Course description
In this course we explore modern literature from early pioneers such as Emily Dickinson, Hemingway, Philip Roth and Toni Morrison. We focus mainly on shorter fiction and poetry, but may also look at excerpts(摘录)from some longer works.
We consider not only the meanings of the works but also how they are written and constructed to give them their power. While we focus largely on close reading and formal analysis, we also look at the historical con-texts of the works. Additionally, we pay attention to how literature sounds and how it makes us feel.
Students are expected to write a number of informal reaction pieces, contribute actively to class diseussion, take part in a few short creative projects. and prepare short papers and oral presentations on works of their own choice.
Students learn how to read actively, think analytically, present their ideas clearly, and work with others—all skills that will be invaluable to them in college and in their professional and personal lives. No previous knowledge or course work is required.
Instructor: Mark Blacher
Mark Blacher holds a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While at UCLA he taught classics of world literature, and taught students close reading and writing. Mark’s undergraduate degree is from Columbia University. After failing to secure a spot in vault(跳马)final of the Tokyo Olympics, Oksana Chusovitina left the sport’s biggest stage forever. The 46-year-old called time on her legendary career after competing at a record eighth Olympic Games.
In a sport known for its youthful champions, Chusovitina has become a global fan favorite. She has collected 11 medals at major global championships and 5 gymnastics skills are named after her.
Chusovitina was born on June 19,1975, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, and she participated in the Olympic Games for the first time in Barcelona in 1992.
Chusovitina then represented Uzbekistan from 1993 to 2006, and in 1997 she married Uzbek Olympic wrestler Bakhodir Kurbanov. In 1999 they had a son, Alisher. Chusovitina obtained German citizenship and competed in various club competitions. She earned prize money to help pay for her son’s care. She also represented her new country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where her silver medal on vault was the only medal for the German women’s team. Chusovitina represented Germany for the final time at the 2012 Olympics and she has been competing for Uzbekistan ever since. Every year, Arctic terns(燕鸥)migrate from the Arctic to the Antarctic, a round-trip of about 80,000 kilometers. New research finds that these far-flying birds use just a few select routes for their travels.
“The Arctic tern is well-known to people as a record holder. It holds the world record for the longest migration of any animal, and therefore interacts with a variety of ecosystems along the way,” lead author Joanna Wong says.
“They are an indicator species that can tell us so much about the different ecosystems that they travel through,” Wong continues. “If they don’t make it to their destination in one year, then you know there might be an environmental problem some-where along their routes.”
Globally, Arctic terns are redueing. Their crossing such a long distance has made it hard for researchers to see where the problem is. “These birds are difficult to study because they are either living in polar environments, or on the go,” Wong says.
So in order to track them, Wong and her colleagues attached light-level geographical positioning devices to the legs of 53 Arctie terns. These devices are actually small computers that record surrounding light in-tensities(强度). “The length of daylight can tell us the latitude(纬度), while the time of solar noon can tell us the longitude. So we are able to judge positions of the birds,” Wong says.
Researchers compared the routes taken by the birds they followed and the mgration timing to other Arctic terns that had previously been tracked. They determined terns in different areas all end up taking similar routes.
Some other seabirds also use the same paths, which suggests that the routes aren’t specific just to the Arctic terns and that protecting them may be beneficial to other species.
28. What are Arctic terns famous for according to the text?
A. Their title of long-distance travelers.
B. Their contribution to local ecosystems.
C. Their ability to survive in polar cli-mates.
D. Their preference for certain migratory routes.
29. Which of the following statements about Arctie terns may Wong agree with?
A. Their final destination changes each year.
B. They choose different migratory routes each year.
C. They help us be aware of related environmental problems.
D. Their migratory journey usually takes more than one year.
30. What challenge does the researchers meet when studying Arctic terns?
A. They can hardly get access to Arctic terns.
B. They know very little about polar environments.
C. They have difficulty protecting Arctic terns habitats.
D. They fail to figure out Arctic terns migratory routes.
31. What can we learn from the study?
A. Terns around the world live at the same place.
B. The protection of Arctic terns is easy to achieve.
C. Terns’ migratory routes are affected by other seabirds.
D. It’s significant to protect Arctic terns’ migratory routes.

When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I transitioned from running for sport to running for amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that comes with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and experts say that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged(不插电的)running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and got enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior leeturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And ultimately we know that makes them feel bad.”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workout if the batteries on their tracking device are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Olympie marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time: Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while he runs, has helped him get more “in tune” with his body.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”
32. What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?
A. He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B. He experienced running as a really fun activity.
C. He was at a loss how to replace the watch battery.
D. He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
33. What does Eoin Whelan think of running watches?
A. They can lead to hurtful comparisons. B. The way people use them is different.
C. The data provided by them is not correct. D. They can help enrich the wearers’ social life.
34. Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5?
A. To show the popularity of running watch-free.
B. To encourage people to become professional runners.
C. To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.
D. To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. It is time to take off your running watch
B. The running watch is gaining more popularity
C. We should enjoy a break without a running watch
D. A running watch can slow down your running speed

How can we get along with classmates
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we would load our little trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied.
Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to meet the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places.
Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feed sack(麻布袋)dress. I explained to the old lady that wécould not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement. I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent us the same postcard every six weeks. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would never miss a $10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them—what else could I do?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But then, one day when I was in that area, I made a big decision.
Twenty years later, while sitting at a bar, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me.

W: That didn’t seem to worry the authorities even if there is quite a bit of strong language. The critics couldn’t tolerate the music—making your hair stand on end.
M: Anyway, I don’t think the storyline is really surtable for young children.
W: Yes, I agree with you. And have you read the book?
M: Oh yeah. A great book. I couldn’t guess what the final ending would be.
W: I couldn’t agree more! I love the way the author uses humorous words.
M: Yeah. Maybe that’s the reason why it is so popular in the film market. In addition, the price of the film ticket is a real bargain. Personally, it’s good value for money, isn’t it?
W: Yes. It is worth every penny. So what about seeing the film together next Friday?
M: I’d like to, but I’m not sure if I’ll be free next Friday. I will check my schedule and then call you, OK?
W: Sure. I’ll be expecting your good news.

M: Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Information Round-up on your local radio station! This is Larry Knowles talking to you this morning. And the first thing coming up is a reminder to you all out there about Canadian Clean Air Day. which is on June 6th. It is a chance for Canadians everywhere to focus on the problems of air pollution and try to do something to help reduce the problem. How many Canadians do you think die each year because of air pollution? 2,000? 3,000? Well, the rate is shocking 5,000, and it’s likely to grow—unless we do something. And, it’s concerned with your health that is the driving force behind the government campaign to support Clean Air Day. So what causes air pollution? Well, the burning coals to produce heat are one of the factors. A lot of black smoke coming out of the chimneys of factories also adds to the air pollution, But here in Canada more than half of the air pollution is caused by gas-powered cars. Fortunately, researchers have already come up with a few suggestions on how to improve the situation. And now I’ll explain some of them to you...

How can we get along with classmates?
It is important for us students to get along well with each other. To find the best way, students in our class had a hot discussion.
Most students consider it essential to help each other in our study and life so that we will feel the warmth from our classmates. While, in some students’ opinion, what is equally important is trusting each other. Last but not least, we all hold the belief that it is respecting that ensures a good relationship.
The discussion offered useful advice. I am convinced that we can benefit a lot from it.
第二节:
参考范文:
But then, one day when I was in that area, I made a big decision. Despite knowing that it was a terrible business decision, I loaded a red mahogany piano onto my little truck. I delivered the piano to the old lady. I placed the new plant in the house advised her and the little girl to keep the chickens off it and left. I was sure that I had just thrown away a new piano. To my surprise, the payments came in on time with a thank-you note every month.
Twenty years later, while sitting at a bar, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Shocked by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain, And I suddenly remembered it was her, the little barefoot girl in the feed sack dress! I was so glad that my kindness did make a real difference.
