How to see London like a pro
We’ve explored London thoroughly and come away with quite a few lessons. Here are our tips.
Visiting Buckingham Palace
Being London’s most iconic landmark, this grand 775-room building is where Queen Elizabeth hosts feasts and meets heads of state. But if you’re dreaming of taking a visit to it, you’ll need to plan your trip carefully. The palace is typically only open during the summer months from July 23rd to October 3rd. Visiting hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. If you’re visiting when the palace isn’t available to tour, you can still see the Changing of the Guard.
Hitting the London Eye
The London Eye is a playful addition to the city skyline. Standing near centuries-old architecture, this enormous Ferris wheel goes round slowly over the left bank of the Thames, serving up views over the London Bridge and the Shard to the west, plus a wide perspective of the Palace of Westminster. Buy your tickets in advance online, choose a clear day and go first thing in the morning to avoid crowds peak.
Drinking afternoon tea
Afternoon tea—a sacred, buttery ritual (仪式)—is reason enough to come to London. The British have taken a simple tea break and turned it into a luxurious ceremony, complete with patterned china, layered plates of finger sandwiches and scones in cream and jam. And we haven’t mentioned the cakes, which are often brought around on a wheeled cart. When making a reservation, remember that afternoon tea isn’t a snack but a full meal with sweet and salty elements, and you’ll be stuffed. The smart move is to skip lunch and maybe even dinner.
21.Which is a proper time to visit Buckingham Palace?
A.July 18, 10:00 a.m. B.Aug. 23, 8:30 a.m.
C.Sep. 27, 3:00 p.m. D.Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m.
22.The attraction of the London Eye lies in the fact that ______.
A.it provides a good view of some places of interest
B.it makes London’s skyline seem more harmonious
C.it spins quickly over the left bank of the Thames
D.it is more historic compared to the nearby buildings
23.What do we know about British afternoon tea?
A.It is a short break with light snacks.
B.It is a full meal with various tasty foods.
C.It combines sour and sweet flavours well.
D.It is complete with delicate silver dishware.

She can’t vole, but she has the volte of confidence of young climate activists across the globe. Meet Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old architect of “School Strike for the Climate” .
At age 12, the Swede gave up meat and flying to reduce her carbon footprint. But the real trigger came when Sweden was hit by heat waves in 2018. Thunberg started skipping classes on Fridays to strike outside the Swedish parliament. Thanks to social media, her actions have spread and influenced millions of young people all over the world to organize and protest.
And look! Thunberg became the poster child of climate action. She addressed the 2018 UN climate conference and this year’s World Economic Forum. Encouraged by Thunberg, 1. 4 million students across 125 countries took to the streets in the first Global Climate Strike for Future on March 15. Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in March 2019, and a few months later she became the youngest individual ever to be honored as Time’s Person of the Year.
Then she entered the spotlight again. Invited to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City, which took place in September 2019, Thunberg traveled across the Atlantic on a zero-carbon sailing boat, accompanied by her father and a supporting crew.
She said at the UN Climate Action Summit:“For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight …You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you. ”
Nevertheless, Thunberg has her share of critics too. The objectors attack her for what she has done, calling her a “weirdo” and regard the Greta Thunberg effect as a useless fantasy.

A.Breakthrough. B.Cause. C.Intention. D.Solution.
25.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Thunberg?
A.Her popularity. B.Her future plan.
C.Her speeches. D.Her achievements.
26.What can you infer from Thunberg’s words in Paragraph 5?
A.The science is still not clear about climate.
B.Great progress has been made in politics and solutions.
C.She is not satisfied with the measures that the government took.
D.Future generations haven’t achieved much and failed the government.
27.Which of the following can best describe Thunberg?
A.Responsible and ambitious. B.Selfless and generous.
C.Easy-going and creative. D.Considerate and cautious.
C
Since the age of 5, Laura Lee has had what most would consider an odd habit-she collects toilet rolls. At that time, she didn’t know this habit would eventually become a nationwide recycling campaign.
In December 2018, as a 16-year-old student of Nanyang Girls’ High School in Singapore, Lee founded ToiletRollSG, a national project that aims to collect 1,000 kilograms of cardboard cylinders — or about 150,000 pieces. As of February of 2021, Lee, who was studying at Hwa Chong Institution, had collected 860 kg of toilet rolls, reported Singapore Today. Slightly later, she was awarded Singapore’s National Environment Agency’s Ecofriend Awards, which recognizes individuals for their contributions to the environment, under the Youth and Students category.
But why did she choose toilet rolls? “They are convenient to collect and also one of the purest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material,” Lee told Singapore Today. “Project must be economically practical too. For example, it’s more difficult to recycle pens because they are made up of too many different materials like rubber casings, metals and plastics which require more resources to separate.”
Lee went into a partnership with the waste management firm Veolia, which gives her five cents for every 1 kg of toilet rolls collected.
She organized “toilet roll challenges” within Nanyang Girls’ High School and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls from school toilets. She also conducted talks about ToiletRollSG. But due to COVID-19, she has been unable to conduct physical talks, so she raises awareness about different social causes through her Instagram Live series called On A Roll.
One of the biggest challenges Lee has faced has been others doubting her due to her young age. “I always have to use my actions as well as the different things I’ve done to prove that I’m passionate and know about this,” she told The Straits Times.
Lee will donate the money collected to a social cause that is focused on community health.
28.Why did Lee found ToiletRollSG?
A.To develop some good habits. B.To be honored by Ecofriend Awards.
C.To recycle toilet cardboard cylinders. D.To make contributions to her high school.
29.Lee’s mention of pens in Paragraph 3 is to ________.
A.show toilet rolls are more important B.prove it difficult to recycle pens
C.illustrate the process of recycling pens D.explain Lee’s opinion on recycling
30.What is the biggest challenge Laura is faced with?
A.The failure to conduct talks. B.The ineffective cooperation.
C.The small amount of money. D.The mistrust of others.
31.Which of the following words can best describe Lee?
A.Humorous. B.Responsible. C.Emotional. D.Curious.
D
A patient of mine, a bright young man, had dropped out of college. Living with his parents, he was considering suicide (自杀) besides playing videogames from day to night. Twenty years ago, I would have prescribed an antidepressant (抗抑郁药), while today, I recommended something different to him: a dopamine fast (多巴胺戒断). I suggested he give up all screens, including videogames, for one month.
When people do something they enjoy, the brain releases a little bit of dopamine and they feel good. But one of the most important discoveries in the field of neuroscience in the past 75 years is that pleasure and pain are processed in the same parts of the brain and that the brain tries hard to keep them in balance. Whenever it tips in one direction it will try hard to restore the balance, according to neuroscientists, by tipping in the other.
Instantly dopamine is released, the brain adapts to it by reducing the number of dopamine receptors (受体), causing the brain to level out by tipping to the side of pain, which is why pleasure is usually followed by feeling down. Our brains evolved this balance over millions of years when pleasures were scarce and dangers ever-present. The problem today is that we no longer live in that world but a world of overwhelming abundance. Yet increased access to addictive substances or activities has made us more miserable than ever before. Rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide are increasing all over the world, especially in rich nations.
It’s only after we’ve taken a break from the addiction that we’re able to see the true impact of our consumption on our lives. That’s why I asked my patient to give up videogames for a month, enough time to allow his brain to reset its dopamine balance. If we can keep reducing phone use long enough, the benefits of a healthier dopamine balance are worth it.
32.What is the discovery in paragraph 2 about?
A.The function of dopamine. B.The brain’s ability to balance pleasure and pain.
C.The disadvantages of playing videogames. D.The psychological problems in rich countries.
33.What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A.Dopamine is released when people are down.
B.More depression occurs in the modern world.
C.Rich nations have more suicide cases than poor ones.
D.People have less access to pleasures today than in the past.
34.Why did the writer advise the young man to give up his videogames?
A.To help him regain the dopamine balance. B.To rid him of the bad habit of consumption.
C.To prevent killing himself again. D.To guide him to the true meaning of life.
35.What can we say about the writer?
A.He thinks medicine is useless. B.He acts as a social worker.
C.He specializes in treating mental illnesses. D.He suffers from phone addiction.

Dear Liu Fang,
Today the weather was wonderful, so I went out to the local park with some friends to fly kites. It seemed that half the city joined in us, so we had trouble find a good place to stand. But I felt so relaxing when we were done.
Over lunch, I was told that kites were invented by a man naming Mozi, who was something of a philosopher and worked hardly to bring peace between warring countries. He also created many clever inventions from wood. I think it is so wonderful that Mozi could invent something would bring relaxation and happiness to such many people. I never thought to yourself that something like kites needed a inventor.
Anyway, I have to do my homeworks. Talk to you later!
Love,
Peter
