People become vegetarian (只吃素食的) for different reasons. Some people believe killing animals is wrong. Some people see it as a good way to keep healthy. Lately, more people are eating vegetables instead of meat, because this plays an important role in protecting the environment.
According to a study done by American scientists, eating meat is one of the main ways that humans do harm to the environment, second only to the use of cars.
But how will modifying our eating habits make a difference? We can have a look at some facts. We need almost 20, 000 liters of water to produce a kilogram of beef, but only 150 liters of water is needed to produce a kilogram of crops (庄稼). Similarly, 10,000 square meters of farmland that is used for raising livestock (牲畜) produces about 227 kilograms of beef, but the same amount of farmland can produce 13,600 kilograms of carrots, 18,000 kilograms of potatoes, or 22,700 kilograms of tomatoes. It’s clear that we can make better use of land and water if we produce crops instead of meat.
Raising livestock also leads to rising global temperatures. Animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep release (释放) methane — a greenhouse gas that causes global warming — when they pass wind (放屁). One cow produces about 500 liters of methane each day. A 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns that methane may have a more harmful effect on the environment than carbon dioxide (CO2).
There is growing support for vegetarianism. For example, many schools across the UK and the USA hold “Meat Free Mondays” to show students how easy it is to eat less meat. One doesn’t have to become fully vegetarian to help save the environment. Try to be vegetarian for one day a week or just eat less meat. A small effort on our part can go a long way.
