Elizabeth Freeman was born about 1742 to African American parents who were slaves. At the
age of six months she was acquired, along with her sister, by John Ashley, a wealthy Massachusetts slaveholders. She became known as “Mumbet” or “Mum Bett.”
For nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashley’s wife tried to strike
Mumbet’s sister with a spade. Mumbet protected her sister and took the blow instead.Furious, she left the house and refused to come back. When the Ashleys tried to make her return, Mumbet consulted(咨询) a lawyer, Theodore Sedgewick. With his help, Mumbet sued(起诉)for her freedom.

Is there someone that has always been there for you and supports you in times of need? For many people, their parents are the first ones that come to mind. Our parents are often the first and biggest sources of love and support.
You may not have thought about it much, but parents often sacrifice a lot to be able to
provide so much for their children. For example, many parents have given up their dreams to make sure they could provide for their children. Whether it is their time, money or energy, parents often do whatever it takes to make sure they give their children the best they can offer.
Just take a look at Canadian-American actor Jim Carrey. Although he is a famous comedian
and has been in dozens of movies, he still takes the time to appreciate the sacrifices his parents made to make sure he could make his dreams a reality. “My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible for him, so instead he got a job as a salesman,” Carrey said in a video posted by Daily Mail. “When I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. Our family had to do whatever we could to survive.” At the time, Carrey understood his father's sacrifice.
What are some things that you’ve noticed that your parents or loved ones have done to
support you and your dreams? What are some things that you’ve done to help someone else in return?
It’s important to take some time to reflect upon the positive impact people have had on your
life. So, if you realize that someone has helped you in a big—or even a little—way, be sure to let them know. I’m sure they will be happy to know that they have made the world a brighter place. 28.What does the author say about parents?
A. They hardly enjoy their lives. B. They try their best to earn money.
C. They work hard for their own dreams. D. They usually give their kids the biggest support.
29. What can we learn about Jim Carrey?
A. He’s grateful for his parents’ sacrifices. B. He spent a lot of time with his parents.
C. He persuaded his father to be a comedian. D. He was ashamed of his father’s unemployment. 30. What does the author intend to do in the fourth paragraph?
A. Show his judgment. B. Introduce a new topic.
第 4 页 共 8 页学科网(北京)股份有限公司第1
C. Make the readers reflect. D. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
31.What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.To take a positive attitude towards our life.
B.To realize the importance of sharing our thoughts.
C. To work together to make the world a brighter place.
D. To express our appreciation to those who have helped us.

第二节 读后续写(满分15分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.
Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local
village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.
On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.
As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their
teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.
However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so
they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher
was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.
