Back in 1958, I was crazy about the Norfolk and Western 746. The smooth bullet-nose engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed to have cast a spell on me.
Together the engine and tender measured a little shy of 2 feet—enormous by the toy train standards of the day. Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high.
Unfortunately, the amazing 746 also had an amazing price—$50, equal to about $450 today. That was far more than my grandfather could afford. Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound! But that was the best that my grandfather could give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Complicated sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, nor did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind. On an ordinary day, however, I happened to see the 746 outside the window of a train show. Just one look, I could not look away. Childhood memories that I tried to hide in the depths of my heart raced through my mind, happy or sad.
That day I took the 746 home and placed it in the centre of the room, and let my childhood dream sing its way around me. Smoke rose out from the engine and the soft song sounded from its tender. It seemed as if I could see the soft light in grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.
24. Which best describes the 746 in the author’s eyes?
A. It was taller than the author. B. Its price rose from $50 to $450.
C. It was the largest train in 1958. D. Its beauty was beyond compare.
25. How did the author feel when receiving his little Lionel plastic?
A. Visibly relieved. B. Really excited.
C. Terribly shameful. D. Slightly unsatisfied.
26. What happened to the author in his 30s?
A. He left his grandfather alone. B. He didn’t favor the 746 at all.
C. He attempted not to recall the past. D. He admired advanced toy trains.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Toy Trains: Childhood in History B. The 746: Childhood Memories of Love
C. Toy Trains: Memories of A Generation D. The 746: A Perfect Gift from My Grandfather
C
Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. Thus, the idea of “digital detox” is becoming increasingly inviting.
The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period of time. Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen time for 30 years. Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites. A third option is logging out in evenings or on weekends. Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled times. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they can unplug from their digital routine.
Why might you want to take a digital detox? Perhaps you find that you are spending longer than you intend on certain apps or that they distract you from more important things. Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying. Constant negative news can also give rise to a lot of stress.
Technology can also have physical effects. Many people experience back or neck pain as a result of bending over screens. The blue light coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep by preventing production of melatonin (褪黑素) .
Giving up all screens may not be realistic, but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.
28.Why does the author say “technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing” in paragraph 1?
A. To confirm a concept. B. To present a problem.
C. To explain a rule. D. To make a prediction.
29.What does the underlined word “unplug” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Recover. B. Benefit. C. Escape. D. Suffer.
30.Which could be the reason for one to start “digital detox”?
A. Apps selection difficulty. B. Fear of missing important things.
C. Exposure to false news. D. Pressure from social comparison.
31.What is the purpose of the text?
A. To recommend healthy lifestyles.
B. To call for reducing the use of digital devices.
C. To give instructions on starting digital detox.
D. To present different attitudes to digital products.
D
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have turned spider webs into music — creating a strange soundtrack that could help them better understand how the spiders output their complex creations and even how they communicate.
The MIT team worked with Berlin-based artist Tomas Saraceno to take 2D laser scans of a spider web, which were linked together and made into a mathematical model that could recreate the web in 3D in VR. They also worked with MIT's music department to create the virtual instrument.
"Even though the web looks really random, there actually are a lot of inside structures and you can visualize them and you can look at them, but it's really hard for the human imagination or human brain to understand all these structural details," said MIT engineering professor Markus Buehler, who presented the work on Monday at a virtual meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Listening to the music while moving through the VR spider web lets you see and hear these structural changes and gives a better idea of how spiders see the world, Buehler told CNN. "Spiders use vibrations(振动) as a way to locate themselves, to communicate with other spiders and so the idea of thinking really like a spider which would experience the world was something that was very important to us as spider material scientists," he said.
Spiders are able to build their webs without shelves or supports, so having a better idea of how they work could lead to the development of advanced new 3D printing techniques. "The reason why I did that is that I wanted to be able to get information really from the spider world, which is very weird and mysterious," Buehler explained. In addition to the scientific value, Buehler said the webs are musically interesting and that you can hear the sounds the spider creates during construction. "It's unusual and eerie and scary, but finally beautiful," he described.
32. What have MIT scientists done according to the passage?
A. They have known how spiders communicate.
B. They have translated spider webs into sounds.
C. They have created a soundtrack to catch spiders.
D. They have made a mathematical model to produce webs.
33. What can we know about spider webs from paragraph 3?
A. Their structures are beautiful and clear.
B. They are complex for people to figure out.
C. Professor Markus Buehler knows them well.
D. The American Chemical Society presents the result.
34. In which field will the study be helpful?
A. Printing. B. Virtual reality. C. Painting. D. Film-making.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. It explains why scientists did the experiment.
B. It tells us that the music created by spiders is scary.
C. It presents a new and creative way to study spiders.
D. It shows how the researchers carry out the experiment.

I love leaning foreign languages so much that I learn a new language every two years. When people find I’m a polyglot(通晓多种语言的人),they always ask me,"How do you do that?"
Honestly, my answer will be, "I don't know. I simply love learning languages." 36 36
They want to know why they spend years learning even one language, never achieving fluency, and what's the secret of being polyglots.
37 And what do we have in common? I decided to find that out. I went to several events where language lovers gather to practice their languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use,and heard dozens of approaches. 38 38
One time as I was listening to an Irish polyglot, it suddenly dawned on me: the thing they have in common is that they found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. All these polyglots talked about language leaning as if it was great fun. You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. 39 The methods are various, but they make sure it's something enjoyable.
I realized it's actually how I learn. 40 Then interesting programs became my choice. So all is clear. If you don't like writing words down on paper, type them in an app. If you're a shy person, apply self-talk at home. This is how polyglots learn languages, and the best news is that it's available to anyone willing to take the learning into their own hands.
A. But people are never happy with the reply.
B. There's no shortcut to learning languages for anyone.
C. One of them even made recipes in a foreign language.
D. That made me wonder, too, how polyglots actually do it.
E. When learning Spanish last year, I was bored with textbooks.
F. What is it that enables polyglots to learn languages faster than others?
G. Everybody seems to have a unique way to speak several languages fluently.

From the moment my husband brought home a box of six chicks from Tractor Supply Company, our nine-year-old, Sophie, didn’t let them out of her sight. She named them Trixie, Beauty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain Flint, and Adrian (we were reading Treasure Island and watching Rocky at the time).
Sophie made a promise that she would take good care of them and took at least one chicken everywhere we let her. We were content with this; after all, it was a good way to make her dutiful and responsible. So when we wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed, she was very upset. She, actually, argued about this issue again and again, claiming that it is Duty NO.1 to company her baby chickens to sleep. Later, we made a compromise that we’ve allowed one inside at a time if Sophie immediately cleans up after the visit.
On a special festival, she dressed as a chicken and convinced us it was the turn of Trixie and Sweet to come with her to get candies from the neighbors --- that’s Duty NO.2 to company her baby to have fun. The reactions from neighbors were quite amusing. “Wait, are these real chickens you’re holding?” “Of course! They’re my babies, and I am the mother.” Sophie answered excitedly. Trixie and Sweet cooed (咕咕叫) the whole time, seeming to make response.
One hot day, I buried myself in piles of work when Sophie rushed into the room, asking “Mommy, can I take Captain Flint to the pond?” To be frank, I didn’t quite catch what she said but still nodded, even without taking my eyes off the screen. She jumped to cheer. “Captain Flint, let’s head for the pond now!” “Coo, coo.” Then they rushed out of the room.
Several minutes later, I suddenly realized that Sophie just went to the pond with a chicken! Could Sophie swim? No!!! Could chickens swim? No!!! Could anything unexpected happen?
