unwanted guests.
The company says that three independent safety mechanisms are employed to “keep your pet safe from head to tail”. ④______. There’s also a light anti-pinch (防夹) mechanism in place. And finally the system checks all sensors during operation and will enter a safe mode if issues are detected.

A. First, sensors detect and monitor the cats or dogs as they approach and pass through
B. But sometimes that may lead to unwanted visitors too

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. It was a dry season that would bankrupt several farmers before it was through. Every day, my husband and his brothers would go about the tiring process of trying to get water to the farm. If we didn't see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He wasn’t walking with the usual carefree abandon of a youth but with a serious purpose. I could only see his back. He was obviously walking with a great effort trying to be as still as possible.
Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever task he had been doing was completed.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful stride toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking carefully to the woods, and then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, very careful not to spill the water he held. Maybe two or three tablespoons were held in his tiny hands. I sneaked closer as he went into the wood. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw an amazing sight. A mother deer with a huge pair of deer horns appeared in front of him, with a baby fawn(幼鹿)lying on the dry ground. I almost screamed to get him away.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, Billy walked right up to them.

Good morning, everyone!
While there are benefits to living a life of comfort, your most passionate life begins at the end of your comfort zone. That’s what the sentence “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone” means. It can help us to understand the importance of growth in our lives.
However, many people are unwilling to leave their comfort zone because of fear of failure. In fact, every moment in life is full of challenges and potential. Believe you can handle whatever life throws at you. Failure just proves that you’re trying new things, growing and getting better.
Thank you for your listening!
34、答案:
However, Billy walked right up to them. The baby deer obviously suffered from heavy loss of water and heat exhausiton, lifting its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hand. With wet eyes, the baby deer looked at Billy, and Billy looked back, and there seemed to be a magic magnetic field between them. From time to time the baby deer nudged Billy’s hand with its nose as if saying thank you.
I witnessed the most beautiful heart working hard to save a life. At the moment he stood up and turned, I was there in front of him. His eyes were filled with tears. “I’m not wasting,” he said. “It’s OK,” I comforted him. Then I joined him with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him walk to the baby deer alone while I stood at the edge of the woods. As tears rolled down my face, they were suddenly joined by other drops...and more drops... as if the sky itself was crying.
