“Anyone knows single parents who can’t afford to get their child’s hair done for school? I will braid (编辫子) it for free!”Brittany Starks wrote on a Facebook post.
She decided to offer her hair braiding services after a family friend delivered backpacks full of school supplies, clothing and shoes for Cayden and Ceniyah in early August. “At the time, I didn’t have anything for my kids to start school,” said Starks, who is in between homes and staying with her mother. “It meant so much to me.”
The unexpected gift made a big difference to Starks and her children, and it motivated her to pay it forward. Starks, who works two receptionist jobs, also braids hair part-time. “The hair-braiding process involves washing, blow-drying, and finally dividing the hair into small sections and braiding it. It also requires multiple supplies — including combs, brushes, hair jam and additional pieces of hair to weave in. It costs anywhere from $150 to $400 at a salon (美发厅), depending on the style,” Stacks explained. “But it can last for months and is a huge timesaver in the mornings.”
When she wrote the Facebook post, she assumed only a handful of people would reach out,but before she knew it, she had 35 appointments booked. Her Facebook inbox was suddenly full of messages from single parents, whose stories of hardship and financial challenges mirrored her own.
“There’s a huge need for this. I could really relate to a lot of the women who reached out, and it made me realize that what I was doing was really important,” said Stacks. “What got me the most was seeing the kids smile.” Given that there was less than two weeks before the start of school, Starks knew she needed to enlist help.
4、What got Brittany Starks to offer her hair braiding service?
A.A post on Facebook. B.Her friend’s timely help.
C.Her mother’s advice. D.A trip to her kids’ school.

6、How does Starks feel about the response to her Facebook post?
A.Rather disturbing. B.Beyond expectation.
C.Far from satisfactory. D.Very disappointing.
7、What can we infer about Brittany Starks from the text?
A.She is single with one child. B.She is ambitious and arbitrary.
C.She is in need of helping hands. D.She is free from financial worries.
Night light from street lamps and phones change the body clock, therefore weakening the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels and raising the risk of diabetes (糖尿病) by more than a quarter, new research has found.
The research was based on almost 100,000 men and women in China who were exposed to artificial light while it was dark outside. Those exposed the most were 28 per cent more likely to develop this condition because of the interference (干预) the light had on the body’s production of melatonin (褪黑激素) which affects our sleep patterns.
Evidence is growing that 24/7 lifestyles are seriously damaging our health by interfering with the production of melatonin. Long-time exposure to residential outdoor artificial light was linked to a rise in blood sugar levels. It was also associated with poorer function of the cells which control blood sugar.
Lead author Dr. Yu Xu, of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai, said, “Despite over 80 per cent of the world’s population being exposed to light pollution at night, this problem has gained limited attention from scientists until recent years.”
The study estimated more than nine million cases of diabetes in Chinese adults can be attributed to it. A total of 98,658 participants underwent interviews to provide medical, household income, education, way of life, and family history information. Body weight and height were measured to calculate BMI, and blood samples were taken to obtain levels of both fasting and after-meal glucose (葡萄糖).
Participants were assigned an average artificial outdoor light exposure level for the location using satellite images. They were divided into five groups based on highest to lowest exposure. On average, for every 42 people living in regions with the most light pollution, there was one more case of diabetes.
Dr. Xu said, “Exposure to artificial light at night is a common environmental risk factor in modern societies.” More than 99 per cent of people in the US and Europe live under light-polluted skies. Earth’s 24-hour day-night cycle has resulted in most organisms, including humans, having an inbuilt circadian (昼夜的) timing system, but light pollution has been found to change the circadian rhythm of insects, birds and other animals, resulting in early death and loss of biodiversity.
8、How can artificial light affect people’s health?
A. It can harm people’s eyesight.
B. It can affect people’s sleep patterns.
C. It can weaken the function of brain cells.
D. It can increase the production of melatonin.
9、What information about the participants was collected?
A. Work. B. Sleep. C. Lifestyle. D. Marriage.
10、What helped with the study?
A. Previous findings. B. High technology.
C. International assistance. D. Artificial chemicals.
11、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Artificial light is harming the world.
B. People are fighting against pollution.
C. The waste of electricity is the primary issue.
D. Most light pollution is from the US and Europe.
At a museum in Vietnam, Lena Bui’s film Where Birds Dance Their Last reflected on the beauty and vulnerability of Vietnamese feather farms after Bird Flu. During a festival in Rwanda, Ellen Reid’s audio experience Soundwalk was shared in a hopeful discussion about music, parks and mental health. These are a few of the things I have helped bring to life over the years, working at the intersection of scientific research, the arts and advocacy to support science in solving global health challenges.
Science is key to addressing these issues. But it isn’t the only key. To achieve its potential and for its advances to be implemented and reach all who could benefit, science depends on trust and good relationships. People might not always see science as relevant, trustworthy or meaningful to their lives. There are reasons why some see science as having a chequered past, from nuclear weapons to eugenics, and are therefore uninterested in, or suspicious of, what it proposes. Others feel excluded by the incomprehensibility of hyper specialist knowledge.
In its capacity to build upon and test an evidence base, science is powerful, but researchers and funders haven’t been as good at ensuring this evidence base responds to the needs and interests of diverse communities, or informs policy makers to take action. Science might be perceived as distancing itself from the personal, the poetic and the political, yet it is precisely these qualities that can be most influential when it comes to public interest in atopic or how a government prioritizes a decision.
A moving story well told can be more memorable than a list of facts. This is where the arts come in. Artists can give us different perspectives with which to consider and reimagine the world together. They can redress the proclaimed objectivity in science by bringing stories —subjectivities —into the picture, and these can help foster a sense of connection and hope.
In 2012, I set up artist residencies in medical research centres around the world. Bui was attached to the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam. The head of the research team was delighted, finding that Bui, as a Vietnamese artist, had license to be in, and to share useful insights from, villages where infectious disease researchers weren’t welcome. Six years later, I led Wellcome’s Contagious Cities program, which established artist residencies worldwide to support locally led explorations of epidemic preparedness. The recent pandemic made this work more noticeable, and has informed our Mindscapes program which is currently sharing experiences of mental health through the work of artists.
With pandemic, climate and mental health crises upon us, rising inequality and what feels like an increasingly broken world, never has there been more need to build and nurture hopeful and imaginative spaces to grow human connection and shared purpose for the common good. Science and the arts can work hand in glove to achieve this.
12、The author lists two works in Paragraph 1 mainly to ______.
A. reveal the gap between science and art
B. prove his competence in both science and art
C. introduce successful science-related artworks
D. show that science can be promoted in art forms
13、What does the underlined word “chequered” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Recent and remote. B. Good and bad.
C. Usual and unusual. D. Peaceful and scary.
14、Which of the following would the author agree?
A. Policy-makers base their decisions on science.
B. Researchers popularize science effectively.
C. Science is well received among the public.
D. The arts help people build connections.
15、Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Value of the Arts to Science
B. Where Do Science and the Arts Meet?
C. A New Way to Fight Pandemic—the Arts
D. Which Matters More, Science or the Arts?
二、七选五
16、 Much of the work in today's world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. ①_________ Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?
②_________ They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team's performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn't evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team's performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ③_________ In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team's performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, "There is no I in TEAM." ④_________
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
⑤_________ An A-team may require a balance—not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.
A. It's not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.
B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.
C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers' attention.
D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.

The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.

34、答案:
I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My flashlight was broken, as were my eyeglasses and my phone. I turned on the phone and it lit up! Sadly, however, no signal. If only I could get the still-functioning phone up through the door, it might connect to the Internet, so I could shout at Siri from down below for help. In the daylight, I could make out Angel was mewing at me from above.
It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope. She kept her eye on me. Waving the phone, I instructed “Angel! catch it!” With a deep breath and a silent prayer, I cast the phone upward. Miraculously, Angel managed to catch it with her paws as it shot through the door and lay it right by the entrance. Once it connected to the Internet, I yelled at Siri to call emergency services. With them on the line, I screamed out my situation. When heavy footsteps came near, I knew I was saved. I no longer wonder if it was Angel who rang the doorbell that day.
